Installing the unnecessary codecs won't fix the issue. It will just occupy your memory that's all.
If anything wrong in HW decoder, it's basically a ROM issue. In Simple words, HW decoder is nothing but android mediaplayer on MX Interface.
Kindly enable HW+ from Settings > Decoder & Play the video in HW+. In some device HW+ may not work. Than try to play the video in SW decoder.

Here's what I've found after enabling Network SW Decoder.
If I first open a stream with MX, it always times out.
If I first open a stream in the stock video player (Samsung), then back out of that and start playing again with MX, it works fine.

I think the issue is with play on.
If there is a network playback issue with MX player, it's not suppose to play even when you tries after backing from the stock player. I have personally using MX player in http & smb (winows share). But, never had issues

Then why does the stock player even work?
It's like MX is having problems with the initial request.

I am not clear about the that.
There could be some other issues like authentication or session codes.
Does any other player works?

Well, I don't have many installed, but an old version of VLC beta will sometimes start the audio stream.
Even that is enough to back out of and use MX just fine (again, on the same video). Very odd.

Well I'm not so sure.
At least VLC completes the request and starts the audio. FWIW I haven't really gotten this VLC version to work on anything.
My thinking is, if it works with the stock video player, it should definitely work with MX pro.
This could be related to one of the known issues that MX has with network playback and (lack of proper) buffering.
Per my List of Bugs thread, it's the top issue on the list:

I know that @bleu8888 is aware of the issue and is working on it, though I'm unsure of his current progress.
There is a issue with network authentication on hw+ and sw decoder.
If it only works with hw decoder, it will be this issue.
Please try hw decoder instead.
This is going to be fixed.

HW decoder always fails "cannot play this video".
SW decoder enabled on network will play only after the video has started in another player, backed out and then reopened in MX.

So, what this suggests is that in HW mode where the hardware handles everything from request to decode, there's no problem; however if HW+ or SW where MX is involved anywhere in the process, then the authentication will fail?
Also, is this specific to any device or android version?
There is missing link in hw+ and sw decdoing in network authentication.
As CDB-Man metioned before, it is under development.

[Q] MX Player Network Stream

Hello,
I hope someone knows a solution for the following.
I am using MX player on my NVIDIA Shield TV.
And I mainly use MX player to play video files that are stored on my network disk.
I am required to use the HW+ mode to get Dolby Atmos audio working.
This is all working fine, the only thing that is not working is fast forwarding and rewinding.
When I am using the same file on a USB stick it works fine, so it seems to be a issue when playing the files with the HW+ decoder over the network.
Does someone know a solution for this ?
I already installed the customer codecs btw.
Thanks in advance !
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51915844&postcount=1
Network playback buffering in general is a known issue, not specific to any of the playback methods. The developer aims to fix it in version 1.8 whenever that's ready.

Sorry for the late reply, I was very busy with some family matters.
I made one mistake in my first post, I was using the normal HW decoder.
The HW+ decoder does fast forward and rewind, but does not give me the dolby Atmos sound I described earlier.
I don't know if this changes the situation or answer ?
I will reproduce the issue and upload the logs when I'm back home from work.
Thanks for all the help !
PS. I already tried the alpha version (1.8.0) of MX Player, but the issue persisted.

HW uses android's native mediaplayer api.
Seems that your system doesn't have native dolby decoders. But, your audio system supports dolby decoding. In HW decoder audio might be passed to audio system. But, in H/W+ it will use system decoders to decode. So, if your device doesn't support that codec, it will use ffmpeg to decode (i.e, SW audio). If you use cutom codec you will get stereo output. Else you won't get any audio.
Only solution is to get audio pass through feature. It's expected in further minor updates to 1.8. (i.e 1.8.x).

Thanks, that is a very good explanation !
I did not really understand the difference between the 3 different decoders, but now I do, so thank you very much for that !
I noticed when I use the native video player on my Shield TV it does play Dolby atmos, but it has the same issue with rewinding/fast forwarding.
So because HW on MX Player uses the native media player API the buffering is not working ?
I suppose I just have to wait till audio passthrough is available in 1.8.
Or buffering will be available in the native media player.

Can collect the bug report & share here.
FYI, now if you disable the subtitle on one video it will be disabled on further playbacks. You have to manually select the subtitle again. Once you select the subtitle it will be enabled everytime till you disable it again.

I cannot remember what video it was, but it was an mkv, when playing a video the subtitles would show even though they were disabled, then if i enabled subtitles i would have two identical sets of subtitles, though one set was a few pixels apart from the other.

Subtitle rendering & Media Playback both are individual functions. It less likely to conflict.
Just downloaded the original video & tested myself. After test & trails I have found that "Improve SSA rendering" option in Settings > Subtitle > Text is somehow affects when using new HW+ decoder for video decoding. Report passed to the developer. Just disable it as a temporary solution till the developer fixes the issue.
Edit: Update from developer
@caspianprince
It's internally fixed & next update will fix the issue with SSA subtitle rendering issue when used with new HW+.

It's not a bug. Android 5.0+ provides a official API to use system decoders in native programming language. When a particular encoding profile is not supported you may still have issues in new HW+ as well.

Audio out of sync with HW decoder.

Hey guys!
When i tried to play any kind of file on H/W decoder the audio gets delayed for like 0.5sec.
When i play the same file on HW+ or SW decoder, it plays just fine...
It is just a noob doubt really, it means that the hardware decoder of my device is broken? Or is just a software issue?
Using Mi5 with MIUI8.
Thx!

Just check it with your stock player. HW decoder uses Android's mediaplayer API. In other words It's MX's wrapper on mediaplayer implementation in your system. So, mostly the audio will be out of sync in Stock Player too.

If it's there only in HW of MX & Stock Player, it's a system issue. Only OEM can fix the issue.
Just stick with HW+ or Alternative HW+ (if you are in 1.8.x). It will give better performance since it's make use of hardware acceleration.

Every parameter of video encoding matters while. Playing. So, behavior may vary from video to video. On certain videos, audio delay is just embedded in metadata to avoid the loss & unnecessary time required for complete re-encoding. There is a possibility that It may be ignored by android's mediaplayer. HW+ & SW may work well in this case.
So, without analyzing the video Can't cinclude the exact issue.
BTW, OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. Xiaomi in your case... [emoji1]

Phone crashes when seeking HEVC

Phone: Google Pixel XL
Android 7.1.1
Stock ROM
MX Player v1.8.10
MX Player Custom Codec installed, HW+ encoding enabled
Ok so here's the thing, when i play a HEVC video (any resolution,8 bit or 10 bit doesnt matter either) it plays fine as long as i dont try to forward/seek. As soon as i do that, my phone crashes and reboots. This happens on HW+, but not on SW. Also, i thought the Pixel had hardware decoding for HEVC but im not able to play the video in HW decoder in MX Player.
Since the phone crashes, i dont think i can gather any logs either. Any help ?

Regarding HW+ crash, it needs logs to be collected from ADB as a system reboot will erase everything. I will ask the developer to check it out as I don't have a pixel device to test it out.
Regarding HW issue, are you playing a HEVC on MKV container..? If it's so, It's an issue which is to be solved by google. HW decoder is wrapper of Android Mediappayer API. On Nexus/Pixel devices Google doesn't implemented HEVC on mkv container. If you just remux it to mp4 (I mean without re-encoding), the video can be played in HW. So, MX Player has nothing to do with HW decoder.

Try again after enabling Alternative HW+.
Based on another report on another thread, It's basically a firmware issue & user has mentioned that leaked Nougat build has fixed the issue. Just be patient till the next system update.
