Phone shutting down at random %ages (50, 60, 40+) - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
I'm facing a weird issue with my phone from more than 2 months and it has reached a frustrated level now. It used to shut off at levels like 15%, sometimes between 15-25%. But nowadays, it shuts down automatically at 40-60% and that is really unreliable. So, i wanted to check if there are other people facing the same issue or is it only my device. Please share your views, any possible solutions, possible reasons, and if applicable, similar experiences.

thanks for the info, i got my oneplus one back in 2013, hopefully it will not shutdown after a while. i have not found such problem and hope i will not in the future as i want to have the phone for at least 5 years

I had the same issue after I updated to MM and recently after latest update also. I had to do the same thing. Reason behind that was xposed was incompatible. But as I flashed everything. (/system/data too ) now its working fine

Thanks for the details. Unfortunately, i would need some time to perform this as i barely get time to flash roms. Thanks again!

thanks so much, bought it after my nexus4 died which im still sad about because its one of my 1st real android phones after having a contract android phone.

As an update, i kept my phone on charge for straight 4-5 hours. and now it shuts down after 20-25%. Definitely an improvement. But still it's a mystery why does it show this bug in the first place.

Umm, how has no one mentioned maybe trying battery calibration!? Seems like a fairly obvious first step here to take before swapping out for a new battery.. Plug the phone in and let it charge entirely. Even at 100% in Settings > Battery it will still show "100% - Charging on AC" (or USB whatever you've got connected)
You need to wait for that to turn into "100% - Charged." Then, calibrate using any battery calibration app from the playstore, ( I use this one )
After it charges to 100% - Charged, hit "calibrate" in the app, disconnect the charger, and let it drain entirely. You might find it dying out before 0% once again, but this hopefully should have been the last time. Plug the phone in and switch it on as soon as you can while it starts to charge. Let it charge uninterruptedly to 100% - Charged, again.
Not saying this might solve it 100% but it is an option to try.

Well already tried and i may sound a bit silly, but studies have proved that battery calibration is a myth. Android automatically cleans the batterystats.bin file after every single full charge. Rest assured, i have already done that with no avail.

I had the same problem, phone was switching off @ 40% and at times @35%. Battery calibration certainly helped. No more problems now. Works well if the phone is rooted.

Random Shutdown..slightly different view on this problem

Update 14/09/2012
Ok, I don't think what I had in mind helped. On 13th, I had multiple shutdown while trying to use cameras and today had multiple shutdown while on the phone to someone.
Think I will try doing something with Firmware next, now have a feel it might be the cause. I have no idea what is wrong, so just going to give with anything really. Will report back soon.
Update: 13/09/2012
After a complete drain the first time, by booting into recovery and bootloader (just want to remind everyone that this is because I can't make my phone boot). Then I left it on charging for the whole night, and I did this through wall charger NOT USB. I think I read it somewhere that they recommended this when calibrating your battery. Then the next day got 1 random shutdown, then I used it until it is completed drain again. Then followed by another full charge using wall charger. Today I have been using it for 6 hours and 21 minutes, haven't had a single problem. I don't know how not doing this would cause the phone to shutdown, but doing what I did seems to be working so far. I can actually rely on it for something now, say important phone calls.
Here was my reply to elvisypi:
Just to answer your question, it would random shutdown (not so much reboot) at anytime, at any battery percentage. I could do be doing anything, using any app, sometimes when I am not even using the phone.
I don't think it's a hardware/battery/ROM/kernel problem, I tried to say that it is a combined problem caused by flashing a phone too many times maybe or too often in a period of time. Also I was just about to update saying that calibrate battery does help. I had no reboot so far and this is only the second full charge and full drain I did.

After reading kushXmaster's post (click here) about how to add an object to help the battery stay in position (or get better connection), I found evidence that my issue was different. Before anyone ask, yes I have tried kushXmaster's idea, and no it did not work for me.
Ok, this is what I found. I had this problem not only with my current phone (htc sensation) but also with my previous phone (htc desire). So now thinking about it, it can't be the hardware problem. Cos the same problem happening to 2 different phones is pretty unlikely, not impossible, but very unlikely. The other thing was that my phones (both) didn't do this at the start when it was new, and it has only been like this a few months later (since I rooted it). For those who already guessed, yes I believe it's the flashing phones which is messing it up. However I don't know the reason or understand what is wrong with the phone. I have tried wipe battery stats and calibration, nothing worked, the only thing I found was when I go back to Sense 4 roms the problem seems better, but it is still there.
The last and most important reason why I am don't think this is a battery or hardware problem, is that my phone boots into bootloader or recovery with no problem (no reboot or shutdown). But when i tell it to boot normally it decides it hates me and turns it self off.
I am currently experiencing this problem, my phone is in recovery and I am waiting for battery to drain completely. Then gonna do calibration from there, hopefully this will work. I will keep you guys updated. Also if anyone has suggestions please leave a comment, and also let me know if anyone else is in the same position, good luck!
If you want to drain your device battery faster or more nicer way put screen timeout to never and like this you can still use your phone normal and drain the battery aswell just a little tip

If I could get it to turn on then I have a lot of ways to drain it quickly, but like I said it won't boot without shutting down before I could do anything. I turn it on, and I see the lock screen then bam it is shut down again.

If you get random reboots, shutdowns, than don't even bother to calibrate the battery. It has nothing to do with the calibration. Tell us more info, how do the reboots happen, how often, what are you doing when it happens, etc. It could be a kernel/ROM problem, charger, battery, hardware. Pls give us more detailed info

Thanks for the tip, but tbh if i know all that I don't really need to be asking anyone. For example, if it is a ROM problem, i just change ROM. The problem is that I don't know the cause and it seems to be everything and anything, it will shut down at different length of time, sometimes when it just starts, others 30 seconds after boot has completed. I am not looking for a solution, I am more wondering what everyone else has experienced when they say they have random reboots or shutdown, because after tones of research no one has provided anything that fixes my problem.
Just to answer your question, it would random shutdown (not so much reboot) at anytime, at any battery percentage. I could do be doing anything, using any app, sometimes when I am not even using the phone.

I had a same reboot problem and tried the kushXmaster's trick with the business card and did not worked for me either, at the beginning…
There was no reboot or shutdown in bootloader mode in my device either. When I flashed new firmware and ROM the problem was gone, but only for few weeks. I tried multiple ROMs also, but always with the same result. This is why I was skeptic with the business card battery fix also.
But then I read kushXmaster's thread again and put an alu foil as shown by Shreyas Jani and pulled the ground pin as described by StuartTheFish. I still do not understand what happened, but my phone is working perfectly more than a month now, without restarts and shut downs. I do not know which solution helped (not sure if I placed a business card correctly before). But I do not want to experiment with this anymore. I did not even removed a battery cover since that time and I'm glad it is all working now.
Hope this helps.

I experienced exactly what you experienced, when i flash a new ROM it is ok for a while. Then just gets to the stage where it happens again. I also tried almost every single ROM I could find, only sense 4 seemed to help but still didn't solve this problem completely.
Thanks for the help, really useful. If what I am trying now doesn't work then what you suggested will definably be my next hope. Cheers!
Edit: I know what you mean, if it works that back cover is not coming off.
same as you
I experience now typically the same problem as yours.
Did changing firmware helped? And how to do this?

Battery Issue

In the last few weeks i've been having major battery problems with my phone.
The percentage seems to be jumping around so it will show 100% very quickly when charging then quickly drop after not much usage. It always seems to reboot around 20% then I struggle to get it back on and when I do it will show 4% etc.
I've tried resetting the battery stats and two different roms but no luck. Is this likely a hardware issue? If so, could I get it looked at under warranty even though i've unlocked it? It's very frustrating...I like this phone but can't put up with this for much longer and if I have to replace it I might as well just get a nexus 4...
try calibrate your battery.
discharge it, and recharge it while the phone is off for few hours.

Just switch to TWRP and indeed, it stays off ifyou plug the charger in. I'll try calbrating...
Even after calibration my issue still persists. The rom starts rebooting like crazy as the power drops down to 40% 'ish, the phone is becoming unusable. Is there anything else I can try to debug this? Different radio? ROM? replacement battery?
Have you opened the back of your phone? That really sounds like you have a connection issue with the battery but being that it's a little cable and not pins sort of seems unlikely but possible.

Well I've actually ordered a replacement battery off eBay so I'm going to try that.
What I've noticed is I can charge it to 100% with the phone off. If I turn it on and run it down to say 60% then put it back on charge with its powered on, it says its fully charged after about a minute. Clearly its not charged....

Happened to me once before also..I spoke to Moto Care about that, they didn't had any real answer..it's probably a software bug that causes battery not to calibrate as it should..

There is already a thread for this, and a suspected cause:
It's not a calibration issue, but sensor configuration or fpga. In my opinion it can be corrected from software, but a simple rom change won't help unless they focus on correcting this issue.

Did you update to KK? It's common known bug after updating an other phones such moto x.
Do this only once:
Download StabilityTest (ROOT optional) turn one wifi, gps, bluetooth. Run the program and start the "Classic stability test" leave the phone till it turns off. Then "power"+"vol-" run recovery mode and leave the phone it will turn of after a wail-make this step f times till it won't work and only the led will blink. You have now maximal drained out battery. Now plug the charger and make it 100% then start the hone enjoy-I hope it will help you.
i bough this phone one week ago, i read this post yesterday and i though it was a very bad problem i was happy not havig it, yesterday night i left the phone in airplane mode ad 70% battery today morning i found it off, fully discharged, i put it on charge and after recharging of 30% it jumped to 100% full charge
should i replace the phone? theres any other thread about this problem?

Happened to me: I charged the phone to 85% using a laptop USB then took the phone out to use it, when I came back 30 minutes later I plugged back in to continue charging it dropped to 1% instantly then powered itself off as battery was nearly flat. Reboot phone then plug into laptop and starts charging from 1%.
10 mins later it's about 8% charged and I take phone to car, charge it using a Motorola car USB charger and the phone battery goes back to about 85% instantly.
It seemed to me that using a PC usb socket to charge the phone caused the issues rather than using a 'proper' charger. Maybe others can confirm whether they've had the issue only if using a PC usb port to charge it up?
Mine is UK tesco 8GB Moto G running Kitkat official firmware, not rooted, bl locked and not been flashed other than official software.

Hey man, sorry to hear that you are also facing the same problem Can you share some specifics?
- Have you ever rooted your phone?
- Does your phone shut down within seconds of opening snapchat, regardless of the current battery level?
- Have you experienced totally unstable performance, like sudden battery level drops of 20-30%?
- Have you tried going back to a lower firmware?
- Have you tried removing the SD card, if any?
Let's work together to understand our problem better and hope for a solution

Here are my answer
1. Currently not rooted as on fresh firmware 5.1.1
2.no.. battery level dropping is normal...it also never drops after reboot too... But some time from 40 to 14 then battery low warning and shut down.....and some time it automatically reboot...only samsung logo appear again reboot.and i dont usw snapchat.
3.i faced this issue in 6.0 so i lowered it to 5.1.1 but still same..
4.no i havet tried removing sd card...i have 64gb sd card installed.
Over all i think its firmware problem...hence waiting for reply from edge users as some are not facing.
Hope i have answered ur query. We will work and get out a solution.

Hey man,
So,
Couple of things about my problem so that we can maybe point out similarities and maybe a common cause.
- I had my phone rooted the first time the problem appeared (android 4.4.4)
- I updated my phone to Lollipop, and that's when i first started getting hints of this problem
- At first i thought, it was a charging issue. but it started happening more and more often.
- now, it pretty much happens everyday and is making my life miserable.
- I started to notice that my battery roughly dies around 37%. From what i've read online, this battery level can be different from person to person.
- From the moment it dies, it restarts itself and goes into a bootloop.
- The moment i plug it back in, it show a battery level of 0%.
- And then, within a few minutes, the battery level goes back to where it initially was when it first died.
- My battery discharge was really turbulent, the whole graph was a mess. I would see sharp drop till I would reach the dreaded 30% area.
- I noticed that right after I enter snapchat, it takes about 3-5 seconds for the reboot to happen. This happens regardless of the battery level as it has once happened to me at about 80% battery.
- The best thing that ever happened to me was when i first took out my SD card. It was 64 GB samsung sd card so i thought it would really mesh together well. I never thought about it being a possible cause. Boy was i wrong, turns out my battery performance almost returned to normal. Got to about 75% after 9 hours. No snapchat but again around the 11 hour mark. I launched chrome and the BAM, it happened again :'(
- I decided to unroot and return to 4.4.4 thinking that a custom kernel was the problem.
- Still No Luck
I have read many places online that it maybe an issue with the battery. But, I refuse to believe that is the issue. i have also tried another battery. although i think it may have been fake. Haven't tried a replacement OEM battery yet.
I would suggest a few things you can do:
- For starters take a screenshot of your current battery usage charts and then once the problem happens, remove the SD card and charge your phone while powered off and report back with another screenshot so that we can compare and see if removing the SD card has had any positive effect.
- Please clarify if you have ever rooted? sorry I was unable to fully understand from your answer.

Do u mean by installing this ur battery last upto 0%. Without reboots / bootloop....
Can u confirm ur model no and firmware version.
Guys after a lot of search found something to save much more battery life, worked for me, give a try:
1,open dialer and dial *#0228#
2,after dialing *#0228# the battery status menu will popup.
3,hit ( quick start ) at bottom of the screen in red color
4,hit ( yes ) and go to settings/battery and disable fast charging for 1 charge only.
5,power off the phone and charge to 100%.
6,turn on the phone and if it shows 97,98,99 plug in charger again and charge to 100%.
7,once it charge to 100% unplug charger and this will create new battery calibration status automatically.now you can enable fast charge again.
8, Next go to play store and download wakelock power app and install it. Open the app and hit (PARTIAL WAKE LOCK) as in screenshot below.
This app will help the cpu to run much more efficient and smoother and also prevent device from over heating and this app does not require root access.
Download wakelock power app link below.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...u.thedarken.wl
THIS METOHOD WORKS ONLY WITH STOCK OFFICIAL FIRMWARE IF YOU ARE RUNNING AOSP ROMS/CYANOGENMOD ROMS/NOTE7 ROMS/S7EDGE ROMS/ OR OTHER PORTED ROMS DIALING *#0228# MAY NOT WORK. (SOME PORTS COULD WORK LIKE Dr. KetanRom, EnhancedRom, RamRom.)
HIT THANKS IF THIS WORKS FOR YOU

Thanks for the help,I appreciate it but unfortunately it's still restarting and getting stuck in a boot loop and this continues until I plug my phone in. This battery is only 8 months old. And this problem didn't start until the last security update. It's getting worse every day. It started happening at 80%, now when my phone gets to 98% it goes into this boot loop. I have the Verizon version. Maybe I'll try a factory reset

Now you're getting somewhere, from the sounds of it.
It almost sounds like the security system in the phone is seeing something it doesn't like on startup and doing a reboot to try and purge it.
I really hate Samsung's built in security.

Oneplus One Reboot Issue : Suggestion or Help Needed

My OPO is having a reboot issue, was on cos13, cm14.1 and ubuntu with mutirom,
Symptoms
1. the phone stays on if connected to a charger or powerbank.
and without charger it bootloops at the 1+ logo
2. in switched off state, when charger is connected the battery sometimes shows 0% and increases to 100%
3. with charger i entered cm recovery, removed the charger, the phone stayed all night long with cm recovery menu display on.
after draining the battery, i plugged back charger and the phone in switched off state did show the regular charging animation and took the usual time to full charge.
after full charge I removed the charger, tried to power on the phone boot loops at 1+ logo.
4. without charger it can enter fastboot mode.
5. with charger it can boot into os, shows charging, led lit up, but after removing charger it won't stay long, also if opening camera it turns off.
6. even on powerbank it can boot up and stay switched on. and work normally (camera etc anything)
(7. while turned off and on charger the animation shows charging but the top led isn't on.) - I don't remember it lighting up on charging while switched off
8. the night before this issue occured, my phone rebooted twice while watching youtube. and in the previous nights also I noticed battery dropping overnight.
what all I tried,
1. fastboot flashed cos, - not solved
2. flashed using Qualcomm USB port tool - not solved.
3. ran the make_ext4fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p15 command in twrp. - not solved.
4. erased and flashed persist.img - not solved.
so what could be the problem, opo is now my secondary phone, now using op3 as primary.
The battery is at its end of its life....replace the battery and all your problem will be gone...
you're not the only one that have experiences this problem (i have seen more then 10 people having the same problem)...last year and this year there a lot of people having bootloop problem due to dying battery...factory reset, flash stock rom and etc won't help you solved this problem...
i personally have this problem last year and after i replace the battery all my problem gone...i think Oneplus made OPO batteries only lasted for 2 and a half year....

thanks for the reply i guessed that, but still wasn't sure, can it be also due to any issues to board, anyway since i've done with flashing and all i'll try an OP service center, and hope it won't costs me big.

Nope it is not issues with the motherboard but batteries...the phone can be turn on like normal when charger is connected and goes into bootloop once the charger is disconnected....its a clear sign that the battery is dying...when it connected to the charger, it may look like the battery is full but it is not...just buy a new battery and all your problem will be gone...you can try flashing lot of rom, revert to stock or whatever you do in fastboot but it ain't gonna help you...it might boot normally but within an hour it will goes back to bootloop....
like i said before i was on the same pages as you last year...all the flashing stuff didn't work until i replace the battery....there no issues with the motherboard whatsoever....my phone still work atm without any bootloop problem...
feel free to go to OP services center if you want, if they tell you it was a motherboard issues then you have been screwed by the services center by repairing something that is still in good condition and you gonna pay more then just a batteries afterwards...

I have almost exactly the same problem. The thing is I cannot find a way to enter multirom recovery even on a charger. When on a charger it tries to boot into my primary rom but gets stuck on it endlessly.
Are you sure its the battery? I mean, mine charges to 100% when plugged in and doesnt seem to have any problem with charging. Mine did it a few days ago, it went into a bootloop for no reason. I havent touched anything for a year and it happened so randomly and lost everything I had on it...

Hey dude Thanks a lot... I was facing exactly same issue for last 2 days... I bought OPO on Dec 5 th 2014... I think its battery only works 2 years...
@iPusak Gaoq™, tried to get a suitable battery online but the shipping charge killed most deals, some were even counterfeits, so finally I decided to visit an op service centre, they replaced the battery with a new one, now my OPO is good as new. thanks again.
I was just going to post, about my issue, but the forum suggested your post. I read the first post, and yes, I am facing the exact same problem. Taking a picture and the phone shuts off. Vibrating from getting a notification and restart.
And the saddest part, the phone won't boot into OS if is it not plugged to PC or AC power.
My Opo is almost two years old. Can you suggest a good battery replacement for me?

Hard to suggest which batteries is good if you planning to bought it online cause there no way you can know whether the batteries you gonna buy is original or OEM...only when you bought the batteries in a retail store then you can see whether its original or OEM and yes the differences between both batteries is noticeable...
