I'm unrooted and have been using BlockThis! to filter ads, however my mobile service provider (Three UK) has been blocking me for tethering.
Historically they have also always blocked me when I've used another app, Search By Image (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.searchbyimage.app), as for some reason they think this is tethering as well.
Is there a non-root method for blocking ads that doesn't involve sending/receiving data in a way that appears to be tethering?
Did you try adguard? I use it and it works well.

No, not yet, but it works on the same principle doesn't it? I'll give it a try anyway.

Any ideas what it does? It runs as a service com.htc.tetheringguard
Just installed the OTA update and noticed this. If you stop the service it doesnt reload unless you open the mobile hotspot app. Think the free hotspot block can be removed by removing the service? That seems way too easy...

It certainly does seem too easy. Brilliant solution if it works though.
Easy test, turn it off, try to use another tethering app.
I am debating between doing and not doing the update because I like the free WiFi hotspot; I can be cheap
Can someone with the update try it?
I tried freezing it with titanium backup Pro, but it just rendered the mobile hotspot inoperable.

If you're already rooted you might as well just use the wireless tether app, or the one built into cm7.

4G as long as you have 4G available. If you use this version, make sure you select the option in settings for HTC related to the LAN.

Hey guys anyone know some good settings for android Wi-Fi tether 3.1 to work on the charge..
I saw somewhere to use fascinate as the device profile and change to digital for Samsung, but that has never worked for on any 3.1 versions, so Ive used 2.0.7 since I found Wi-Fi tether...
If anybody could help me I would greatly appreciate it thanks

Uncheck wifi driver reload and choose the Droid Charge profile. Make sure you uncheck that box though, otherwise you'll have to reboot to get wifi back.

One big advantage I see is that the new version is in the Play Store, so no more bother with sideloading. It'll autoupdate this way as well.
So Verizon is allowing us to download that version? Sounds fishy don't you think?

I understand Play Store is Google. I had the impression that carriers can block certain apps from appearing in the Play Store. When I was on sprint they blocked wireless tether app. I'm probably wrong about Verizon.

Google had pretty much blocked all tethering apps from the Market for a while, but they've started popping back up again. Not sure why the change in policy, unless they've just decided to stop letting the carriers dictate their internal policies.

Never really understood why google would be behind removing certain apps, yet you google the app apk and easily download it.

I love wifi tether with unlimited data...it's just like being hooked up to HSD at home.
FoxFi works fine for me. Don't have to deal with rebooting on the wifi tether app.

I use Wifi Tether and I don't have to reboot either. It's as simple as unchecking a box in the config. I don't trust FoxFi. Anything that uses the built in tethering is going to automatically be easier to detect than something like Wifi Tether or Open Garden.

Which check box? The wi-fi driver reload option? I'd love to be able to skip the reboot (on 3.1-beta11).

With just root can we use the wifi tether apk on the verizon SG3? If so, are there any special things that need done to make it work?
yeap, you should be able to. you just need to enable unknown sources under settings/security

what app are you using? i used to use Wugfresh on my droidx.
I just posted in the General form about this. My recommendation is to use a 3rd party app such as Wifi Widget, that will turn on the built in wifi tethering app without checking for account status. Verizon might change this in the future but it is work much better for me than 3rd party wifi tether apps.
Has anyone seen a way to enable tethering via Bluetooth (bypassing the check for subscription)?
When I'm out and about I like to have my tablet connected to my phone over bluetooth. However, with my new S3 it asks me to subscribe to a tethering plan when I try checking the box to share my phones internet connection over bluetooth.
I'm stock, rooted and on a Verizon capped data plan (not the share everything plan)
Anyone?

Eric, can you provide a link to a Wifi Widget app that will turn on the built in tethering capability on my VZW SGS3? I tried a couple and they didn't seem to work.
Thanks!

bond32, thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately I don't really like the Fattin widgets icon. Tethering Widget also seems to work and I like it's 1x1 icon better. I had forgotten that I was using it on my Samsung Fascinate running CM10 while my SGS3 was getting fixed.

There are built in blocks for tethering on the verizon phone and root is not enough, some files would need altered. That said, usb tether might be viable until s-off is achieved and we can truly alter the phones. I havent gotten mine yet but I havent seen anyone else confirming or denying usb tethering if you want to give that a try with a few different apps and report back?
See here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699200
Please try the latest suggestion posted - use titanium backup to freeze tethering guard and then try wifitether from code.Google.com

I thought, for some reason, you needed root access for the PIA app. I could be completely wrong.
Another option, follow this guide.

I've got two VPN's i'm using regularly. I use the native IPSEC VPN, and use OpenVPN via a static openvpn binary, busybox and the OpenVPN Settings app. Both are working very well. Running on s-offed/rooted stock.
