help please?? enable mtp with screen not working?? - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well as Marshmallow requires you to physically select mtp mode every f*cking time you plug the phone in. Is there a way to do this with a faulty screen, because otherwise I can't copy all the pictures etc off the phone before getting it repaired/replaced?
What a clever design Google!

Ummm Actually its ur fault that ur screen is damaged .. Don't blame Google for it! And yes u "COULD" HV changed the charging option permenantly to MTP from developer options

Actually it's my missus's fault as it's her phone and I've tried before setting it as default, it just reverts back every time i unplug it.

Boot into TWRP, MTP is enable by default.

It's unrooted and completely stock. Doh.

You could always try a Toolkit and use that to install TWRP. Those programs, while some are against them, actually have benefits (and is probably your only solution at this moment). Look around the Original Development forum and you'll find them for PC and MAC/Linux, depending on your setup.

True, but doing that wipes data so I'm screwed either way. Lol.
What was wrong with the way kitkat worked? Plug in phone. Folders appear to view. Job done. No messing. Bloody Google!

Is your bootloader locked? If so then yes, my method wouldn't work for you.
However if it is unlocked you would just be installing TWRP to the recovery partition - it doesn't erase data.
One other method would be to use a program like AirDroid and copy your files that way. If your screen isn't completely useless this may work.

Yup bootloader is locked and the screen is completely useless so I believe I'm pretty boned!

[Q] [E C1505] [SOLVED] A bunch of Questions

Hi guys,
i'm somewhat of a noob when it comes to Android devices, so please excuse my stupid questions.
First some facts about my device:
ROOT: Enabled
BOOTLOADER: Locked and not changeable
ROM: Latest available official release
(hope that helps at least a bit)
#1: Is it possible to bypass the bootloader lock via root? If so, how?
#2: If there is no way to bypass the lock, is it possible to modify the rom anyway? Because i want to add the swapon/swapoff functionality to expand the available ram via a swap partition on my external SD card. (already checked via terminal if swapon/swapoff is available)
Thank you in advance for your help. I hope there's a solution to my problem.

You're right - your phone isn't allowed a bootloader unlock.
Without bootloader unlock, you can't change ROMs, but you can install ICS, which is a bit faster than Jelly Bean, even slightly more than CyanogenMod. In fact, even with an unlocked bootloader, I'm using ICS. Here's how: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2579233
Now, you said you're a noob when it comes to Android, so here's how to flash an FTF:
This process will remove all installed apps, contacts and settings. Any music, stuff on the internal storage (the one for music etc.) or the microSD will be preserved.
0. Make sure you're on Windows 7 or below. For some reason, this doesn't work with Windows 8 or 8.1, so you'll have to get a 7 PC somehow.
1. Download Androxyde's Flashtool here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920746 (use the unrestrict.li link, it's better)
2. Install it. By default, it is installed to C:\Flashtool. Open this folder, and then the "drivers" one. You'll see a driver setup file. Install the Flashtool and Fastboot drivers (in the list, they're on the bottom).
3. Now go back to the Flashtool folder, and open "firmwares". Put your FTF file here.
4. Open Flashtool. Click the lightning icon. Ensure that Flashmode is selected, and press OK. Choose the C1605 11.1.A.0.68 file, and press Flash.
5. When it tells you to, turn off your phone. Plug in the USB cable into your computer. Hold volume down (do not hold the power button), and (point of no return now) plug the phone into the USB cable connected to your phone. The notification light will glow green, and hopefully everything will start flashing. When the Flashtool window tells you to disconnect your phone and turn it on, do so. Set it up, and you're on ICS!
If you want to go back to Jelly Bean, download this FTF: https://www.mediafire.com/?3fmmkbmlqtjd6cy and put it into the "firmwares" folder. Now follow the guide step 4 onward, but select "11.3.A.2.23" for Jelly Bean.
Whew, long post.
So, in principle i downgrade the device to ics with an unlocked bootloader and then can flash a custom rom that is jb based, with all features i need to expand the ram?

No, ICS won't enable you to unlock your bootloader OR install CWM OR install a custom ROM. ICS is faster than any other custom ROM (other than XboosT, which is basically ICS on steroids), so if you can't have custom ROMs, the next best thing is ICS.
Another noob's question:
I installed Xposed a few days ago on my c1505 (stock firmware, locked bl). It worked perfectly. But i've read from another post that if i remove it my phone won't boot. So is there any way to remove it without breaking my device?? Waiting for answers.

But UltraGamerHD is still using his phone (in fact, he's making CM11...), right?
Right now, I uninstalled Xposed, rebooted, installed Xposed, rebooted. Nothing called a brick (although I did lose a cool Xposed mod for a reboot). Well, whatever. Uninstalling doesn't brick.
In fact, the problem in the topic is either:
1. The phone hard-bricking, which is not related to Xposed at all.
OR
2. The phone's battery being discharged to 0%, to the point where the phone cannot turn itself on and start charging.

why? twrp can be passcode protected as well. anyways, its easy to get around the recovery security features as well, if a person really wants to use the phone. you can always get a stolen phone that protected in the phone and recovery, then just flash the system img on it, and itll be a "new" phone after.

Yes same with any filesystem, nothing is ever deleted. It isn't easy though... But if you follow the link in my data recovery thread you can see its possible.

Just further to the above.
When you do a basic format or wipe, it just clears the filesystem entries but leaves the files. If you could mount the media in a pc, you could use standard data recovery methods.
Of course you can't mount mtp devices as a drive. You could take a userdata.img and uncompress it then mount it as a loop device on linux. There are windows alternatives too.
Only way to prevent is to overwrite the blocks with other data, even if it's empty data (eg you could dd an image. ).
Not sure if fastboot unlock does something similar.

Little bit of a shameless plug. But I made a thread/video a couple of days ago about using NFC to unlock your phone. If you have root/xposed framework you can download the module, authorize an NFC tag and just leave the NFC tag somewhere safe. This way if you forget your password you can unlock your phone with the NFC tag.
Here's my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/accessories/quick-unlocking-nfc-smartwatch-t2826592
Or....just write the password down and keep it somewhere safe. I guess that would be the most simple solution.
That's it. I'm dunking my phone in the toilet just in case I lose my phone later.

Not necessarily easily, but data is theoretically recoverable if there's enough of the storage medium left to stick under an electron microscope. The best you can hope for is to make recovery too financially prohibitive for the attacker to consider.

G3 Bricked/Boot Loop

So I read other threads with similar issues but nothings seemed to work.
Basically my LG G3 (AT&T) started acting odd one day. Resetting every 3-5 minutes, overheating (more than usual), wouldn't connect to Wi-Fi. Eventually I reset it and the problems got worse. I downloaded a boot logger that can't figure out why, there's no physical damage (EDIT: when this first started, I noticed that the little pink water damage sticker on the battery was, well pink, however I never got it wet and could've been pink before but I don't know), I factory reset it again and nothing, swapped the battery and everything. I could've done more but it is still under warranty so I kinda gave up and decided to exchange it.
The new one is on the way and comes tomorrow or Wednesday however now my G3 won't even turn on, or rather it stays locked on the boot screen (the LG logo specifically) it won't go past that. I tried to hard reset it with the power button and it gets to the screen with the android logo with its chest open and just resets again.
I'm not trying to fix it anymore I just want advice on wiping it basically as I can't even wipe it through my computer. With my last phone what I did before selling it, and what I wanted to do again, is encrypt it, then factory reset to just be extra safe and I wanna know if there's anyway I can do this basically with the phone like this, or if I can get it to a state where I can do that again. I'm not all too familiar with android this low level so I want to know if I can basically "hard" wipe it because I can't even connect it to my computer (it keeps resetting).
Also one time on a boot it said the kernel crashed, don't know how relevant that is as it only happened once out of at least 1,000 times by this point.
Any help would be appreciated, super frustrated right now.
Thank you!

Wait. What are you trying to do? Why are you needing to flash it if you haven't already voided your warranty? Rooting/Custom rom "voids warranty" in itself.
Flash a tot or kdz puts the phone 100% complete back to stock as you bought it.

Tried to boot recovery from bootloader? I believe it's possible to flash a full ota image with lock bootloader, but someone correct me if i am wrong.
Cheers

yes, the phone reboots before finish
So, it is heating when you try booting bootloader and then recovery?
Sent from my Google Pixel using XDA Labs
yep, it won't start without heating
So it's heating itself even when booted to only bootloader?
That's very weird, never heard of that before.
When that's the case, maybe it's time for a replacement
Any warranty left maybe?

Bro, i also have the same problem as OP. I am able to reach recovery and i also did a OTA flash but the device is still bootlooping. Presently, I am trying to flash a factory image but my device's bootloader is locked and i cant turn on OEM unlock from developer options as its greyed out and unpressable.
Please help me in flashing the factory image, the phone has no passwords or google account signed in atm.
Thanks in advance, I will be waiting anxiously for ur reply.

If it's bootlooping, how did you see OEM unlock is greyed out?

I have 2 Pixels that both have the same symptom. I was lucky enough to get them to boot so I could unlock the bootloader, but flashing the factory image didn't make any difference. Based on what I've seen on the Google forums, it appears some of theses devices have faulty memory which is most likely the cause of the bootloop. Both of mine have Samsung memory. I'd be curious if your device does as well.

Do you have a Verizon pixel maybe? Cause OEM unlock should not be grayed out, even with locked bootloader.

No, neither device is reliable or usable. Sometimes after it's been off for a while, it will power on and be functional for a short period of time. If the memory is faulty, then I believe the motherboard has to be replaced which isn't worth the cost of the repair. I may contact google support and see if they may give me a trade in credit for a pixel 2 or 3.
my pixel turned out to be verizon, i was able to unlock bootloader and flash a factory image.. The problem still exists. Bootloops are still happening:crying:

Yep. Same issue here. Our devices are likely paperweights I'm afraid.
Can confirm, I woke up to an infinite bootloop this morning after applying the December security patch. Seems to be a hardware issue that just kills the phone.
Have you guys have tried to cool the phone down like putting it on top of an ice bag with saltwater, like a zip lock bag, give it a minute on top of the brine and then try? Should give you some time until you can get into the rom and tap the unlock button?

Another bug? Losing internal storage

So randomly, haven't figured out what is causing it or tracking it. Used an SD card for a few days but every time I lock the screen (for any length of time) and turn it back on, it scans the SD card. Almost acts like it unmounts itself. Got to the point where it corrupted the SD card. I've taken it out and only using the internal storage. Now it is losing/unmounting itself. My downloaded ringtones and notification sounds don't work. When I open solid explorer, pops up with a message saying access denied and there's no folders.
Only way I've noticed to bring it back, I opened stock camera app and click on the camera roll. Once exited out, reopened solid explorer and the folders are back like nothing happened?!
Currently only have bootloader unlocked and rooted with magisk
You have to play back your bootloader backup because you have the bootloader with fastboot on the phone.
bootloader with fastboot = no mtp, ptp mode and the sd card is constantly ejected and re-scanned
The edl tool flashet a 160kb abl.img for bootloader unlock ( with fastboot)
What do you mean I have to play back the bootloader?
I did make a backup of the full device before I did the unlock option. Do I restore just the bootloader?
EDIT: I did read through the other thread about los. I've downloaded both yours (disabler) and DrakenFX abl.zip files. Which one do I flash in twrp?

Wait. You were about to return the phone because YOU messed it up by unlocking the bootloader and modifying it? Here's an idea. Stop fking with the phone and modifying the software and maybe it will work correctly! SMH.

Understandable, I do like some control over my phone. Rooting helps with that. If I'm not able to unlock it then it defeats the purpose for me owning it. Yes I've returned a Pixel 3xl when they sent me a verizon model. The oem unlock was disabled and I wasn't able to unlock the bootloader.
