Upgrade options in 2016 - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What device is next for you and why?
I want quick software updates, fingerprint sensor and good camera. 5X seems to be right choice, but it's not impressive. New HTC is another option.
I also consider buying one of chinese devices (Oneplus, xioami) if they get stable aosp roms. So far HTC seems to be best device around

I am waiting on the rumored 2016 Nexus devices. I am looking for a great camera and wireless charging.

I live in Brazil, theres no upgrade options for my needs here. Just overpriced flagships of the past. If something happens with my n5 will search for a moto just because of aosp support from xda. But probably an old moto x2
I'm a Brazilian without English Course, sorry and be comprehensive

Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA-Developers mobile app

Will Mi5 get full aosp support? Complete camera capabilities and fingerprint reader support?

Im considering device with good camera, fingerprint sensor, with good battery life and also with great community support..
these are my choices:
Redmi Note 3 Pro
ZUK Z2 Pro
ZUK Z1
Honor 5x/GR5

I am waiting for new nexus.

The n5 was the last nexus sold here in brazil, and for a brief time. For some reason nexus 6 wasnt sold here, even with the big success moto have with brazilians. I would consider a Nexus 6 now that google keyboard have the awesome one handed mode

@prog19 Same here, Turkey. Nexus 5 is the last Nexus that sold in Turkey. :/

The One Plus 3 certainly ticks all my boxes. Though very curious if there is going to be a good Nexus 2016.
http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/oneplus-3-1301222

This year I will change phone as well but for now there is nothing interesting...
waiting for:
1) motorola x 2016
2) one plus 3
3) nexus 2016 <-- probably that will be my phone, so I hope will be nice

New Nexus 6, new Nexus 6 and... new Nexus 6 !!!
Still with my N5, hanging with it...screen already replaced a couple of months ago but few days ago the screen start literally to vanish... turn of the device all night long and it was gone... uff I was already thinking what was the cheaper phone with M that I could buy!! My back cover is getting very loose cause when I open my phone to replace the screen I broke some of the internal holders of the back plate. Also no matter what rom I install, no matter what I do with what apps I install, after a few days I only get 1 to 2 hours of SOT... despite these problems, going to hang till the new nexus is going to be announced !!!
Just hope that they don't screw this time with certain aspects. That they release a even better cam like they did with the current nexus line. Also, hope that SD820 (or other) will do a better, but a better job at battery saving!!!

My N5 power button broke and the G2 was cheap at the time so I went for it. I'm in the same boat for an upgrade. All I want is the following:-
-1080p 5.1" screen
-Tiny bezels (Like the G2)
-SD820
-3GB Ram (Minimum)
-Fingerprint reader on back
-3000 Mha battery
-Stock android
-Plastic construction
-$300 to $400 price tag
I cant believe this phone doesn't already exist. Google really messed up with the 5X. :crying:

For me, it'd be either Moto or the new Nexus(es) coming out in fall.

worth upgrading to g2 as of now?

With the G3, oneplus one, nexus 6 all around the corner...is this phone still worth upgrading to? I am currently on the nexus 4 and want to upgrade my phone. The G2 on swappa is ~300 and the oneplus one is going to be around that much too as well as the nexus 6 hopefully. How's the development/support of this phone overall? Is it something that developers and community will stay with or probably jump ship to the next big thing? Thanks for your input.

I have a G2 now, and am using a Oppo Find 7a for testing. And i'll tell you this, in about 4 days i'll be going BACK to the G2; its an amazing phone. The size to screen ratio is untouched. The camera is by far the best in a smartphone. Built in OIS (and not just software OIS) is something that once you see how it works, you'll wonder why more OEM's dont put this in their cameras. LG's version of Android is also very good, however i'll be rooting and flashing a custom ROM once i go back to it. Its honestly still the phone i most recommend to friends and family, you wont be dissapointed at all.
Plus! since its only $300, you know it wont go down too much more in price so you will probably get close to your money back if you decide you want the nexus 6 down the line anyway .

Hi, thanks so much for your input. Is it because the screen of the oppo is too big and the camera is inferior? Also, what rom are you flashing? There aren't too many roms for the g2.

i wouldn't say the camera is 'inferior', its still a very good camera on the 7a; but the G2 is just a little better. And having OIS is awesome. i'm looking at the Sonic Open kang project ROM. from the thread it seems very stable.

Still happy with your Dev Edition or have you moved on?

So what is it? Are you still using and loving your Dev Edition S5 or have you moved on to something else?

Still rocking the Dev. Ed. S5, but honestly this is going to be my last Android on Verizon. I need my Android phones to be open and to get rapid security updates, so my next Android phone will be a Nexus device on Tmobile. I will keep my Verizon line but park, gasp, an iPhone on it.

I went the Nexus 6 route but stuck with Verizon and my unlimited data plan :good:
I'm still on my dev edition but seriously looking at the 2015 nexus 5 from LG (the 6" device from Huwei doesn't interest me, I've got a Note 4 that I don't use because it's too damn big, same issue with the iphone 6+ that's also an option through work). Since the LG will be based on the one of the SD808/810/820 there will probably be a Verizon version available since it's trivial to add VZW support with those chipsets. The other option I'm looking at is the upcoming Sony z4v if they allow unlock of the bootloader, but it will probably have as many issues as the S5 with updates so the Nexus is the frontrunner on that front (the SD card slot, Qi charging, and waterproof construction are pluses for the z4v)
I was wondering since google will release a security system update for android that allows hackers to get to ur phone by texting if I can call sammy tech support and have them upgrade my phone to that updated system and still keep it dev
I'm not on a Dev edition, but this will be my last Samsung phone as many others have said. I'm going to try to get the Nexus 6 2015 as soon as it comes out. Tired of the locked up phone by Verizon and Samsung, and having to debloat every update.

Having a Nexus on Verizon would be open as well... Google wouldn't allow Verizon to lock their phone. And the updates come straight from Google. Notice that there's no segregation in the nexus forum between carriers.

There's no reason for Google to exclude the phone from Verizon, but the last time they made it, only phones purchased from Verizon or the Google Play store could be used on the Verizon network. Not sure if they changed that later.

A few months ago when I bought the 6, the new Nexus devices were a distant thought. I'm not sure the newer ones will be that much of an improvement over the current 6. Although, I did love the fingerprint sensor on the S5 with LastPass enabled!

Ah, a few months ago, I understand. I'm impatiently waiting for the new 6. I never liked Motorola's build quality after bad personal experiences with any of their phones.
The differences are:
2014
6" screen
2k res
13mp camera
3GB ram
Quad Core Snapdragon 805
3220 mAh Li-Po
2015
5.7" screen
2k res (rumored sAmoled display)
21 mp camera
3-4GB ram (probably 4GB)
Octa Core Snapdragon 810 or 820 (Rumor says 820 still has overheat issues)
3500 mAh battery
Aluminum body/fingerprint scanner on back
USB type C (hopefully USB 3.1 as well, or it would be a bit redundant).
I'm mostly looking forward to the new USB 3.1 standard and more ram over the S5. Everything else isn't that interesting. I'm not sure how I'll like the fingerprint scanner being on the back, I'm sure I'll need to get used to that.

Still worth it NOW?

Hello,
I had a Xperia Z1 before and it had some problems so I sent it to Sony just a week ago and they are going to destroy the phone and leave me with nothing (unless i pay, then i get the broken device back) so I'm looking for a new phone just after 3 months :/ The oneplus two seems nice but I don't really want to spend 400 bucks on a phone as i'm only 16 years old and don't have the money for it yet! I can get the 16gb model but my music library is about that size lol! The oneplus one seems nice but I'm not exactly sure if I should buy it or not as I've seen people post stuff about messy touch screens which is a problem I really don't want!
Has this been fixed in recent updates and is this still a good phone to get for 300 bucks(64gb)?
Thanks in advance!

Touchscreen issues have been fixed, only bad thing is that with the latest Android L, the battery isn't so good but it's possible to downgrade to kitkat.

Mentioned touch screen issues were with initial lot.. The new devices don't have any problems..
OPO is well worth the money..
Only advice would be not to upgrade to 5.1 and continue using it on 4.4..for the sake of battery of course.. [emoji56]

Yup, there's no problem with it, I got one bought in January till now and it has no issues at all, no yellow tint or touch problem. Previously I got 1 early China batch one it indeed has yellow tint, but it doesn't as annoying or visible as you think.
Also vote for staying on KK, Lollipop the battery drain like nobody business. (Stock CM12S/CM12.1, Stock Kernel too)
go ahead n buy... no device has comecloser for me in terms of value for money!! no issues left now
hopefully android m will end battery problems as well!!

Alrighty then, the device is 300 euros in Europe and that's a steal! Do you guys happen to know when they will stop selling the one to estimate how much time I have left to buy one?

I don't think they'll stop the sales anytime sooner. The phone is selling a lot even now, after a year of it's release. So take your time.
I'm sorry I didn't see the date of your query, but You will not find a better phone for the money. I won't ask how they managed to refuse to warranty the phone, but that is a shame. Hopefully you can save up some money and get one.
Hi. im also planning to trade my G3 for this device, im worried of my G3 that the crack issue will occur soon so I think of trading it for the 1+1.

Yes its totally worth it. I bought my g3 in January of this year and as days pass by I started hating it. There was barely any development, the battery didn't last long, and it got pretty warm after sometime. I trade it for a one plus one and I'm not regretting it whatsoever I mean it doesn't have the fancy features like the g3 but the only thing I used on my g3 was the radio sometimes and rarely the ir blaster.

Its still a decent device, although I'm keeping an eye on the ZUK Z1 which has been announced for international release to day (available October), with Cyanogen OS. Its basically shares many of the same internal hardware with the OPO, but has some additional features like OIS, dual SIM, finger print scanner, USB Type C, bigger battery, (arguably) nicer build materials.

Oh, they're also working on a ZUK 2 for January! Featuring the Snapdragon 820..

I sold my 64gb One Plus One (only had it for a few months, got it after the invite system went away) to fund a One Plus Two but ultimately decided to get a Mi Note instead. Love it; far happier than I was with the One. The One had ghost touches, yellowing screen, crap and a half camera (who cares about 4K if HD and FHD still look bad) and horrible onboard sound quality. The Mi is fantastic. Giant LCD (I'm 6'6" so this is a plus), OIS camera, best audio DAC I've ever hear on a phone. And I really like MIUI. One Plus MIUI is broken.
The only downside is shipping from China, but mine arrived no problem (15 days, most of those spent in some sort of customs). 16GB are roughly the same, 64GB Mi Note is cheaper than comparable OP2.
Answer to your title: No! You can find better devices with the same money.

But overall I satisfy this phone. (especially I am a flashaholic user.)

I heard that band issue can be fixed by using it in the sun or putting it under some UV light, so if I have it I'll try that
To be honest, I'd take the Moto x Style or Moto x Play. With the new style center from Motorola and the 20 mp camera on the Play edition, it really stands out and may even be better then the 1+2.

The 32GB model has recent sale average price of $171 on Swappa... I was asking $200 with 3 cases (2 never used, sealed).
Guys, I'm considering buying this phone after almost 2 years with Mot X 2014. My question is "how xda friendly is Moto X 2015?" Unlocking bootloader and flashing ROMs on Moto X 2014 was piece of a cake.
I'm on custom Android 7 based ROM now, performance is great and the only issue for me is storage. 16 Gb isn't sufficient.
Manually flashing custom Oreo ROM eventually on Moto X 2015 would be something I expect to do later next year... if I decide to buy it.
Muito Xt1575 not arrieved the 7.0 yet, the 8 only in dreams.
Android 8 custom roms is real future for moto pure ?
LoL i might buy new OnePlus 5 (soecial edition) which will be officially announced by next week
hope to see more Banger features in it

Nougat is still a little buggy for this device. Have no idea if it ever gets unofficial Oreo. Also, it's just a little old. Don't get me wrong, I'm using this phone, but if you want to buy another device, choose different model... from different company.

I'm on custom Android 7 based ROM now, performance is great and the only issue for me is storage. 16 Gb isn't sufficient.
Manually flashing custom Oreo ROM eventually on Moto X 2015 would be something I expect to do later next year... if I decide to buy it.

Noooo don't do it! D: What's your budget? There are better phones with better specs out there.

Unlocking the bootloader and flashing AICP nougat 7.1.2 was a piece of cake on my MXP, it supports unlocking the bootloader out of the box.

Honestly... Don't bother with a 2 year old device. If you like Moto, go Moto G5 Plus or G5S Plus, 3-4 times the battery life, equal performance, support for probably the next 18 months or so, etc. Or if your budget allows, go with something better, there are lots of options.
I would not buy another Pure, even if I could get a new one for under $100.

Yes, it's all about budget. I can't see right now things I need in a phone for 200 euro:
- nearly stock android
- amoled screen
- SD card support
- and I hate what Lenovo creates now under Moto logo.
Looks like I will need to resign myself to some the points above
----
Guys, thanks for the comments!

Well there's the Lenovo P2. LOL But it's hard to find phones with AMOLED screens at that price point. I was gonna say just go with the Mi A1 (LCD) when it comes down in price later this year because it's the best stock Android bargain you'll find. Why do you want OLED so bad anyway? The Moto X Style isn't OLED, but it's screen and colours are highly saturated, even for me. I think this is something most IPS panels can accomplish with the right settings. I have to say, though, the Moto's screen is really good for an IPS panel.

I was actually considering Mi A1 as a great option.
I love how OLED works with ambient display on my device. Experience of receiving notifications and unlocking the screen is addictive. When I see how my wife clicks power button each time on her Huawei P9, it looks like something from the past century

New Phone ?!!

Hi,
The Oneplus One was a great phone, it's been almost 4 years but it's the end, I broke it, the screen and the camera ... broken, the screen isn't responding anymore, the frame all around is in bad shape too .... I took care of it, there was no scratch, but i broke it at work trying to fix desk -_-
First of all I want to thanks the xda Oneplus One community, it's been fun ... Cyanogen 4.4 KitKat to Android Oreo 8.1 Always someone to help, with developers who do their utmost to give us the best :good: .
I'm actually using my old Nexus 4 for now but i'm thinking to buy the Xiaomi Redmi 5 plus.
Do you guys have a suggestion for a new phone that I can buy ??? (The Oneplus Five is too expensive for me unfortunately )
PS: English is not my native language, sorry for any spelling mistakes
PS: Just realized i'm in the wrong section -_- should be in "ONE Q&A, HELP & TROUBLESHOOTING", Sorry about that
hi,
i had a oneplus one too until recently, i got a xiaomi mi a1. i can recommend it!
Hello,
I have the oneplus one from 4 year old too and it work perfectly (never change any parts).
I think change for the new oneplus six, but seriously I don't need more, the one is good for me.
Big thanks to the xda community, for developers, this smartphone survive a long time.
I've considered changing too, but I finally decided to keep my one a couple of years more (if possible). This said, right now I would pick Redmi 5 Plus in the lower tier, Nokia 7 Plus in the middle one or LG v30 as top device at a good price.
Good luck with your choice, but keep in mind nothing will actually replace your One. It was like the girl of your like ??
Budget phone definitely Xiaomi Mi A1
I would recommend Xiaomi mi6 or if you can wait for mi7 (This would be my choises if my bacon got rotten)

Both the parts(screen and camera) are available on eBay. Replace yourself and bring your OPO back to life. Anyway, going for Redmi Note 5(3gb variant) or Redmi Note 5 Pro would be a better choice than Redmi 5 Plus. The former one costs just a little over Redmi 5 Plus.
I'm quite interested in MiA1 or maybe Nokia 6 2018
I'm still using my OPO sinc oct 2014, even if i dropped it in the water( only the front camera broke, even after changing it iti didnt get fixed, maybe it's something else like the connector or a resistance ...) and i was planning to change it for the 1+6 but after seeing it will have a notch i changed my mind and i hope my opo will survive another 2 years lool because sincerly it's a beast, if i compare it to phones from the same year( Z2, S5, M8) it's the only one who is still working perfectly and smoothly( i see my friends whith the phones i'vve mentionned strugling lol), thanks to this incredibly community, so i hope i don't brake it or get stolen or brake itself for another 2 years, but for you what can i say, cant' you for exemple find a used 3T?? it's a very good phone even if it's not the new one
The great thing about Oneplus One has been the developer community which has been keeping the phone after so many years.
Does any current phone has such a developer community?
Xiaomi note 5 pro is a good budget phone with good camera.Heard Mi A2 is expected to launch next month but has a less battery and may not have support of Google.
Essential phone has been on sale in various countries.. check it out.
I would highly suggest Nokia phones otherwise.. budget + fastest updates after Google pixel series of course.

Nokia would have been a very good choice only if they allowed unlocking bootloader and released kernel sources of all their devices.
Source - https://www.xda-developers.com/hmd-global-kernel-sources-bootloader-unlocking/
They released kernel sources for a few devices but still no official way to unlock bootloader.
