Anybody do a factory reset after the last update and notice any improvements? My browser is a touch laggy, as is my UI, and I was thinking of doing the reset just for kicks. However, it's a pain to reinstall, and I'm not rooted (and don't want to mess with it), so I'll lose my game progress.
Suggestions? Thanks!

i did a factory reset and lost all personal data but kept the updates. you question is a bit vague, do you mind elaboraing?

Sorry. I mean, simply: is it worth doing the reset? Did it make a marked improvement in performance? I only want to go through the hassle if it's worth doing...
I've found that sometimes it is worth it following some updates, sometimes it's not.
I did a factory reset after some time with the update, and found absolutely no difference compairing it to before.
So, if you are planing on doing a reset expecting improved performance, don't waste your time.
Regards.
Since I updated my Nexus S (i9020a to be exact) to ICS 4.0.4, my phone has been randomly rebooting like everyday! I did manually update it but I got stock Android and also I am unrooted not have my bootloader unlocked. Why is this happening so frequently? Should I factory reset my phone?

I also had a spontaneous reboot a couple of days after I updated to 4.0.4.
It's only been four days total, so I'll be keeping an eye on it.

nope... didn't get it there...
maybe you should wipe your cache and dalvik-cache... and don't forget to fix permissions...

The thing is I'm not rooted and it seems that factory resetting actually did a job cuz no reboot so far... I'll update forum if this method works...

Personally I've had several occurences of random reboots and actually at the phone lock into a reboot loop till I pulled the battery.
I think the issue is RAM management. The Nexus S doesn't have as much RAM as most tablets and it's younger sister the Galaxy Nexus. Something in how the OS decides which of the background services should be terminated and cached under heavy RAM load seems to be part of the problem.
For example, I seem to have improved my phone stability by removing apps that update in the background and don't need to (UAL, I'm looking at you ) and disabling background updates in other applications (TripIt, PodKicker Pro, etc) to prevent them from leaving background services running. That seems to have helped in my case.

wipe data may solve this issue.
I have been running Pete's Bugless Beast which has both the ROM and Kernel updated to 4.0.4. Never had a random reboot.
I doubt it is a memory issue. When my phone doesn't have a foreground app open it usually has 130 MB ~ 150 MB free. I never see it go below 100 MB.

Exactly when is it powercycling?
Is it when running a certain app? When plugged in? When on standby? When you set it down or bump it?
There a number of different reasons the phone could be powercycling.
If it's while running a certain app or completely at random while you're not using it, unprevoked, first try hard resetting it. That will resolve the majority of issues.
If it's when you set it down or it's bumped, it's an issue with the battery making contact. Remove your battery, clean the contacts gently with a pencil eraser, make sure the contacts are clean and free from pocket lint on the phone itself and reinsert the battery.
If it's still doing it after a reset, it could be your processor. The best way I've found to test your processor is to max it out. You can do this by running a benchmark app over and over while everything on your phone is running. I personally use "Neocore" (available in the Play Store). Turn on your bluetooth, wifi, max your screen brightness, gps, every battery sucking processor running setting available. Run Neocore as 'Interactive Mode'. If you run that for an hour without powercycling, your processor is good. If it powercycles, you have a bad processor and should have your phone replaced through Samsung warranty.
Best of luck to you!
Random reboot
My phone is rebooting at least 15 times a day !
It is very random : during a phone call/installing an app/unlock the phone/writing with keyboard/phone is idle...
Applications are also often not responding...
I did a factory reset/wipe data several times but it didnt change anything.
Phone :Nexus S i9023
Carrier : unlocked ( HK )
OS/build number : Android 4.04/IMM76D
A really big amount of people posted the same issue on google mobile forum. ( i can't post link yet as it is my first post ) title "Random reboot of nexus with Android 4" ( please google it ) , but nobody mentionned anything with CPU. Could it be really that many people having a default CPU ?
After my last post, no reboots for while but now reboots are back with increasing frequency.
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
I don't usually like resurrect a really old thread, but after a road trip where my Nexus S randomly rebooted 4-5 times while running Podkicker Pro and Maps Navigation I went and reset my device to factory defaults. The next day I had the phone reboot in the middle of a podcast. Today it rebooted halfway through the first ring when I received a call.
Seems to be, at least in my case, that the reboots are related to mp3 audio.
This lead me to find this bug logged against the galaxy nexus: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22669
It doesn't provide an answer, but it does provide some insight. I think personally I might look at different ringtone formats and see if converting my custom ringtone to something other than MP3 will help, but I'm not optimistic.
Hey all,
While my phone has been absolutely fantastic in just about every aspect, the only issue is that anytime I try and play a game on it, it will freeze and I have to completely close the game out and restart it. Do any of my fellow redditors have any suggestions as to what may be causing this or how to fix it? Or are any of you experiencing this as well.
I have yet to experience this and I have been playing a lot of games. What games are causing this? Also, redditors? This is XDA.
Sorry about the redditors thing, they suggested here and i forgot i put that in there. The two that i know of are Temple Run and Baseball '12
I've put a good few hours into Temple Run and haven't even had a single stutter. Haven't played Baseball '12. I dunno what to tell you. It *shouldn't* matter but how much free RAM do you have before playing the games? Have you tried killing everything (again, you *shouldn't* have to do this) before playing?
I have gone through task manager and killed everything possible several times. Doesn't clear it up. Do you think it might be something with the phone and should return it for another???
killing those apps actually makes things worse. Leave things as they are.

How would freeing up RAM make things worse? I get that Android is supposed to have very good memory management but it has been more than proven that the One X is not your typical Android phone in this regard. Its memory management flat out sucks.
I can also confirm no stutter on Temple Run. Good luck.

I was trying to avoid that but i may just have to do that tomorrow after saving all my contacts. Will update after attempting this to see if it fixes it.
while we are on the subject, I too have been playing a lot of games with no real problems except for GTA III. At first everything was working excellent except the sound would crackle in the menus and occasionally in the game. After a while however with all display settings at max, the game would start randomly stuttering and slowing down So I lowered the settings some which helped, but it still does it about 10% of the time. Tried reboots several times and doesnt seem to fix anything.
Everything else works wonderfully and I think I remembered someone posting something about GTA III running perfectly at full display settings. Wonder if maybe I need to somehow re-install. Also it seems like there are a lot of people who have odd ball issues with programs not running correctly while everyone else seems to be fine. Wonder if there could be some defect with the phone, maybe its occasionally corrupting parts of files when installing. IDK just thinking out loud.
GTA III I have problems with the game too. there is something wrong with the phone memory management. My SGII could handle this game with no problems.

Anyone experiencing Tegra games crashing on tf300? I tried ME, demolition, and dark meadow, somehow they all work after boot but if you use the tablet for a while then the game starts to crash. Demolition wont even get into game.(game loads but doesntget into stage where you have to stamp. It just shows white screen)
I have been trying to get the game working without reboot but doesn't work. I have tried clear dalvik cache, disable most Asus apps, developer option to limit background process to 1, enable disable various apps and functions but none seems to work. I know the games work for sure because if I reboot they all work perfectly... all regular games and apps work great all the time.. its only those thd games....
Any expert please share your opinion and experience ...

Hi, got the same problem here and its not only tegra games, its done it for me with EA and gameloft games too. I am still experimenting but it looks like I can get them to work stable after using the program fast reboot, download it from the market and see how you go.
But this is just a workaround, there must be an app that is either conflicting with these games or is corrupting memory in some way after it is run.

Same as you, haven't had any crashes on tegra games, but have had them in EA and Gameloft, sometimes gameloft games just freezes the display but the sound keeps playing I can even control the actions in game I just can't see them. Reboot always fixes them.

Exactly! The screen-freezing issue has happened to me in EA Gameloft and Tegra games. Glad to hear its not just my device that is defective(?)

My guess is that for EA and Gameloft games we will have to wait for an update, since they just updated their list of compatible devices and didn't update the game version.
Think we might need an actual update from Asus, because alot of games have the same problem so looks like it is a bug in the system not the games themselves.
Will continue to look into it and maybe find the app that is causing the problem.

All tegra games were also crashing for me, but a factory reset fix the issue.
Sounds very much like this issue that currently is plaguing the Transformer Prime.
After much analysis, I determined it to be related to some type of cache-coherency issue with running ARMv7 code. Very likely the same problem affects the 300T.
Same probs here with Tegara and gameloft

Hi,
Do you mean after factory reset everything is fixed (not need to reboot anymore) or it still only works right after factory reset (crash comes back after using tablet for a while)?

Hi.
Folowing this post because my TF300T (.29, no root) has been having problems with several games.
After reading this i did a cold boot and haven't had any problems since. (No factory reset needed)
Has anyone had a similar experience?
Why is this?

I don't have a TF300T, so I can't confirm; however, the Transformer Prime seems to have some type of instability (perhaps caused by a cache-coherency issue) when running code compiled for the newer ARMv7 instruction set and hitting high cpu/memory loads. Since the TF300T is likely using similar (if not the same) base OS, the problem is likely affecting the TF300T as well. This would also explain why users are mostly seeing this problem on games optimized for the Tegra 2/3 processors, since those are the very games that will be using the new ARMv7 instructions.
OK so I've had my Asus TF300T for 2 Days now n when ever I play a game that's high graphics they seem to crash n the screen flickers
So far games that are crashing are
GTA 3
Riptide GP
Heroes Call THD
Shadowgun THD
I really cba to download n pay for more games just to see em crash
Could it be the stock Rom ?
Been hearing bad optimization with the stock Rom and a lot of people have been unhappy with it
Would I be best contacting Asus or the place I bought it from
Or would rooting and installing a Custom Rom
be better ?

So its a common issue, most people are saying its a software issue not hardware and in that case I'll wait for a way to root my TF300T
Without having to unlock it, at least then i can unroot and have full warranty back

i have been playing shadowgun and Dead trigger for the past month...quite a bit actually....and just in the last couple days i have noticed it starting to studder/freeze/crash on me....the only way i am able to play it is by dropping the graphics down to low or regular. not a huge deal since the "tegra 3" optimized graphics are a little cheesy to me.
Try using ram manager pro and set it to hard gaming haven't had a freeze since then. Before I used to do cold boot before playing to prevent freezes. So yeah it's a software problem.

to do a cold boot: turn your tablet off, press and hold the power AND the volume DOWN button until it powers on, you'll see something like "wipe" and an Android icon/picture, with some text on top, DO NOT touch or press anything, after about 10 seconds it will show something like "cold booting..." (i don't remember the exact words), just leave it there and it will boot like normally. -> basically you turn your tablet off, press and hold the power button AND the volume DOWN then it will show whatever images/text just ignore them and it will boot normally, the process happens very fast.
also i think this is for this tablet only, not for every android devices,
and i'm new to tablet too so correct me if i'm wrong
but i have this issue too, it doesn't always happen to me but sometimes it happens it just keeps crashing like that for the whole day, then the next day it's ok, maybe a software issue, i already started a thread before you lol http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828685
