One killer function of a smart watch is the ability to tap and pay. Considering this is one of the only watched with NFC I would think it would be a priority to get it up and running in the USA. It supposedly works in other countries. Or do you have to have a Samsung phone paired to it to have it work? Anyone have it working anywhere?

Ex Samsung Note buyer here.
It was a toss up between the Moto X Pure Style and the Sony Xperia Z5 premium and went for the Moto on price.
I'm assuming it's not region locked like Samsung phones as I'm in the UK and need it to work out of the box. Network bands seem to be OK.
I've ordered from the states and I like that the US version has CDMA also if I need that on my travels.
So bye bye Samsung and HELLO MOTO!
I agree with you. I got a note 5 about 2 weeks ago and after experiencing touchwiz lag I just can't take it. It has the best hardware but touchwiz just ruins it. So I ended up preordering the the moto x pure for a more vanilla android experience.
I also like the subtle moto features like moto voice. I used google voice and siri often, so having an always listening feature is killer.

I always go completely unlocked.
Currently have 3 different PAYG sims from 3 networks plus some American sims though they differ from UK ones which never run out until you spend all the credit.
Maybe T-Mobile will finally break open the American market and go with the unspent credit model? LOL
Was asking just so you double checked the bands to the UK networks. I know the US version wont work with Three.

I don't have Three but can't see why it wouldn't work the bands listed are identical aren't they?
Just received notice of an update for the Gear S App for my Gear.
Will have to test it out once I get the chance.

I think they're two different things. Samsung Pay (for phones) was updated today and in the release notes it says it supports mobile payments. Two Samsung Gear apps got updates (compass and ?) but they aren't related to Pay.
So at some point in the near future I'd imagine Samsung Pay for Gear will appear in the Gear app store. There's nothing currently on the Gear S2 (at least my 3G version) to update relating to Samsung Pay so it'll have to be an app store download. Unless the new Wi-Fi Gear S2 update for the U.S. has Samsung Pay baked in.
I had hoped that today's USA S2 Wifi update was going to include the NFC tap-to-pay functionality.

Yeah...I realized also after that I got duped. I got really excited and was really looking forward to nfc payment support for the gear s2.

Samsung pay for gear s2 updated today
I just downloaded 2 different Samsung Pay USA apps for the gear S2, which noted the apps were pre-installed . Although after searching the watch, gear app, and gear app store there does not seem to be any such app still. I'm in Louisiana and have the standard sport (Bluetooth only) version.
I am wondering if Samsung pay will work on the watch when not paired with a phone. Like if I forget my phone can I use the watch to pay for things? Or if my phone has custom software and can't use Samsung pay. Can I still use my watch?
Samsung pay is not on our watch yet. As I understand though Samsung pay will not work on a rooted phone

I have an S3 that it's working on, but i'm curious if I can install the app on my phone to be able to take advantage of promotions offered only from the app?? I found the apk and installed it, but it would not open.
When you pair a Samsung smartwatch or band Samsung manifests all the data required for the app to appear in the Play Store and work. So as a meatspace workaround you could buy an old, cheap Samsung wrist device that supports Pay and pair it.

I am using my gear S3 with a Google pixel 2 XL and am able to use the app on my phone. When you open the app in the Wear, it should prompt you to download the companion. I can't pay with my phone, but the promotions are available thru the Wear app
I am using my Gear S3 Frontier with a rooted OnePlus 6T and I am able to access the promotions through the Galaxy Wearable app and pay with Samsung Pay from my phone. I am able to use Samsung Pay by hiding the Samsung Play Watch plug-in in Magisk using Magisk Hide.

I received my HTC U11+ from HTC UK, friend of mine ordered it and shipped it to me.
Anyhow, wherever I try to use my Android Pay, it just won't work. Nothing happens basically. Anyone have any similar experience in the US?

If the phone is rooted Google pay won't work. I have the same problem I bought mine on eBay and it had been rooted and I can't use Google pay I would love to be able to set it up as it is very useful.
