If you wish to s-off then you need to downgrade to a supported hboot, search the general thread (search:downgrade) for how to.
If you wish to stay s-on and have most of the advantages of s-off (root/recovery/roms) then you need to use HTCdev, but your warranty could be voided.
To me the best way would be; downgrade, revolutionary to s-off, install 4ext recovery, and use it to install super user.

Y y yes, although you can only flash them via fastboot with HTCdev unlock.

It may be supported down the line..... Not a guarantee though.

I rooted my phone earlier this week using the unlock bootloader method that HTCdev provided, and then rooted my phone, still have S-ON. At first I was very excited, but as I began trying to do other stuff, like flashing the kernel to overclock, flashing a rom and such I found out that it was not possible to do while I still had S-ON. So i went back, locked the bootloader, downgraded the bootloader 0.98.0000 and then used the Revolutiony.io to get the S-OFF and unlock the bootloader. It worked like a charm, and the method described in the guide:

is very easy to go by. It is, as mentioned earlier entirely up to you whether or not you want to do it. But I won't suggest waiting for Revolutionary to support the updated bootloader, since it might never happen and you'll end up growing weary knowing that you'll miss out all the fun you could have with a custom rom, overclocking and so on

it is possible to flash a custom rom, look at this tutorial i've posted before, you only have to do it via fastboot. I'm not sure about the kernel thing.

you can flash custom roms, but you'll have to do it via fastboot. So it takes a bit more time. i'm not sure about other differences
Below is the details of my phone, I am not able to S-Off the phone, require help. I tried couple of things however gives me error.

Using htcdev keeps the phone S-ON. You'll still be able to run custom roms, but can't flash a new radio.

I refered to a you tube video " How to S-off htc desire s" the first video that shows up. My phone is already rooted using the hdc dev kit, however when I am trying to do s-off the software gives just a message "Error". It also fails at signature.
do let me know what more information can I provide.
If you have a guide that I can try and share the results with you do send me that as well. I am new to rooting the phone, so sorry for not providing any info that is required.
You either htcdev unlock or you s-off
You'll now need to relock your phone to undo the htcdev and then downgrade you phone in order to properly s-off using revolutionary.

No, it's S-ON, but writable on /system partition due to HTCDev unlock. It only means that you don't know the difference between S-OFF, rooting and HTCDev unlock - and misleading others.

Then please tell me why my Bootloader says:

S-OFF ... Security off
Rooting ... Grant root for the device, like su on linux
HTCDev unlock ... unlocks the bootloader
But its ok I just tried to help...
Then you can try to avoid confusion providing more detailed info, like:
"I have used XTC Clip to gain S-OFF, then used htcdev.com, without any particular reason, then got rooted by SuperOneClick"
Your previous post can mislead some non advanced users that SOC can provide S-OFF, without using additional tools.

Ok..
I unlocked my HTC Desire S following the instructions on HTCDev.com. Afterwards I rooted the Phone,installed Busybox and installed ClockworkMod Recovery using the SuperOneClick tool for Windows 7.
And now I am able to flash Rom and Radios.
Nope to upgrade your Radio you have to be S-OFF
Maybe it was shipped with S-OFF because I had a brandig first.
I doubt that it was shipped S-OFF and even if, why would you unlock it with HTCdev ?

And you can flash radios only because you had a phone which already was S-OFF, either during manufacturing or by XTC-Clip, and you just didn't understand it and uselessly unlocked it while you could have done whatever you wanted with it. And S-OFF is the only reason you can flash radios, and HTCDev unlock didn't actually add anything and didn't allow you anything - just as it won't allow any non-S-OFF user to flash radios, and won't turn S-ON to S-OFF. But what do I know, I was just passing here.

It is unlikely, but certainly possible. In the early days of Desire S development (back when we had to use the XTC-Clip hardware to obtain S-Off) there were some people who got their devices brand new already S-Off.
ok, back to the topic:
the simpliest way to gain s-off without xtc-clip is to downgrade the bootloader to HBOOT 0.98, and gain S-OFF with Revolutionary. After you did this you can run the latest ruu, which doesn't influence wether your s-off or s-on. Finally, you've got a device with hboot 2.02 and s-off.
After using revolutionary you are already S-OFF!
If you want to upgrade your HBOOT don't run a RUU AFAIK it could brick your device ... use this tutorial

I have to disagree @Jack_R1 the unlock via htcdev wasn't completely useless as it managed to void his HTC warranty! :laugh: logging that fact with HTC in the process!

This is for International hTC One XL/Evita - Hboot 2.14 & firmware 3.17 (Orange UK)
If you own AT&T One X please look elsewhere, this guide is not for your phone
There is an abundance of information scattered in these forums and not all root methods/exploits work universally due to variation in firmware builds and Hboots.
I had to read a lot of threads to figure out how to S-off my Orange UK One XL with Hboot 2.14 and firmware build 3.17.
I was only interested in attaining S-off but had to start with HTCDev bootloader unlocking which I didn't really want to do but none of the known root exploits worked on my firmware.
I am sharing this hoping it would help others avoid taking pills for headaches when pursuing this noble quest
AIM:
Provide a short guide to others with similar device and configuration on where to start and simple clear steps to follow with needed links.
PREREQUISITES:
1. latest htc drivers for your Windows PC/laptop if you have one of those. Check here.
2. a working adb environment preferably from latest Android SDK, if you don't have this already set up please check here.
3. "USB debugging" must be checked under Phone settings>Developer options
4. an original htc USB cable is strongly recommended.
5. phone charged at above 50%
6. basic knowledge of using command prompt (cmd) in Windows and adb commands.
STEPS:
So in my case the steps were:
[1] Unlock bootloader through htcdev.com
[2] Flash/install TWRP recovery
This is done manually. All-In-One Toolkit didn't work for me BTW.
1. download latest TWRP recovery for One XL/Evita from here
2. you can rename file for easier command prompt typing later, like TWRP5.img
3. place file recovery file in your adb/fastboot folder
4. connect phone in fastboot mode to PC, make sure it displays fastboot USB on phone before you proceed.
5. start command prompt from within fastboot folder by right clicking inside folder and choosing "open prompt here", type following command:

C:\yourFastbootFolder> fastboot flash recovery TWRP5.img
Not a bad idea to test your recovery by making a nandroid backup before proceeding to next step.
[3] Flash a custom rom (root)
All custom roms are rooted by definition. If you chose e.g. ViperXL like I did remember to flash boot.img extracted form same rom zip afterwards, otherwise bootloop!
You can of course flash a SuperSU zip instead to gain root but I don't see the point.
[4] SuperCID
This is the simplest way that I found accidentally during my endless searches, all credit goes to @beaups for this one and @Austempest for sharing :good:
1. connect phone to PC in Android mode (mode where you can use phone)
2. Run the following command from command prompt (CMD):

To enter adb shell, then enter following commands after each other:

# echo -ne "11111111" | dd of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p5 bs=1 seek=20
3. Reboot to bootloader and hopefully you'll see 11111111 as your CID ...... yes
[5] S-Off
Now that your are rooted with SuperCID you can just follow @beaups simple steps for S-Off found here Facepalm S-Off
That is it.... you broke your shackles :laugh:
I am not a dev and for sure not taking credit for other people's work, merely giving back and hoping this assists clarify stuff and save some time.

You mentioned one click is only for AT&T phones, I guess you mean All-In-One Toolkit by hason2000, you see even in the tool's thread it's not stated explicitly that tool works only for AT&T, while the respective threads for these exploit state that it's for AT&T One X not negating other international versions!
Most guides/tools are for North America and some Australia but very few for Europe which BTW only recently came on board with 4G/LTE.
So figuring out, especially for noobs, what is what with all these international variations for one device and huge amount of information, while searching doesn't always provide an answer is a tedious task and can end up miserably :crying:

Only AT&T Phones are different in the case of unlocking/rooting because they can't use HTCDEV. Every other onexl is the same for unlocking/rooting.

i cant get root, because my touchscreen not functional after flashed a custom rom. i had success until step 3, i cant proceed to step 4 as i cant use my touches when the rom loaded. i didnt have any back up. i already searched around to dgrade my touchscreen firmware, but it needs root. im stuck here, i can flash custom cwm recovery, install custom rom but cant touch screen. the default cm10.1 dont have android debugging enabled by default, i cant enable it cos i cant touch the screen. if i restore to stock ruu, i can touch screen n all works, but i had a problem sync google contacts.
The reason im getting my hands on custom rom is bcos my stock XL(Asian version) will neve sync google contacts properly, i tried to flash JB stock RUU, but its same. then, i started to tamper my fon with unlocking bootloader via htcdev, flash cwm(twrp mess on my sdcard storage). i had experience on older htc devices but its my 1st time on the htc one series. right now, im on evita s-on, unlocked bootloader, hboot 2.14, cwm recovery(twrp mess on my sdcard storage), not-super CID. I 'm left with a non-touchable cm10.1, i can flash any rom that supports s-on. tried to relock bootloader but i cant flash stock ICS ruu.flashing stock JB RUU is ok. my target now is to s-off n superCID.

Warning: It is not a good idea to upgrade only the bootloader if you intend to flash the latest CM10 builds! Avoiding RUU and unlocking again out of laziness will probably get you in trouble afterwards. RUU is definitely the safer way. You'll find a good collection of ROMs here

I simply needed an updated bootloader in order to enable flashing the latest CM10 nightlies. This did the job.

That's exactly why you should not do it that way. You may get issues along the way as a result of the software not properly utilizing your hardware. This is why you're supposed to update hboot. What you did is more like tricking it into thinking you updated the firmware.

As exad said, CM 10 didnt want you to update just the hboot it wanted you to flash 3.18 RUU or equal to get updated firmware.
The requirement to install 3.18 RUU is listed as a requirement for CM. The hboot is what is checked but things like radio, adsp and wcnss are what actually needed to be updated, which you have not updated.
All you have successfully done is beaten the basic check for if you flashed the 3.18 RUU without actually doing what you were told to do.

I recently purchased an AT&T HTC One X and I want to unlock bootloader and eventually root the phone. After some reading and following a few tutorials I am stuck. I just want to clear a few things up. First i followed htc AIO toolkit tutorial to unlock my htc through htcdev but error came up. I read further and saw people mentioning that I need to have s-off to unlock bootloader. I am just a little confused and would appreciate if someone would guide me in the right direction as to what steps to take to accomplish me unlocking bootloader and rooting my phone and maybe in the future to flash some custom roms.

You do not need s-off to unlock bootloader. Get supercid then unlock bootloader, then gain root, then optional but recommend gain s-off. For us to help you need to give the current firmware of your device. To do this, restart your phone and hold down the volume down button until you are in the bootloader screen. Give the info you see at the very top.

I'm assuming you have 3.18 with that stock hboot but double check in settings to be safe. If you are 3.18 just follow the steps on how to gain supercid/unlock/root for 3.18. You can go to the FAQs stickied here for getting you to the right direction.

To be more specific, you need to use the 3.18 root method to get temp root which also gets you SuperCID. Just any SuperCID method won't work. Click the Everything Evita link in my signature, within that resource thread navigate to the root section and click on the 3.18 root method link and follow those instructions. Once that's done you can go to htcdev and unlock your bootloader, then install TWRP 2.6 recovery.

I think you're confused as to what s-off is and unlocking is, they're two entirely different things. You don't use htcdev to get s-off. You use htcdev to unlock your bootloader, and no you cannot unlock your bootloader without htcdev. Unlocking your bootloader doesn't give you root, after unlocking the bootloader you must install a custom recovery and then you can gain root. After gaining root you can get SuperCID and then you can get s-off. If all you want to do is remove some system apps, then you'll just need to unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery, and install root.

You don't need s-off to delete bloatware (pre-installed apps). Just use HTCDev.com to unlock the bootloader. Then install custom recovery, then either flash SU or a rooted ROM to get root.
The process to s-off is simple (see Facepalm method in the Original Android Development subforum). However, it requires SuperCID. Since the CID is protected on Sense 5, you will not be able to SuperCID (and therefore S-off).
But as already mentioned, you don't need S-off to root and delete bloatware.
I'm at a loss and somewhat confused.
I read in one place that I need to s-off to update my radio, but in order to do that I need super-cid.
so I'm trying to change my cid from ROGER001 to 11111111.
Now I'm reading that I can s-off without super-cid? All I'd like to do is update my radio and kernel so my phone stops losing signal and stops rebooting. I should also mention that I already went to htcdev and unlocked my bootloader.

I have tried the script, it failed, manual method, that failed.

Nope, wherever you read that, its completely incorrect.
It says right in the s-off method instructions, in big bold print that SuperCID is required: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155071
If you are having trouble with s-off, the other solution to random reboots on Sense 5 is to install the Beastmode kernel.

The x-factor exploit fails since its looking for the AT&T CID. For other CIDs, you need to edit it manually using the hex edit method.
If you have trouble with installing Beastmode, I think some folks have had to install Beastmode 2.0 before installing 3.5.
After many attempts, boot loops beastmode reloaded 3.5 finally took.
So now I need to ask if I need s-off, i've done everything except upgrade my radio.
I'll only update my radio if the antenna drops keeps dropping out.

No it won't work, it's not for this phone. Only ever use guides specifically for this device or you could brick it. As I've already told you, you absolutely cannot root this device without unlocking the bootloader through htcdev first. I'm not sure why you're still searching for ways to do it, they do not exist. There's no point in coming here for advice if you don't even listen to the answers you're given.

You use htcdev to unlock your bootloader, and no you cannot unlock your bootloader without htcdev. Unlocking your bootloader doesn't give you root, after unlocking the bootloader you must install a custom recovery and then you can gain root. After gaining root you can get SuperCID and then you can get s-off. If all you want to do is remove some system apps, then you'll just need to unlock the bootloader, install a custom recovery, and install root.

some people say me "when using htcdev for unlock your warranty get void" thats true ?
Absolutely nowhere within this forum does it say you need s-off to root, because you don't. I've already told you that. I can't view that video for some reason but unless it specifically says it's for the Evita don't use it. All you need is in the Everything Evita link in my signature, do not get information anywhere else, XDA is the only place you need to look.
As I've already told you, if you want to root you need to unlock your bootloader and install a custom recovery first. In the link I mentioned there are guides on how to do this, you need to follow the guide that pertains to your current firmware version.
