Rooting problem

Hello everyone, im new to android. Ive jailbroken all my iphones but cant seem to find a way of just rooting. Im on official ota 4.1.1 ive found tons of instructions on rooting and custom roms but it seems that I need to install/flach a custom rom. I just want to root snd use my stock firmware. Is this possible? If so, how? Thanks

Use this guide and flash the no-wipe version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984436. It is this file:http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390214368362234350. This will flash a pre-rooted version of the JB OTA and keep all your settings, data and apps untouched. You can stay just stock rooted at that point, or you can proceed to unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery if you want to. Or you can use this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439. It is a little more involved and can be more prone to errors for newer users.
Thank you, thats what im looking for.

Is rooting safe?

I have rooted all of my Android phones and I'm worried about it. I just don't want my phone to be useless eventually. Is it safe to be rooted? Like will being rooted cause my phone to become useless?

Why would it be useless? The big concerns are making sure you perform root correctly, making sure you get updates here vs. expecting the OTA on a rooted phone, and warranty-related issues (warrany is void once rooted, which is easily detected). Otherwise, you end up with more capability, not less. Shouldn't be a problem...
So rooting phones in the future shouldn't cause a bricked phone?

it should not unless you maybe flash a new app that requires root like flashing fonts have a chance of possible bricks, but if you let them sit at the current rom they are on and becareful with what you download and use you should be fine so i have bricked twice out of my 16+ devices and they are from Flashing the wrong rom.

Before you mess with your device too much, make sure you are comfortable flashing the stock firmware. Some OEMs have a special tool for this or you might have to use something like fastboot. Once you have root, you will probably want to install a custom recovery. Make sure you know how to create and restore a nandroid back up. Most problems can be fixed by restoring a back up and most of the others can be fixed by reflashing the stock firmware.

Custom Recoveries (such as CWM and TWP) can't be installed because of Virgin Mobile locking the bootloader. Sorry :/
I have rooted them which really is all I wanted to do. I just wanted that annoying boot animation off

Recommend top 10 apps after root?

Currently have the engineering bootloader, Rooted, twrp, custom kernel, and the super fast XtreStoLite rom all running fine on my SM-G925F and the Knox fuse is still 0x0.
Questions is what are the best tools/tweaks and root apps I should be using.
Also I'm after a theme manager, something I can create my own custom themes.
Thanks.

Some kind of root browser and titanium backup for sure.

Which custom kernels support system root?

For users uninterested in systemless root, which kernels support the old system root method?
Or is it just a case of installing a kernel after supersu?

Why do you want the old system root? For me there's nothing wrong with the new system less root..

I have some problems with certain apps using systemless. I know it's the future, but right now I'm just interested to know which kernels support system root.

Updating using MM OTA from rooted stock LP ROM

I'm running rooted LP stock with TWRP recovery. My phone downloaded the MM system update. Is it safe to use the automated MM install? I'm not worried about retaining root or custom recovery capabilities.
Thanks
It won't install with the custom recovery. You may as well just install the very latest ROM KDZ with LG UP, and then you'll be all up to date. I believe it's posted in one of the update threads

You will lose root if you use the latest kdz right?

You do lose root and will be completely stock. I haven't read enough of the other threads to know if the latest is actually rootable yet or not.... I've seen conflicting reports. It does appear that you will. hard brick if you try to roll back tho! It's a one way road
