Questions about photos quality - Mate 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I want to buy a mate 8 but the photo take me away for now because of the reviews i can read on popular sites.
So, there is an important improvment for camera since the begining ?
What about slow focus ?
And compared to the g3, It has a better camera ?
Thanks in advance !

G3 imho is better, yes.

!! Okay x) i really love my g3 on MM , it is very smooth and I don't want to change for something bad ...

You must know that native camera app is not fixed yet - look, same sensors - different photos. Thats why is some "rainy effect" smaller contrast&brightness and so on https://youtu.be/9AzlF5635ik?t=802
About autofocus - best shortest but informative video here https://youtu.be/AWUhgpT-Mb0
Also you can found snapshots taked from Mate8 on special xda thread.

It's not "bad", it's just not the greatest. For most people the camera will be just fine

Photo quality: G4 by a bit in good light, G4 quite a lot in low light
Fluidity: Mate 8 by a bit
Battery life: Mate 8 hands down
:good:

for me camera not fine at all
night and low light photos is bad
focus is really slow and cant even focus in low light
camera only good in day light
just reblaced my mate 8 with v10 camera is great in all day and night

HTC 10 is in top according dxo ). Mate native camera app is not fixed and shots are more bad than on same sensor mi5 which also have don't best camera app May be lg have a better can but I always smile with sams lg iPhone ??? because generally China phones is more cheap and higher quality Now even a 150$ phones comparing with them and cheap China phones adds a real good Sony sensors

Good camera in daylight, indoors not so. Pretty bad really, it's sad because most of my shots are in for or in not perfect lightening.

The camera is fine for outdoors but struggles to get any good shots indoors especially with low or dim lighting. It can take some pretty bad photos indoors. It's the one thing I don't like about the phone, everything else is good.

I just switch to HDR mode and take normal photo. I see a real big difference between this modes. And try to take photos in low light with other modes later. I can post both comparing photos. Even a native app is not good for begin.

various questions

so I'm very disappointed about the so big advertising i saw about this phone on this forum from xda staff and promises about possible agreements between xda and huawei so to have maybe good development when in the end it seems it was just words.. nevertheless in this price range i still think this phone is one of the best if not the best for specs so could maybe get one anyway.
that said my first question is about camera. i tested two huawei phones lately (p8 lite and g8) and found out the former did very bad pictures (especially in low light conditions/inside spaces.. terrible!) while the latter (g8) seems to make very good pictures, also with low light.
do someone knows if the honor 8 makes good pictures in low light conditions/inside spaces in the evening like the g8 maybe? or better? but anyway better than the terrible p8 lite?
another thing. stock fw is pretty good but i miss some features, for example long press volume buttons when screen is off to switch songs (without headphones) and unlink notifications/ringtones volume and change volume steps. do you know if i can achieve all this with xposed for example and gravity box? will these features be compatible on huawei?
last thing, i don't use any gapps/services. in the past i used to create flahsable zips for stock firmwares (sony, Samsung etc) to remove all Google stuff, will this work with huawei as well i suppose? or maybe it will prevent phone to boot? dunno how is huawei linked to google stuff.. and if the Google icon in settings will disappear removing google stuff..
tia for any helps guys!

I believe Honor 8 will impress you in terms of photography. As for your desired features, Xposed modules will most likely grant those. For Google stuff, you won't have problems of you delete the right apps.

Low light camera is actually very good. Samsung GS7 is the best in this area but H8 comes close.
Overall you'll see a huge quality bump.
You can customize button press, yes.
If you root you can take almost every gaps from H8.

I can confirm that it makes good (I would not say great it is for the top Samsung devices) pictores in low light. That is the environment where the second camera comes to handy and makes pictures with a bit more light and less noise. The only thing which you have to keep it mind is that you have to hol the phone still since it does not have OIS.

That's, for me the biggest gripe, the lack of any stabilization, either optical or electronic. I can live without 4K.
i have pretty still hands but my primary need is to take pictures of my baby inside home.. so without that stabilisation thing you think all my pictures will be bad probably? (when baby is moving, so most of the times..)
the huawei gx8 my gf owns has OIS... and the honor 8 doesn't.. how is that possible? gx8 is older and wasn't even a flagship..!! her gx8 indeed takes nice pictures also inside home in the evening or outside with low light.. so is that supposed to take better pictures than the honor8..? my god..

You misunderstood me
OIS comes handy when you take a video or a >1/30 picture. In normal light conditions it actually does not have any affect on the picture quality. Usually when there is less light (actually during night) the camera software tries to compensate with taking the picture longer. That is when you can enjoy the benefits of the OIS. But if you hold your phone still there is no much a difference between a camera with OIS and without it only if you zoom in. And even with the dual camera you can take better pictures (the second camera catches more light)
So that is it. And the gx8 could have the OIS because it was a single camera. For two camera you have to create an OIS which moves the two camera simultaneously. The Huawei could just finish the development at the Mate 9.

thanks chief! so i guess I'll experience it myself soon, am probably ordering one honor 8 today as my mi5 is gonna take ages to get back after repair in China.. and i need a replacement phone soon.
then if it takes better pictures than the mi5 and if development will arrive, will keep it, otherwise will sell it when i get my mi5 back
thanks again!

V20 or Mate 9

For those which have owned both, which one must I buy?
I just own LG v20 dual sim and im waiting probably tomorrow Mate 9...so be patient to answer you...
Same, I've got the h918, mate 9 gets here tomorrow. Will report back.
Expecting to be happier with the Mate 9. The v20 is not bad, just doesnt click with me.
I have a mate 8 and my wife has a mate 9. I prefer mate 9.
I used both.. And moved from LGv20 to Mate9.. Mate9 in my opinion is by faaar better.. But depends on what you want from the phone, i do miss the second screen in LG, but over all, Mate 9 for me is the best in the market right now..

Mmmmm lets start with mate9 being more solid as a phone.. Then amaaaazing battery.. Never used a phone with such a battery (and i used many many many phones).. And its optimization when it comes to battery usage.. Screen is almost the same.. But u know its bigger in mate9.. Add to that all, v20 has a very very bad faulty, its camera glass, a tiny small hit towards the glass covering it, and its gone (happened to someone i know who has his phone armed with a big case).. Read about it online, maaanyy are complaining..
Over all, i can fairly say its the mate9 by far.. As a user..
Again, this is my personal experience, some features in v20 u might prefer over all what i mentioned (like changeable battery, or 2 sims+sd), hence the variety in the market..

I don't actually use the audio recording that much, so i can't be fair in judging the difference.. But the loudspeaker, i would say its good enough for me, but v20 is louder if am remembering well..

I have both as well, but the DAC in the V20 is unbeatable.
I decided to buy V20.
After spending so much time researching, I think V20 is a better option, overall.
It has a better DAC, is more root friendly, and has wide angle camera.
The aperture control on Mate 9 is fine, but the results seem too artificial for me. Optical bokeh is much better. I think its a good idea, but the implemention is not perfect still. About the other predefined stuff in Mate 9, almost everything can be fone through the manual controls of the V20, but the user must know how to and be iniciated on photography.
After giving up Note 7, I boughti LG V20 and didn't like it, especially the battery life, it was giving me just 6-8 hours. I bought Mate 9 and I'm now very happy, the only thing I miss is the wide angle camera from LG v20, but that was the only thing. Bettery life is now 15-20 hours a day
Sent from my MHA-L29 using Tapatalk
While I've yet to use either, but the wide angle camera of the V20 isn't that appealing to me. The monochrome sensor seems to give you better options and has the potential to take much better photos than the V20 ever could. I feel like the only thing the V20 has going for it is the DAC and that it's more developer friendly. Other than that, it seems to me that the Mate 9 is the better device in every way.
Oops I was going to comment but since you've already got the V20 congrats and enjoy

Ive made that choice just because for me loudspeaker, headphone output, audio & video recording, and screen is "everything" on a smartphone.
So I thought V20 would make more sense.
For curiosity, do you usually take photos on manual or auto/preset?

Loudspeakers are very close. The v20 is slightly louder.
Audio and video recording do go to the v20 as that is what that phone is built for, the mate is still good at it.
Lg software i just do not like anymore, and photo quality is honesty lacking on it. Far too much noise in anything other than good light (seems like a step down from my g5). The mate 9 is also cheaper with much better battery life. V20 has higher resolution but LG panels have tons of backlight bleed, compared to Huawei damn near uniform panels.
Photos were both in auto and manual, it just seems like the mate has a more capable sensor than the 298 is in the v20
Both good phones. Won't really go wrong with either!

This is not true, I have used both and I can say that the loudspeaker of V20 is less than Note 7. Mate 9 speaker is same or better than V20, but definitely not less. As for the screen, I had big time trouble adjusting the auto brightness of V20. It would be either too much or too less. I was always adjusting it. I didn't have this problem with Note 7 or my current Mate 9. Mate 9 is really under marketed, maybe that's why they are building the best phones to earn some name.

Finally mate 9 Chinese 6g-128g arrived so now I have them side by side with LG v20 dual sim...
+LG v20
1.A very little best camera only in very dark environments (but mate 9 go very well too)
2.Fm radio
3.I have 2 batteries that gives me 12 hours sot(that's why you buy a phone with removable battery)
4.call speaker and loudspeaker is a little louder
5.Everything works great out of the box
6.Better notifications center(mate 9 has major notifications problem)
+MATE 9
1.So so beautiful device
2.very clear stereo speakers and call speaker without cracking noice
3.Better one by one battery life
4.Biger screen less size
5.Better In hand
6.Better front selfie camera

Bad camera quality ?

Hello guys, yesterday i got my Honor 8 and tonight i made some video recordings, the thing is that when i zoom (even only a little bit) the camera quality is very bad. Even my mother's Note 3 has a better quality, i had both phones and i tried to record the same thing at the same time. So is that normal ? P.S. I have no ideea how to use PRO Mode, i was on Auto. Thanks.

Tbh all huawei can't take good zoom photos, but it is a lot better with less noise than older huawei phones. Sure u can return the phone if not satisfied?
The Honor 8 is the wrong phone to use if you want to make video recordings. It only does 1080p and doesn't have OIS, so hand shakes are magnified the more you zoom in (and it's digital zoom, not optical zoom either).

Cmon guys, stop complaining about camera. This is a phone, not a digital camera! Photos made by H8 are decent. In low light conditions, go with Pro photo mode and play with options, there is plenty of choices... As I said, quality of photos are not the best - in range of Samsung Galaxy S7 or Google Pixel, but decent!
Anyway, use flash always (not auto, but on), in all conditions!
From the video comparison I seen on YouTube, Honor 8 video recording actually look better than both Pixel and iPhone 7 @ 1080p, unfortunately it lacks OIS so is shaky. There is just no point to zoom on a smartphone unless you have optical zoom like the iPhone 7 Plus, or at least have 4K recording, and OIS is going to be a must.
I think you should get the iPhone 7 Plus if you want to zoom. Or perhaps an Android phone that has larger micron per pixel (1.25um or more) and OIS.

so mate 9 camera or nexus 6p? which is better?

I have Nexus 6p

I have both. And s7 exynos, mate 9 is unreal. Cpu clearly more powerful than the other 2. Camera is great in pro mode.
I'm getting over 11hrs screen on time with WiFi only and about 9 with data. Amazed. Yes it's better than 6p!

Nobody really has answered the question for you properly. The Nexus 6P has a good camera on it with large pixels. The Mate 9 does not have pixels as large, nor does it have as fast a f stop.
So to answer your question, what do you use the camera for most? e.g. taking pics of kids or pets, indoor shots, or do you shoot a lot of video. etc
To answer the question without this knowledge, all I would say is the Mate 9 camera app allows for extreme creativity over its competition. The S7 has the fastest focus system so action shot or fast moving video is a breeze for it. The large pixels on the 6P are a blessing. The 6P is not the quickest at taking a shot.
Check out the dxo mark test. It's better according to the score. https://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/Mate-9-camera-review-A-big-step-up-for-Huawei the mate 9 scores 85 and the nexus 6p 84.

Dxomark is useless. It's increasingly clear that it's not so independent and neutral. Also, they don't really seem to want to test a camera to find its best potential nor do they provide the original samples. It's a bit sketchy and their final scores seem arbitrary.

The S7 has the fastest focus system so action shot or fast moving video is a breeze for it. The large pixels on the 6P are a blessing. The 6P is not the quickest at taking a shot.

Agree.
Would add, not even close ... Mate 9 way better. Had a blast this Christmas with the camera.

I have to say that those pictures look extremely artificial. Its like the software did the bokeh effect.
I currently have Nexus 6P and I have Mate 9 Pro waiting in the post office, but I am really hesitant to change. One obvious reason is the software but other reason is that Nexus 6P has probably the most underrated camera ever. I did have Samsung Galaxy S7 before, and while the camera is good its not as good as 6P has. I also have Oneplus3T now and while I love almost everything about this phone, on the camera department 6P just wipes the floor with it.
Especially in low light you can get really good detail. Samsung also yes, but I didn't like how with S7 every scenario got more bright. I felt that I lost the atmosphere in the shot.
Like the first picture I post here, it was really dark there, but I think I captured both the details and the atmosphere.
Summa Summarum, Nexus 6P is over a year old phone, but Google did some magic and it is still really tough to beat. Not sure how Pixel can do against it, maybe better. But all the other phones I have tried there is no competition.
It still could be that my curiosity wins and I go pick up my Mate 9 Pro..if I don't like it..I have 850 euros worth phone laying useless..
Great shots from the last 2 posts.
I just want to add, pixel peeping is not the goal. Taking a memorable photo is

All are playing with the aperture effect, which can be dialed up or back or off even after the fact. I think it is great in the first two, the second two with it off are below though I think it makes for an interesting picture with it on. Using it this Christmas I will say it is best with non human subjects, stationary things. When used with people you can sometimes get a bit of the uncanny valley thing going on. But that said, I think the first two of the original pics I posted are great uses, the second two interesting applications.

Nobody really has answered the question for you properly. The Nexus 6P has a good camera on it with large pixels. The Mate 9 does not have pixels as large, nor does it have as fast a f stop.
So to answer your question, what do you use the camera for most? e.g. taking pics of kids or pets, indoor shots, or do you shoot a lot of video. etc

You have to remember that the Mate 9 has something else going for it here... a monochrome sensor which does not lose light capture due to an RGB color filter like other camera sensors. From what I am seeing, this seems to be more than making up for the fact that the aperture is f/2.2 and possibly having small pixels. Also, has there been any determination of the pixel size for the Mate 9's camera sensors... either the color RGB or BW sensors? I can't find any details on the actual sensor models themselves, nor the sensor sizes, nor the sensors' pixel sizes - any of these should give us an idea of how capable the camera sensor is. Also, remember that the lenses themselves are high quality Leica Summarit lenses, which does make a difference.
It seems like Huawei has done something really unique here by using the monochrome sensor to augment light and detail capture, plus having arguably the best digital zoom capabilities of any smartphone to date. My phone gets delivered on Wednesday, and if I have time/desire to do so, I will compare the camera as best as I can against my LG V20 and Pixel XL, using manual controls, zoom, etc.

The 6P is neck and neck against the Pixel phones in terms of photo quality when both devices have HDR+ On. The Pixels are much better though, for 3 reasons... first, they have HDR+ Auto which works in an entirely new way, giving an HDR+ "Lite" mode essentially that allows for instantaneous HDR capture with zero lag/delay. HDR+ Auto cannot give as much dynamic range as HDR+ On (which does have a lag/delay still), but it produces great results and identical results to HDR+ On in most situations... only some situations require HDR+ On for the best quality. Second, they have phase detection autofocus and a host of other sensor enhancements, which make speed/ease of capture MUCH better. The autofocus is almost as fast as the S7 now. Lastly, the HDR+ processing is much faster and doesn't get bogged down easily like the 6P does when taking numerous shots.
The 6P is still a great camera... just as good as the Pixels really, if you have time to get the shot and don't mind the lag from HDR+ On. But the Pixels are still easier to shoot with, and have MUCH better video if you need it.
I also want to mention, that I actually can get much better detail from my LG V20 than my Pixel XL when I try... specifically when using manual mode. Some of this is due to the higher megapixel count, but some of it is also due to having total control over the camera. I don't really trust manual camera apps to work well on the Pixels as they were not optimized for that usage like LG's phones. With that said, the Pixel/6P will have MUCH better dynamic range and consistency in photos over LG... but if you truly want the most detailed shot, and fine-tuned exactly how you want it, LG is the way to go... and maybe Huawei now too. LG's camera app is much better, but Huawei seems to have done a pretty good job in terms of manual control... will have to check out the results when I get my phone Wednesday.

I would suggest uploading pictures to Flickr or Google Photos. XDA compresses them to crap if you attach them here, and the quality looks like garbage.
anyone experiencing stuttering while video recording? Found this to be quite bad!! but video playback is actually ok . Just while recording, the video is insanely laggy..! thought it was the save to sd card thing but no difference when there was no SD card inside. HELP!

The mate 9 also has dual cameras that make up for it's short comings in f stop and smaller pixels. And it has OIS which the 6p is terrible with on video.
All i know is the 6P, for me, was so slow to capture it drove me crazy. Mate 9 isn't quite as fast as my S7 but it is close and adding in the dual camera and zoom options I am finding it a far better experience than my 6P and even better than the S7.

Could you post a few compare pictures from those two cellphones?
Nexus 6P camera better than Mate 9?
Hahahaha

camera quality

Have just bought the note 10 plus 5g and am moving from Huawei mate 20 X
The reason is the screen quality and the uncertainty with Huawei plus of course the 5g
Can anyone tell me about the camera is it good ? I owned note 9 and loved the note experience but the camera was poor
I just hope I'm not making a mistake moving as the camera on the mate 20 X is brilliant as shown below (only issue the AI is bad and I have it switched off most of the time)
Is there any monochrome ?? And night camera ??
I've enclosed a picture from the mate 20 X for comparison
Thanks

I have Note10, didn't see any monochrome lens, but possibly can be applied later as an effect. Nigh camera mode is there. I like images that this phone produced. I usually take photos of the nature, clouds and such... I haven't had a chance to put the camera into a good use, but I will.
Coming from two Pixels the camera on the new note is.... alright..
The issue i have is that you need to mess with different modes to figure out which mode to be in to get the best picture. For instance in regular mode i cant get a crisp picture of anything moving at all. My sons slight movements even cause a blur which sucks. In pro mode it makes the shutter much quicker and is able to snap moving targets.
Portrait mode is also a weird one. Live Focus kind of sucks and takes a ton of time to snap a photo so youll have to make sure that whatever youre shooting stays absolutely still. Again pro mode works pretty well but youll need to quickly change your ISO/fstop etc to get the best color.
Im currently using the Gcam port from the s10 and it works a bit better at getting overall better photos.
Im very used to opening my camera app and quickly taking the best photo possible so for me this is the biggest issue i have with the phone. My advice if you're a camera person is to wait for the next Pixel and make a decision from there
I disagree with Cosmo. I would say if you are a camera person then you know about photography. Basically everything he pointed out tells me he doesn't understand. That is exactly the type of person who should get the Pixel. If you know how cameras work then the n10 has everything you need to get amazing pictures.

Nice photo of my home town
I've come across from the Mate 20 X as well, went to Crosby beach last night to take some photos and they came out really well, there is a night mode which i dabbled with and came out well.
I've not found a monochrome option but that can just be done through snapseed etc

Love Liverpool ? thank you that's what I wanted to hear someone who has come from the mighty mate 20 X
How do you cope with slightly less real estate screen wise ?
Can you make the icons smaller on the note 10 plus as they are huge compared to my mate 20 X

I am and I love to use pro the problem with the mate 20 X is the AI gimic it massively over saturated the pictures I don't use it and normally unless I want a quick pic use pro mode
Hopefully can reproduce shots like this when my note 10 plus lands tomorrow ?

It's taking some getting used to, to most people the screen is probably large but coming from the X it's tiny in comparison. One benefit I've noticed is walking round I just don't notice the Note 10 being there.
Yes you can make the icons smaller, I've changed the DPI to 551 and it's made the icons a nice size for me, just mess about with the DPI till you find a size you like
