Not able to make or receive calls on LTE - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It's not rom or radio related, I have been facing this issue since 4G was first used in Turkey. I'm able to send sms or have access to internet, device model is D821. Anybody know something about that?

It's normal behaviour because LTE is commonly used only for data connection except your network have VoLTE (Voice over LTE) functionality.

Desire S Call Issues

Hi,
I have a HTC Desire S which I bought Sim Free and am currently using a Vodafone UK SIM. I notice that a lot of my calls whilst on a HSDPA signal or even EDGE seem to be routed to voicemail even though the setting is disabled and I experience data blocks. Even though I'm shown I have data connectivity I cant use data and calls wont connect.
I was wondering whether you would think this is a SIM or a phone issue. I have had this on two Desire S phones and when using the SIM with a 2G only phone I don't seem to experience this problem. I'm in an area where there should be great indoor and outdoor coverage and the provider has no reported issues at the moment.
I think the problem is with network...
As you said with 2G you don't experience any issues...that proves the point...
I would suggest use only 2G (GSM) mode rather than edge...
until network improves...
Also that would give a better battery life ;-)
I too had a few calls go to voicemail when I should have had signal to receive calls, on t mobile uk, suspect that it's as the signal strength seems to fluctuate sometimes which I have seen, especially when using wifi And/or data.
Although not happened enough to be a really a massive problem.

Yes, like vampire36 said, the problem is in the EDGE & HSDPA network.
Try using 2G for a while with EDGE & HSDPA are closed for a few days then report back.
Hope this works out for you
I'm also on vodafone uk and I haven't had this issue, I'd say call the support line (as foolish as it sounds) as this isn't a problem I have had at all :/
But for the time being just stick to 2G so you can receive calls and such

Thanks for the tips. Vodafone have told me that there are 2 masts down serving my area so there isn't any 3G coverage and when I do very rarely get on HSDPA I experience data blocks because of the insufficient coverage. Even on 2G there are coverage issues because of these masts so now at least I know where the problem lies.
Has been an issue since February and this isn't rural countryside we are talking about but literally on the edge of the City of London! At least they've halved my bill till they sort it out.

T-Mobile, drops from LTE to 3G when making a call

Just wondering if this happens to anyone else. My N5 was originally on Sprint but just recently switched to TMO. I have noticed that when on the TMO network my phone will drop to 3G whenever I make or receive a call. As soon as the call is over it switches back to LTE.
If I put my Sprint SIM back in and use their network it seems to hold LTE while on the call.
This is not scientific and am basing this observation from the network signal indicator on the top status bar. And as far as I can tell it isn't affecting performance. More of a curiosity at this point.

this is how its supposed to work. phone calls cant go through the lte signal(in this case, with tmibile) to the phone, so it drops to 3G(H).
LTE in it's current implementation is a DATA ONLY service so when you make voice calls it drops that connection and connects the call. Since 3G is Voice/Data it shows the 3G/H connection available to you at that time. When you hang up it goes back to LTE.
With Sprint it uses CDMA so theres no simultaneous option with that so LTE is kept alive in order to deliver data at the sametime.
All expected behavior as already mentioned
Thanks for the info. Makes perfect sense how that is explained. I am rooted and cleaned out some apps I don't want. I'm particularly careful to not mess things up and noticed the change in behavior on TMO. Wanted to make sure something I hacked for Sprint didn't FUBAR the connection.

I noticed this too on ATT.
When in calls it drops to H .
Thanks for the explanation

It is called CSFB (circuit switched fallback), which will soon be replaced by VoLTE (Voice over LTE), which will be a plain and simple SIP-controlled VOIP call using LTE as carrier. Not sure if current phones can and/or will be upgraded to be able to do VoLTE, or if todays LTE handsets are stuck falling back forever...

Fix for T-Mobile LTE?

Is there a workaround or any suggestions to get everything functional such as calls etc.
As of now only data works but you can't receive or send out messages, make calls etc.
When connected to H+ everything works flawlessly and the carrier shows, when connected to LTE only data works nothing else and the phone can't identify what carrier is being used.

UPDATE:
The issue seems to be that Verizon by default is locking the GSM radio. Users are reporting the same in the Moto X and Droid Ultra forum. Users using 4.4.2 on T-Mobile with a Verizon device.

They are SIM unlocked as I'm using one but it seems the band we need for LTE isn't playing well.

Was curious if anyone else was having this issue. Any thoughts that it might be related to skipping Verizon activation? When I got the phone, wasn't activated and on first turn on it prompted activating Verizon Sim but I exited out and just popped in T-Mobile Sim.

AFAIK, LTE (unless the carrier is using voLTE) is a data only network. Verizon uses LTE for data and CDMA for calls and text.
Verizon seems to only allow GSM/UMTS or CDMA/LTE on the M8 at one time, there doesn't seem to be a true Global mode that allows GSM/UMTS and LTE to run at the same time.
That would explain why people are reporting either LTE or calls/texting (which, as above mentioned, only works on 2G/3G (be that CDMA or GSM))
The question is, is there a way to get around this? On the S3/S4 there was an app called phoneinfo which showed more modes than the Mobile Network settings menu. Is there such a thing for the M8?
This is quite disappointing news for me, since this is the first Verizon phone I'm aware of that has the 1800MHz LTE band, and that's the band used in Australia where I'm headed soon. I was excited about being able to finally use LTE there! I guess I'll have a choice between LTE and calls/text like all those in this thread using T-Mobile.

Hoping the best that this would be the fix for the GSM
while you edit the data as well I believe
Will never get 4G LTE on any other carrier besides Verizon in the US. Never have. Never will. Those radio bands are blocked at chip level.

More than likely it is same as Verizon. Won't happen till they have voice and data both over AWS network. Currently on Verizon data is on LTE and voice is on CDMA. If can get into signal settings may be a way to lock the voice section in. It is not on LTE. Verizon has had the two linked since TBolt. Others have had a problem doing this. Has to be able to do dual band at same time. Also shouldn't get LTE at all if not in T-Mobile AWS area.
Unless T-Mobile rolls out voLTE and the M8 is compatible, the VZW M8 won't work for both call/sms and LTE data simultaneously. The other solution would be figuring out a new mode that allows LTE and GSM/UMTS to work together, maybe a software update will do that, but something tells me VZW isn't running to make our lives easier in this regard (Unless they start offering international 4G LTE roaming, then they'll have to fix this issue - and that might be on the horizon as this is the first VZW phone to have LTE bands that VZW doesn't use nor has any plans to use, such band 3 1800MHz)

I am knocking every door to find the answer for this question.. Can anyone help

Is there anyone who can answer my query. I bought a samsung galaxy note 3 sm n900p from eBay India. Everything is working fine but the main thing calls are not working properly.. The other person can't hear my voice 4 out iof 5 times. Signal getting cut all of a sudden to no service available and in the next second and then again gets the signal. What should I do. I tried factory reset, cache partition wipe and what not but nothing worked. Can anyone help. I like the device like anything. Please help. Device hardware is working wonderful. No problem in it
Hm, how do you know that device hardware work wonderful? I'd rather think the issue is in GSM receiver and go to some service to check it.
Service center people says that it's a foreign model and they won't help me with that

I spoke to a smartphone repairer who has great experience about what I am facing about signal strength. I clearly told him that the best networks are not able to hold the strength and signal strength falling from - 89 dbm from 0 dbm at once and gaining again.
He said this is a problem with sm 900p sprint lte model and it's a bad choice on my part. That I made a mistake by buying it. I asked is there any way I can get it repaired and he said it's not a problem in hardware or software but compatibility in India.
Should I just take his word as final or should try better sources?

I repair cellphones and sell Sprint, ATT, Verizon, and T-Mobile phones in the USA. That being said, I have to know the differences about these networks. For example, ATT, and T-Mobile use something that is called GSM. It's a method of how your phone connects to the network. GSM is used in the majority of world.
Sprint and Verizon on the other hand use a different radio technology called CDMA. It is completely different than GSM. CDMA uses different frequency bands to communicate. They take completely different hardware.
Now where things get really specific and technical, every carrier in the US have to be regulated by our government (the FCC). Sprint purchases certain frequency bands from the government to use for their network. While the other companies(ATT &Verizon) have their different frequency bands "purchased" by the FCC.
For example, imagine you had walkie talkies. You can pick any channel you'd like, but they both have be on the same frequencies (channels) to communicate with the other walkie talkie.
Now apply that analogy to smart phones specifically made for Sprint. In the baseband, your processor firmware enables which frequencies are accessible and which are not. So if you have a note 4 for Sprint (CDMA) trying to run on GSM, your phone is not configured to read the GSM frequencies you need for your carrier. There are methods in XDA on how to enable these frequencies receive the bands you need to make your phone work normally, but keep in mind that they are outdated and may not work on your phone depending on your proccessor.
I'm experiencing something similar as well, I unlocked my sprint S5 but can only get 3g because of hardware incompatibility.

My data turns off while in a call

Using stock m9. Data 4g or other turns itself off when I start dialing and reconnects after I complete my call. Very frustrating when I need to search something while talking. Is there a setting I'm missing? Has anyone else noticed this?

Probably, you are missing VoLTE. Without this technology when phone using 4g and receiving call, it jumps to wcdma (3G) to get call, but drops mobile Internet in this moment.
To get everything working need:
- Mobile operator, who supports VoLTE
- Phone. Mate 9 supports VoLTE on paper, but not in all roms and not in all regions. For example, owner is living in USA, but has Mate 9 with chinese Rom -> no VoLTE.
You will have to enable VoLTE in order to get rid of the trouble.
I have the same issue also. I own the dual SIM variant and use one card for calling and the other one for mobile internet. Whenever I start a call the mobile data connection is stopping. I tried to enable VoLTE with no success.

In the latest C432 roms Huawei has removed the possibility to enable VOLTE for Vodafone Italy.
This possibility was present only in the first 2 update.

This is other case. If you are using one card for calling only, and second card for mobile internet only - you can't get call and mobile data together, cause Mate 9/Mate 9 Pro are DSDS phones (dual SIM dual standby)
To get what you want need have DSDA phone (dual SIM dual active). They are with two independent radio modules. Honor 8 for example.
Dsds phone has only one radio module but uses interchange method of work. On physical level it jumps from first sim to second then gets back to first. If you are in call with first sim, phone does not go to second -> no internet.
