Scratches - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion

Overall a really good phone, the best you can buy today.
But there's one thing you have to take into account.
Weak scratch resistance, same as on galaxy S2. Gorilla glas is a pure marketing, I don't see any evolution.
To be fair this issue appearing not on Samsung only, but gorilla glas is a part of Samsung corporation.
I have now a long scratch on the front of my phone for 800€, just from wearing it in the pocket.

what is funny is i don't even use a screen protector and never once had a scratch. don't put it face down in dumb spots, or in your pocket with keys or something else that can scratch the phone.

same here i had my phone for less than a month, and i have been putting it in separate pocket ( away from keys and coins ) and yet it got scratches on it now
compared to my previous S6 the screen is so fragile.

Same here. Not good at all, never had scratches on my previous phones and now after a short while there are already scratches.... POOR POOR QUALETY

i have had my edge for over a month, it goes in and out of my pockets constantly, you guys must have like diamond dust in your pockets or something.

Me too, luckily i had screen protector already. But have not used camera & flashlight protector, now there are some soft scratches on my flashlight. =(

I hate how back of my S7 got scratched despite of fact, that it was carried in SView cover. But I've applied some 360 foil which covers my phone from every side and now I'm a little bit less worried about the look of it in next 1-2 years.
Although lack of good glass covering whole front panel sucks :|

Got my Edge as soon as it was out. Never had a screen protector on it, only a hard case. Screen still looks new, no scratches.

tempered glass
And dont sell a good tempered glass

I personnally prefer to trust protections.
I have a dbrand skin on the back and a invisibleshield screen protection for the front, no case needed. Perfect combo

Scratches after 8 hours of gentle and careful use.
Stored in empty pocket.
Ended up with like 8-10 scratch lines.
Worse still tempered glass don't work. What a shame.

Screen protector

I was just wondering if Gorilla glass can withstand pocket condition where there is a standard bus card, a student ID and some dollar notes.
not really... items you carry in your pocket are not a problem, but dust is. Dust can scratch anything, even gorilla glas... I recommed using some screen protector, even the cheapest ones on ebay can do the trick
i dont need sc protector.
My phone is sgs.
i have a gorilla glass.
Yes, so long as the cards are not on the glass side. I have SGS1 since August 2010, it's used daily and always carried in pocket, never used a screen protector, it still looks like new.

I am searching also for a screen protector. If you guys think that the gorilla glass works, I`ll give it a try also.
Fair enough

I have galaxy i5700 without gorilla glass ofc and I carried it in my pocket without other items = perfect glass surface after 1.5 years.
I bought used sgs from my friend and it have some small scratches I guess some of them are from outside pocket condition and others from change caring or something.
I think your screen should be safe if you avoid things to touch it like stated above and screen protector could lessen touch screen sensitivity.
GS more than a year old, sinds i bought it, its in mij pocket, take it out and put it in 100 times a day, not a sigle scratch on the screen !
Bur only the phone, nothing else in te pocket ;-)
Screen protectors don't lower the sensitivity. I have my S+ for half a year and if I look from certain angle i can see 2 scratches. But I don't really know why because I take care of it. I think screen protectors are somehow necessary
gorilla glass is enought, you dont need to use any extra protection
I agree , its a myth that screen protectors lower the sensitivity of touchscreen .
I am sure gorilla glass can withstand scratches , but i use a screen protector anyway.
The only place the sgs gets scratched is around the metallic rim , neither the glass or plastic backcover gets scratched.
The only gripe are those ugly fingerprint smudges.
I'm using this screen protector: Vikuiti DQC160
It works fine and the phone is as responsive as before...
Even better is, that it's easy to clean. Just like the original Gorilla Glass. Wiping over the display, and every fingerprint vanishes
mine gorila glaz got few huge scratches from sand in my poscket at summer and hell of small ones. You should buy some cheap one screen protector from DX or focalprice if you want to have a clear screen if it is not to late already
gorilla glas is not enough...! don't believe that.
i had a screen protector since first day on my galaxy s. one day i wanted to try it without as everybody told that nothing will happen.
result: after ONE DAY without screen protector i had a deep scratch which i can see easily. i took back the screen protector on the phone. and i even didn't notice how the scratch could be produced, and i still don't know. i assume i scratched it on the metal clip of my belt by taking it out of my pocket. there was nothing in my pocket that could have scratched the screen.
so it is more resistant than normal glass, but if u are unfortune u could easily catch a scratch. or you have luck and nothing happens. but the risk is definitely there...
Screen protector is a must for me. My phone is almost an year old but still not even a single scratch on screen.

If you do not wear keys or other sharp objects in the same same pocket with phone, the screen will not get scratched. I have my phone almost one year and still no single scratch
You guys are paranoid. I seriously use the phone for six months and the display do not have any scratches. Buy a normal bag or holster, and enough stupidity to suffer.
dont play with your expensive phone just buy a good 3-layer anti scratch screen guard and it will work for you perfectly...
screens are expensive and the guard saved me a lot of times.

Does the screen easily scratched?

I am waiting for my Galaxy S6 arrives. Does the screen easily scratched? I don't want to take extremely good care of it.
And also does anyone try using tempered glass protector? How does it feel compared to regular?
I have preordered an extended battery case and they promised to give me a tempered glass protector. I'll let you all know how it works once I get them.

Thank you.
I got the zagg tempered glass protector and it feels pretty solid. IMO the gorilla glass 4 feels a bit better but it's super clear and feels nice.
The S6 is made of Gorilla glass corning 4 so it's pretty tough but it wouldn't hurt to have some sort of protection. I have IQShield screen protectors and it provides full coverage. Check them out on Amazon. Also it's currently on sale.

My screen on my S6 has scratched really really easy, only had a few days and there is a one inch very deep scratch on the screen. in all the years I've had a phone I've never scratched a phone so badly as this. The worsted thing is i have no idea how it happened. had my S5 for about 18 months with not one single mark or anything to the phone screen

Sorry to hear about the deep scratch. I don't have a screen protector on mine yet, though I just received the BodyGuardz Ultra Tough. I've been careful, but I'm not using a case or screen protector at all currently and have just been putting it in my pocket thus far. I would say scratches were much easier to put on my previous phone, which was the crusty old S3.
OP, I think that the screen can and will scratch somewhat easily. I think that if you don't want to take extra precautions with the phone on a day-to-day basis, I would recommend getting a screen protector and/or a case. These just allow you to be a little more clumsy and not have any repercussions. (or fewer repercussions.)

doesn't scratch easily but my oleophobic coating is already wearing and ive had it since april 10th
i've had the phone since launch and been using it without screen protector and have not notice any scratches at all. Im not careful with my phone too. Put it in my pocket with keys and change regularly and put it screen down, since the camera makes the phone slippery when it's on smooth uneven surfaces. With previous phones, nexus 4 and 5, they would have some micro scratches by now. I dont get this obsession over getting scratches on a screen that are not noticeable when the screen is on. You are only going to have this phone for a year or two so i dont see what the big deal is.
I got a small scratch after using the phone for one day. Probably due to a grain of sand in my pocket or something like that. I'm planning on getting a screen protector not only to prevent further scratching, but also to ensure the current scratch won't be visible to the naked eye. Albeit knowing that there already is a scratch truly grinds my gear.

I sometimes miss my old moto x 2013-- that thing NEVER scratched no matter what. I had that thing naked for a two years and I re-sold it in immaculate condition. I dropped that thing dozens of times, and it was never harmed once. I miss that thing...
I had a fine scratch on mine after a couple days of use. Luckily Rogers let me exchange mine anyway cause mine had a slightly looser than normal home button.
Quickly put on a tempered glass protector on both the front and back.

I'd recommend the Tempered Glass Screen Protector,Thin, transparent.
Tempered glass protection screen of mobile phone film is currently the most high-end products to strengthen the protection of the.
The protective layer thickness of only 0.1 mm, can completely cover the original screen surface, prevent external damage, scratches, more shock absorbent, 5 times higher than the standard PET film. The video has no effect on the screen.

Thank you for your opinion-- do you have a brand that you recommend? I think we all know that glass screen protectors are the way to go, but it's a matter of which company you buy from that determines the success or failure of the screen protector.
i scratched the flash/heart rate monitor sensor glass, luckily everything still works and i'm thankful it wasn't my camera lens
I have the S6 for one week nude and no scratches, though I am very careful.
I am just a little annoyed by the reflection rainbow effect the screen does under sunlight, will a tempered glass take it away?

Plastic Screen Protector that actually seals around the edges.

So after several failures with glass protectors and halo effects with all of them, I decided to try a PET version-- just to get some protection on the glass, thinking that I would just have to deal with the feel of it.
I tried amFilm (have used their stuff before, and it was pretty good).
Well, now a few days later, the screen does not have any halo effect. It sticks to the sides very well, and doesn't seem to be up-lifting at all. The feel is still plasticy, but that's about expected. It certainly doesn't feel as smooth as glass, but I'll take it. The glass ones were pealing off, haloing, etc etc, and this is a perfect solution. I'm sure that in time, I will come to grow used to the feel, and it won't even be a hindrance at all.
I am using the same one, someone mentioned this one on the glass SP thread so I gave it a try.
Been using it for a week now, and it's already showing some signs of use, a few scratches, pretty sure it's gonna be all over in a couple of months. I also have misty fingers, so gliding over the screen is painful in times.
One thing I don't like about it is the cutout for the front camera, they could've easily just made a hole instead of how it cuts off on the top. Also, it does lift a little bit when I press the volume or power buttons, I think I have aligned it pretty OK too, but nothing is perfect I guess.

I'll have to watch out for that as I go along. At least there's a lifetime warranty- so when it does wear out, you can get another one for free!
I've been hearing some good things about this products. Thanks, I think that I'll try it out.
Using the same thing, been 2 weeks and it does get scratched easily but good enough for now. Been using amFilm for awhile too. They already made tempered glass for 6s, wish they would make one for our phones.

The TPU screen protectors seem to work. I have one on mine and its holding on really well. They are much like the TPU cases, a soft feeling gel like film. They are completely floppy, so dont try to pull up like the harder plastic films, they are also virtually invisible.
There are downsides, they are very floppy and stretchy, so can be tricky to fit. Im also not too sure how durable they will be. They recover from some marks quite easily, but they can snag. This is the one I have on mine..

Curious to know what's the point of a screen protector these days with the glass being so scratch resistant.
I.e on my iphone 5, i had it for 2 years no protector. only scratches are ones not visible. Unless you throw your phone around like a toy, put it in a pocket full of sand ect, You really wont scratch it.

For me it's "just in case" protection. I'm very careful with my toys, and even more so with this expensive phone. There are times when things happen and by me just being me and it falling off my lap, all it takes is that one unlucky fall when it hits the corner of the chair leg. I've never broken a phone screen, yet...

Gorilla Glass is about as scratch resistant as cheese. Its actually worse than normal glass. Gorilla Glass is somewhat shock resistant and highly flexible, but not scratch resistant.

I'm calling you on this one, I work with glass every day, and i'm around an engineering shop daily, so there's plenty of potential for my glass to scratch. It's held up fine for 2 years no protector.
Glass on the Mohs scale is 5.5
Gorilla glass is 6.8
Diamond is 10.

'Glass' as in soda glass maybe, but plenty of other types are better. 6.8 isnt that great. It certainly doesn't explain why my last phone got a scratch after falling face first on a brand new clean carpet!
Scratching isnt all about hardness anyway, its only part of the story and is sold to us in marketing BS. A softer object can scratch a harder one, all that happens is that the softer one is damaged more. This notion that hardness alone is all there is to scratching or breaking is completely wrong and needs to stop.
A rough piece of metal, almost any metal, will tear up the surface of GG very easily indeed.
I bought a skinomi film that wraps around both edges...there self healing too
Anyone tried Pleson?

Does anyone not use a screen protector?

Stopped using mine, and love it. Just an overall more pleasant experience with the phone, and plan on keeping it off.

I see no need for a screen protector if your device is equipped with Gorilla glass (and you are handling it carefully).
Sent from my black pearl using Tapatalk
I always use tempered glass screen protector to make sure fine grits of sand and any hard object don't scratch the screen. I can live with scratched bezels like that on my Note 4 but not on any of my phones's screen.
Never used a protector and have not had any problems. If I was a construction worker or farmer I'd put it in a case, but I have a desk job so it's never exposed to harsh conditions.
Dropped my phone in the parking lot a few months ago. The tempered glass took a chip on the edge, but my screen was fine. I dare not think about what would have happened to the screen otherwise.
Screen
After a lot of drops, screen still looks intact. But from closer look I can see some scratches. If it wasn't Gorilla glass 3 I will definitely buy screen protector.
I often sell my phones and the first thing a buyer looks for are scratches on the screen; therefore, I always use a tempered glass screen protector. Over time, I find that fine scratches will develop, even with Gorilla glass.
As seen on the android wear watches. Gorilla glass is very good against breaking, or destroying, but isn't as good against scratches, so these little scratches always build over time. I've never used any kind of these glass temmpered protectors or whatever nonsense, because the gorilla glass is sufficient enough against breaking, and when u drop the phone on the edge, the glass won't save you either way and the display will crack due to the "construction" of gorilla glass. It's very dense and strong against any impact from the front side, but is very fragile to impacts from "sides". So I use a foil from myscreenprotector dot com. I have S IV for almost 2 years now, and I'm really harsh on it. I've dropped it like zillion times, It even fell a couple times from stairs and nothing happened. My middle frame had pieces falling out, so I've changed it, I've changed the back cover and I'm planning on changing the front frame, because its compltely shattered at some places. But the screen never cracked. And the foil from the site... I can't even see it on the display, It doesn't feel different to touch and I use to replace it every year or so (8$ isn't that much...) and when I peel the foil off the display, the display is as new as the first day I got it, no scratches what so ever
EDIT: I've started with the android wear... I currently have huawei watch for 3 months and it has sapphire glass, which is not as strong as gorilla glass, but is extremely good vs scratches... And I've never seen anyone, who would stomp on their watch, but you can scratch them anywhere...
I don't. Each to their own I guess.
Gorilla glass is too high rated. I've seen drop tests for all Samsung S phones, from about shoulder height. They all ended up with broken screens. Gorilla glass my ass.
The Oukitel K4000's screen is amazing. You can hammer nails with it and the screen won't even have a scratch. Manufacturers should start making screens like the K4000's screen.
Gorilla glass my ass, its scratch easily in my jeans back pocket,, so i put on tempered glass
My protection
In the 2 1/2 years I used the S4, I never used a screen protector. My protection came from using a Nite Ize belt holster made of ballistic nylon with a flap. I do have a line across the front of the phone from wear of putting it in or out of the holster but it doesn't detract from the appearance. The phone has been dropped on occasion on a variety of surfaces with no damage to the screen.
As has been noted, YMMV. FWIW, I have moved on to the Moto X Pure and use the same type holster along with the plastic bumper that came with the phone. No drops yet but am thinking about getting a tempered glass cover.
i had a zagit but got tired of the dull screen so I removed it...glad i did and haven't scratched the screen yet
I gave up on screen protectors. They are expensive, difficult to put on the right way without getting dust underneath, and the glass ones are so fragile. Last one I tried literally snapped in my hand trying to align it to the screen. Something that fragile will not provide much protection even though it looks good.
I use a random tempered glass screen + an otterbox defender with the built in screen protector removed.
I have this case. $15 at a stand at the mall. Rubberized layer to wrap the phone, tough tight fitting outer shell with a grippy back, bumpers on the corners and raised rubber around the screen bezel to keep the screen from making contact with the floor in case of face down drops or rubbing in the pockets. Only complaint i have with it is the holes for the volume and power buttons are a little too flush, making it a bit of a pain to get used to, but adjusting wasnt so bad after a while. And again the case is tight fitting, so getting it on and off is a minor headache but worth it. Tested drops from arms length above my head (I'm 5'9", so say about 6'8"), not a single mark on the screen. Just cracked the plastic above the volume buttons. No need for screen protector here though a tempered one would be nice. However I agree the loss in sensitivity with a screen protector on is not worth the hassle of actually applying it and risking the nasty bubbles. At $5+ a pop, having them eventually peel at the edges and get dirt under it can cause more damage than normal wear and tear if your careful enough
I never use screen protector.

Agree. See no point in the tempered glass protectors when they're not gonna prevent your glad from shattering. I just use those $10 screen protectors from Walmart just to prevent little scratches from dirt and stuff. And really, I only use screen protectors now because I realize how" wet" and harder to slide your finger across a baked screen can get. Screen protectors makes swiping e screen much smoother and easier.

I haven't. However I do have a case that has a slight bumper around the top of my screen, therefore there is no huge need for me to have one.

scratch resistance VERY CONCERNING

Ive not had this phone for even a month and have never dropped it or put it together with any hard materials like keys. I just noticed a huge scratch about an inch and a half long on the front screen.
This is extremely unnerving especially being advertised as an improved scratch resistance compared to previous model.
How can gorilla glass 5 possibly scratch never having been in contact with any hard surfaces??
It's honestly to the point where it just seems ridiculous. I've had my s7 over a year and not a single scratch and I've dropped it multiple times.
I have same experience. Im taking care of my phone a lot. I dont even put it on the table if i dont out a piece of paper under it. In pocket phone is alone. Most of the time phone is in the case and even after this care the phone have several scratches. So, yeah, the phone isnt so scratch resistant. I hope i can find some proper flagship from metal next year, because as most i love this phone, this is unnerving.
A little help is a dbrand skin. You will get a new look, no scratches, and you can hide front panel behind the glass protector.
My screen has a scratch even though I've never put my phones screen down. Back is protected by cover. The only place screen is in contact with anything is in my pocket. My previous phone had Gorilla glass 3 and scratched only after a year.
Bought the S8 today along with the Samsung Led View Cover, hope that will keep my device from scratching :fingers-crossed:
Yes the scratch resistance of the S8 is not as good as in previous models. Gorilla glass 5 seems to be a downgrade (from version 4) or Samsung hasn't really put gorilla glass on S8.
The glass of my S6 had much more resistance to scratches.
I have only the Samsung Cover Silicone , Curved screen protector dont feet and killed the touch so i take it off
Yup. The back is also supposed to be GG5. I've had a screen protector on the phone since day one. However I went ONE day without a case or skin on it, and sat it down on the table at a restaurant. Result; several micro scratches on the back. There was nothing on the table that was harder than glass, so it should not have scratched.
SO glad I put a TGSP on the front (with LOCA glue). Probably going to get a skin for the back. I had a clear on on it, but the midnight Black shows every speck of dust or bubble under the skin. My wife's Orchid Grey doesn't show dust or anything, and her clear skin is nearly invisible.
I would be interested in starting a class action lawsuit against corning. They seem to be the only ones who don't hold any accountability to produce quality parts or to accurately represent their product improvements.
they'll just deny it until the bitter end like their Note 7 debacle
I noticed some scuffing on the black frame from small debris getting trapped between the frame/body of the phone and the case causing scuffs/scratches when you move around with the phone in your pocket.

People just must not look after the phone to well ive had my s8 for 6 months no scratches nothing and its in my pocket with keys and everything also dropped it 2 meters and not a scratch dent or chip. The front is gorilla glass and the rest is lumia glass as the manual states. Dont know how anyone could scratch the s8 without immense pressure being applied.
had mine 3 months no screen protector but in a case, no marks on screen yet.

I am super careful with my phones and keep my phone in a case and carry it around in a microfiber case as I did my S7 and s6 Edge and this is the first phone that I have ever scratched and could not figure out how it scratched. I have 2 friends with S8s. And both scratched uber easy. The screen should be way more scratch resistant for the price. Maybe just some of the screens are defective, but for the cost the screens should be way more durable.

The screen can get scratched (kind of worn out) if you keep the phone in your jean pocket face down (facing thighs). The stitching seams are enough to scratch it. So I have learnt to keep mine facing outwards.
Honestly, this is the saddest part of the phone. Ever since I got my S8 I have been taking damn good care of it and used a case since day one and at least 4 times per week I wipe it with a microfibre cloth, immediately wipe away fingerprints and still after all this, mini scratches all over the front glass. Even my iPhone 6 which I used for 3 years had better scratch resistance.
I'm in the same situation. I got mine at the end of august and have a scratch an inch long from the top to the bottom.
