Using apps that require root - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

I'm considering getting the s7, but after hearing about the bootloader issue I had a few questions. I use Titanium backup, Pandora cracked, and lux, and I was wondering how being unable to root has affected anyone else?

But if the international version doesn't have the hardware for the US, he's ****ed. And I've heard VoLTE and B12 doesn't work on the international version.

International isn't an option. Need to get it thru tmobile for the monthly payments.

How would I know what international version to get that will work with my Tmobile US service?

Just make sure it has the correct LTE bands for the USA which I'm pretty sure all the international phones have the same bands. I use a 930F on ATT and it works great!

How would I know what bands I would need? I have Tmobile, could someone help me find the right version?

What is the unlocked G920T?

Best Buy sells an unlocked version of the G920T - http://goo.gl/bk4ukE
It's not T-Mobile. It's unlocked and has no carrier bloat - just the usual Samsung stuff. It shows "4G" for LTE. (Edit: Correction - after the OTA referenced below, it shows H+ and LTE)
It came with 5.1.1 out of the box, build ending in COG3.
It had a 272mb software update immediately available that took it up to the build ending in COK1 and added the Android Security Patch Level line showing 2015-11-01.
Just curious how this model fits into the other unlocked models (f, i, etc.). Did Samsung simply take the T-Mobile model and sell a variant unlocked with no T-Mobile influence?
Sorry to bump this but I'm seeing a few more of these in the wild now and trying to figure it out. It's gotta have the same internals as the T-Mobile variant since the model number is the same, I'm assuming anyway? The full model is SM-G920TZKAX, but the packaging and phone just shorten it to T. The T-Mobile model is SM-G920TZDATMB. I guess knowing what the letters after G920T mean would be helpful.
From what I've read it appears to be a unlocked version of the T-Mobile variant. Can't find much information about it.
I purchased the unlocked version from Best Buy yesterday for $450. Rooted it and could not be happier.

What method did you use? I'm concerned about doing any mods due to not having the right software to flash back to (which we don't have right?).
I used the follow root method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/galaxy-s6-root-5-1-1-variants-t3147074
As for going back to stock, you can always use smart switch, or ODIN back to stock rom.

I just bought this yesterday as an open box for $380. I was worried that is wouldn't have LTE band 17 for AT&T as the normal 920T is listed as missing this band. The Best Buy version does have band 17 and I'm connected on it now. Very happy with the phone so far.

you can also see the specs for the phone on Samsung's website. http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SM-G920TZKAXAR
4G FDD LTE: B1(2100), B2(1900),B3(1800),B4 (AWS),B5(850),B7(2600),B12(700),B17(700),B20(800)
Firmware?
Love the phone with no carrier bloatware, would have preferred 64GB but I can make due. I would like to root it but not without having factory firmware to fall back on. Even though it's a 920T it's has no T-Mobile apps so I'm pretty sure I can't load a T-Mobile ROM on it. If anyone runs across formware for a SM-G920TZKAXAR PLEASE let us know. TIA
Does this work with Samsung Pay?
Has anyone tried getting this to work with Samsung Pay? I saw on a Slickdeals thread that it will not work ... would love confirmation.
Also, and I know this is a very, very slight chance anyone will know this, but -- will this work with my old, granfathered T-Zones data plan?

Did last year's snapdragon S7 ever get root? The S7 got what we called ENGBOOT root. Which was not really full functioning root. It required you to flash a Samsung created engineering kernel, that is purposely unstable, but is designed to help Samsung repair shops fix corrupt devices.
With some tweaking root was achieved, but the bootloader stayed locked. And the performance was so degraded by the engineering kernel MOST people went back to stock and never used root.
Sadly rooting and ROMing most phones is going away. Especially now that Google is providing an easy way for developers to turn off access to an app if the user is rooted. Right now even if you have root you can't use Netflix, Samsung Pay, Android Pay, among many others.
If you want root still I'd look at a 1+ or the Essential phone or the international model if this phone. Otherwise you are probably out of luck.

Yes.
I have been using AdClear for a while now and it works great including in YouTube. The development team has an xda thread that has the downloads and a bunch of great info. Just search xda.
I use BK Package Disabler to freeze apps. It lets you freeze individual processes in apps as well which is great for blocking only certain features of apps. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.packagedisabler
For making a back to restore I actually like Samsung's Smart Switch. Works great to backup your phone to a computer.
Also in Developer settings you can manually address your DPI, and over in the S8 International threads there is a list of about 40+ fonts that can be installed.

This may seem like a stupid question, and I am assuming the answer is no, but does flashing an official firmware lock it to that carrier ?

T-Mobile variant clarification

After reading a few threads, it would seem that there is an msmtool for the tmobile variant now but still no method for root? I'm not counting the method to convert to international version.
Do I have this all correct or am I missing something?

The T-Mobile MSM tool is to revert back to the T-Mobile firmware. If you use the MSM tool to convert from the T-Mobile version to the international version, you can root but you must be SIM unlocked prior to converting to the international version.

Right I had mentioned that in my post, but I'm a little apprehensive to try it because I don't want to have issues with lte or wifi calling.

I haven't been able to at all

TMO OnePlus 7 Pro

So... I have sim unlock, received bootloader unlock code from one plus... now what? From what I have read, I am able to root the stock firmware with Magisk.
If I want to go the custom rom route, it looks like a majority of the roms are based on international version and I need to convert to international first.
I did hear the TMO firmware is optimized for their Network for volte and wifi calling, so if I do change to international, what will be the advantages/disadvantages?
Sent from my GM1915 using Tapatalk
I'm using the int version of the OP7P with a TMO US Sim and cannot report any problems, VoLTE and VoWifi do work.
I think @joemossjr found there may be a LTE band priority difference between international and T-Mobile specific ROMs. TBH, I stick to an official T-Mobile ROM primarily because I want to get the best possible performance on T-Mobile's network.
I'm on T-Mobile, but have a rooted international rom installed. VoLTE and VoWifi ALWAYS work without issues.

So what's the advantage for a rooted international rom vs a rooted tmo rom?
My understanding is that most of the custom ROMs available are based off that version, but if I stay stock and rooted, other than updates coming faster, would there be any reason to do the conversion?

Well, the international rom comes straight from oneplus, so it won't be over bloated with T-Mobile background apps. Won't have the magneta boot screen. Of course these things can be delt with in a rooted tmobile rom version. So mainly quicker updates (fixes).
Thanks for the feedback. I know the international version is way more popular than tmo, so the conversion is inevitable. Maybe someone will be able to work some magic and be able to help us figure out what the tmo optimizations are and have some kind of patch we can zip with twrp.

That would be awesome! But yeah, I'd like to know if there's a huge difference in the mobile data or whatever compared to the T-Mobile rom as well.
Anyone know? I'm just wondering if the only advantage using the T-Mobile rom over the International one is better Volte and Vowifi? Or are they pretty much the same?
Using the int version (bought it to avoid the unlock and reflash hassl, return the TMO OP7P.to the TMO shop after I found out after having asked when buying) with US and DE TMO sims, I did not find any issues. The OP7P finally supports VoLTE and VoWiFi with German TMO which the OP6 did not.
The only thing I've noticed so far running International on T-Mobile is a couple times I've lost signal completely and I'll get two SIM card symbols in my staus bar until I reboot. Otherwise it's been perfect.
I'm on TMO, bootloader unlock, rooted with twrp installed, for some reasons i can't install adaway it says not enough storage. I have plenty of storage like 230G. Can't find any answer as to why.
