I have been on t-mobile for about five years and I have always had an unlimited plan. The last 3 years I have used an always on VPN (OpenVpn) to access my data connection. I do think that recently t-mobile MAY (purely speculative) be double counting my data usage as I just got throttled down to 2G until the end of my cycle. This device has very few roms (mainly what I download, historically) and I listen to about 10 podcasts (never streamed, each episode downloaded to my sd card). I don't use spotify or Tidal or netflix, and I transfer all my music files from PC to sd card when at home.
Allegedly I used 39.99GB (exactly the number the rep reported oddly enough) last month (no throttle). I have never gone above 18GB prior to last month. This month (with 6 days left on my billing cycle), I was assessed a total of 34.99GB of data (exact number again). Now I am in "prioritization mode" as its now being called. Basically my account has been throttled down to 2G speeds on my unlimited account.
I called into customer service to learn all of this...and the first question they asked it what do I use my device for, what apps do I have on my phone, do you stream music?
Just a heads up for VPN users, your VPN app may cause you to lose your data for a few days.
I did some research and I guess they typically throttle at 21GB, and other user experiences?

I was told by a service tech that I was being deprioritized at peek hours because I was using a lot of data. That was right around 22gb or so.
Same thing happened to me. The deprioritization is worse that being throttled to 2g for me, the packet latency becomes so bad that using data on that specific tower is basically impossible. The good thing is it only happens on that one tower and if you move to a different tower your speed comes back.
Oh, but this only happens with lte, if you disable lte and use wcdma on that same tower your speed and latency is back to being fast. This doesn't get around you being throttled if you hit your data quota on a metered plan, only if you get deprioritized.
I noticed a lot of extra data being used when I would run"always on" VPN. Keep-alive pings I'm guessing. When I had unlimited data, I was tethering to my fire stick for Netflix, used about 300GB a couple months in a row with no throttling. This was before they announced cracking down on abusers of unlimited, however. Also, this was on my Nexus 5, with the tethering flag removed... I was showing 0 tethering data used.

+1 on wcdma. Try switching to wcdma/gsm only mode and see if that helps. I use a vpn service and haven't noticed double counts.
Thanks the switch to WCDMA for some data (better than nothing), so I do appreciate it.
I wonder why my data usage is be calculated so high, these last two months.
I had some issues with TMO on my G4. They do and don't throttle you at 21gb. They "say" that your speeds decrease if you are on a tower that is at 90% capacity. Earlier in the year it happened to me several times. Recently it has not happened in months.
I average 100gb/month. I realize I'm in the 1% but that's why I came to TMO about 4 years ago, because of the unlimited 4G LTE. .

The Captivate will be my first true smartphone, and as such there's no way I can be grandfathered into the unlimited data plan. So I have to have either the 200 MB or 2 GB plan (ridiculous btw). I know that the 200 MB just flat out isn't going to be enough for me, but how much usage would it take to max out on the 2 GB plan?
it'd have to be a LOT. I have work emails and do constant FB/Twitter photo uploads and the like and the max I've used is like 350 meg. Even with the occasional *cough*tethering*cough* on my current WinMo phone, I've never gotten anywhere near 2 gig.
How do you check your data usage with this phone?
There is an app in the market called "my wireless " by AT&T, it shows you everything about your account and it is free, otherwise there is the website...

Thanks, I plan to stick with the minimum plan since I have university wifi everywhere.
Most I have ever used in a month is 1GB but that is also pretty much the amount I use per month, even with wifi in most places I go.
That's because you know you have 2GB. I'm not going to stream HQ videos off of youtube off-campus and I'm not going to go to photography sites and download HQ images. I'm going to web browse (with opera mini), use google maps, and various social apps on 3G. 90% of the time I will be at university.
Take you charger with you for the wifi though, like you I am usually at home or school with wifi, but it drains the battery a lot quicker than normal over the air data...
I typically get about 3-5 hours with only wifi but nearly constant use on my N1, it just depends on how close you are to the router and if you have the screen on constantly...
I know there has been a lot posted on this, but every phone/device I have had and/or used wifi has been a battery drain.

You use less battery when you use wifi..just be sure to turn the 3g off when you do. Also, the most I used was 800meg per month.

You can also *DATA# like any other AT&T phone and you'll get a text right back with your usage.
Also there is a program on the market called 3g watchdog that I used to track my usage, I liked it, but after I realized I only use 200mb in about a month I uninstalled it lol but I'm also still on the unlimted 5gig

The unlimited plans are unlimited. There is no 5 GB cap as is commonly rumored, unless you're on someone other than AT&T, Sprint or Verizon.

I am in the same boat. First smartphone and I will be doing the minimum (200mb) plan because I plan on using my home/uni wifi most of the time. I dont plan on streaming a bunch of videos or doing pointless browsing, however I am still a little nervous that I might go over.

I wanted to call BS on this but I did my *DATA# and it says I've used 6MB out of Unlimited.
I could have sworn there's a 5GB cap though.
That said I've used 2.3GB of data since February (last time I reset my usage). So the 2GB plan *should* work. If you use more than that then you're probably using it as a modem.

Also, is there a way to block data in/out from the phone if I'm near my limit?

when i was working at att they gave us some papers detailing data plan that talked about going over the 5gb mark and being hit with a pretty hefty charges. there is a case that is on engadget that i think is what caused them to give us the paper work. i couldnt post the link cause im new but if ya want to read it pm me. i had a customer pull this off and his bill was over 700, ive came close to doing the same as well.

I agree; even normal heavy usage for me did not typically exceed 2gb unless I was watching lots of video or downloading movies. So I can't complain too much about the new 2gb plan restriction, as most months I save $5, which costs less even if I occasionally go over and am charged an additional $10 for another 1gb.
how do you save 5$

BS. My average is over 6 GB and I've never received any additional charge or a single phone call. Only tethering and data cards are limited which is because they aren't limited plans. I'm pretty confused as to where this confusion came from because there isn't a single shred of proof of what you're saying anywhere on an AT&T document.

From the DataConnect plan terms... not smartphone
We may, at our discretion, suspend your account if we believe your data usage is excessive, unusual or is better suited to another rate plan. If you are on a data plan that does not include a monthly MB/GB allowance and additional data usage rates, you agree that AT&T has the right to impose additional charges if you use more than 5 GB in a month; provided that, prior to the imposition of any additional charges, AT&T shall provide you with notice and you shall have the right to terminate your Service.
There is nothing is the Wireless Data Use Service Agreement of the general plan terms about a 5GB limitation. The only places that line appears is under the DataPlus, DataPro and DataConnect plan terms.
Are you streaming videos like blockbuster or slingbox or something? 6 GB... wow...
I downloaded the "my account" applications this morning to check my usage. And something came up pretty odd.

When I bought a couple of MT4Gs in December, I moved to a 3000 minute Family plan, with "unlimited" data. So my info looks similar.

Yea but t-mo "should" be throttling after 5Gb of data usages. And i haven't got any text, email, call or anything about being over that by 2Gb.
I'm just wondering if they heard the masses scream and listened.
i have unlimited data and such, and my data usage doesn't show up under my usage if I use the "my account" app... weird
*edit*
I'm using the one that was pre-loaded on the phone, not the one from the market... doesn't look like the screen shot though
The my account app is very inaccurate. Not sure about data, but it ALWAYS gets the minutes wrong.
Let me shed some light on this for you guys. Yes TMo has changed the dataplan which now include $10 for 200MB or $30 for unlimited. Now keep in mind Unlimited does not truly mean its unlimited as the soft cap is around 5GB but its not always enforced but only to those top 1% heavy user who are throttled to EDGE 128kbps until next cycle restarts.
BTW option94 the update is not real time as its periodic which consists of few sessions and thats how they post the data. As TMo sometime share towers with 3rd party for those can take up to 30days yes 30days to reflect on your bill. It even shows up on your next bill if you even used it on this bill.

Considering on official TMobile forum I saw 19gb/month screenshot and another 17gb/month without any TOS with standard $19.99 unlimited data plan. So IDK they make treat it case by case who knows or they don't care, did policy change? This was just 4-5months ago.
First of all thats Carriers way of making money extra from same bandwidth. Hence the whole bandwidth crunch BS? They sold the service claiming its unlimited then they couldn't define unlimited and stated is subjected to TOS for excessive use without clearly defining it. It wasn't until ComCRAP's fiasco they had to legally come out or face same fines by FCC. Now from what I read in that thread and man that was long thread like 7-8pages or something. The user used torrents, downloaded XXXX lol, did light tether but mostly bandwidth quota was hit by P2P.
P2P FTW always the reason you should have seen my FServ spec and stats my ISP wasn't very happy me hosting my own server and pulling 3.5TB TX bandwidth.
TMoUS has 5GB soft limit far as I know but what I am saying is as I had asked those folks if they were contacted by the Abuse team they told me no as they were never notified or given warning. Normally when you get passed there quota which I myself believe 19GB is high on mobile device. I don't think TMo simply enforced it, now if everyone keep doing this they will. I myself have never personally went over 2.5GB/month usually is at 250-500mb/month.

I can attest to that-got a text from them the other day saying I was over the 5gb cap and my 4g is now throttled until the day after my billing cycle ends...lame....wish they could offer true unlimited without it affecting their network....

Ya don't worry about it. This is done to target the heavy users in to switching them to plan which they will implement for the tethering, basically they are milking the cow for whats it worth lol with same service before but for higher price. Always trust the Bandwidth Guy
Anything over 5gb you are throttled, if you have a plan after 11/3/10...... prior to that it was 10gb. All carriers are coming up with phones (Iphone 4) to get you to renegotiate the contracts so they can phuc you.
You may go over 5gb and still have unthrottled speed but as I was told by a t-mobile field technician you will only be slowed when the tower is seeing high usage, ie. you will be the first to get slowed to EDGE speeds. So in my case, I love my new Mytouch 4g half the month and the rest of the time its my Mytouch 2g....... great selling point huh??
It pisses me off too because it goes back to the American way....If you had enough money to get your new phone at $500 dollars you could have kept your TRUELY unlimted data plan like the congressmen, movie stars, professional athletes, yes and even the trust fund babies...LMFAO

Lmfao yeah lets bust his cap and show him how bad it sux. The only plans that aren't caped are old accounts that haven't been upgraded in over 2-3 years or if you are in the "elite class" and of course tmobile dealers/select employees. There is more too I'm sure....

I got hit by softcap once on laptop plan during the experiment (pushed hard to pass the limit), so the softcap is real. A buddy of mine got hit a few times (he got 12-14GB) too.
The only reason I haven't been throttled is because I use Wifi at home. I'm at 2.5GB for the month but if I had service in my room that would easily double.
My phone is my main computer. As people become more dependent on mobile devices they should be increasing bandwidth limits. It would be nice to see T-Mobile increasing bandwidth as well as speeds. What good is a 42Mbps connection if it's only that fast half the time?
Can you please comment on your experience... post Speedtest results and details like location, time, etc..
I'm planning on subscribing but not really looking forward to losing my $20 6GB Data plan discount.

At first I wasn't really down with losing my 6GB plan but come to think of it, I never had a month where I used more than 3GB [the amount I have now]
How much is 3 gigs? I pay $30 for my 6 gigs, have the SGS2 LTE but didn't get LTE.
My plan is as follows:
Canada wide MY10
200 Minutes
Early Evenings Starting at 6PM
Unlimited Text + MMS
2GB of Data, LTE
This is all for $70. I am paying an extra $5 for another gig, making it 3GB. The extra $5 also gets me data share for if I were to get an iPad or some kind of tablet. I had to call for that option My caller ID and voicemail is extra.
I also have a 40% discount for working at a Rogers dealer so it cuts down the cost.

6Gig $30 cost per Gig $5
10Gig $50 same price more data
I have not tried to bench mark my device but I can tell is is like night and day.

Agreed. Coming from a Galaxy S Captivate on Rogers, the GSII LTE is a massive improvement. I have noticed no slowdown or lag... ever.
As for my plan on Rogers:
300 daytime minutes
2500 outgoing SMS / unlimited incoming SMS
Unlimited Eve/wknds (6pm)
Unlimited incoming calls
10GB $50 LTE data plan
Total bill after discounts (including taxes & data plan): $62
Customer Retentions is your friend.
When did you get that plan? I'd be interested in something like that.
Do you get voicemail, call display anything like that with it?
I'm on the 10GB LTE plan, i also called them up to re-negociate some of my discounts because i've been paying 100$ for the past 3 years with my iphone and i am a student and dont work, they offered me an unlimited call and sms, value pack with 50 mins long distance + unoimited sms to USA and obviously 10gb of LTE, all for 80$/month tax included. I think i hit the jackpot because the lady at retention dept was VERY VERY happy and liked me a lot...i've also never encountered anybody who didnt get baffled by my plan and price
This is speeds i get in an area not guaranteed to get LTE. It's in laval, about 10km away from montreal and it's listed on the ROgers LTE maps as a "coming soon" area but obviously it's not.
Also this screen was taken while having 3/5 bars
I currently have a Nexus 5 bought from the Google Play Store. I am using it on the Sprint Network (Which I do not have LTE in my area) and I am tired of waiting. My contract is up in Jan. I am wondering how the service is through straight talk? Both T-Mo and AT&T have LTE in my area so I guess it doesn't matter what SIM card I use from Straight Talk. (I am leaning more towards AT&T) speed tests have shown it to be the faster of the 2. Is Straight a nation wide coverage, or will I have roaming when I leave my city while traveling? The $45 for Unlimited price is why I am asking.
I am currently using my nexus 5 on Straighttalk (ATT sim). I absolutely love it. For my area, it has almost as good of coverage as verizon, and the LTE is on average 4x-7x as fast. My average on verizon was about 4mbps. I am averaging 18-30mbps on ATTs network. I don't know if it was my old phone making verizon so slow here or what. it was an OG droid razr maxx.
Talk, sms, mms, LTE, etc all work great. Just remember, data isn't *really* unlimited on straight talk. I guess actually it is, but after you use 2.5gb, they throttle you way down. Super slow. I am going to used it for a few months, if i end up going over the 2.5gbs much, i am considering trying T mobiles 70 dollar truly unlimited data plan.
Good luck and enjoy your nexus :good:
PS, here is a speed test done on LTE about 5 minutes ago.

How is the Coverage (Not Data) any Dropped Calls? I travel a lot so will I be "roaming" if I leave my "home" city?
Straight talk works a little different than other carriers, it never shows you as "roaming", however you can "roam" in some areas, but not as many as if you had went with ATT or tmobile directly.
But hey, that's the beauty of non contract, if the coverage doesn't work for you, you are not bound by a contract.
For my area, i have experienced 0 dropped calls, i did have 1 spot, 1 time, 1 day that a call *almost* dropped, but it recovered. I have not experienced that again, even in the same spot that the first one almost dropped. Call quality has been as good, or better than verizon(that is compared to my old phone, so that's not apples to apples).
I switched from sprint after 10 years and I have no regrets. My service is superb. You can always buy a sim card and try it out with a random phone number. Just be aware that if you decide to port your sprint number later you will need a new sim.
I'm using an AT&T sim btw.

I too switched from Sprint to Straight talk, I honestly could not be happier. I ALWAYS have 4g whether it be HSPA+ from 2-8mbps or LTE from 13-30mbps. 0 dropped calls and no issues with anything else. Sometimes MMS takes awhile to get working but I've gotten good APN settings so it takes care of that.
Anyone here using T-Mobile? I have been using Aio Wireless, but since I generally go over 2GB I have been using the PRO option. It's $70 a month and you get only 7GB of usable data(then they throttle you so bad you can't even read an email). If i switch to T-Mobile pre-paid account(which are identical to post-paid now that they killed all contracts) I can get Unlimited LTE for the same price. So my question isn't about the network which I know varies by town, it's about the carrier in general. Do they throttle? Cap ya? On AIO for example I am hard-capped at well below what post-paid AT&T people can get. How are they on OTAs? I don't know how that works exactly with a Nexus device on a post-paid carrier I have always used an MVNO. Any insight as to how they operate and do business would be very helpful!
NO
Well maybe.
Check the tmobile threads
There's plenty of t-mobile threads. Pick your poison.

AWESOME that's exactly what I needed to know! They just turned on LTE here in my town recently so I'll find out about the coverage. The map is telling me its wall-to-wall city wide with no blindspots. At any rate it won't hurt to check them out for a month now that I know the speeds aren't throttled and they don't yell about hotspot usage.

Go prepaid for a month. I checked their coverage map and it said the same thing about my area. Bought the N5 from them as soon as it came in. Haven't seen LTE once at my house. I called plenty of times, but no progress.
What's this about them killing contracts? I signed a 2 year plan that I'm currently trying to get out of because their service is garbage, despite what their coverage map says.

Holy moly, 17 gigabytes! What do you do on your phone that's so data-intensive?

As I understand it, T-Mobile contracts no longer exist. But if you got into one prior to this change, you are probably stuck.

call them and change your plan to one of the no contract plans, theyll gladly change you. then a month later, go to another provider. i was 7 months into a two year contract when i called and changed my plan to a no contract plan several months ago, and ive changed it several times since. now im just all unlimited.

stream music(high quality), stream and download an occasion movie, download rom/kernel uodates often, hang out on xda, download rom/kernel updates for my nexus 4/nexus 7, keep my apps updated(2gb games too), keep my two other nexii apps updated.. i can go on. basically i use my nexus the way its meant to be used. and on top of that, i have 25-40mbps download/23mbps+ upload lte speeds. thats why all data plans should be unlimited, so people could use their devices how they were meant to be used.

That story makes me want to do business with them. I know they had little choice in the matter, but their desperation for our business has forced them to be so nice and easy to deal with that comparing them to Big Red or Ole Blue there is just no comparison anymore. I find myself pulling for them, and who would have thought I'd ever pull for a wireless company?

While the plans are the same for pre and post paid, they are a little different in that post paid plans will take preference when there is network congestion. The T-Mobile web site tells you that. I found the download speeds were generally the same for both plans but the upload speeds were a lot faster on postpaid. The upload test on pre paid would start fast then quickly switch to a much slower speed. Not a big deal for me as I think most apps benefit from faster download speeds. No caps as far as I know.
