[Help] TouchWiz Lag - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

So I am contemplating whether I should purchase the S7 or hold out for the HTC 10.
I owned the S6E and sold it 5 months in mainly due to the fact that Touchwiz showed it's true face; became laggy as hell. In addition, battery life was not great either and trying to get a Custom ROM/root on an Exynos phone while keeping KNOX in tact for Android/Samsung Pay (and warranty as a matter of fact, but let's not get into that).. good luck.
I know that the S7 has improved massively on the battery front, however, how does it compare to the S6 with regards to the TouchWiz lag? My S6E was quite smooth until a few months in, and then became absolutely unbearable; factory resetting, etc, etc is not the solution to this.
I was wondering, if I were to go with the S7, root it without caring about KNOX, would I be able to get down to the bottom of what causes this lag?
Hope this makes sense
Thanks

If the variant you are getting is the exynos version. Then its not a problem, i had my s7e for over 3 weeks. And it runs just as fast as day one, and with the auto restart feature, you never have to deal with the jank that comes with android after a long up time. I've seen the s6 on 5.1.1, and it didnt need months to slow down, probably weeks. But even it after MM update it pretty much became as smooth as the s7

I have the Exynos version. I don't actually hate TouchWiz. I'm shocked. I have a Tab S and freaking hate it. But it isn't too bad on this phone. Plus no lag. I did disable any and every Samsung App that I could.

I have the Exynos version as well and do not experience any lag. IMO, the S7 is the phone the beat this year. I love it!

Can I use Samsung Pay/Android Pay if KNOX is tripped? (assuming I've gone back to stock TW with no root, etc. after tripping it)

No once know is tripped Samsung pay won't work.. im unsure about android pay thought

Exynos version here, so far no issues with speed. This is by far the fastest phone I've used so far. Maybe you need to explain a bit more about exactly what you mean by "lag", this would help others to determine if they are seeing any of the same symptoms.
I upgraded from a Z3 and while I loved the close to stock UI, I am actually digging this version of TouchWiz more.

This sounds to me more about how Lollipop ran. More than one device I had on Lollipop would develop lag and it was a nexus. MM seems to have fixed most of the issues with lag on LP. Plus, the S7 has 4GB of RAM, that helps.

Please note I also had installed MM Beta when I had it, but that didn't seem to help much with the lag department.
When I say lag I mean, speed to do anything really. From launching applications, switching, to responding to the capacitive keyboard presses, typing on keyboard, etc.

There's no lag on my T-Mobile snapdragon S7 (yet, at least).

[Q] S6 recommendation from a TouchWiz hater?

Hi guys,
I started my Android journey with the S3, then went for HTC M7 as I realised I really didn't like TouchWiz and was running CM on my S3 for most of its lifespan.
I then saw the S5 and thought man I really need a good camera after the M7 disappointment, but I HATED that phone!
People didn't seem to agree but I'm an ultra-nerd and the overall lag in the phone (due to TouchWiz) got under my skin so bad, like I was installing custom apps to replace things like the ridiculously slow Gallery, even found my Camera took too long to open sometimes. Generally through owning the phone I remember noticing so many little stutters of lag and sometimes outright freezing for a second or so. I even thought there was an issue until I compared with three of my friends phones and found them all the same.
On top of that, I really hate the look of TouchWiz (haven't seen Lollipop yet), and have always been an AOSP purist - but didn't want a ROM with any issues and just wanted a rooted factory phone.
Then I bought the Oneplus One and am in LOVE with this device, I really like the bigger screen, I love the speed and OxygenOS Lollipop is wonderful, good battery and again AOSP Lollipop just looks amazing to me.
Unfortunately, the only thing that I can't stand is the camera - it's good, but not great.
The S6 is now released and akin to what happened last year I've got an itch to spring for it given the quality camera, and hearing that all TouchWiz lag has now disappeared from the phone.
I know it's not been out long and don't know if anyone has even really had a chance to play but I was wondering if anyone who hates TouchWiz has decided to use the phone and if so why, and if they have used it whether they are happy with the purchase or not!
Also I'm half tempted to wait for the Note 5 because I enjoy the bigger screen size - but I've got a few holidays coming up and really want a decent camera to take with me!
Cheers

I too was in the same boat - I love phablets and the note series was ideal for me but I held off both the Note 3 and Note 4 because the software and UI made me vomit when I tried it. I was anxious for the same reason when trying out the galaxy s6 but I'm happy to say that it's perfectly good so far.
Sure, it's still got some colorful quirks and the ringtones are still the same old cheesy tunes, but it's fast, looks clean and is functional with minimum bloat. It's actually a pleasure to use. It's a great start for Samsung and it'll only get better down the line.
Stock android remains my favorite but if I were to give it a 100, I'd give the S6 UI an 80 and the older ones a 0. Just compare the S6 and Note 4 side-by-side and you'll instantly notice the difference.
Damn that's a pretty good endorsement! I'll go check if any of my local stores have a working model, and I'll be sure to do the side by side!

Do you have any regrets with this phone?

I am a bit skeptical of Samsung as they come out with phones too frequent which could mean that their hardware and software are really not meant to last two years of the contract.
So has anyone had any regrets with this phone yet? I was also looking at M9 as well but the edge looks alot sleeker.
None at all! The only problem is it's so Good I don't need to root! Haha
No regrets here. Came from the M8, which was a great phone, but this phone still blows me away. Best device that I've ever owned!
Had an issue with battery not lasting on stock, but since I flashed Sac's rom, battery has been great.
Yea that was another thing I read that with lollipop that the battery doesnt last long. So it is fixed with a custom rom?
I do have huge regrets, I came from my N5 and this phone has been nothing but slow, laggy, and full of bugs. I am returning it and going back to my N5 which is faster, smoother and snappier than this Flagship device. I was really excited before i bought it, i honestly believed all the specs and hardware were going to give me the best experience available. This whole memory issue is driving me nuts, i'm constatly running between 88-90%+ RAM Usage. I can't open applications or hit home button without getting desktop redraws, or looooong processing time, unlocking the phone takes forever, hitting the recent app takes forever, it overheats when charging, it overheats when using GPS, it overheats when I look at it haha.
Anyways, i'm going back to the N5, but not sure what else to upgrade to, any ideas?
No regrets here, runs great on rooted sac23 ROM. I love it. As for the lag that some are experiencing, that's supposed to be fixed in the next update 5.1.1
I regret getting the phone through Sprint.
The developers seem to be completely ignoring the 920P varient. Except for Sac23 and Ktoonsez, bless them.

Sprint has always been the black sheep of the developer world. Takes forever to get any kind of OTAs so we're always behind the other carriers.
I have the edge and the m9. Screen and camera are the best out. Hate touchwiz. The phone definitely lags at times but I still think it's a solid phone.
M9 has better speakers and software plus soff.
No regrets here but I might if the rumors are true and Samsung releases the S7 this year.
I also have a Nexus 5 & a Note 4 (910C) and my S6E is my favorite.

Note Edge Root Soon?

So, I have Had my AT&T Note edge since around April 2015. When I first Got the phone I was very happy with the new innovation of the edge screen and found it quite useful. Before, I had the Note 2 and I was in love with it, I had many different roms and dev's are still coming out with new roms for it and the only reason I got the new phone is because the screen cracked and I did not want to pay another 150$'s for a phone that was worth less than that on eBay.
Since receiving my note edge I have found nothing but problems with it (obviously after honeymoon period with the edge screen, lol). The battery life is abysmal at best, the screen transitions are slow and tedious at times, sometimes I have to launch the task manager and clean the apps(which that in enough itself is a challenge to get to launch), even if I am only using 20% of my memory. To put a little perspective on this, I have been rooting/jail breaking phones since the first iPhone came out back in 2007 and I have also switched out hardware on phones so I do know what I am doing and I realized when I bought the phone that it may be a while till a decent root/rom came out for the phone but honestly not one root or one rom for the AT&T note edge has come out.
I bought the phone knowing I would have to wait for a root/rom but I did not expect stock to be so terrible. Even after the lollipop update, the phone may have gotten a little worse, to the point where sometimes my screen will stay black when I get a phone call then when the phone almost stops ringing the screen will come on and I can then answer (most of the time). To say I am disappointed in Samsung would be an understatement. Mind you, I fell in love with my note 2 and had it until it was non functioning anymore and more expensive to fix than replace. I have nothing but praise for Samsung but they really let me down with this phone.
I have taken all the steps I can think of to increase performance even to the point of just wiping it clean and starting from scratch and it's still no where close to the performance of my note 2
All this is to ask if anyone out there can give me some suggestions of a phone that A) has the ability to be rooted B) has sufficient roms out there to test out and find a good one. Money is not a problem but I figured that this would be one of the best places to ask because I am sure all you note edge fanboys and girls were looking at other phones before you decided on the note edge and I am sure there are other people like me who probably had too high of expectations for the note edge.
I would also consider staying with the edge if the root/rom would come out soon, but I honestly don't see that happening in the near future.
Also one last thing, I am not opposed to any brand or model I just prefer a 5" screen or bigger. Also, I have checked out the Neptune Suite which looks incredible. unfortunately, I can't post a link but just search it and you'll find it.
You can get root. It's just tough. The recommended way (depending on your variant) is to get CWM and root through recovery then flash whatever recovery you want to use. For me its TWRP. The above method works on my SM-N915G.
One thing I have seen and am a bit butt hurt by is the significant downturn on custom roms for this device, or at least for my variant. The note 4 has had heaps of dev work however this beauty of a phone has been neglected. More than likely die to uptake. I just hope that they bring out an edge 2 this year and that is widely taken up, so we can get some damn customisation. I hate this 5.0.1 touch wiz rom. I have constant lag issues and its just not on. However I digress. It's a beast of a phone. Just don't expect to many roms available seeing as it is hitting end of life i.e. new version coming soon

I completely agree with you that the note edge is a beast. It has all the features I was looking for in a phone EXCEPT the fact that the rooting is a mission and when you're finally done, there is little to no reward. I would have rooted a while ago but the root seems fishy at best and the temp root... well, its a temp root, lol. I miss my note 2 just for the pure simple fact that they had every single rom you could think of for that thing, hell, I would even switch to the note 4 if it was more heavily supported. Honestly, I am just saddened by AT&T's choice to lock everything and Samsung's horrific TouchWiz UI. We all know its awful. I am a die hard samsung fanboy but man, they are letting the ball drop. like the note 5, possible no removable back? What is this HTC?! I hope AT&T/Samsung realize that locking the bootloader is a pointless exercise. What modder out there ever returns their stuff for warranty?! Enough of the rant. I am most likely going to be switching to T-mobile by the end of this year(for other reasons than the phone) and was wondering if there is a better options than the note edge coming soon?

also, from everything I have read, there is no secure root for the SM-N915A. I could be wrong but I don't think so unfortunately

There is ROOT, for an SM-N915A but you have to be on kitkat and NOT lollipop. Also root for this device is "TEMP" and not permanent, after a reboot, you loose root.

That's the problem, If it was a perm root. I wouldn't be so negative about this phone but since its only Temp. I feel like I kind of got cheated with this phone. It's powerful but a hog with its power, its got a great display but mainly because of the edge, and a nice size battery that, again, gets killed by the display(even at low brightness) I might have just got a lemon from the start, its happened before. I just wish that rooting this phone was easier and more satisfying than "oh sweet, I was able to root my phone! Better not restart and better be okay with the non existent roms out for it right now!"
More than likely because when Samsung released this model, they initially said that they were going to drop only 1000 units so as to "test the market waters" for the device. So sad to see because she really is a beaut. I won't be moving to a Note 4, I have a new phone owed to me by my carrier this month, so I will be waiting to see what this years Note/Note Edge offering is and I will make the change then, Fingers crossed they do run with the Note Edge design. Also too, if they follow suit with their Note lines of phone as they have with Their Galaxy S line (no expandable memory, no removable back plate) I will not be buying Samsung again. Other than the lengthy feature set for the Note Edge, the fact that they have expandable memory was the tipping point for me. Failing that I will be going elsewhere from now on. Sad to say it, but Samsung is following in Apples footsteps by telling the consumer what they can and cannot do with a device that they choose to buy.

Memory management too aggressive?

Doesn't feel like a '4gb ram' phone haha. Giving me flashbacks of my past experience with huawei stuff tbh lol. Switching between a few apps (especially if that includes a game) leads to refreshes. Maybe i've just been spoiled by pixel and op3, but I feel like this could be handled better. Wonder if there are any settings I can tweak without root to improve this.
SD835 version.

If you had the Exynos variant you could root, install TWRP and custom ROMs.
I've been spoiled with my S4, it being totally unlocked, never having blown the Knox fuse. I'm running into the same exact memory related issues I was with the S4, even though it has double the memory. It happens more often with the S8 than my old S4, though the S8 does recover faster, and is easier to clean up.
I'll hold off until the Pixel 2 comes out, and then probably get one of those or switch to an international version S8.
With the stock software, the Snapdragon S8 certainly does not have the "feel" of 4 years of advancement.

User experience, stability and lag overtime

I'm looking to buy the s8+ or the XZP n a few days.
Just to be clear, I'm not a Sony fanboy or a Samsung hater in any way.
As a Galaxy user since 2012, I know Touchwiz and all of its lag.
I'm disappointed in the performance in day to day use and especially after a few months of owning the device.
I used the devices stock for the first year because of warranty, but even with wiping every 2 months, rooting, disabling and uninstalling a lot of system apps, tinkering with clock speeds and installing custom kernels, the device would still lag in light day to day tasks.
I've used more Galaxy devices and although Samsung improved Touchwiz every time, i have a feeling that many phones are faster, more fluid and less laggy than Samsung devices.
As I'm looking for a new device (currently using S6 Edge+), I'm asking all the kind and polite people here who use their phone A LOT to share their honest views on using the device daily.
If anyone has had any experience with the XZP versus the S8+, that would be very helpful as well.
It's just not easy to spend ~$1050 (in my country) for a phone that will lag as the older devices, while the XZP is a cheaper and IMHO faster alternative.
Gs6+ was just a mess , after S7 edge Samsung phones aren't lagging anymore. I'm using exynos version of gs8+ and it's super smooth. Not a fan of Sony phones anymore so can't tell you about that

Had mine since day one, snapdragon variant. The only lag I've noticed is when I installed one of the Bye Bixby apps, other than that I'm using TW and smooth as butter - IMHO. I have not had a single reboot on it and and I'm using quite a few hacks, battery life is the best I've ever had - especially for a stock kernel. I planned on using my Nexus 6, rooted with Pure Nexus once in awhile but haven't got it out except to update the rom. The only thing I was worried about was the tall, skinny screen but I love it now.
If anyone else wants to share their opinion, you're most welcome to do so.
Hi, at first I have experienced some occasional lags (mostly when swiping for app drawer), usually when i wanted to enter the app drawer after some inactivity time - after that first "laggy enter", the other times i have swiped it, it was good. However, after around one month (and some updates) it became better. I think every update helped with that. I have the phone from preorder (20th april), so its possible that the software was not excellent from the first day.
The important thing is, now its absolutely butter smooth, even while having many apps and almost full memory. I believe that if you buy the phone today and immediately do all the updates, it will be totally smooth without any lag. With new phone i copy my sms (7000+ messages) and while all previous phones were lagging while scrolling through those messages, S8+ has no issue here.
I haven't seen any lag in 3 months it runs buttery smooth and I'm loving and ha s8 plus has crazy battery life u gonna love it
