For those which have owned both, which one must I buy?
I just own LG v20 dual sim and im waiting probably tomorrow Mate 9...so be patient to answer you...
Same, I've got the h918, mate 9 gets here tomorrow. Will report back.
Expecting to be happier with the Mate 9. The v20 is not bad, just doesnt click with me.
I have a mate 8 and my wife has a mate 9. I prefer mate 9.
I used both.. And moved from LGv20 to Mate9.. Mate9 in my opinion is by faaar better.. But depends on what you want from the phone, i do miss the second screen in LG, but over all, Mate 9 for me is the best in the market right now..

Mmmmm lets start with mate9 being more solid as a phone.. Then amaaaazing battery.. Never used a phone with such a battery (and i used many many many phones).. And its optimization when it comes to battery usage.. Screen is almost the same.. But u know its bigger in mate9.. Add to that all, v20 has a very very bad faulty, its camera glass, a tiny small hit towards the glass covering it, and its gone (happened to someone i know who has his phone armed with a big case).. Read about it online, maaanyy are complaining..
Over all, i can fairly say its the mate9 by far.. As a user..
Again, this is my personal experience, some features in v20 u might prefer over all what i mentioned (like changeable battery, or 2 sims+sd), hence the variety in the market..

I don't actually use the audio recording that much, so i can't be fair in judging the difference.. But the loudspeaker, i would say its good enough for me, but v20 is louder if am remembering well..

I have both as well, but the DAC in the V20 is unbeatable.
I decided to buy V20.
After spending so much time researching, I think V20 is a better option, overall.
It has a better DAC, is more root friendly, and has wide angle camera.
The aperture control on Mate 9 is fine, but the results seem too artificial for me. Optical bokeh is much better. I think its a good idea, but the implemention is not perfect still. About the other predefined stuff in Mate 9, almost everything can be fone through the manual controls of the V20, but the user must know how to and be iniciated on photography.
After giving up Note 7, I boughti LG V20 and didn't like it, especially the battery life, it was giving me just 6-8 hours. I bought Mate 9 and I'm now very happy, the only thing I miss is the wide angle camera from LG v20, but that was the only thing. Bettery life is now 15-20 hours a day

While I've yet to use either, but the wide angle camera of the V20 isn't that appealing to me. The monochrome sensor seems to give you better options and has the potential to take much better photos than the V20 ever could. I feel like the only thing the V20 has going for it is the DAC and that it's more developer friendly. Other than that, it seems to me that the Mate 9 is the better device in every way.
Oops I was going to comment but since you've already got the V20 congrats and enjoy

Ive made that choice just because for me loudspeaker, headphone output, audio & video recording, and screen is "everything" on a smartphone.
So I thought V20 would make more sense.
For curiosity, do you usually take photos on manual or auto/preset?

Loudspeakers are very close. The v20 is slightly louder.
Audio and video recording do go to the v20 as that is what that phone is built for, the mate is still good at it.
Lg software i just do not like anymore, and photo quality is honesty lacking on it. Far too much noise in anything other than good light (seems like a step down from my g5). The mate 9 is also cheaper with much better battery life. V20 has higher resolution but LG panels have tons of backlight bleed, compared to Huawei damn near uniform panels.
Photos were both in auto and manual, it just seems like the mate has a more capable sensor than the 298 is in the v20
Both good phones. Won't really go wrong with either!

This is not true, I have used both and I can say that the loudspeaker of V20 is less than Note 7. Mate 9 speaker is same or better than V20, but definitely not less. As for the screen, I had big time trouble adjusting the auto brightness of V20. It would be either too much or too less. I was always adjusting it. I didn't have this problem with Note 7 or my current Mate 9. Mate 9 is really under marketed, maybe that's why they are building the best phones to earn some name.

Finally mate 9 Chinese 6g-128g arrived so now I have them side by side with LG v20 dual sim...
+LG v20
1.A very little best camera only in very dark environments (but mate 9 go very well too)
2.Fm radio
3.I have 2 batteries that gives me 12 hours sot(that's why you buy a phone with removable battery)
4.call speaker and loudspeaker is a little louder
5.Everything works great out of the box
6.Better notifications center(mate 9 has major notifications problem)
+MATE 9
1.So so beautiful device
2.very clear stereo speakers and call speaker without cracking noice
3.Better one by one battery life
4.Biger screen less size
5.Better In hand
6.Better front selfie camera
Related
Which one do you guys prefer and why? I'm so confused
It's OK, but not in the same ballpark for me! The Mate9 has 5.9 screen, Kirin, Stereo Speakers...
The V20 has better DAC and maybe a Development head start...
Battery life on the Mate 9 is a plus for me, I have tested the V20 for a week, nice phone but front camera and the battery life could have been better, it has better setting menu with lots of options, better screen resolution, the 2nd screen, knock to wake screen, sound is amazing...etc. if you get the international version (2 sims) you will probably never get it rooted (my case) and poor themes store.
Mate 9 is a beast, cons, font resolution , sound coming from V20 feels poor. motion functions don't work (software update is required) nothing is perfect at the end. Good luck

Never said it's bad, it's the other way around a lot better than most phones. just not as rich as V20.
Battery life is great on V20 while not used barely any consumption will be felt. I had to recharge on heavy use in the evening. But mate 9 bigger battery is unbeatable and the quick charge is also faster.

Nobody really has answered the question for you properly. The Nexus 6P has a good camera on it with large pixels. The Mate 9 does not have pixels as large, nor does it have as fast a f stop.
So to answer your question, what do you use the camera for most? e.g. taking pics of kids or pets, indoor shots, or do you shoot a lot of video. etc
To answer the question without this knowledge, all I would say is the Mate 9 camera app allows for extreme creativity over its competition. The S7 has the fastest focus system so action shot or fast moving video is a breeze for it. The large pixels on the 6P are a blessing. The 6P is not the quickest at taking a shot.
Check out the dxo mark test. It's better according to the score. https://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/Mate-9-camera-review-A-big-step-up-for-Huawei the mate 9 scores 85 and the nexus 6p 84.

Dxomark is useless. It's increasingly clear that it's not so independent and neutral. Also, they don't really seem to want to test a camera to find its best potential nor do they provide the original samples. It's a bit sketchy and their final scores seem arbitrary.

I have to say that those pictures look extremely artificial. Its like the software did the bokeh effect.
I currently have Nexus 6P and I have Mate 9 Pro waiting in the post office, but I am really hesitant to change. One obvious reason is the software but other reason is that Nexus 6P has probably the most underrated camera ever. I did have Samsung Galaxy S7 before, and while the camera is good its not as good as 6P has. I also have Oneplus3T now and while I love almost everything about this phone, on the camera department 6P just wipes the floor with it.
Especially in low light you can get really good detail. Samsung also yes, but I didn't like how with S7 every scenario got more bright. I felt that I lost the atmosphere in the shot.
Like the first picture I post here, it was really dark there, but I think I captured both the details and the atmosphere.
Summa Summarum, Nexus 6P is over a year old phone, but Google did some magic and it is still really tough to beat. Not sure how Pixel can do against it, maybe better. But all the other phones I have tried there is no competition.
It still could be that my curiosity wins and I go pick up my Mate 9 Pro..if I don't like it..I have 850 euros worth phone laying useless..
Great shots from the last 2 posts.
I just want to add, pixel peeping is not the goal. Taking a memorable photo is

All are playing with the aperture effect, which can be dialed up or back or off even after the fact. I think it is great in the first two, the second two with it off are below though I think it makes for an interesting picture with it on. Using it this Christmas I will say it is best with non human subjects, stationary things. When used with people you can sometimes get a bit of the uncanny valley thing going on. But that said, I think the first two of the original pics I posted are great uses, the second two interesting applications.

You have to remember that the Mate 9 has something else going for it here... a monochrome sensor which does not lose light capture due to an RGB color filter like other camera sensors. From what I am seeing, this seems to be more than making up for the fact that the aperture is f/2.2 and possibly having small pixels. Also, has there been any determination of the pixel size for the Mate 9's camera sensors... either the color RGB or BW sensors? I can't find any details on the actual sensor models themselves, nor the sensor sizes, nor the sensors' pixel sizes - any of these should give us an idea of how capable the camera sensor is. Also, remember that the lenses themselves are high quality Leica Summarit lenses, which does make a difference.
It seems like Huawei has done something really unique here by using the monochrome sensor to augment light and detail capture, plus having arguably the best digital zoom capabilities of any smartphone to date. My phone gets delivered on Wednesday, and if I have time/desire to do so, I will compare the camera as best as I can against my LG V20 and Pixel XL, using manual controls, zoom, etc.

The 6P is neck and neck against the Pixel phones in terms of photo quality when both devices have HDR+ On. The Pixels are much better though, for 3 reasons... first, they have HDR+ Auto which works in an entirely new way, giving an HDR+ "Lite" mode essentially that allows for instantaneous HDR capture with zero lag/delay. HDR+ Auto cannot give as much dynamic range as HDR+ On (which does have a lag/delay still), but it produces great results and identical results to HDR+ On in most situations... only some situations require HDR+ On for the best quality. Second, they have phase detection autofocus and a host of other sensor enhancements, which make speed/ease of capture MUCH better. The autofocus is almost as fast as the S7 now. Lastly, the HDR+ processing is much faster and doesn't get bogged down easily like the 6P does when taking numerous shots.
The 6P is still a great camera... just as good as the Pixels really, if you have time to get the shot and don't mind the lag from HDR+ On. But the Pixels are still easier to shoot with, and have MUCH better video if you need it.
I also want to mention, that I actually can get much better detail from my LG V20 than my Pixel XL when I try... specifically when using manual mode. Some of this is due to the higher megapixel count, but some of it is also due to having total control over the camera. I don't really trust manual camera apps to work well on the Pixels as they were not optimized for that usage like LG's phones. With that said, the Pixel/6P will have MUCH better dynamic range and consistency in photos over LG... but if you truly want the most detailed shot, and fine-tuned exactly how you want it, LG is the way to go... and maybe Huawei now too. LG's camera app is much better, but Huawei seems to have done a pretty good job in terms of manual control... will have to check out the results when I get my phone Wednesday.

The mate 9 also has dual cameras that make up for it's short comings in f stop and smaller pixels. And it has OIS which the 6p is terrible with on video.
All i know is the 6P, for me, was so slow to capture it drove me crazy. Mate 9 isn't quite as fast as my S7 but it is close and adding in the dual camera and zoom options I am finding it a far better experience than my 6P and even better than the S7.

Hahahaha
Should I buy the mate 9 nowadays (with the 16:9 aspect ratio) or wait for the bezeless mate 10 (with the 18:9 ratio)? I'm not sure which one will be more comfortable to hold and use with one hand (most of the time) i.e. I'm looking for the most compact of the two for easy handling and less overall weight.
& I'm not really sure how come the mate 10 will be taller than Mate 9 if:
The bezeless design of the Mate 10 should optimize the real estate of the current Mate 9 to a new level
& the surface area of the Mate 10 is going to be smaller than that of the Mate 9?
Regards
better wait for mate 10.... mate 9 is too big and too heavy for most hands.... I constantly have pain in my wirst
Just wait for the mate 11, will be awesome

seriously I'm between Mate 9 & Mate 10 only. I may not live up till Mate 18 is released!!. I'm deciding between the current model or waiting for the newer one if it is really going to be more hand friendly - because of the bezeless desgin - but that 18:9 aspect ratio of the newer coming model kinda worries me because it 'll make the phone taller than the current model.
If I were you, I would buy mate 9.
You can buy Mate 9 and use it till 2017 end, then sell or stay.
Mate 9 was released in 2016 November. I suppose, Mate 10 will be released in the end of 2017.
buy a galaxy s8+
Wait for M10 if you can, i have the Mate 9 and would buy it again, but knowing that M10 soon will come out, i wonder what kind of improvements it will bring.
I'm so happy with my Mate 9 that I'll change only when it breaks. :victory:

I agree always better to wait for mate 10 if you can afford the time. But size is not the reason. This phone is perfect size I couldn't imagine smaller. If you don't want a big phone there are plenty of other options.
Maybe I can't afford the time. LOL
There's a long time until November/December.

I just couldn't wait either and I bought a Mate 9 Pro in the meantime until November/December when the Mate 10 and the Pixel phones are out.
I'm so happy with the device, same specifications, but with Super AMOLED QHD display and better speakers, one of the reasons I dropped the Mate 9 a few months ago.
I also had the P10 Plus, but it was just garbage and I don't recommend to buy it at all.

Actually I wasn't expecting a big change from regular Mate 9, but even when they have the same position, is day and night difference between them. The quality and volume is far way better and is the only phone so far that give me this real stereo sound, and I'm really used to it because my last 2 phones were with front facing speakers (Axon 7 and Idol 4S), so I can notice the difference pretty quick.
I got the regular Mate 9 last January, but after a couple of weeks I dropped it because screen was "only" FHD, the speakers were not that good and the one in the earpiece was with almost no sound at all. I came back to Axon 7 and a month ago I got a P10 Plus wishing that they fixed this, but was even worse, with no sound until I reached about 70% volume, and the phone itself is just pure trash, with a lot of heating and battery draining problems. My bet is that Huawei messed up EMUI 5.1 in the P10 Plus, but still was a device that had everything I needed if it could work properly.
After some days of searching for a new phone, I found that there was a Mate 9 Pro version, that is almost identical to P10 Plus, and I decided to give a shot and MAAAAAAN!!!, wonderful screen, really fast device, even faster than regular Mate 9, really good speakers and excellent audio through jack. I never put the speakers at more than 40% and they sound pretty good, and for audio jack, the same because even at half, is already painful for my ears; besides I have really good isolation with the earbuds I'm using. I carry a Sony XBA-H1, that by no means are the best, but neither are cheap and the response and dynamic range is awesome.
There are so many differences between the Mate 9 and the Pro version, and I wonder why no one talks about them, is much more than 6GB RAM, QHD screen and 5.5" display size. For example, the capacitive buttons are really nice and they hide along the metal body. Same with the LED, that in this case is multicolor, and when some notification comes, it remembers me my multi color Razer mouse, because it starts to light with a lot of colors. This AMOLED screen is so fast and responsive, and this Pro version comes with different options in EMUI as well. The curvy edge is a nice touch, because is not uncomfortable to use, like those Galaxy Edge versions, and it adds a touch of elegance to the phone.
Not everything is good, and so far the only downside is battery life, which is not as good as in the Mate 9, even when they have the same battery. With regular Mate 9 I could easily do 7-8 hrs SOT, while in this device I'm usually around 6hrs, but is more than enough for me and I'm positive it will improve when we get Android O and EMUI 6.0 which is already on the works.
In conclusion, I would recommend to buy the Pro version if you can afford it, because the experience it offers is totally different and really premium, and even when is kind of unknown model, many reviews still call it the best Android phone you can get, but of course, with a high price tag.
I am also on the fence about that gimmicky 2:1 aspect ratio. It is really impractical and most media out there is 16:9 which uses the whole screen instead of having black bars on the sides, which is quite annoying and unnecessary. I sure wish they would have stuck with 16:9 instead.

It is simply not time to switch to 18:9 aspect ratio yet.
Next year all apps and most media will be ready for the new format.

It seems the new Honor Note 9 is a taste of what it can come for Mate 10. Is only my personal opinion, but I like it.
Hi awesome XDA community, not sure which one to order, £350 for the U11 or £450 for the Oneplus 5T, one of the main points is the camera, I've heard wonders about this camera in low light, which is what I'll use it the most, for this Christmas pictures... I know there is a big price difference, but I'm not taking that into account, just wondering if you guys had the chance today to order one of these two, which one would you guys order and why.
Can't wait to read your opinions, thanks everyone =D
U11. The 5T camera just isn't fantastic.

And the screen is awful
Well I think that's a no brainer. The only thing that U11 lacks is the 18:9 screen but for a 100 less there is no competition. U11 beats OP5T camera in low light situation by a mile and that's the main feature you will be using.
If you were considering the Oneplus 5T as an alternative, consider also the ZTE Axon 7. But as others have said, the U11's camera will blow both phones out of the water with its low light superiority.
If you care about the system experience, do not use OnePlus. Because it will certainly disappoint you, such as the recent exposure of their fake 8.0 system (actually 7.1).

PS: Chinese content you may not read it, but as a Chinese I hate their practice.
Just had the same decision to make myself, and went with the U11 for it's camera. I've had Oneplus phones in the past and the cameras are never as good as the hype. Definitely not disappointed so far!
the 1080p pentile screen just killed the 5t. (66% of true 1080p resolution on a 6' screen)
I've actually had both and they are both amazing phones.
I've stuck with the U11 because the camera is better and battery life is I a big step up as well.
The OP5 is a bit thinner and OLED screen is nice to have.
guys, any news on the "horizontal lines" that appear on the u11 display? is it widespread like lg g4`s bootloop? I want to buy this phone but I`m honestly afraid of stumbling on this issue.

Food for thought, or perspective...the mere fact that this thread has less than 10 posts can tell you it's pretty specific for a few devices. I wouldn't worry about it.
Edit: I didn't realize that this wasn't the horizontal lines thread. Either way, I wouldn't worry about it. It isn't a widespread problem either way.

No white lines here. My phone is perfect.
Thanks everyone for the replies and read till the end so I went with the Mate 10, got it at a unbelievable price of £350 on eBay, in very good condition, so got it for the Xmas period and I must say, very impressed with the Mate 10, great camera, screen and battery, impressive headphone jack output quality too, but still the thought of the U11 still hangs, so I sold my Mate 10 yesterday and I have the U11 on the way now, it will take about a week to get it, but I'm sure it will be worth it =) I'll give my impressions on the camera compared to the Mate 10, when I get it.
Thanks again everyone and have happy new year.
For what it's worth, I constantly am switching between phones and always keep two on me. It's not the 5t, but the two I've been stuck on for a while are the OnePlus 5 and U11. The U11 is my main device and has survived all others that could have potentially taken its place. Among others, S8+, Pixel 2 XL, Mate 9 & Mate 9 Pro, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. The one I miss the most honestly is the Mate 9. Anyways, I'd imagine if the two best devices out in my mind are the 5 & U11, then surely it would now be the 5t & U11. You really can't go wrong with either, but the U11 for me is unmatched. The Mate 10 has been in my sights ever since letting the Mate 9 go, can't wait to try it as well. Hell of a find on eBay btw...lol.
Its no contest. U11 wins hands down.
Ask on HTC section - answer: get U11
Ask on Oneplus section of forum; get Oneplus 5T
I don't have 5T but I'm heavily thinking about buying one.
What I suggest you? It depends, which device you had before?
Before U11 I was using Oneplus 3, well I still have.
And I don't feel like big upgrade expect camera.
So, few my thoughts:
Right after using U11 for week:
- yes camera is much better, 3D audio and audio focus while recording video is great and very useful.
-same screen size but U11 is bigger: wider and more thick - less comfortable in hand.
- screen does have better dynamic range, showing more in shadows, much sharper. But it's not as bright as on Oneplus or 5T.
- Audio quality on headphones with this dongle is much better than on smartphones without special audio features (features mean additional DAC/AMP like in LG V30)
- Performance is very good but don't see upgrade over my Oneplus 3 which is still one of the fastest devices, maybe animations are smoother and Facebook app start little faster.
- Edge sense is more useful than I thought. For example, short squeeze slide down notifications (I don't need to reach top of screen). Long squeeze to turn ON flashlight, even if screen is off - well quickest way and very handy.
Now few annoying quirks:
- I don't understand why fingerprint scanner is so small. I often miss click trying go back to home screen. It's not as fast as on Oneplus devices.
- You can't skip/minimize incoming call while you using phone, home button doesn't work. What the hell? Is this a Nokia 3310?
- you need to set automatic battery saving for minimum (5%) or turn this completely off because it will blink in your face (ye it's annoying on night), even when you are using phone.
- if you want to root, change ROMs etc. It's much more complicated and you will lose warranty.
IMO Don't buy U11 4GB version if you are heavy user. I'm using 6GB version and it's great like one my Oneplus but, 4GB for heavy multitasking it's not enough nowadays.

HTC U11 is IP67 water and dust resistant while 5T has none. U11 has a QuadHD screen while 5T does only with the lower 1080p.
U11 has a microSD expansion slot which 5T does not have.
Ye, Oneplus doesn't have micro SD. But still have plant of storage:, 64 and 128GB version. More Important it's same over world. HTC have strange fragmentation, single sim, dual sim, dual sim with 6/128 GB in few regions. Many software versions depends on CID its very confusing for someone who didn't had HTC device before (I mean whole thing if you want root or custom ROM: CID, MID, ruu, unlocking bootloader void warranty, S-off)
About waterproof:
Did you read HTC warranty statement? I would be worried to use it inside pool or shower.
"
Normal wear and tear may decrease the water and dust resistance over time.
"
"Do not intentionally submerge
OnePlus is known to not respect your privacy. I'm fine with OEM's collecting data, given they make the practice known and give users the option to opt out.

Ive owned both 5T and changed it for the U11.... Awesome speakers, much better display on U11... AMOLed is too saturated.. Camera is Much better on U11.... except the noise on images thats cropped up since the September camera app update.. Hmmm... but it is 100x better camera than the 5T...
However, 5T is better for Headphone Jack and more modern UI... the U11 Sense UI is looking very dated... some aspects from the M8 are still here... but on the whole.. the U11 is fast, practical and very reliable..
I want to trade my S10+ for OP 7 Pro.
The following reasons why I want to switch to Oneplus 7 pro are:
1. QHD 6.67" amoled all screen, vibrant big and bright all screen. Nearly as vibrant as Samsung's screen.
2. Camera best Oneplus have produced. Images sharp with good detail, really impressed. Obviously not as good as Samsung's but for me good enough. I'm not a massive picture taker or selfies person. 4k 60fps super stable.
3. Loud dual speakers, again this is top notch. Not as full or rich sound as S10 plus but it's darn close. Another surprise.
4. Triple SSS performance (coin that one) - Super smooth speedy performance. No strutting or freezing experienced as of yet.
5. Near stock firmware with a few Oneplus touches. Love it better then stock android a actually
6. Quick updates to latest Android software.
7. Pop up camera prefer it over the hole in the screen, use it unlock phone as it's a cool feature.
8. That damn 90Hz refresh rate, boy ow boy is it smooth. This has completely spoilt me, it's fluid.
9. Snapdragon cpu which is better than samsung's exynos.
Do you guys think is worth the switch or i should stick with S10?
Do it
I did this exact thing a year ago and am still happy with my decision
Swapped it six months back and am happy with the phone at the moment. Screen is good. Software is snappy. Camera is a tad bad as compared to s10 plus but you can use gcam mod to compensate for that.
Battery is also better with custom kernel.

Hi
Yes and only one! It's a Samsung! [emoji6]
Envoyé de mon OnePlus 7 Pro en utilisant Tapatalk
I miss a few
Namely this phone is a bit heavy as compared to s10 plus and the feel in hand is not as good as s10.
Secondly miss my water and dust resistance. Used to wash my phone after my covid duty, haha.
The last thing is the headphone jack.

These are the only things that bothers me.
The phone is too bulky and heavy.
Sounds like you have your mind made up lol. I wouldn't because it's basically a side-step instead of an upgrade.
Also root depending on phone versions (both the s10 and 7pro)

it seems like youve made your decision which is the right one .. go for it you wont regret it ... for camera if you install gcam i think it's as good (or even better) than s10 .. also you get used to its weight .. i'm using 7p for about a year and i'm super satisfied .. i just wish it had better battery .. (its decent but
i'd like it to be more than decent ) also i wish i would have chose 8gb or 12gb ram variant i'm using 6gb and ram management is not as good.. other than than i dont think i'm upgrading at least for a good 3 years to come
came from s10+ as well before getting the op7p. the most annoying thing I had with the s10+ was it heats like you can cook something especially if mobile data is used. best decision ever.
