Hi, I am waiting for my HTC Sensation to arrive from eBay. New to android and have been reading about rooting. Just want to make sure I am getting this clear:
So, to root, I'll need to to the S-off thing with revolution, then clockwork recovery, then SU to actually root it right?
I am not sure whether I need to root it, but I am interested in unlocking it for SIM and I read there's a way to do it if the phone is rooted. Also, I probably don't need some of the T-mobile apps and want to delete it. However, do I have necessarily have to flash a custom ROM after I rooted it? Can I just use what came with the HTC?
However, if I do this, I guess I can't update through HTC/T-mobile anymore right? So I'll have to flash some ROM, but does it have some modify ROM, or can I use the ROM that's official from HTC?
Can someone please correct me if I misunderstood the process? And also, can I reverse all this if I decide I just want to use it the way it was shipped except simunlocked, and be able to update newer version of the OS from HTC.

I was just like you about a month and half ago. im new to android aslo but i'll help you. first- your right about using the revolutionary method and installing clockwork and super user. as for unlocking it for a SIM you might need super cid check this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300

As for roms im using stock but it's rooted. but before you root please update to 2.3.4 because it really improve your phone but yes you would have to flash update roms after you root. but you can find the official one's here if you look for them as soon as they come out.
pretty much yes to your questions...even if you root you can stay with your stock rom and just use titanium backup to delete all the junk u dont want. Also, even if you cant get updates officially, devs here are nice enuf to post the newest stock roms for you to flash so dont worry. so i suggest you read these three threads to start off and have fun (just read directions very carefully)

Thanks for the quick reply. So I can only remove some t-mobile apps if it's rooted right? I was thinking of updating to the newest version before considering rooting. I think I will be kinda in the same situation as you....so when you say stock rooted rom...it's basically the same ROM as what t-mobile has with SENSE etc...but can be apply to a rooted phone without losing root right?
Finally, since you're not using any custom ROM and stuff... do u find it worthwhile rooting? what other advantage have you notice if you're using the stock ROM?

My rom is the same one that comes when you first get the phone. the only expectation is that it's updated to 2.3.4 instead of 2.3.3 and that it's rooted. When you root imagine like it's a window's pc and instead of using the guest account where stuff is limited, your now able to use the administrator account which lets you do anything.
As for advantages, i wanted to improve it's speed and battery life. the update helps but you'll find out that tmobile has alot of apps running in the background which slows it down and uses more battery and they also included useless app or two of the same kind of app. Right now im looking at other roms because im kinda tired of sense but i wish i could keep it's widgets.

Great. I think I'll just stick with the 2.3.4 firmware for now before considering flashing any custom ROMs etc.
So just so I am clear, I should update the unrooted phone to 2.3.4 when I get it. then I can perform the S-off, clockwork, superuser to get it rooted and just leave it as it is and use the existing ROM as it came with the phone. Until I need to update to a higher version, I will then flash a rooted version of whatever t-mobile came out with from here. Is that the deal?
Finally, what's superCID? Do I need that?

Yep your correct....
As for super CID is something like a carrier unlock. This has something to do with updates i think. but by adding this you can flash any carrier's rom onto your phone. for example vodafone and orange are both 2 different europe phone companies and they both include different apps on their roms just like tmobile give there special apps. With super-CID you can put anyone of those carries rom on you phone regardless if it's a europe, usa, or asia sensation. but you don't need- i haven't put it on either.

1. You could, but the ota could include some security changes or something making it hard to achieve root again. Easiest to just flash a pre rooted ROM that includes the updates
2. Yes that would work, but why not create a backup after root instead?
3. Tb can backup contacts, but the file might not be compatible with newer roms due to software changes. I just let google keep mine, that way the ROM doesn't matter
4. by radio we mean the software that is connecting your phone to the mobile network using the physical radio. Sometimes newer version can be more effective, and some are region specific. Between the radio and the ROM is the ril (radio interface layer), which helps the two interact. The kernel is the layer of software that directly controls the hardware of the phone (battery drain, cpu frequency and governor, all that stuff). rarely is changing any of that stuff necessary, but some of us just want to tweak everything we can

As for the backup...yeah.. so if I perform a NAND now..it would be a rooted version of the ROM right? And it'll have all the contacts as well?

I meant when an update comes along, instead of all the effort of UN rooting, updating, and re rooting, just wait for a dev to post a ROM with the update cooked in. Much easier, less work = less risk of a problem.

Just got a Sensation this last Sat, my first Android phone, and am interested in rooting it. Never done this on any phone and am a little confused as many guides are for people who want to flash roms. For now, I would just like to root in order to get rid of some preinstalled apps. Is there a guide that has the minimal steps needed to just root? Also, does rooting do anything to my settings or apps that are there now?

Ok, didn't quite understand the guide here but found a video that made it easy and now I'm rooted. Will this keep me from receiving updates? When I get updates will this unroot the phone? Also, which apps are safe to remove without messing anything up?

Hello and welcome to the forums.
To property receive OTA updates you need a stock recovery - that's a must! We cannot predict what HTC is going to update next so if you delete a package that is going to be updated - yeah, this may cause troubles. So deleting kinda anything as root may cause a OTA update to fail. I suggest that you buy a application that does a backup when uninstalling a package. I'm using Root Uninstaller Pro to "freeze" some apps just in case HTC releases a OTA that needs one of those disabled apps.

If you are running the stock ROM you can just update OTA right? I'm not running a stock ROM so i dont have any OTA at all, but just curious...
I'm running stock rom, nothing changed except it's rooted. Are you saying I won't get any OTA updates from HTC? Would I get them if I took the phone in to a T-Mobile store, say when ICS is released or would it still not update because it's rooted?

to find your answer boot into recovery on your phone, if you see it orange or blue with lots of options and on top it says CWM custom recovery, then no you will not receive OTA's, but to be honest thats ok, usually we root users get OTA leaks before its even released, expamle ICS some one is already working on ICS port so we will see ICS before even official release is even out
and if your rooted i found best way to remove bloat is to use titanium backup
back up the apps you want to remove in there and from the same app there is an option to uninstall it
Ok, got TB. Is there a list somwhere of apps that are safe to remove from the sensation? Also, when ICS is released, will putting it on my phone myself erase anything I currently have or not work at all if I start removing apps? Sorry for all the questions, this is my first smartphone.

I'm considering rooting my international One S for a couple of things. Mainly, it's to overclock the CPU but I also want to try and fix an annoying problem during booting with the phone. The problem is that my phone is locked to Vodafone via a contract, thus the Vodafone icon appears and no startup sound is heard like I was used to with my Desire S.
I'm aware that rooting/overclocking can be dangerous but as long as I follow the rules carefully, I should be fine. I'm not a noob with technology but rather a noob in terms of rooting Android.
That brings me to this thread. I just wanted to ask a few questions before I tried it as it is still under contract until 2014. I hope I don't confuse anyone but here they are:
If I decide to root, will I lose any data? (contacts, music, videos, photos, apps, etc.)
Can rooting be 'undone'?
If I root, will my phone still have HTC Sense and Android 4.0 as before?
Can I still receive OEM updates with a rooted phone?
I don't want to modify anything other than the core frequency of the MSM8260A processor so I'm hoping things like CyanogenMod aren't required.

1. No you not lose what is on your SDCard, but when you unlock the bootloader, it will wipe your device/settings.
2. Yes.
3. Yes, unless you install a custom ROM to remove them.
4. No. You will need to unroot and relock the bootloader or update through a custom rom.

No, Rooting wont delete data, But Unlocking bootloader will.

Yes, You will only lose these if you flash a non HTC ROM, Like AOSP, AOKP, CM9, MIUI ect

No you dont have to flash a custom ROM for root, Just unlock bootloader and flash the superboot image in fastboot.
And yes, You will need to flash the stock recovery (if you replace it) to get OTA updates

If you are rooting to OC only--I am OC'd and don't notice any perceptible speed difference.
However, once rooted, you may get the flash bug and not turn back--
OC'n really isn't going to do much aside from boost your benchmarks, drain your battery more, and add a slight boost to some games. Not really worth it imo.
Dude trust me u want to flash a custom Rom I was a bit weary about it at the start I went from a Nokia 5530 to this I didn't want to mess it up but rooting is the best thing I'm using leedroid and love it u will make mistakes I did too but u got fantastic developers and people on here to help u out just download ur ruu and if anything goes wrong flash it and ur good always make nandroid back ups at the end of the day ur call but ur missing out

I'm merely wanting to root it to prove points to some One X and Galaxy S III holders. 'Overclocking' the CPU to 1.70GHz will hopefully prove that Tegra 3 is useless unless you are gaming. It isn't really an overclock considering the CPU specifications over at Qualcomm provide this as its highest core frequency. Overclocking would be going beyond this - i.e. 1.80GHz.
Apologize in advance if this is intuitively obvious to other but after searching and reading a better part of the day, I can't figure it out...
In any case...I rooted my 4.1.2 phone a while back with the casual root. Didn't unlock the bootloader or install a custom recovery, just rooted. So that puts busybox and supersu on my phone. Later on, I installed a custom sound thing to get some decent volume out of this thing.
Now I tried taking the OTA and it failed. I thought it would just wipe out the root stuff and be on it's merry way (like other devices I've had in the past). So, I used the one touch unroot in SuperSu and tried again. Still failed. And it still showed me busybox in the app drawer.
So, here's my question...
Do I need to remove my custom volume thing as well as do the unroot?
And do I need to uninstall busybox before doing the unroot via supersu? Or do i just go to the apps and install it there after the SuperSu unroot?
And, if none of those work right, do I fall back to flashing 4.1.2 directly - or maybe better to flash 4.3 directly? I plan on using saferoot once I'm up to 4.3.
If anyone can help me sort this out, I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm rerooted for the moment.

OTA will look for any rooted app and fail so you best bet is just Odin the full 4.3 then root with saferoot. This is you also have a nice clean install.

Sorry but flashing the full firmware will wipe everything bring it back to factory stock phone, so you need to backup all your stuff.
Well, just to share with everyone, I did not flash back to stock. For a number of reasons, that wasn't really an option.
My first step was removing viper4android. That actually got rid of the "custom" screen with the open lock on boot.
Then I uninstalled busybox from within itself. Unfortunately, as noted elsewhere, that leaves several hundred symlinks in xbin, so I removed all of those (I was only left with dexdump and su there). After that, I actually uninstalled busybox via the app manager.
Then I used the unroot option in supersu to clean up the rest and remove it.
At this point, I should be completely unrooted, but still got the 402 error when failing to upgrade with the OTA.
So...I plugged the phone in and ran the software upgrade assistant that shows up on the "CD" that presents itself from the phone when you plug it in to USB to the computer. And, actually, that successfully completed the upgrade to 4.3!
Haven't embarked on re-rooting yet (using saferoot) but that's the plan at least.
