Nexus 5 No signal help - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone. As the title says, I have a nexus 5 and for the past week and a half it has not been getting any signal. I would get a very very weak signal when I go outside sometimes. Not even enough to make a phone call. This had made me think it was a hardware error so I replaced the daughter-board, speakers, antenna cables, and even the back cover. Still no luck. I've formatted and flash stock so many times I can't count. I am truly at a loss at this point, which is why I have come here to ask for help. I had read through so many threads on here, yet nothing has solved my issue. So please, if anyone has an idea or a suggestion for me, please feel free to tell it to me. Thank you for any help offered. I will not be able to reply at the time I make this post because I have errands to run but, will return in an hour or so. Thank you guys for any help offered.
EDIT:
back now. while I was running my errand I noticed my phone randomly had full bars of LTE covereage and I received a few missed texts, voicemails and was able to even open a link that was sent to me. This was short lived and then it was still displaying full bars with LTE yet not being able to browse the internet or make calls. I have noticed while toying around with it that when I am on radio band 6 I seem to get *better* signal. As in any at all. I have no idea what it can be at this point. My IMEI is clean and it seems to be able to find the networks but not able to actually connect.

Will a radio stack upgrade help me?

I have an XDA1 (gonna get a blue angel when they get to the US for a reasonable price!). In the meantime I need to squeeze a few more months out of my xda.
I have a lot of problems with the phone. I will hit the talk key and nothing happens, and I have to hit end and try again, often multiple times, to place a call. Lately it's gotten worse, and now my phone will frequently go to "no service" and I have to reset the phone to get it back. This all happens while I'm in area's with exellent coverage.
So my question is: will a radio stack upgrade potentially solve some of my problems? Or is this more of a hardware issue?
Thank you in advance for your advise!
no one has any idea whether a radio stack upgrade will help at all? 54 views no replies
I had a similar problem as you.. a little less intense though.
I have an Imate (i.e. XDA II) running WM2003. I had no problems with the Send/End buttons or anything but a few weeks ago i noticed that the signal reception was degraded i.e. where i used to have low signal, i had no signal and where i had good signal i had a low siginal..
and it used to keep searching for a signal even after i had come out into areas with a good signal.
i did a hard reset and it solved the problem then i also performed a rom/radio upgrade just cause one was available and things seem to be fine now.
This tells me that my issue was softwre.. yours could also be something simiilar so try a hard reset first and if that doesnt work you can try a ROM/Radio update if one is available for you.
if none of that works then the only alternative will be a blue angel.. which is not so bad if you ask me
good luck.

[Q] Poor Signal / 3G / Best Buy Exchange Question

I'm not sure if it's just my phone in general, but there are more ocassions where the phone does not have full bar and many times, I end up with 1 or 2 bar. I'm in downtown right now and I only have 2 bar.
Even at my work, 3G works outside the building, but only 2G works in the room. My previous phone was fine both phone signal and 3G connection wise.
I don't think I've had a random boot (unless it randomly booted while I did not have the phone with me) but Nexus S disconnects 3G from time to time and phone signal is terrible.
Phone signal seems like it's just messed up on my phone at least. I never had a phone that fluctuate its signal so much like this. I'm looking at my phone now and I have 1 bar/Edge connection.
3G usually stays on but phone signal is terrible.
I bought this in early February so I need to know if I should consider getting exchanged because I signed 2 yr contract and I don't want to send it to Samsung for exchange after having horrible experience few years ago.
Please let me know. If anything, I'm going to go to the Best Buy tonight. Please let me know what I need to do/say/bring.
If I have full body protector on, I would have to take it off before and also set it back to factory default right? I didn't root or do anything illegal.
Thank you!
I got them exchanged quickly at Best Buy. No questions asked other than general 'what is wrong with the product?' before exchanging type of question.
Hopefully this one is better. I had no random boot or didn't seem to notice any of the bugs that were written on the bugs & wishlist, so hopefully this one does the same..

[Q] Any tips for signal issues?

Let me start by saying that I LOVE this phone and I really don't want to give it up.
I'm having issues where the signal drops out even if I'm sitting still, sometimes I'll lose both cell and data, others just cell, and sometimes it will show one bar, but as soon as I try to use the phone it'll drop to nothing. This is esp. bad at my office (where I spend A LOT of time). There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. I had a BB for 10 months in this same building with the same carrier (Mobilicity) and never had these issues.
This is the only thing that is bothering me about this phone right now. I'm running CM7.1RC1 currently.
Does anyone have any tips or fixes that might help this situation so that I don't try to sell the phone?

Issues with this phone?

I've read reports on the Internet of many users having issues with the Samsung Galaxy S3 such as small cracks appearing in the casing of the phone out of no where. Another thing is the weak signal strength this phone is known for. All the reports I could find were outdated and I really want to like this phone and purchase it.
I'd like to know if anyone knows if these problems have been fixed by Samsung.
Thanks in advance!

Signal has been top notch on mine.....Just as good as my wife's Rezound. Much much better then my GNEX!
Below 40% battery the signal becomes progressively weaker, noticably so, but no issues with calls, mostly manifests itself in data.
Otherwise, though, great signal. As I sit here in the middle of a state park far from anything. I travel a lot, neighborhood of a thousand interstate miles a week, and haven't dropped a call yet.
Device rocks, and haven't noticed any physical deterioration. As a smartphone you can't do any better on the market today in terms of quality, performance or features.
Worth getting the 32 gig model and slapping a 64 gig card in it. Nothing like having nearly 100 gigs of immediately available interactive storage.
4g lte is impressively fast.
one thing to remember is somebody will always have something to gripe about no matter what. that being said the s3 is by far the most solid device i have ever owned!
I've had two different Galaxy S3's on Verizon, and both have horrible data issues. Disconnects from data, and not gaining data back until reboot, slow data speeds when I have it, and signal bars constantly going from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 to 3 to 2 to 3 to 4 etc....
The second phone has never been rooted or modified, and the first one I tried everything I could think of. So many ROMs, modems, and flashes, and nothing worked. Other Verizon phones nearby work just fine. Just my experience though.

If you are referring to me then I was talking about the Galaxy S3. The OP was talking about the Galaxy S3 too.

I only got 2 bars where I am at, but looking at my family's other phones, they are about the same in reception (razr droid) . Now my dad who lives out of state, is telling me that when he calls me, it goes straight to voice mail (i dont see any indication that he called) , so this is an issue im trying to figure out, but I have a custom rom and kernal. So hard to say what the issue is for me ( I also got a crack on the screen already from slippage the 2nd day I owned the phone, but its very minimal), happened because I didn't have a case at the time.

The phone otherwise is awesome, Get some good protection for it, it is a must! I carry it in my pocket, but I do feel like if someone bumps up against my thigh that it could break.
I think people are to caught up in the bars. I never look at the bars. If my phone has 4G and I don't drop calls then there is no problems with the radio. I even get 4G in fringe areas where my GNEX did not.
Also, my wife's rezound can say she has 3 bars is a fringe areas but it still takes 10 minutes to
load a webpage.
Bars are a bunch of BS. Usage is what really counts.
Signal strength is what matters. I'm actually considering I might have a bad phone since it constantly loses data or drops to 1x in my apt, where the map shows full 4G coverage and my previous phone (Sprint) never had a single issue. Tested a friends Nexus and it had slow speeds but never lost a connection, and the Nexus is said to have really poor reception.

First question are you rooted? if not you should get an update from Verizon with a new modem. If so go to the modem link and down the newest modem and flash it via Odin. I flashed mine and it seems to help with the single problem I was having. Also when you look at the bars I was told that if your data is on the bars you see is for your data when it is off the bars you see is for your voice.

I am a bit confused by this advice going around. I am rooted, and unlocked. I checked for root access a few times before posting this, and I can still do everything I could before. I have manually received the OTA update, and don't notice a difference in my root capabilities. Are you saying something was supposed to break once I updated?

Poor conectivity

I have been having really bad connectivity recently. I have been having issues sending text messages, having slow data speeds, and really flaky reception. And all of these issues in places where I normally have no issues at all, in fact, I dont think I have ever really had issues like this before. Even when the phone says I have signal it still has issues some times. Being outdoors I dont seem to have issues sending text messages, but I still have poor data speeds. However, as soon as I went inside I had almost no reception to absolutely no reception at all. I know some of this could just be related to AT&T towers but my girlfriend is on AT&T too and hasn't had any issues sending messages, she has a "dumb phone" though if that matters. Other things I noticed as far as signal, it would sometimes have data connections shown, but sometimes it wouldn't show anything and under about phone it would say "mobile network is not connected".
I was on 11/4 CM10 when I started having the issues. Tried flashing a couple new MTD modems, checked APN settings, rebooted, wiped cache, airplane mode toggle, but none of that fixed anything. I did a one-click restore back to GB and wiped everything on my phone, internal SD too, then re-downloaded the 11/4 build and reflashed that. Everything seemed to be better for a while but then I noticed that I was having poor data speeds, issues sending messages, and poor signal again. Now I one-clicked back to stock GB again and didn't change anything and only downloaded a couple of apps that I use often to see if it was CM10 that was the issue, but once again I am finding myself with problems sending messages and very poor data speeds. Also, I notice sometimes that wifi connections seems to get dropped during usage and even though it still is connected it gives me errors.
At this point I'm not really sure what I should start looking into. Is is possible that the internal antenna is flaking out or got fried somehow? Or is it possible that it is on AT&T's side? That option seems most unlikely. I haven't dropped my phone or done anything recently that would seem like it would cause my phone to have these issues. Is there a way to test my phone to see if there is something internally messed up? Should I try getting a new sim? Anything else I can do to try and troubleshoot stuff? Any logs or anything you guys need to give me better ideas?
Thanks in advanced!
Edit: Well, in the process now of doing another full return to stock using GTG's method now. See if that makes any difference by the time I get cm10 installed again.
Edit 2: Decided to call the local AT&T store and apparently there had been a couple reports of connection problems but the lady seem a little surprised by how much I seemed to be effected. We'll see if they get that fixed soon and if that fixes my problems. Still having issues with wifi though...
Any ideas anyone? I'm don't know if the att tower is really sucking that much or if it's my phone. Beginning to think it's my phone more and more. Any suggestions please? I can't get an upgrade for another 2 months and this is getting really annoying not being able to use my phone as a phone..

Bumping this thread cause its happening again.
It did seem to be slightly related to the AT&T towers being down because it went away after a day or so after talking to the local store. However, they said the outage lasted only 3 hours and I had issues for a couple of days.
Anyways, yesterday I started having these exact same issues, called AT&T and they said towers seem fine. Asked them about it maybe being my SIM card and they said that 98% likely it wasn't my SIM card. I might go make them replace my SIM card since we pay them obscene amounts of money each month. As far as the phone, it still has Scotts 11/4 CM10 build with the 11/18 kernel patch. Only thing that really changed in the phone physically was I just purchased a 32gb class 10 memory card. The one thing that makes me think it might be my SIM card is there are darker spots in a couple of spots on the gold plating where it looks like it makes the contacts.
Still looking for advice though.
TLDR; super flaky reception, I go indoors in most places and I loose all connectivity. I normally have completely fine coverage everywhere. No issues up until about 3 weeks ago.
I have had ATT for 10 years and have never had good reception indoors. Only reason I am still with them is Verizon is practically a dead zone were I live.
I ran Scott's CM10 and now Liquidsmooth and didn't notice any increase or decrease in signal strength.

The thing is I've been running cm10 of some variety more or less since it's early life and I haven't had issues. It's just on these certain days for certain reasons I have no connectivity in certain places. Most every other days I have no problem getting an H+ data signal and no problem sending or receiving messages in these exact same spots.
I just don't understand these sudden random losses of connection.
Edit: What do you know. Phone is back to normal functioning today. This is wierd...
