I just cracked my screen, and ordered a replacement online. I saw tear down video online saying that I could use some simple sharp tool to open back cover, does the material itself is forgiving on prying? Anything I need to be careful when I open it?

I've watched those videos myself for when the day comes I need to put in a new battery. It looks pretty straight forward and easy from the videos I've watched. Just becareful not to break the clips that are holding the back on. I think the easiest route would be to use a Guitar pick.
Best advice though is just watch the videos over and over a few times to get the best way and idea possible

Thanks, did you notice that Qi charging pad (black color) doesn't have wire contact point? I am wondering how is it going to connect phone power?

The video I saw it looked like the Qi charger had a ribben cable that wrapped around the battery to the other side of the motherboard, behind the LCD. I think that's where it connects to transfer the power

I know that brownish ribbon coil is Qi + NFC, what about the black one which stick on the back of the cover? Is that just a spacer to separate between the case and coil?

So it just sets in there? There's no securing it down?
There is no real Need to. The back holds it in place. i thought of some thin 3M tape but would make it thicker. I have seen some thinner wireless receivers out there but they are hard to get and charge with half the power.

I have this one as well and the 'power qi' labeled charger I ordered came in today. Works great! 'Very' slight bulge but really hard to see. I was expecting worse, and think this bulge thing is overstated a bit.
I've got the Trident Aegis case which is pretty bulky and creates a good gap. Although a little more finicky (must be in the right spot) than without the case, it charges fine.
Overall I'm very happy...and I just ordered another charger.... my eBay seller in Hong Kong got the first one to me in 10 days! (I'm in the US).
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 2
What charger base is he using? Or do you guys use?
The insert took me 10 days to get...US here as well. Well worth the wait and way better then the one from samsung!
Like i said with the case you cant tell anything is there and without it you really cant tell either. I mean that tiny back would not close if it was really bad!
I am using the Nexus Charging Orb that i got when i order my nexus 4. Straight from the play store. Its a little pricey but its crazy awesome quality and direct from google. It is a 1000mA charger
I will see if i can get a charging screen shortly
I'm using the same charging receiver . Got it from an online retailer (fasttech) at much cheaper price.
quick delivery, but this is the first time i'm having a problem with what they sent.
This one is not working for me. Quite erratic. It just keeps on connecting and disconnecting the charging .
maybe I'm the only one receiving a defective piece. Will wait for fasttech's response before heading to aliexpress.
If you hate the "huge" bulge, just get another cheap back cover and cut a hole for the charger (with heated knife or something really sharp), then secure it with some tape. Put even the thinnest case on top and you're ready to go.
That is unless the case is transparent
Apparently my phone is deciding to freak out ever since I have decided to upgrade to a Nexus 5 when/if it comes out in Oct. I did my forum search/homework and found that by pushing the left side of the display about mid way the screen would come back on. Given the right amount of pressure and duration the screen will stay on. So I thought it was just a loose cable and decided to be brave and open it up and reseat the cable.
I amazingly was able to open up the housing without breaking anything... a first for me. I located the cable about half way down the left side and did what I thought was reseating it. I popped the display/board back into the back housing and snapped it down. Well it turns out that if I snap down the right side and the bottom but leave the left side unsnapped everything works without a hitch. As soon as I snap down the left side the screen goes black and I have to do the pressure on the left side of the screen thing to get the display working.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? I'm not adverse to opening the case up again but I don't know what exactly I should do once I have it open now that reseating the cable didn't work. Is it possible that a bit of felt or something on top of the cable would work to get enough pressure on it? Should I blow the whole thing out with compressed air in case there is dust or grime in the connector? Seriously, I am open to suggestions.

The issue is most likely with the flex cable itself and not the connector. a rip or a weakspot. One person managed to get it working by unfolding the cable. If you're able, you could try replacing the flex cable.

I had the same exact issue. The cable is supposed to be bent like that, but if you unbend it, the display comes on. Unfortunately doing that caused my cable to short and the phone caught on fire.. I had to buy a nexus 4 (only $400, happy with it) instead of repairing the hox for $250+

Yah I think 10-20$ on a flex cable is worth the risk compared to 400 for a new phone though..
Thanks for the info! Sounds like I'm toasted. It sucks because I babied the hell out of this phone. No drops, no moisture, always in a case with a screen protector. On the other hand I beat the hell out of my old LG Optimus S. Dropped that thing more times than I can remember and its still going strong as my dedicated car MP3 player. Go figure.
I may pick up a Galaxy 3 on craigslist for $250 and then sell it when the new Nexus comes out. I should be able to sell it for $250 and thus not lose any money. Still rather have the HOX screen than the crap Galaxy screen though.

Well, if it requires more than a simple unplug and plug back in it may not be for me. Heck it was a minor miracle to get the back plate off and put back on without a mushroom cloud.
That said, craigslist may have an answer. S3 for $250 or s4 for $300. If they actually go through with the sales I may buy both and resell the one I can live without. Then I could try my hand at fixing this thing and sell the other. Silver lining and all that...

Yeah replacing the flex cable would be more difficult
Well, the the supposed s4 turned into the seller trying to pass off an s3 as an s4. The s3 was busted all to hell. So I am thinking that I may try my hand at a HOX repair.
Would I be replacing the whole LCD or just the ribbon? I did some looking around and I couldn't really find a One XL lcd flex cable. Found a bunch for My Touch and other phones though which is quite helpful.
LCD would be easier but you'll want to get one with the exact same color flex cable as you have now to make life easier on yourself because there are 3 different screens for the onexl.

Full LCD is about $80+ right? Could you point me in the direction of the cheaper alternative? Also, if you would, what would it take to replace just the cable?
No i cant because I don't know which of the 3 LCDs you have. Also 80 is around what you should expect to pay. Don't go too cheap or you'll have yourself a cheaply made LCD that burns out after 2 months.
Ive never done this for this phone before but i imagine Replacing the flex cable involves heating the cable on the LCD end using a heat gun to soften the glue and then carefully removing the cable on the LCD end then heating the new cable to get it to attach to the LCD and then solidifying with a glue gun. Once it's all dried in place you can snap in the connector on the other end to the board.
If anyone else wants to add to this feel free.

I dont know if you'll want it to be honest. Even though I've taken mighty fine care of it I just realized that the speaker doesn't work. The earpiece works but the speaker on the back doesn't. Bugger. Well I figure I've saved roughly $250 by using straight talk... so I guess spending for a new phone isn't thaaat bad
Dead HoX... RIP
Welp... the phone died. No worky none. It doesn't even turn on anymore. So I broke down and bought an Optimus G for $225. Not exactly a steal but it should work until something better comes along and I can resell it.
I will miss my HoX. It was a good phone and the dev community was fantastic. It and this forum will be missed.

The magnets combined with the sticky surface of the charger makes it nearly impossible to fall off by accident. I think there is a better chance the entire mount will fall before the phone comes off due to a bump.

I am wondering how the charger performs when your phone is using bluetooth to stream music, GPS, WiFi, etc
Thanks for the video. I really appreciated.
after using the GS5 with just the sticky pad and no magnets, it's pretty clear that the magnets are required - it just doesn't hold that well after a few uses. They send a little magnet sticker that I put on the inside of the wireless charging cover (that I received today), and it works great.

Not sure I understand the question. Are you asking if you can split the sticker and use it on two devices? Then, no. If you're asking will the sticker fit either one device or the other? Then yes. I had to cut it to a smaller size to fit the inside cover of the GS5.

If I were you I wouldn't... The cable has an extremely weak magnet, it comes off at the slightest touch. It would be impossible to use whilst the phone is charging. I could have got the really cheap cable from Amazon but because of the reviews about it's weak magnet I instead got a more expensive cable from mobilefun.co.uk. Unfortunately it was the same poor quality cable.

It's not that the magnet itself is weak, it's rather the design of it.
I can lift my phone with the magnet, even shake a little up and down without it falling off.
However, as you might know the easiest way to remove a magnet is to tilt/angle it, which the design of this magnet makes way too easy.
After all, the entire connector was designed around being mounted inside a charging stand, where the phone's angle to the connector would never change. Using it as a separate cable was never intended, the cable you can buy for example at dx-box is the very same cable that is supposed to be inside that charging stand.
I think if they designed a cable where the plastic around the magnet and the connectors was laying flush against the phone, tilting the cable would become less of an issue.
That said, I can use the phone just fine with the magnet connected as long as I don't pull on the cable, as the magnet is strong enough to handle the weight of the cable with no problem.

Yup you are 100% right. I can indeed lift the phone up using the connector. The problem is with the tilt/angle as you've already mentioned above.
any of you is using thie cable from witrigs ?
http://www.witrigs.com/custom-magnetic-charging-cable-for-sony-xperia-z1-compact-black
i am also considering the magnector X, but if i plan to replace back by glass one, then purchase of this from witrigs is better economically. But don't know how does it works? How is it with charging speed and battery life?
and the last one, anyone using this original cable? and how much is it "original" ?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Ori..._PDA_Cables_Adapters&var=&hash=item3f32e3085b
I've bought one from Amazon and returned it, the cable was falling off at the slightest touch and it was even difficult to set right to charge.
I wanted it for charging the phone in my car, which already has a usb socket adapter, but with the falling out problem it was a no-go from the start.
On the plus side, I ended up with a Supremery charging dock, which is cheaper than Sony and works better (for me at least).
I don't use it in the car - just to be clear
but was it the same from amazon that i linked, or something far cheaper, "branded " by Sony ?
How is it with battery life on Supremery charging dock? Do you see shorter life and longer charging? Am asking because some guys were complaining for those on not original dock.
Thanks
Try this one out, apparently its got fantastic build quality and a very strong magnet.
Every review I have seen has given it 5/5 and most people mentioned buying another for the car/office etc :good:

they also do a standard cable...

I really would like to buy this Magnector X cable but I have not found a good way to buy and ship this to Austria/Europe. Any ideas where I can buy this with realistic shipping prices to get this inside the european union?
I bought 2 pieces of Magnector directly from producer: http://magnector.com/?product=magnector-x-adaptersony-xperia-magnetic-adapter
Calculating with delivery to Slovakia it was around 26€.
I am more than satisfied with this product and totally recommend it.
You can have only problem if you are using some case. It is designed for use without it.

What do you mean by that?
What do you want to tell us with that?
Do you mean "Magnector X" ?
The Question is: Is it nevertheless a good product?
(I don't really care if they just copy&paste the description of another "premium" product)
I already ordered two of those cables so maybe I have wasted some euros on a cable no one of the posters above has ever tested?!

I have 3 of the dx-box ones:
http://dx-box.com/brand-new-magneti...dapter-for-sony-xperia-z1-xperia-z-ultra.html
The magnet may not be ask strong as the High Performance one, but its plenty strong enough for me. I use one in my car and the lead has never detached even when I have gone over pot holes or bumps in the road.
Also, at home I find it stays attached well enough for everyday usage.
Ordered from ebay same product as Sony official except it didn't have Sony logo and was like 3 times cheaper.
I have received the magnector cable and can confirm that the magnet is very powerfull. One can easily lift up the phone by the cable.
It doesn't however automatically snap on to the two (tiny) charging pins. It takes a little bit of practice to make it work.
Has anyone seen a teardown or something showing the internals of the shield tablet? I'm wondering if it would be possible to add qi charging. It doesn't take up a lot of room and I know it's been added to other tablets.

Any luck?
Hi,
Just stumbled on this post of yours via a Google search and wondered if you ever found a solution?
I'm already set up with a Qi charger and it would be nice to use with the Shield.
Thanks!

Not really. I found someone on the nvidia forum that claims to have removed the back cover, but no pictures or better info.

I had mine almost opened ... well, I dropped it from knee height, and back cover pop-opened on one side. I just pressed it back, it has only plastic clamps to hold there, but it may have some screws on other side or something.
Next time I will try to take a photo ..
Here's one:
Also have you tried this?
