Plugged in Transformer last night to charge it up overnight when the battery hit 30%. I updated the firmware yesterday morning and everything was going swimmingly.
Woke it up this morning, and found it was at 9% battery remaining and had a low battery warning. I had a closer look and the battery icon shows no indication that it's charging when it's plugged in.
Right now I've plugged it into a bog-standard USB charger and turned it off, hoping it'll trickle charge (damn the lack of a charge LED!) and that it's a fault with the power adapter rather than the device itself.
Anyone else had this issue?
I had the same problem a few days ago, my charger was plugged in via a multi block and it would not charge.
I even went to the extreme of taking my device back to comet in the hope I could swap the charger out with their demo unit.
Man behind counter plugs my charger into some sort electrical surge protected socket and it starts charging straight away leaving me looking like a right tool standing their. (and they tried to sell me 3 years extended cover)
Brought it home and plugged it into the very socket where it wasn't working and what do you know? It starts working!
Not sure what the issue was but it now works again.
Ok well that's good to know!
On trickle-charge it's now gone up by 2% since I posted.
Looks like the power adapter has its own faults...
Oh, and what do you know... plugged wall charger back in (it's been unplugged for 20mins) and now it's all happy and charging again.
Hooray.
yeah maybe that 20 minute trip to comet fixed mine too..
the USB mains adapter plug has a fatal flaw - the middle part of the usb connection isn't as sturdy as it sould be so it is easy to plug a USB port in the wrong way around and it looks and feels plugged in correctly as the middle part just moves out of the way.
If it isn't charing always check to make sure the USB connection is in the right way around in the plug.
I am bummed about this proprietary power connector; and apparently proprietary USB cable with extra pins (negating the use of USB extension cables). I wish the TF had a standard round power adapter similar to the Acer A500.
Thank God, i thought i was the only one. Had exactly this problem with mine when it arrived a couple of days ago, i am lucky enough to have lots of USB chargers around so i tried and tested various combinations and tried to charge other devices with the asus charger.
The problem lies as far as i can see, entirely with the charger unit. The charger comes in two parts, one is the usb dock and the other the relevant country plug. The way the plug fits onto the face of the charger is the important part. There is a central 'locating pin' made from plastic and two contacts that slot into the charger carrying the live and negative. The construction of this part is very, very poor. The tolerances are not a match for the quality of the plastic, the T shaped plastic locater does not actually locate the bottom pins properly and needs a great deal of force to lock in placce, and here is the best part, it doesnt like STAYING locked. As the plastic is weak, and we are looking at just a couple of mm here, it will snap, that will stop there being a clean contact and no charge. As a remedy, i have secured the face plate to the charger very tightly with a high tech rubber band
I agree, the use of specific power connectors in this day and age is just as dumb a decision as any manufacturer can make, and the rate it recharges at from a USB to PC connection can only be described as comical, a full recharge in 26 hours . Aside from all that its nigh on perfect, but i can see power related alternatives being VERY popular until Asus catches up with the rest of the electronics industry.
havent even had mine an hour and i havent done the update because its not at 50% and it will not charg at all. when i first tried to start it i thought it was doa because it would not turn on. guess ill take you guys advice and leave it unplugged for a while. i hate the charging cable is so small too that definately sucks.
Hmmm... if only a few other people created topics about not charging...
Ok, first a little background on this issue...
After having my S3 for about 13-14 months I started having charging issues. The charging port was very "loose" and I had to make sure my charger cable was in just right to get my phone to charge. This was annoying, however was out of warranty and didn't want to pay vzw for an insurance claim. This got worse, and eventually I noticed my phone would only charge with 1 specific usb cable, 1 specific wall charger, and 1 specific car charger.
Well, I finally called Samsung and explained the situation to them and they had me chip my phone to them and they would repair it, free of charge. When they had it, they replaced the charging port, the headphone jack, and the screen. I received the phone back after couple weeks, super excited, and immediately charged it up with the cable I had next to my bed. New charging port felt perfect, nice snug fit, etc... Well, after a few days i hooked it up with the original usb cable that came with the phone, nothing happened. So i started messing around and realized that the only usb cables that will charge my phone are Motorola brand cables! At least the 2 cables I have work, and not a single other cable I've tried works! This includes stock Samsung cable, many cheap 3rd party cables, other friend's S3 cables, none work. Also, I have this cheap car charger that is the type you plug a USB cable into that works, however any other car charger I've tried does not work either.
Also, when i say the cables won't charge my phone, it also won't connect the phone to a PC. They do absolutely nothing.
Does anyone have ANY idea why this is happening?!?! It was an issue before Samsung repaired my phone, they replaced the charging port, but I still have this issue!! I can send it back to Samsung for them to look at it again, however my backup phone, a Razr Maxx, just died also. Seems like the battery went dead and now I can't get it to charge, but that's another issue.
So, any ideas?!

What rom/kernal
It doesn't matter. It does this when it is totally stock and rooted. Right now I'm not rooted or anything because it looks like it may be going back to Samsung again.

I think the smart charging circuit may be messed up
Really? How would that cause the phone to not work with any cable except a certain brand?? I'm just really curious and this is driving me insane!!

I would say you are putting mechanical stress on the charging port. This could be from some misaligned or mis-made cable or somehow pressing or pulling the charge cable when its connected. I've never seen this reported by anyone else, but the mechanical connections are not indestructible. If it were a common symptom with 100 million S3s having been sold, there would be a firestorm of complaints.
I have a similar issue. I'm not sure if it's the device or the ROM (CM nightlies).
Certain cables force the screen to turn back on, which means I get negative charge because the screen burns more than the charger is capable of supplying. Other cables are fine. I'm still looking for the pattern, it's super annoying and causes me to have to turn my phone off completely at times so as not to lose my battery altogether. I'm still trying to solve this, any help would be appreciated.

Further info- it's not the cable, it's the converter at the end. I think it has to do with amperage of the charger- if I use the stock samsung one I'm good, it's putting out 1.0A. If I use others that are fewer amps (like 700 mA) it's unpredictable. I suspect a kernel thing, I might download different kernels to play with it.

Always use chargers that is 1 A - 2A the circuit controls most of the charging regulating amps and voltage
Yes, I agree about using good chargers, but my phone wasn't always this way. It used to charge with anything, but no longer.
I enabled fast charge on Imosyen's lean kernel. That might have made a difference, but I'm not positive yet.
Seems like it's charging super slow for some reason. I'd do some troubleshooting maybe it's the power source or something if anyone having the same issue please let me know how you guys fix it.
Nvm. The Cable wasn't fully in lol

Dooooh
Lol, well my S6 Edge charger seems to only do normal charging when connected to my Note 5. Not sure why but its exactly the same as the Note 5 charger.

Ok, so oddly enough, I noticed the exact same issue last night. I did a few searches online, and found something interesting. According to one of the sites I visited, the fast-charging only kicks in when the battery is below a certain level, 15% I believe. Then, as it's charging and the percentage rises, the charging slows down. Long story short: the lower your battery is, the faster it'll charge. I guess Sammy didn't want to burn out your Note 5 battery by fast-charging all the time. I'll try to find that article and post it here for you!
Note: I let my phone drop into the low teens last night, and sure enough, it began fast-charging as soon as I plugged it in. Maybe it's just coincidence though...who knows.
Edit: Here's the article: http://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/08/20/5-quick-chargers-for-the-galaxy-note-5-s6-edge-plus/
That's false, actually it will fast charge on any percentage level.
Right now I'm at 10% and it says cable charging, sometimes I'll be at 90% and it will say fast charging. No fix yet? I do know if you unplug and plug back in several times it will say fast charging. Sometimes one time, sometimes 4-6 times...

I have the same issue. Tried different kernels. Haven't tried switching roms though. I'm on breakdown v3. Rom isn't the issue though. No idea what is going on
Maybe it's the cable? I had to get a new one. Like I burned the old one up.
My cousins note 5 wouldn't fast charge, and I told him to swap out the cable, and boom it worked again.
So, seemingly, we have a sudden burst of people with this issue. I guess the OEM cable has a couple month life expectancy lol
Yup, cable
I've noticed this issue too. I just keep plugging it in until it fast charges (usually 5 or 6 times). Not a great workaround, but it works.
Mine has thus problem too , but if I use the same USB cable and the charger that came with my Note 3 it at least charges at regular speed, but with the fast charger and same cable I get less than that .
My indian note 5 has the same problem. Sometimes it fast chargesvand sometimes not. I went to Samsung service center and got the charger replaced. Now it is workinf fine.
I tried using the cable that came with my Note 4, and now it works fine. It's a longer cable, maybe that has something to do with it.
It's clearly not dependent on being at a certain percentage considering mine is fast charging right now and it's at 57 and will continue to fast charge until full or at least display a notification that it's fast charging until it's full.
In all my testing it's the cables. I have 4 power adaptive blocks that came with various models including N4, S6E, S6E+, and N5. All the blocks work with my N5 as long as I use the USB cable from my Note 4. If I use a cable from the S6E, S6E+, or the N5 it doesn't fast charge. The N4 cable is much beefier then the newer cables. Maybe they are just making cheaper cables nowadays. The N3 charger was beefier then the N4 charger although that's kind of expected being usb 3.0.

Is it the cable or the adapter that determines the fast charging??? For instance can I use my longer thicker note 4 cord with the new note 5 base and get fast charging?
I think the USB cable that comes with the Samsung fast chargers is faulty. I have 2 fast chargers, 1 from the S6 edge and 1 from the Note 5 and neither one of them will fast charge with the supplied usb cable. I can use any other usb cable and fast charging will work, it just won't work with the Samsung cables.

Its been over a month that ive had my 64g note 5. Just yesterday ive noticed that my so called fast charger wasnt charging my phone as it did in the earlier weeks of usage. No i havent exposed my phone ro any liquids and my charger port is covered by my phone case flaps. And no i havent altered my original oem charger cradle/ usb cord. Any one else experiencing the same problem?
Try plugging the charger directly into the wall outlet (If it wasn't already). If you have any alternate USB cables, try some of those. Otherwise it's the adapter or the phone.
Typically unless you notice the actual port having problems the USB cable is probably worn out. They are usually cheap and frequent bending on any portion of the cable will cause it to eventually break the wire inside.
This is one of the benefits of wireless charging. You won't have to worry about wear on the port or dealing with broken/worn USB cables.
Edit: What I did notice about a week ago was my Fast wired charger was cutting in/out or the phone would say it was only charging at standard speed. I had the adapter attached to an extension cord and decided to just run it directly to my power strip, which solved my problem.
An extension cord won't matter. The charger dongle either gets juice or doesn't...
I bought the Choetech fast wireless charger, working great. Heard there's been issues regarding Samsung brand. But the wireless charging works very well. I have the Choetech fast charger & a Spigen wireless dock, both flawless not cutouts!

For me the issue seems to be the lock screen. When on the lock screen and I plug the charger in I usually do not get fast charge. But if I first log on then it usually will fast charge.

Juice directly from an outlet will always be more than juice coming from an extension cord (especially if its a cheap one) connected to a powerstrip connected to an outlet. If you have ever cut open an extension cord, you'd see why. Below all that plastic are a few silky copper threads which can in no way possible convey the amount of electricity that the thick wires behind your outlet can.

Yes but the dongle is vastly reducing what goes to the phone anyway

Issues with the stock chargers for a lot of people on the note 5. Mine wouldn't fast charge unless plugged and unplugged a bunch. Not good for the port. Got a verizon red tip rapid charger like a few other coworkers got and it fast charges everytime I plug it in. No matter extension or not.. Or 20% or 90%. [emoji4]

My pixel 2 XL stopped charging at all of the sudden and only accepts slow charging and with a "Chinese" cable. The original cable doesn't work. No the cable ain't broken or the charger. My girlfriend has a pixel 3 and she uses my charger and cable and works on hers. We used also her charger and cable ( from pixel 3s ) and on her pixel 3 everything works comes to mine it doesn't even recognize to start charging.
Yes I'm using the original one.. I wrote it all but I don't know why XDA deleted some stuff.
Anyway yeah always used the original one and always been using. Never used another cable or charger actually.
It just happened put of nowhere, morning was fine when I went to bed couldn't charge it.
The only way I'm able to charge my phone now is with those lame cables of 1£ and it charges super slow. 5h for 80%. But that's literally the only way.
I've done factory reset, hard and soft resets, battery calibration, cleaned the port with toothpicks... Nothing seems to work.
It's a weird problem because the original cables don't work just the non original ones , which charge super super slow, but I'm also sure the cable and the chargers don't have any problem because I live with my girlfriend and she always uses them ( the one who came with my phone and the one who came with hers , she has a pixel 3 ) and no problems with her. Just with me.
Maybe my battery is faulty ?
Try some rubbing alcohol and a toothbrush. Mine kept connecting and disconnecting repeatedly while charging. Here, I had a nice peice of lint in the port. Just an idea. Hope you get it figured out ?
I had something like this happen a while ago and the problem for me also turned out to be lint in the charging port. It actually looked totally clean, but when I stuck something in there to clean it out I was surprised that there was lint.
Don't stick anything metal in the charging port though, because it could short out the connections. I just cut out a thin piece of plastic from a plastic cup and used it to scrap around. A piece with a nice point on it is good. Try to pick out any lint that's at the bottom of the charging port that may be preventing the cable from inserting all the way.
Good luck. Hope that helps.
