Am a Non-conformist, I don't try to follow the herd's travels in getting the Best looking customizing on my phone. I became really frustrated with my G2 over the past few days and I'll tell you why .
The G2 is the only phone that I have to go through different hoops in order to hack it to be able to install a custom ROM on it ! After all, the whole idea is to be able to customize it to begin with with some fancy screens and new apps. Every time a new ROM comes out, were all racing to get it installed and working on our devices and were left with a huge mess. Can you honestly remember what ROM you installed last week and have you forgotten what procedures to take before installing your New fancy Rom over it ?
Every time I come here and look at the ROMS being worked on, it seems that you have to follow that developers procedures in order to get it working and guess what, if you BRICK it, it's your own damn fault ! Ain't no one here to blame you for trying out that new fancy Rom, right !
What got me worked up was this, I received a picture from someone via mms and after previewing it on my G2, it closed the thread and took me to my list of sms threads and I still can't figure out how to save the damn picture to my phone !
Maybe, I just overlooked something and maybe I installed an app from the market that changed some small aspect regarding sms and mss messaging, I don't know and frankly, I dislike coming to any forum and having my intelligence questioned by some smart ass nerd who knows more then I do, only because he has the information to fix my problem but is not willing to share the solution until he makes himself Glorified.
Developers are indeed SMART and very SKILLED at what they do but it just seems to me that all it takes is just 1 individual to bring down the Fame and Glory because this 1 individual fails to follow instructions.
How about let's change all this to an idea I have.
An individual comes here with a NEW factory carrier phone, he wants to have it customized his way, He's willing to pay a certain developer to cook a BASE ROM, let's say $25.00 dollars and he likes it, Now he wants certain apps that make it work, let's say he's willing to pay $ 5.00 to 10.00 at the very least, depending on the apps usage. NOW, this NEW owner has his own phone customized to his liking, He's happy as a clam, right ? Maybe and maybe not.
Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas like this? Is it worth trying here ?
If developers had the time to handle your phone the amount of money you are suggesting would probably not buy that time. Also I think it is customary here to take donations and not payment for services. Sorry about your bad experience. Not all of the smart people here are so unrefined as the ones you encountered. Try to keep a cool head. Everything that happens to your phone after the instant it is rooted is ultimately YOUR PROBLEM, like it or not, and that goes for everybody, including smarty pants geeks! If your not a paid member you might want to consider becoming one. If you're new around here it probably couldn't help to have something going for you. If you think you got off on the wrong foot with somebody, PM them a well thought out apology, you might make a friend and get the help you need. Just a thought.
Hi,
I am at point where I would be buying a new mobile phone. I don't have budget problem, but I am looking from the point where I'll be able to use my phone as development device.
I have shortlisted some options:
Nexus S: This seems to me an idle device for development. It also has NFC. You have early access to the android flavors. But with dual core processor phone in the market, I not sure if this a good choice.
Samsung Galaxy s 2: The phone is expensive, but has many feature(except for NFC ). Do you think this can be a good device considering future versions of android might be out by November-December(speculating)
Wait for another device: Wait for a device. But then everything can't be obtained in a single device. How long will I wait?
HTC Sensation: Not much info about it.
Any other device
I seem to prefer device with NFC and dual core(may be because it a future ready).
Really confused. Just looking for a device that can be used for development on current and future flavors of Android.
Also I have read about rooting a device. Not sure if this is a proper question, but if someone roots a device can the person explore the full capabilities of the device(provided the rooting is proper).
I prefer not to wait for another device and I am confused between Nexus S and Galaxy S 2.
Please give you opinion about my choice or some other device that I should consider.
Thanks
Prerak Desai
if you need a phone for development, first choose your target audience.
i dont think a vast majority of the people will be upgrading too soon to dual core...
now if u wanna push boundaries with your programming, go ahead with the latest...
but its good to have a phone that a greater percentage of the people have...
also, do consider the major portion of people are on android 2.2 and 2.1 (more than 85% as on google site)...
think from a developer pov, not a user...
Thanks HyprGeek for the reply. Seems to give me a point or two to think about.
But don't you think if I buy what majority are buying today, then in about a month time something new will come up and the crowd will start moving towards it. Then i'll be stuck with old device.
I personally feel you need have something(especially electronics device) that arefuture ready so that you don't regret your decision in a short time.
What do you think from a general point of view, which device I should consider?
Thanks,
Prerak Desai
well, u need to detemine how big the "crowd" is...
http://developer.android.com/resources/dashboard/platform-versions.html
and i dont think computers/mobiles can ever be future ready...
I know most people already know but just want to shout out to the world to let whoever didn't know and by any luck saw my post.
If you are thinking of purchasing HTC-TD2 and have android system port or use android on this device. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE purchase something else. It's not fully working with current dev and by the time when it is complete, it will be slow as well therefore. Please think twice before you go out and purchase any phone with window system. I have a TD2 and wasn't happy about it when using the win O/S therefore I seek for android but up till now it seems to be faster to purchase a phone which is already build base on the system and with less hassle.
I have been trying and waiting to have my TD2 run on android and I end up losing important business call or not even know the phone was working.
I recently purchase a viewpad7 and found out how android should behave under normal development and there is nothing compare to the current existing development (not saying all the people who put effect to work on the project. Just pointing out how I felt about the system. Don't get me wrong as well, I appreciate whoever working on the system. I respect those developer)
There. I have point out the fact and hope whoever is seeking for a phone. Not to purchase TD2 and those who have purchase TD2 and waiting for porting android, please stop annoy all the developer and the forum by keep on asking or saying all the bad thing about the developer cos them put alot of effect and for me who don't know how to port the O/S, I purchase something which build mainly for Android. (I am still waiting but at least I don't fill junk message by asking is it ready or when will it be ready)
Hello anyone reading this message.
My name is gregory. I am like most of you pretty pissed about the behavior of canonical (at least if you followed the ubuntu edge fund campaign http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ubuntu-edge). What a lame way to make advertising. Of course, anyone with a bit of sense would smell the scam here, 32,000,000$ in a month? come on man!!! So here I am. I've been a flasholic for years and I think I came up with the idea of making my own cell phone about 3 years ago. fear, shyness and lack of funds made me drop the idea several time. But today we have the possibility to change the cell phone world together, thanx to canonical's lame way to advertise their OS. Basically here is my idea, Why not fund our own XDA phone? After all, many of us having problem or getting fed up with the slow updates of our phones are coming here to get things done. Most of us don't wait anymore for those big brands to update our devices. So why in the world are we waiting for them to build them. I've been around XDA for quite some times now and all I see here is a great mix of DEV. So correct me if i'm wrong. The dev on XDA are for most way faster and more reliable than the one at samsung, htc etc. the parts for the phones are all made in china for the most part, we all know some designers and the ubuntu edge crowfunding made it to 12,000,000 +. So here is my question to you people on XDA. Why don't we make our own phone the same way. Even 10,000,000 would be largely enough to make simply the best phone in the world. we could make a poll about each part and design in the phone, and i'm pretty sure the dev here would agree to make the device better. Not only because they will be pay for it, but because they love it. I am no business man, neither a develloper. I don't know code or anything in that matter. Now let me tell you my vision (and no i didn't take LSD for it)
imagines a phone with the latest specs like the edge. 128gb drive storage, 4gb ram, sapphire glass etc etc, it would be nice, but now imagine the same device with the XDA community back up, updates and corrections every 1 or 2 months, pushed straight to your phone without need of external program (kies, itunes or else... why is it call mobile phone if you need to have a computer to update it?), a minimum of 3 years updates, and of course, the ability to solve your problem here without having to talk with lame company commercials who would send your phone to korea just because they don't know anything about the product they sell. won't it be a dream? - more ideas are very welcome and that's why WE should do our own phone.
As I said, i'm not into the cell phone business, although I know some things about business in china, i'm no designer or dev, but i'm sure we could put up a pretty team from people here and make it happen. And when it's done, start a crowfunding. I know it would work because the name XDA alone stand for quality and improvement in our mobile world today. I have in mind that anyone willing to do that would succeed and I can't protect this kind of idea since i'm not the one who invent cell phone. but I also think the great thing with the xda community is that there is no lame boss or greedy stock sharers to decide what people should do or not. I'm hard working and if people think we should make it then i'm willing to work my ass, even travel (i'm from Paris, france not texas ) overseas to make this happen. here is the team i think we should put together to see this device built:
- people who knows the chinese technology market (where to buy and select company)
- DEV who knows about Android devellopment (maybe ubuntu or any other)
- designers ( let's try to make something more beautiful than the iphone )
- lawyers (I guess)
- commercials
any other ideas are welcome.
I opened this thread just to see your reactions on the subjects. it a little messy because i have so many things in my mind but feel free to argue, critisized, encourage, or just explain to us anything that comes in your mind. cheers

A search would have shown you this has already been talked about and "If" it ever did happen it would not be with any parts from China at all. The parts would have to be of the highest quality. But as I said this has already been talked about before.

hi,
I have been trying hard to accumulate how much it would cost to manufacture a brand new android smart phone. Currently I am searching for a phone motherboard prototype designer. I have contacted few motherboard manufacturers but they all told me that they can only customize my design and can not build from scratch.
little bit about me : Ok, I am not a scientist or engineer. I am just a mobile phone enthusiastic who want to build his own android phone. And please be assured, I am not a billionaire or a millionaire who have too much useless money just want to waste my inherited money in this process. Many would think I am a mad or its a day dream, but still I dont want to give up before even trying something.
So, if anybody interested in this project please contact me.
It seems my previous request seem too weird.
Anyway i want to put my all weird questions in this thread, so I dont fill xda forum with my venture.....
Suppose, I manage to source my own smart phone brand :
1. Do I have to take any kind legal permission from google for using Android in my phone?
2. Can I use CWM Recovery inbuilt in my Phone? Do they charge any money?
3. Will there be any xda developer who will be willing to design a Rom for my brand?
