Hi I have a otg USB cable, how can I make it work with nexus s? Do I have to root it or even flash a custom ROM in order to do so?
Thank you!
You'll need to flash a custom kernel to enable the functionality. Check the dev section to see which ones support it (Matrix kernel is one of them, there are probably others but I haven't been to this forum in awhile). You'll also need to make/buy a USB Y cable and connect an external power source, because the Nexus S doesn't supply enough voltage from its USB port.
TBH it's not really worth the effort.
Hi! I was wondering if it was possible (it probably is) to merge ralink drivers into some i9300 kernel to make an eventual USB external Wifi adapter. More in detail, the modules i think would be mostly useful are the RT2080 ones, even i need specifically the rt3070 one. I saw that this was already done on Nexus7 devices, and wanted to ask if some dev could do this or some tips on how to do it by myself. Thank you

EDIT 22/03
So i found out the xda-dev app Module Loader. Injected rt3070sta.ko module and successfully mounted my Zyxel NWD2105 Wifi dongle. But it seems phone doesnt care. I m on Slimkat 4.4 v3.8 on i9300. The question is: how do i now become able to use the dongle?

You must boot from a linux distrubiton such as backtrack. But there is no native way that i know for doing that. Although there is one solution that you run linux background and connect to it by vnc viewer. Take a look at this

I built a few kernels for 4.3 and 4.4 with these modules, but the problem is once I built the kernel I lost the ability to mount the ext4 SD to be available within android. Only adb can see it.
What do you see in lsusb, or dmesg when you plug it in?
simply nothing. my rt3070 device is not even recognized by phone (i9300 with 4.4.4 Slimkat) after inserting specific .ko modules
Hello guys,
I was wondering if usb otg works on android one.
But as i tested with cable..it isnt working..
So i installed a 'usb otg checker' app from market.
The test gave me a positive result..that means the phone suppprts usb host mode.
But is disabled in kernel.
So my question is can usb otg mode be enabled WITHOUT rooting and changing kernel.
Cause i dont want to root my phone as am satisfied with the features i am getting and also waiting for official android update.
Plz help me in this topic.. Otg check result attached in attachments.
Thank you.
Can anyone tell me if modification in kernel will turn usb otg working or not.
I know that otg is supported by hardware.
But in a nexus 4 moded kernel usb otg is mentioned to be working, i tried installing that but somehow it wont install.

It depends, some devices have the hardware to support OTG but they don't have the software to support OTG. These devices can add the software to support OTG then they can use OTG.
But some device don't have the hardware to support OTG, these devices can't use OTG at all, no matter what is modified. They just don't have the necessary hardware so they can't use it.
Your device might have the hardware but doesn't have the software.
You can try the Stick Mount app by Chainfire in PlayStore, if your device has the hardware to support OTG then this app should allow OTG to work.
