LG G5 Official Mesh Folio Quick Cover case (LG-CFV-160) thoughts and experiences - LG G5 Accessories

Thought I'd start a discussion thread covering just the LG G5 official mesh folio Quick Cover case (LG-CFV-160). So far, I've only seen generic reviews regarding the case and not much long term experience, thoughts etc.
Here goes (warning, I'm not an English major!).. I am a fan of folio cases, especially OEM folio cases that provide additional useful functionality. The trend was for top end phones from Samsung, LG, etc with removable batteries, there was often optional flip cover that also replaced the rear battery door, typically to include contacts on the flip cover rear door that would enable additional features on the phone. Flip sensing, QI wireless charging, etc.
The flip covers can be annoying when taking photos, etc, but practical for:
1. Protects screens. Some folks in the family aren't as careful and just toss their phones in bags, not considering what other contents might be there that could scratch the screen.
2. Accessibility - either built in or with third party software, the flip action can be useful to simply usage for the non savvy family members. Like the good ole flip phone days, open to answer, close to end.
3. Lastly, with a simple cut out on one side, standard gel TPU bumper cases could be used with flip covers that also replaced rear battery doors since they general dimensions of the phone remains the same.
Now, specifically regarding the official LG G5 Quick Cover case. My feelings? Costly, but I like it. Although it clips on the rear of the phone it is extremely light weight and has a premium feel. It is nice to be able to have an always on status and be able to answer calls without opening the flip cover.
LG G5 Quick Cover Cons
1. The premium smooth plastic is nice but is easily scratched
2. Slippery (subjective). I prefer pleather / gel case feel, that helps it stay on a surface. Work around is to add a couple strips of vinyl / electric tape on the rear. Going to see if I can modify a bumper cases to fit the LG G5 with Quick Cover.
3. Darn flip cover doesn't like to stay down, maybe it just needs to be worn in.
4. Covers the volume buttons, and no outlines when closed, you just need to feel for it. Awkward to use the volume buttons when cover is partly open, you need to fully flip the cover back.
5. The LG G5 Quick Cover only works with the original bottom and will not work with friends module. Would of been nice if the figured a way to just attach a screen cover to either side, maybe a magnet, who knows. Maybe that's patented. Might have to switch phones if Microsoft ever releases a Surface Phone with a Touch / Type Cover!
6. When cover is fully flipped back, it covers the camera! Means you need to dangle the cover halfway open to take photos. I suspect there's a cut out on the Quick Cover to allow access to the power button - which it does, except for maybe a 10th of the bottom of the power button. The cut out really should have been larger so the entire power button and camera is well completely available when the cover is fully flipped back.
The official LG G5 Quick Cover is nice, but probably worth buying / trying only on sale or discounted.
*** To case makers *** There's opportunity here to make a better Quick Cover! I would definitely buy either:
1. An improved Quick Cover which addresses the above issues.
2. A bumper case compatible with LG G5's quick cover.

How to grip LG G5 with Quick Cover when using Camera
Got around to showing the folks their new LG G5 phones with Quick Cover case - mother's day was good timing!
While trying to figure how to best grip the phone with the Quick Cover, found while holding the phone in landscape with the flip cover dangling down, it was actually fairly comfortable to loop one or two bottom fingers (pinky and ring) through the cover's cut out. This had the added value of making the phone very secure in hand. :good:

Agree with you in all.
I prefer cover than bumpers or case: screen might be protected.
And agree with the cut of the window, who hide the back's buttons (sensor and photo)
Looking for a cover like official, with bigger window

I ordered a LG G5 Quick Case for $10 from China, advertised as OEM. Upon arrival I realized what I should have known, it is not the official OEM. The quality is acceptable as far as fit and materials, but my phone increases battery consumption dramatically. Battery consumption returs to normal as long as the screen cover is open, which defeats its purpose. Has anybody noticed this behavior, or it's just a badly designed copy of the Official Quick Cover Case?

I was going to buy one my concern is that the side of the phone is not covered, I like to have the phone protected all around.

The case grips (grasps) the phone on the four corners. A quality plastic. It's not a soft bumper case, nor a thick durable case, but the way the corners are it should prevent damage from sides if falls flat on its side, back, front at waist / chest level.
What's awesome about the G5 is the easy reparability.

I've got the same issue. I bought an original LG OEM Quick Cover Case, and until I've been using it my battery drains much faster. About 10% per hour in Idle. I think that the reason of it is an active front surface of this case, mabye it's continiously waiting for reaction (touch the surface or open case). Any solution?

I can also confirm battery drain issues on OEM folio flip case. It's really annoying.

I can confirm that the OEM flip cover case is very slippery. I nearly dropped it a few times because of this.
The fact that the front cover doesn't stay closed with some kind of magnet or suction cup is annoying.
I tried modifying an older case I had which had the suction method to work on this case but it wouldn't work without completely destroying this case (superglue ew :silly
As for the battery drain issue, I haven't used the device without the cover in the past couple days that I've had the phone, so a few more tests will show what the difference is with and without it.
I haven't had trouble using the camera since I flip the cover in such a way so that I can use the window as a way to hold the phone steady when recording.

UPDATE: [Drop Tested + Review] Case-Mate - Barely There

Review:
The HTC Desire HD is a great phone in every way except for the only Achilles' heel, also known as the battery cover. That piece of flimsy plastic that HTC calls a cover is known to break easily, slide off accidentally, not of the same material to that lovely metal body.
Ive always used cases for my HTC Desire HD to cover that battery cover, having tried about 5 different types, I have to conclude that I disliked the TPU because of the flex on the sides which could potentially trap dust and other crap that might be the pocket (the Momax TPU case has been the best so far that I have used), I had a look at a couple of the snap on cases, most of the ones on Ebay are cheap and ****, I am the sort of careful user, never dropped my phones, I dont run about in the rain or take my phone on hikes but an aesthetic freak.
I recently purchased the Case-Mate Barely There HTC Desire HD case for a fair bit of money, I have to admit, its not the cheapest case, but for those who want the quality feel without feeling up that battery cover, this is the case for you. The overall quality is sublime, the plastic mold edges are smooth without any imperfections, coating over the case is of excellent, even and thick to feel like a quality product. The fit the good, as it was design specifically for the HTC Desire HD, good clearance of the volume buttons as well as for the headphone jack. Overall, Ill highly recommend this product to all that is keen for that high quality feel of a snap on case...I didnt manage to find any decent photos to show the product in detail before purchase so for it, Ill say I was lucky, so for those that may be interested, Ill let the photos do the justice.
Drop Test:
It has been a few months since I have got my own Case-Mate - Barely There, whilst the other day at McDonalds, I accidentally knocked my HTC Desire HD from the table onto the ground. The fall was more than 1 metres and onto some relatively harsh and hard surface aka concrete tiles.
At first I thought I screwed up big time. As I picked it up, I realised the phone was still switched on, luckily it fell back first so there were no scratches or imperfections to the front of the HTC, I suspect this might be due to the camera shaped mound that enforced a flat surface for the fall. The case had several scratches around all corners of the case, with several scratches and dot shaped imperfections on the base of the case. The scratches inflicted due to this drop can only be best described as if someone had key'ed your car sort of scratches.
After further analysis, the is no fault with the phone, everything works as before but the case did scratch, barely anything as I had considered a much more harsh damage. There was no structural damage to the case only relative aesthetics. The case does live up as a protection to our HTCs. Refer to the photos once again and thanks for reading.

The small dots are not dust particles but very small dents and scratches
Relative scratches due to intial contact of the fall, you can barely see the black plastic of the base material, indicates a decent level of paint.
Another imperfection on the top right corner of the case, very similar to the photo as above.
Nice summary, I have one too, though I'm now using the Case Mate Tough...
I don't know just how much you use the GPS, but do check out your reception with & without the case.

fyi, the GPS antenna is in the flash module.
There are another couple of threads here on this issue, specifically with the silver finish case - the good news is that Case-Mate are responding responsibly to consumers' complaints.
I have the barely there case n bought it when I got my DHD n never looked back. True it was a fair bit o money but I have to say it has a great feel to it n suites all my needs that a case can do. Highly recommended.

Got this case today due to this thread. Absolutely love it. Cheers
I have the case and I love it, went through some tough times (falling out of my pocket in a club, into a puddle of beer and being stepped on after that) and the phone is fine! One thing I have noticed. The corners of my phone are rubbed off as if the fit isnt perfect and some of the paint has come off!
It looks really elegant.
I´ve used this case with my HD2. A big problem was, to remove it when you have to exchange the sd card or the battery. It has got scratches at the edges. Have you tried this...think about flashing... Also i fear, that the battery cover can break, when the case has to be removed...What is your experience?

Typically I am not one who takes my case off, I havent done so since I got the case about 2 weeks now, so basically I dont have any issues. With regards to the battery cover, the actual case is very flexible so flex the case rather than the phone, other than that, I dont think that it will break the battery cover, as I mentioned, I hate the DHD battery cover.
Have been using this case since I got the phone over 6 months ago. Would never buy anything else, does it's job very well and most importantly it is very discrete, people are often shocked when they look at my phone to discover it actually has a case on.
I've had a barely there case on my Desire and now on my Desire HD. I've tried a lot of cases and you CANNOT get better than this case. It makes the phone feel so much better and keeps my antenna case firmly locked on
Coupled with a pouch it is fantastic and still fits in charges, car docks, etc.
This case looks very nice. I like the metallic look.

Just for you to know, its actuall of very high quality, feels very thick layer yet even. Whilst the actual case itself is not metal the actual coating consists an actual harder clear layer. Ive absolutely used it intensely for a few weeks now, just cleaned it, I cannot find any obvious scratch marks. I am very impressed. It does smudge a little with any oily or grubby fingers but what is gloss and doesnt?

I used to have a pouch for my HTC Desire, similar to that of the Nexus One. But the hassle was the fact that both your hands would be occupied at anyone time in the operating of the phone, having to take it out and putting it back. Yes, that in fact offered the best possible protection because only the bottom of the phone where the USB connection side of the phone was exposed.
The HTC Desire HD is already as big as phones will get in my opinion, so idealistically lets not make something BIG any BIGGER than it has to be, so I ditched the plans for pouches and went for basically slim and/or TPU cases, essentially becoming an integral part of the phone, also as I mentioned before to cover that hideous battery sim/SD/battery covers.
With the protection of the existing case, I also have it paired with a good matte screen protector, so as the photos in my original post will show, very little of the actual phone is exposed, once again where the USB connection side of the phone was exposed but this cannot be avoided.
So I mean, I guess an out of 10 Ill say a good 8~8.5? though keep in mind I am a bloody mean **** when it comes to things like this...so yea. =D
I have the matt black version of this case and love it.....
Prior to buying the CM Barely there i had the Otterbox Commuter case which was just made the phone much too big for my liking! As well as making it too big it also made the volume rocker and power button extremely difficult to operate. The CM barely there though, the buttons are all easy to get to and use, and as the name suggests, hardly adds anything to the size of the phone. Granted it may not be protective enough for those that are rough on they're phones, but if your like me and take care of stuff anyway then it will be just the ticket for protecting it from scratches and general knocks.
I have the silver mirror version of this case (same as op) and while very nice and sleek, it completely blocks GPS signal. No big issue for me since i have a dedicated unit in the car for navigation but still something to consider. i dont think this is an issue with other colors of this case though, although i love the silver finish too much to switch it for a different one.
As for the person saying the edges on their phone were scratched.. I havent noticed any wear and tear on my edges and I consistently remove the case for sim changes and battery pulls on bad flashes. Keeping index finger on top edge of the phone and thumb on the bottom edge, prying the edge of the case off from the top left by pulling it away (case seems slightly bendable) and lifting the phone out seems to be the most gentle way to remove it.
I had the Pdair luxury silicone case. It was a good case I felt that it protected my phone really well. The thing was that it was a real pain to get the phone in and out of my pocket. I bought the barely there case about two weeks ago and I'm very happy with it. this one is highly recommended...unless you play fetch with your dog with your HD
Just noticed this review, thanks OP!
I'd like to add my two cents, I have the matte black version of the barely there as well and unfortunately I was not so pleased with the fit. Luckily as I have the matte black version I was able to trim it down to suit my needs. The areas that needed trimming were around the volume keys, I cut off the bar that ran across the top/face of the keys. Now I can actually adjust the volume without having to cram my finger in the slot. Also I noticed pressing the power button at the top was a little difficult as well so I trimmed the entire top piece running behind the power button and now both the volume and power buttons can be pressed with ease but don't get pressed accidentally. After cutting I buffed it down with some fine grit SP and it still looks stock. I used the included barely there screen protector which already has a few nicks and scratches but overall has done the job of protecting my precious DHD. One more mention, the OP said she doesn't like getting dirt behind the case, this case lets in a bunch of dust and dirt, I take the case off maybe once a week and just clean off the back of the phone, but because the case has a bit of space between the case and the phone, nothing gets scratched. Great case overall as everyone else states, just needed a bit of adjusting. I attached a pic so you can see my handy work on the case.
I have one of these cases also,Very happy with it.
this case really has a quality feel, and i'm quite pleased i spent the money on it. couple of complaints though: the volume button is harder to use when the case is on, and the case is difficult to take off.
Take mine off when i place it im my charging dock at night,Forgot to put in on the other morning....DHD felt naked without it.........lol

Poetic Slimline Case w/ Pics [First Impression]

I just got the Poetic Slimline in the mail yesterday and thought I'd post my first impressions
I ordered off of Amazon for ~$10 USD shipped.

First off I think this is a VERY attractive case:

Some features:
Magnetic Wake Sleep
Microfiber lined cover and back
Cut-outs for all buttons, ports, and S-Pen
Cover doubles as a stand
So the case isn't exactly packed with features like a hand strap or an extra pocket for memory cards or a larger pen, no cutout for the speaker on the front for international models but it is very thin, and that's exactly what I wanted.
The outside is a fake leather but it doesn't feel very cheap, we'll see how long it holds up though. One thing that is nice though is the tolerances are very good, and the cover fits very nicely with the snap on case. Another nice thing is that the magnet also holds the cover on the backside so it doesn't flop around with the case open.
I'll try and update later if I encounter any issues but so far I think it is a very attractive and slim case, especially for the price
Thanks for your review. I have the same case for my Int'l 3G+WiFi Note 8.0 and agree. It's a very nice case.
The three negatives for me are:
1. No opening or hole in the cover for the phone earpiece speaker.
2. The main microphone hole that is next to the S-pen silo on the 3G model is just barely covered by the plastic of the case. I took a small jeweler's file and filed it down so it no longer covers the microphone. It's only covered by about 1mm.
3. I'm going to remove the SLEEP/WAKE MAGNET in the cover to prevent a Digitizer Dead Zone on the screen! See the posts in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2249587&page=3
I'll use an app that uses the proximity and/or light sensor to do Wake/Sleep functions.
Otherwise, I really like this case.

I'll be curious to hear what app you end up using for that. There are a few mentioned in the following post, but it sounds like one of them doesn't actually lock the tablet:

This device doesn't have a proximity sensor, so you will need to find an app for the light sensor. I haven't found them to work very well, but be sure to share your experience if you find a good one.

Interesting, the thread you linked only mentioned issues with the note ii but didn't go into detail. Is this permanent damage that occurs over time? Like will there be a problem even after I take off the case? Right now with the case on, I can use the S-Pen at every point on the screen, I checked using sketchbook there might be a 1 mm sliver on the side of the screen where the magnet is, but if that's all there is its not a deal breaker for me. However, if this becomes a permanent and/or larger "dead zone" I might consider another case.
EDIT:
My lovely artwork showing the dead zone

I can't speak with any certainty to the permanence question, but it seems like from your very helpful illustration that what you're seeing is the effect of the magnetic field along the middle of the right side, which does illustrate that having too strong of a magnet near the screen while trying to use it is problematic (which makes sense given that Wacom technology involves electromagnetic fields).
Per this post the location of the sensor for the wake/sleep magnet is towards the left. In theory, it should be fine to use a magnet there (assuming it isn't too strong) given that Samsung has build the device with a sensor for that purpose. But I'm just speculating.
I know im drawing away from the topic but assuming that the magnet does cause damage, would it still have the same effect if it were not on the screen? After much searching, I located that the magnet on my Moko shell is actually on the left bevel and doesn't even touch the screen itself..I'm hoping it doesn't effect my s-pen

That is a good point (regarding straying from the original topic): It seems like there is a lot of good and important discussion happening (and perhaps forthcoming) regarding magnet concerns (between the current thread and some other places linked above). Does it seem worth starting a separate thread (and linking there from here)? Just a thought (not a criticism or anything).

Does it hold well with the case open? Is there a lot of overlap/awkwardness holding it in your hand when it's open?
I just got the Note 8 hoping to use it both at home and at the office. Previously on my Tab I'd used a non-book TPU case at home (where I typically use my tablet most) and then swapped it out for a book-style case for work/travel. I'm hoping to find a case that might allow the best of both worlds and this one seems the thinnest/closest to that.

No there isn't much overlap with the cover open. It can wiggle up and down a little, but thats only if I move it intentionally. Generally it stays put

I'd forgotten about Poetic (have a couple of their cases for my Nexus 4 and iphone 5) and this looks about as nice if not nicer than the stock Samsung case/cover... and at $40 less! I initially bought a no-name "slimline" type case from Amazon (5 or 6 bucks) when I first got my GN8, but it was so crappy my N8 would actually fall out of it.... at the time there wasn't anything else but the generic folio type cases, which I hate. So I caved and got the $50 Sammy case, but now, I'm returning it to Bbuy and getting this Poetic if it comes in black!

Regarding the Poetic Slimline Case, Yes, I removed the magnet in the flip cover by using a sharp Xacto knife and cut a ~7mm "+" over the center of the magnet. I used a paper clip to find the exact position of the 5mm round magnet. I made my cut on the inside of the cover flap (microfiber side).
This part of the cover has a thin metal panel the full vertical length of the flap, so you don't have to worry about cutting through the front of the cover if you are careful. You can pry the little magnet off of the metal panel with the point of the Xacto knife. It is secured by a small amount of soft glue, like rubber contact cement.
After the magnet was removed, I lifted the microfiber cloth gently with the curved end of a paper clip and put a small dab of crazy glue on the metal panel in the center of the opening. Then just pressed the microfiber cloth down with my finger for a few seconds until it bonded and dried. I can barely tell that it was ever cut. Just don't use too much glue or it may absorb into the microfiber and create a hard spot that would scratch the screen. For that reason, it may be better to use rubber contact cement or another soft glue.
I did not remove the thin magnetic strip in the edge of the molded case that is next to the IR Blaster. It is far enough away from the screen to not affect it, and this magnet helps to keep the cover flap closed, though it is VERY weak and doesn't hold it very securely.
The folding cover flap also does not stay folded very well when you use it to prop up the tablet in either position. It will easily flop open unless you are very careful. The rubber feet on the edge of the Official Samsung Book Cover Case work well in this regard to keep the base of the tablet from sliding back as you press the touchscreen, at least on hard/smooth surfaces like a desk or table. However, they don't help much on any surface that rubber will not "stick" to.
I would actually rather have a kickstand case like the Case-Mate iPOP! for the i9100 Galaxy S II. It worked at just one angle, but worked in both horizontal (landscape) and vertical (portrait) positions.
And I don't really miss not having the automatic wake on/off function. It would be nice, but until there is more concrete evidence regarding the magnet affecting the digitizer, I'm going to play it safe. I purchased the 3G/phone version so it was quite a bit more of an investment compared to the WiFi only model. For now, I'm just pressing the power button on the side. It takes a very light press to activate. I haven't even bothered to install an app that uses the proximity sensor for this, like Screen Standby # Root.
Hope this helps.

Thanks again for a very helpful post. It sounds a bit daunting but I do need a very slim protection and just something to cover the screen when not being used... Wish all these manufacturers changed the magnets to just something else.

No problem. So far the Official Samsung Book Cover Case is the slimmest and lightest of the cases that I've tried, besides a simple TPU case with no screen cover. Also, since it is the Official OEM Samsung case, they *should* provide warranty service for the Note 8.0 if the magnet does cause any problems with the screen.

I recommend you consider the STM Cape. It's really not bad at all in terms of extra bulk and it provides some nice protection (and there's no magnets!).

Otterbox Defender Case for the 10.5

Hi guys I just want to share my experience with this case, first of all it's brilliant. Surprisingly light and no where near bulky, the weight doesn't seem to bother me as if it feels like a normal tablet even when I carry it around because this tablet is light, so is the case. Unfortunately I don't have a video to demonstrate it but I plan on doing so in the future till I get a camcorder. For $90 on Amazon this case is a must if you bring your tablet out with you because I do, I have the LTE version and this case is compatible with both 800 and the 805. I feel that this tablet is so light naked and even if you get other cases and if it falls, the protection is just sub par and that will still risk it's safety. I recommend this case to secure your investment on such a great device. The feel is really good and smooth, the back feels great and grippy, not slippery at all. I love the shield stand that helps protect the tablet too and acts as a stand with 4 different angles to position it from. For the record it's so easy to install the case, just follow the guide, it's just light and not tedious at all to put it on and removing it. The only issue I have with this case is that on the upper left corner on the tab on landscape orientation it's creeky, I'm not sure if it's just this unit case or if I didn't install it right but I have removed it for more than 3 times then put it back in to secure it. And over time if you're laying down and holding the tablet, the sides can wear you off ofcourse but not in a major way but that's it. The power button and the volume rocker have a incredible feel and response, actually better than the device naked itself, the ports aren't a drag, charging while using it isn't a issue, the flaps can be a challenge at first to get used to but once you get a hang of sticking in the charging port then you're good to go. I haven't dropped my tablet yet ever, I hope I won't so I can't tell you how effective this is but hey it's a otterbox defender case, it should be the best out there for defense. I had a clear screen protector prior to getting this case, knowing this has a built in screen protector, I didn't remove my original one and tried it on and I didn't like the response, it felt delayed a bit and wasn't that comfortable so I removed it and it's perfect. Overall I love this case, totally worth it and is the only viable case for me, if you bring your tablet out and use it, I suggest you go for this, and also it looks fantastic. People won't recognize this as a tablet or what cause of the case, unless they know this case. A thin premium tablet deserves this case and needs it, I feel like if I drop this naked or with a case with mediocre protection this tablet will break due to its thin form factor. Unfortunately I don't have any picture of the case on my device because I have no phone or camera so I only have pictures of the case itself alone. I haven't seen anyone talk about this case nor post any video regarding it so I hope this helps anyone out there that wants to decide on getting a case and gain some insight. If you have any more questions please feel free to ask and share your experience if you too have this case. I have forgot to mention that also this isn't waterproof, but dust resistant and the case protects itself from scratches but haven't tested scratching at all as I don't want to

Ive had a griffin survivor case on my Ipad mini 2 and accidently dropped from the top of my locker because something got stuck and it fell all the way down to the floor. Glad there is a otterbox case for the tab s. Watching movies on this hurts my hands as the edges are really thing. Had my tab s in july and only dropped it on my blanket on the floor. But defender cases are a must need for me but I only use this tablet at home or when going to a friends house.
looks good mate, just a quick question can you still attach the Bluetooth keyboard with it?
and where did you buy it?
I'm not sure but most likely you can't attach one, you're gonna have to remove the case but it also depends. Since it's a Bluetooth keyboard correct me if I'm wrong, the Bluetooth range alone should suffice unless the keyboard needs to attach itself to the tablet. It was a gift from my girlfriend, she bought it from Amazon online.

Has anyone tried removing the Otterbox screen protector and using a screen protector applied directly to the tablet such as iSmooth or amFilm? I did that with my S4 and like it much better.

Since Samsung has sensitive touch(where you can increase touch sensitivity) the otter box protector should be fine with a bit more protection.

@jimchagaers I took mine off soon as I bought it. Lol!
I wouldn't recommend removing the built in screen protector and what I've heard with others that have done so, it kinda dented the surface of the screen to the case which isn't good and honestly for me it's so much better with it. I don't feel any difficulty using, it's actually better with the built in screen protector. It doesn't feel less sensitive as I've removed mine several times with it so I know.

Glad I found this thread. It was mention in an earlier post about denting the screen. I'm not certain the built in screen protector is what dented someones screen but I do believe the kick-stand inside the top cover could easily ruin the screen if it ever got pressed inward. I hadn't planned on doing this until this was mention but I decided to remove the kick-stand. It pulls out easily. I then used a dremel to file down all the remaining clips. Using the cover as a kick-stand is a great idea but not at the expense of the screen. Especially when the cover is superpose to protect the tablet and does the opposite. In the past I had a laptop screen marred by the keyboard when the two were pressed together. I now keep a pad between them when traveling.
I went to Amazon and read through some of the negative comments about this Otterbox. It was mention more than once that the built-in screen protector had some type of oily substance that ruined folks amoled screen. I noticed this oily look when the screen was off. Couldn't see it while working on the tablet so didn't think much about it until I read the reviews. They called it a "rainbow effect."
I removed the built-in screen protector and used amFilm Screen Protector I found on Amazon. Totally invisible if applied correctly and a nice feel. I have used iSmooth in the past on my S4 that I really like but they did not have it for the Tab S.
Not glamorous but more practical.

That's a interesting finding, I haven't noticed anything wrong with my case and my tablet at all, I have removed it many times and put it back on. I don't know how the kickstand can dent your tablet if pressed inwards because first of all its a hard Shell so it wouldn't really dent unless something really heavy bumps into it. As for the built in screen protector, I haven't noticed an oily look when the screen is off, it could be just the screen protector but it doesn't affect the tablets amoled screen literally when you remove the case. I like the built in screen protector and it feels good on the tablet.

Also put one of these on my Tab S.
Also ripped out that crappy built-in screen protector -- the Newton ring look was completely ruining the display. Put a decent screen protector back on it and it's fine.
So far so good...

When you ripped out the built-in screen protector how did you get rid of the sticky glue that holds it in. I got the case but my tab is in the mail and I want to get this ready to go.
Thanks
Never mind, I got a product called GooBeGone and it worked great. Now is USPS would just deliver the tab.
Doh. Sorry I was out of the country and couldn't get internet access.
As for me... when I pulled off the built-in screen protector, the glue got left behind, like you said.
But I was able to just scrape up a corner of the glue and rip it all off in one long strip. Goo Gone would have worked well too as you suggest.
How do you like your new tab, if it's arrived yet? I found TouchWiz to be absolutely horrible and despite my preference to not trip Knox, I ended up with CM11 and it is like night and day. A completely different device.
Dou's this otterbox block or interfere with the ir blaster in anyway?
No it doesn't block the IR blaster since there's a cut out for it, it's all functional and good, accessible ports and all and is much better compared to other cases.

It doesn't block IR blaster at all. However, it blocks the microsd slot completely, which is not a big deal for me. Another issue I had with this case is that you wouldn't be able to use a OTG cable at all. The thickness on the charging port wouldn't allow you to plug OTG cable onto it. Luckily, I am only using this case heavy duty protection such as traveling.

I'm personally not a fan of an all rubber outside. So I found this and it works great. Like with the otterbox, I would suggest removing the built in screen as it has a terrible oil slick thing going on. Plus I love white, which the otterbox doesn't offer or didn't at the time I ordered this. Oh and its a third of the cost.

Review of the Roocase Glacier Tough Case for the Galaxy Tab S 10.5

I received this case as part of their evaluation program. Here's what I think of it.
Packaging: I liked the packaging. You could see the case well and the back of it had the usage instructions so I would be able to see what I was getting. I liked that it was easy to open (not a clam shell) and resulted in a minimum amount of trash.
Initial impression: I like the color. The texture of the case felt nice and it looks and feels sturdy.
Installation: Installation was simple. It did not require excessive force to snap on like some cases. It fits the tablet well with all the cut outs lined up and well sized. I noticed there is no cut out for the SD card slot. It does not bother me since I never remove my SD, but it might bother someone who does.
Protection: From the look of it I would say it provides good protection. I like that the sides are protected unlike the Samsung cover I was using. I do have a damaged corner due to a drop while using the Samsung cover. I would be confident this cover would have prevented that. The only thing that concerns me is that the front cover does not hold closed very well. If you hold the tablet with the front cover facing down it very easily comes open. I would be worried it would pop open on a fall and leave the screen unprotected.
Usage: The open positions are easy to use and the tablet stays securely propped. My only question is why have position 2 and 3 hold the tablet at identical angles? (position numbers are the order they are listed on the back cover) I would like it if one of the positions held it at more of a 45 degree angle. The Samsung case has a position like that and it is very convenient for usage on the lap.
Removal: This case is very hard to remove. In fact I popped out the glass of the tabled from the frame a few times while I was trying to get this case off. I finally got it off by starting in the corner near the headphone jack port.
Other: The cover leaves a somewhat distracting hexagon pattern on the screen, but it is easily wiped off. The back cover is a bit slick. If set on a slanted surface the tablet slides off. I have to remember to put it face down. I am also seeing finger/hand prints easily on the back.
Overall this is a very nice case with just a few areas that could be improved. For the price it is a great choice.

Hi nicholb,
Thank you for your review and feedback. After reading through, we noticed you mentioned that there are finger/hand prints that are showing on the back of the case. Were these easily removed, or a bit more troublesome to get off?
Please let us know, so we can look into this.
The fingerprints on the back do easily wipe off with a cloth.
I've got one of these Roocases last year and yes they're very rugged however the trade off is the weight of the case which is 288 grams.
I've been using my tab in doors at home but I'm now going to be more mobile so I'm going to have to look at another case that's lighter yeah I know it'll be more at risk but it's just too heavy when holding for long periods.
I might try this one as it's 200g lighter:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/SAMAR®-Supr...r=8-7&keywords=samsung+galaxy+tab+s+10.5+case
So here is my review after using this product for a couple weeks.
First Impression
The case came packaged nicely with an easy to open plastic cover. Being able to see the majority of the case itself rather than just a box is a plus in my eyes.
Design
I love the design of this case and the origami concept for the top cover. The only issue I really have is the top cover seems a bit too light and flexible. The OEM case has a consistently sturdy feeling across all of it's pieces. This cover also overhangs the edges just a bit when closed.
Protection
I have dropped my tablet both intentionally and unintentionally with this case on and it survived without even a scratch. The body of the case is very sturdy and solid with a nice feel to it. The OEM case sucked at being protective and often times the tablet would fly out of it. The mounting tabs for the OEM solution seem to get looser each time I remove and reattach the case, so that left a lot to be desired. This case however is an extremely solid fit. The OP stated he had an issue with it being tough to remove (to the point of almost damaging the tablet), but I didn't have that issue. It was in there pretty tight but removal wasn't difficult.
Usage
I've been using this case for at least 2 weeks so far and it has not disappointed me as yet. The viewing angles work for my uses and the sturdy nature of the case instilled confidence when using it in the garage.
Final Thoughts
I love the color combination I received and the feel/ texture of this case. The top could be a little stiffer so it wouldn't feel like it's just flopping around, but that's just my nitpicking. If I had to pay for this case I definitely would, as it serves my purposes very well.
Here is the link to the case I received. Photos will be uploaded later.

I can see why the cover seems flimsy, so it can fold to hold the tablet in the different positions. Maybe in a update the company can make the cover a little thicker. To the OP & munnarg, you did not say whether or not if the cover had a magnet to turn off the screen when closed. I have been looking at this case for a replacement for my Samsung half(?) cover that came with the tablet.
Yeah it does turn the screen off when the lid gets about halfway closed.

Just a follow up now that I have been using the case a month. I have decided not to go back to the Samsung cover for two main reasons. First this case provides much better protection. I had one drop from waist high with the Samsung case and cracked the corner of the tablet's frame. This case encloses the edges and provides better protection. Second I like the looks and color of this case better.
My only minor quibbles with the case are that I wish it had a ~45 degree angle. Where I use the tablet that angle works well for me. I also would like for the back to be a little less slick. I have to be careful to set the tablet face down on slanted surfaces or it slides off. You would not think that would come up often, but two of the places I routinely set my tablet happen to be slanted.
Overall a good case and I'll probably use it for the life of the tablet.
Received mine few days ago, love it but it's so damn hard to remove, popped the glass off the frame like nicholb explained, learnt the hard way to remove it. It also blocks the sdcard port, I have no idea why so the first thing I did after removing it was snipped it off with a pair of pliers and then smooth it down with a knife, the port now available, still a bit tough to access the card inside cuz the case edge is thick, but it is better than before =]
I had my first minor drop last night with the case on. I had the tablet on the arm of the couch open with the case in position 3 (the one where the cover is pinched together). When I sat down I bumped the tablet and it fell to the ground landing screen down with the cover open. After steeling myself to look at it fearing the worst, I found no damage. The case did its job and protected the tablet.

[Review] Rhinoshield Crash Guard and Screen Protector

Introduction
Today I'll be reviewing the Rhinoshield Crash Guard bumper case and the Rhinoshield Screen Protector. I've never used a Rhinoshield product before now but I've always heard positive things about their range. I've been using these products for two weeks. I've been supplied these products for free in return for my review.
Crash Guard
The packaging for this product is quite good, it features bold colours and a quality card box, it looks and feels very nice. There's a slim vertical window on the box that reveals one edge of the case inside.
This case is a smooth TPU-like rubber that wraps only around the edges of the phone (open front and open back). It's a bit more slippery in the hand than I'd like but not so much that I'm dropping the phone. The case is raised up on both the front and the back, meaning that when you place it on a surface (either face up or face down) only the case is touching that surface, the actual phone doesn't make contact at all. This provides a good level of protection from scratches from rough surfaces. All in all, it feels ok in the hand. The edges on this case aren't rounded/curved, they're quite hard and angular, making it uncomfortable to hold, especially at the rear where you naturally rest your fingers.
Installing the case is relatively easy but it does take a decent amount of force to get the last corner or two snapped on completely. With all the hype about this device bending relatively easily, I must admit that the force I was applying to get the case on worried me. Anyway, the corners fit quite tightly once you have it on. The sides of the case are pretty floppy, though, you can very easily pull the side of the case away from the phone about 10mm. It might be because of this fact that the power and volume buttons on the right side of the phone require significantly more force to push than without a case installed. Using those buttons is cumbersome and is a downfall of this case. In saying this, the level of protection that's provided might be worth the fussing caused by the buttons.
I'm not going to deliberately drop my device but my assumption is that it will offer a good amount of protection. Tapping the phone against a hard surface with a good amount of force, you can feel the impact vibrate and disperse through the case. The Rhinoshield website claims that this case is rated to protect from at least an 11 foot (3.35 metre) drop. Their convincing product test videos can be found here:
https://www.youtube.com/shared?ci=AKC213nMRN4
https://www.youtube.com/shared?ci=7Qk23X9eVrU
There are plenty of other independent test videos on YouTube that support the 11 foot drop protection claim.
At first I was going to write a fairly negative review because the buttons are so difficult to push. I don't know whether the case has softened up a little since first installing it or whether I've gotten used to the buttons, but they don't seem to bother me as much anymore. I've used other cases that are far easier to install/remove but actually fit to the device much better and don't make the buttons difficult at all to use. All in all though, I've decided to keep this case on my phone because I believe the protection it offers is worth the negative aspects about this case.
Pros:
Excellent scratch protection via the case being raised away from the phone.
Sturdy design and it feels like it offers good drop protection.
Nice matte colour and finish.
Cons:
Buttons are difficult to press with this case installed.
Floppy/loose sides.
Uncomfortable to hold.

Screen Protector
Like the Crash Guard, the packaging for this screen protector is very good. It comes in the same bold colour scheme and quality card box. In the package you receive one micro-fiber cloth, two fine dust/fluff removal stickers, one hard squeegee, one screen protector, and one protector for the back of the phone.
The installation process is pretty easy. The first step is to clean the screen well with the micro-fiber cloth, then you use one of the stickers to dab all over the screen in order to remove any trace of foreign material before applying the protector. Applying the protector is straight-forward, you line it up, let it "grab" at one end and slowly allow the protector to roll up the screen, clinging as it goes. You can then use the hard squeegee to flatten/push out any bubbles that may have appeared during the installation. All up the whole process only took me a few minutes and I had the the protector applied virtually perfectly on the first try. This does require a pretty steady hand and a good eye though.
The protector feels very good once on the phone. I'm pretty sure it is of a plastic resin construction but it certainly has a glass-like feel to it. It's also crystal clear and doesn't hamper touch response at all. There are cutouts for each speaker, one for the front camera, and (like all good screen protectors for this phone) a small cutout (coming off the top speaker cutout) for the proximity sensor. It fits to the screen perfectly and causes no issues with the Rhinoshield Crash Guard case or my other Spigen case. The oleophobic coating doesn't do much to prevent it becoming dirty from fingerprints unfortunately, it gets just as dirty and just as quickly as the digitizer does without a protector applied.
I'm not about to drop a weighted bearing on my phone to test the strength of this protector but you can find some decent product test videos (produced by Rhinoshield) here.

As someone that has had this bumper on a 6P for a year, the buttons get softer over time.
Also, I have no issues removing it. If you follow their instructions about pulling one corner away from the phone, and pushing the corner up with your fingers and the rim of the case down with your thumbs, its pretty easy. I start with the lower corner away from the button side.
I've had the bumper on and off more times than I can recall and no damage to the phone.
Been using a Rhinoshield since release for the 6P, best case I've ever owned hands down!
I am really contemplating getting one of these but I am such a case whore it's ridiculous. I have a Gold 6P right now, what colour do you guys recommend for anyone that owns the Gold one?

Thanks for the feedback. Turns out I was just going about it wrong. It is actually quite easy to remove as you suggest so I've edited those sections out of the review.

My pleasure. Other than the R/R comment, I thought your review was both accurate and comprehensive.
When I first got mine, pressing power twice with my left index finger to trigger the camera was quite difficult (usually had to use my right thumb). Now, it is very easy. Buttons are still firm but very positive (you can feel the click).
BTW, my preferred method for installing is to put the side with the buttons in first; insuring it is fully seated. Then pop in the top left corner, followed by the bottom left.
With all the cases I have tried over the years with various different phones, I find these products remarkable. Fit and finish is as good as I have seen, and protection is Otterbox Defender like, without all the bulk.

Looked into it and they don't. Black, blue, red, and white are the only colors I've seen for it. Really.... No other colors!!! Kind of lame.
They videos looks amazing. Too bad it is so ugly. lol.
Looks and Feels great, just got mine today.
I prefer this case to my spigen ultra hybrid crystal clear case, which gets greasy and smudgy after a while. It gives a good grip on the sides without having to actually touch the phone. Very good value for money.

The Rhino Shield adds a little more bulk.
I have this case, but since it doesn't offer much protection for the back, I use the SupCase most of the time.
