MicroSD. Which one to buy? - Galaxy S 4 Accessories

I bought a 64Gb MicroSD for little money. It is not brand, but when I copy large amounts of files from the PC (ie music), then when I put it on the phone, the music disappears. This problem can be given by the poor quality of MicroSD? What do you recommend? A MicroSD Samsung Evo may be okay?

I have made (and still have) good experiences with Samsung, Toshiba and Transcend cards. Rather bad (or mixed) experiences with SanDisk cards. I wouldn't say that SanDisk cards are in general of bad quality - my guess is that there are many fake SanDisk cards on the market.
Currently I'm using a 128 GB Samsung Evo card.

Kingston may also be a good option. Using my 32GB Class 10 for well over a year now. Granted, I do not copy much between a PC and the card, but I do move a lot of stuff between the internal storage and the sd card.

Was using a sadisk 16gb card, and now a lexar 32 GB card. Virtually no difference, besides storage space. I find it unnecessary to buy an expensive cardz when I've never had a single problem with the cheaper brands, and not the "top of the line" cards like the overpriced Samsung cards.
Really, go with any brand. I see a lot of articles about certain cards having problems with the s4, but you gotta understand, those are isolated incidences, and the other thousands of people that don't have problems with their SD card and this phone don't go online to complain about them.

As for your particular problem, might be a problem with the connection between your phone and the PC, and not the SD card.
You should buy a different brand, and see if it does the same thing.

The Real SPEED of S4 !!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm a pro of microSD and Galaxy S4.
Hear that :
Galaxy S4 can only read and write on external microSD card at 21,7 Mo/s max !!!!!
So buying a Sandisk Ultra (read : 45, write : 13) would not be a good choice according to me...
You should buy a Sandisk Extreme (read : 90, write : 45), to enjoy a bit more speed, for 3$ more expensive...

I had a bad experience with Lexar ( same for this guy -> https://youtu.be/aO-imP0qTQY
At the moment I'm using samsung EVO+ 128gb and its perfect got it for around 30$US from a store (Best Buy)

SD Cards recommended (and not)
Mostly any BRAND SD cards are recommended. Which ones you ask? Lexar, Kingston, Adata, SAMSUNG. It's going to be sad if you buy a Generic or Off-Brand one. Why? Well, they don't always come with their real capacity (claiming to be 8GB, and they're really 4GB or 2GB), they're REALLY delicate or unreliable, and some are known to not work AT ALL out of box. So yeah, there's the best, VERY-IN-DEPTH guide the world has ever seen. Maybe.

I would recommend KIngston at any form

Got a 32Gb Samsung EVO microsd with my S4 3 years ago - it lasted about 6 months before it packed up. What a bunch of crap from Samsung.
Currently using a cheap old class 4 sandisk 16Gb (which was inherited from my old Blackberry 9300 (from back in the day ) now for the past 2 years or so without hassle - smooth sailing! And the sdcard is probably 4/5 years old now!
Moral of the story: Fastest/most expensive/<insert brand name> IS NOT ALWAYS the most reliable/best way to go.

I always use either SanDisk or Samsung EVO/EVO+, never had issues with either.

So what you're saying is that even though the phone can only read @ 21 mb/s MAX, buying a card that has 90 mb/s read speeds somehow makes it faster?

Yes, S4 is limited at 20Mo/s in read and 20Mo/s in write,
so no benefits at all with a sdcard with 90Mo/s in read,
but 40Mo/s instead of 10Mo/s is a very big benefits(10->2X faster !!!)
So I have bought a 200GB Lexar 633x (90, 40) at 120$, and it works like a charm on my S4 !

How much did you pay for it? I find Samsung to be over priced. Got me a lexar microSD card at a cheaper price, and no complaints.
I think brand name SD cards are overrated, IMO. Some of them get bad reviews, and say how they mess up badly after a while, but I think that's just a case of rare instances, or got a defected model. Never had a problem with the cheaper brands, ever.

16 GB joyflash class 10 speed test

Hi Guys,
just got a new "16 gb class 10 joyflash micro sd' off of ebay for £18
I used h2test 1.4 with a micro sd adapter to test the speed with the test reading and writing 1GB of data
The test yielded results of 15.5 MB/s write and 16.8 MB/s read.
Are these the sort of results that I should be expecting and should they be good enough for me to use a data2ext etc rom?
Thanks
those speeds look good compared to what ive seen quoted for class 6. i think i'll buy the same as you, good value if its not fake!
I've done a complete test with h2testw and the card is indeed the full 16 GB (minus the space taken up by the fat)
I've also done this test with another card of the same type, from the same seller on ebay, that I bought for a friend and it achieved 15 MB/s write and 18.2 MB/s read. Might have to do a cheeky swap :L
any chance you can post up the item number please?
is it 110661046754 ?
yeh that's the item number of the one i got

Ive just done the same. I use A2SD at the mo because i have a standard 8 gb class 4 i think...... crap!! Video recording lags like you said and also transferring albums takes its time too so cant wait to start using D2W
Thanks for your sharing dude!!
No problem guys
Thing is I was reading everywhere, "get this one", "or those ones are rubbish",
Was a bit confused, so kind of just took the leap and was pretty pleased with the speed test results, and the card didn't have a fake size or anything and the price was pretty cheap. Can't argue with that tbh
Im running cyanogenmod 7 rc3 atm, so it's not essentiall I have a fast sd card as the resived hboot partition table gives you loads of space.
Can't wait for a fully working gingerbread rom with sense.
Should be interesting to see what version of sense that htc give the desire gingerbread rom when it's released. Whether it'll be new, or the same one that shipped with froyo? I hope it new. But if it's not there will probably be a good desire hd port etc up in no time (then i'll need an ext partition :L)
This was the best thing I've ever bought... check my quadrant out on miui d2w. With 1 gb ext 4...

What results are you guys getting speed related? - I'm guessing the most accurate way to do it would be to test it on your computer through an adapter with the program i mentioned in the first post. But i could be wrong
it shouldn't be more then 2-3Ł.....normail cheapest option.
:O MATE i am getting one, nice find by the way! Class 4 is just not the one when it comes to D2SD or anything other than A2SD+....have you tried this with a ROM using d2EXT? or D2SD? what are your experiences if so?
Hi,
I bought the same card from same seller 16gb class 10 sd card. I am running lee droid 2.3 rom with 1gb ext 3. I did my test on my phone using sd card speed test couple of times it is showing my card write speed as 5 MB/s and reading as 14MB/s. Am i missing something here?

Yeh, i think basically the speed of your sd card in your phone when using ext partitions can depend on the kernel/how good the d2ext scripts are. I think a good thing to do to test the improvement of the sd card, is to do a quadrant test, and compare the benchmark to when you used last sd card.
Also test it in your computer to get a more accurate read/write speed. (and not through usb from phone because for some reason for me, that's very slow)
Dunno if any of you guys saw this

I've had good luck with them! This will replace the 16GB one in the G2x right now, and I'll continue to use the Adata 16GB card in the Acer A100(finally a fairly priced tablet!). In fact that card was used in my Nexus One, prior to me getting the G2x.

Class 4 is decent; anything above it they optimize it for higher sequential read at the cost of random r/w(class 6 means 6mb/s sequential)...most(if not all) class 4s outperform class 6 and 8 at random r/w
All of my SD cards have been ADATA for years and I have yet to have a single one fail me in any way. Unlike many other brands in the same price range.

So if someone wanted to get an sd and partition a section as swap, you're saying a class 4 would outperform a class 10?
He didn't mention anything about a class 10. And no, a class 4 won't out perform a class 10.

Actually, he did mention a class 10. He said anything above a class 4 is optimized for read and takes a hit on r/w performance. 10 is higher than 4, hence, my question.
So, you're saying a class 10 will outperform a class 4 when used as a swap? I would have assumed that the higher the class, the higher the performance for read and r/w. Had not heard of what bakedpotato was talking about with r/w taking a dive the higher class you get.
Just trying to understand as I am interested in finding the answer.
Just thought I'd share... Unless SD Tools is inacurate for this kind of test, it looks like write is decently faster on class 10 than class 4. Just got my PNY 32 gb sd from provantage (~$55 btw). Ran a test for write and read for both PNY 4gb class 4 and PNY 32gb class 10. Was expecting a bit more from the class 10 on reads but still better than the 4. Screens attached...

I saw a benchmark roundup somehwere(let me see if i can find it) saying so,in addition I found setting up class 4s for swap vs. class 10s didn't yield a clear winnner in terms of user experience. The difference between class 2 and 4 was night and day though.
Oh and what was your benchmark benchmarking? In addition I suspect that size matters when it comes to speed...(no pun intended)

Yeah, really not sure what exactly the benchmark is doing on write tests. It could very well just be writing one big file which wouldn't do well for gauging swap file performance. Not sure. I'm a network and systems guy. Not very good with the hardware side but your original post wouldn't shock me if it were true. Was very interested in finding out.

I am only glad to have an intelligent and flame free conversation here so no worries.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633
shows class 4s at the top of the list for small (4kb is I think the block size of a NAND cell most of the time) blocks of random data at a queue depth of 32.
However, I guess what I should've said is that "Class 10/8/6 won't mean any better ux for you on android"
Thx for that. I'll read through it tomorrow. I was thinking about setting up swap on this class 10. Last time I tried to use a swap, I didn't see any improvement. Though, that was on the 2nd android ever realeased (original my touch) and it was running froyo or gb. Ha!
CM7 and MIUI are both really friggin' fast on this phone so not sure it'll do much good.
Have you tried? What about setting a swap internal storage? Possible? Speed?

1. The more the class, the better will be its r/w speed..so go for the class 10 only.
I have no idea whether strontium one is better or sandisk, but latter sounds a trustworthy brand.
2.Please make sure you're buying a Micro SD card

Just wondering which 64gb microsdxc cards are you guys looking to use with your new s4? WIth al the issues with the sandisk 64, wondering if it's worth paying the little extra for samsung 64gb pro UHS1 (does the s4 support that speed?) Anyone know?
Also are you guys planning to use exfat? I hear some of the roms w/the old s3 had issues with exfat and needed fat32
Haven't heard of any problems with the s4, pretty sure there will be more info by next saturday
So I ended up getting the samsung 64gb microsdxc UHS1 speed rated, and also bought a USB 3.0 card reader that supports it. I suspect however the s4 (like the s3) will not support the higher UHS speeds:
I ordered the same card yesterday. I think the quality is alot better than sandisk. And even if the sgs4 dont support the full speed. It's still worth the few bugs more.
But maybe it do support it? Will have to wait and see.

That's also what I have. I've had no problems using it in my Sansa Fuze and Galaxy S.

Yeah the sandisk is no doubt good enough. But the samsung is faster. But the question is. Does the phone even support the ekstra speed.

Don't you have a promotional deal from Samsung in your country? We, in the Netherlands, get a 64gb c10 sd card from Samsung with the S4.
i really love faster loading apps, though i'm normally limited in how many apps i can store on the sd card... however!
-the faster write speed will definitely come in handy when taking dual shot video
-the faster read speed is definitely worth getting UHS-1 but i doubt that you will notice much difference between the sandisk and samsung versions no matter what you're doing.
still, much thanks for the benchmarks, the samsung card will definitely offer a more future-proof solution
How does the Samsung 64GB MicroSD stack up in terms of speed vs the Galaxy S4 internal memory? Also, is it worth the extra $10 or so for the Samsung version vs Sandisk?

What issues are you referring to, testinguser? I'm using the same card mentioned above in my SIII with no issues.....

my 32gb sandisk was effed in my s3, mounted and unmounted every minute, could take a battery from 100 ~ 30 in an hour with screen off in your pocket.. replaced it with a new one and has worked fine since, there's a visual difference of the memory array on the card, so i think there's a upgraded hw version of the sandisk microsd cards. got my bad one from bestbuy last black Friday

Huh.... strange, I bought mine during Black Friday too, not from BBY though, and hasn't caused any problems! But that's what "a bad batch" means, I wasn't in that batch, thankfully
thats good news!! i have not had a bad card either

I went with SanDisk because I've had the fewest problems with that brand compared to say Sony or PNY. I tried using the card as exFAT and ran into problems. Furthermore, it's incompatible with CWM (due to the Microsoft patent, they can't include support), so I used guiformat to reformat it FAT32, and now it runs smoothly and is visible to CWM. Having so much room at hand is quite liberating.
For what it's worth, the 64GB Samsung Extreme Pro card is $49.99 at your local Frys (if you have one nearby) until 5/23.

If not, Amazon recently dropped their pricing to $52.98 shipped.

Picked that up at Radio Shack for $43 before Christmas. Formatted it to fat32 for my Note 2 and popped it in the S4 with no issues.
When I buy another one it'll be SanDisk or Samsung.

How much expandable storage is there?

I have a Samsung EVO 256 GB Micro SD. Will it work? Different sources tell me different things, the huawei website says only up to 128 gb, but maybe someone has found that 256 gb works for a certain rom?
Also, not sure if it matters, but I am in the USA and would be purchasing from Bestbuy.
only 128gb

256gb won't work in that phone, it supports only 128gb
It should
Gsmareana says otherwise and so do some reviews. The honor 8 should support it considering it uses the same filing system.
I've seen reports of people using 256GB working, but was told going 256GB could hurt the card's longevity.
Is this from mine, but I have a US model.. Don't know if it makes a difference.

So 256 GB is working without any workaround ?
Why would someone want a 256gb card?
Movies - screen too small
Uncompressed music - dac not good enough
RAW shooting - 128gb is more than enough
4K shooting - not available
Also 256gb card isn't affected in its longevity.
I got it for free from Samsung. 32 gb isn't enough for me, and it'd be nice if I don't have to go out and buy another one.
Anyone have any thoughts on why Huawei lists it as 128gb limit for expandable storage?

If I had had any 256Gb card around me I would try it for you but unfortunatelly I hadn't. I see there are different oppinions about this case but nothing certain.
If this is the only thing keeping back you from this phone than I can't help but since it is not such a big deal to buy a 64-128GB on ebay/aliexpress (and even you can sell yours) and I would buy the phone.
(I think it would work but I wasn't the guy giving the specifications at Honor).

You don't know how many files other people keep. If I had that much space in SD, I would've used 200 of it.

True. But it has to be an exception. Regular Joe doesn't need that much. Even an enthusiast user.
For the card just format extFAT in the PC and put it in the phone. It won't break anything. The worst it might happen is the sdcard not being recognized.

In an other thrad there is a user who has a 256Gb card in his phone. So it seem to be working but I would highly recommend asking him in PM which version of the phone he is using. Link
256GB should work, if it's anything like other phones with 128GB limit. As far as I'm aware, manufacturers only normally test and approve up until 128GB, but it will most likely work.
On another note, I wish the 64GB version was available in Europe!

So why did they put a 128GB limit if 256 will work just fine?
Sent from my honor 5X using XDA Labs
How long have the 256GB cards been available in the micro form factor now? (It doesn't seem like it was that long ago that the biggest was 200GB...for some reason?) I'd guess either 256GB cards weren't available or Honor just didn't put some through the validation process. They still come at quite a price premium over 128GB cards, so that was almost certainly worse a year ago.

The 64gig is available in Europe. Its called honor 8 premium and comes only in gold. (FRD-L19). I paid about 25-30€ more for the premium version in Hungary.
