Well, I wanted to install TWRP, right? I thought, "Easy enough, I'll just flash this thing and be done."
The phone works, I'm on it now. I ended up with it updating to this stupid 5.0.1 that a lot of things won't work.
I really need a recovery. I get an error to use Samsung recovery software instead.
I then have to go into download mode, then hit cancel before it'll boot.
I'll reply to this with more information on my phone, including build number and such.
Thank you guys very much ahead of time.
I did have to use kingroot to get root access with this firmware.

I have tried and tried several solutions all over the place to update. Nothing is working or maybe I am not understanding any of it. PLease please please someone help me with step by step process of updating the phone without having to unroot and root. It was days of efforts for me to get it rooted. would hate to go through that again. I am a rookie at this, so please bear with me if I am not able to understand some super techy words.
here's what I have:
One S from t-mobile.
Rooted. Have TWRP and SuperSu. Also have Titanium Backup Pro (set to backup weekly).
I think I am on stock ROM (how do I check that?)- unsure.

You need to have stock recovery to flash the ota update and it shouldn't remove root.

Pardon me for my ignorance. But...
1. How do I get stock recovery?
2. what next, lets say I get stock recovery. Do I run the OTA update? and then.... do you mind laying out some steps for me please. TIA.
Here for stock recovery, http://www.mediafire.com/view/?d8velqlrjor0wx9. Flash it with the all in one toolkit. Get update and let it update for you.
Hey man if u need some help holla my way I can walk you through it you want it rooted w/ a custom ROM its just better that way
Sent from my One S using xda premium
Not getting it still.
This is what i did.
1. I have phone connected to laptop. USB debugging on. on Data mode (as opposed to charge only).
2. downloaded stock recovery from the link specified above. it is called recovery.img. I have it on my computer's c drive. Also transferred it to phone's download directory. wasn't sure where i store it.
3. downloaded all in one kit on my pc.
4. clicked on "your own recovery". The phone went to bootloader mode. Meanwhile, my pc came up with a dialog box for me to pick recovery. i chose the recovery from my c: drive (phone was not even an option to pick from). it keeps asking to burn recovery.img to D drive (my dvd). no other option for me to chose. doesn't matter what i hit - burn or cancel. it keeps asking me the same thing.
something is not right.
Search for 'fastboot flash recovery recovery_signed.img' then...
I've tried rebooting my t-mobile g2x because I bought it off of someone and he didn't tel me the wifi wasn't turning on you just darkened up like it was going to but nothing happenes I also tried to turn on the hot spot and it just says error I've tried internally booting and then I did the power and volume up button and I was expecting to get to the recovery mode but afterwards my phone started up and it had me put all my email info in so idk if I'm not doing it right ? You can try a couple of things.
1. Use ROM for recovery nvflash installer. This rebuilds the phone from scratch.
2. If 1 does not work then use the offline installer method to reinstall 2.3.4 from kdz file for it (v21y).
Post results.

Idk if its my phone messing up but when I click on the download link its has one thing to clink on and I do it it just reloads the same page
You're gonna have to use your computer to do this. Probably better to download from there?
I don't have a computer is there any other way?

Hi all,
I have read as much as I can, and am now totally confused.
Some threads tell me that I shouldnt root my phone because I will hard brick it, some say - yep go ahead!
The problem is there are so many guides - and I cant find the one that matches my phone - firmware and kernel - and I dont want to brick it (obviously)
I have a Samsung S2 GT I9100
Android 4.1.2
Baseband XI9100XXLS9
Kernel 3.0.31 - 889555
[email protected] #3
SMP PREEMPT
KST 2013
Build xxxxxx.I9100XWLSH
My problem is that I cant find an up to date guide that mentions my build with my version of Android? or maybe I cant see for looking !
please direct me to a guide I can follow for my phone (without hard bricking it) .....................and if you are feeling generous maybe a recommendation for a custom ROM!
thanks again for your help!
well I tried it - and failed.
I used Philz kernal just to root the phone and I have ended up with a screen that seems to be ghosting the samsung logo and just stays grey, I cant get back into the recovery mode to fix it either, I can press down volume, and power and enter button, but the up button, power and enter button isnt working.

I've just received my OTA KitKat 4.4 update on my HTC One, but it won't successfully install. i tap "install now" on my phone, the phone reboots and goes into TWRP recovery. i found the zip file, flashed it with TWRP, and it seems to have unpacked it because i now have a file with the same name as the KitKat 4.4 update zip file that contains a "META-INF" file and a "patch" file, but when i reboot system, i'm still running Android 4.3 with Sense 5.0 according to Settings>About>Software information. what is going on? am i doing something wrong? do i need to relock my bootloader? uninstall TWRP? if i do need to uninstall TWRP, then how? i don't even see it listed under Settings>Apps. i was really looking forward to running KitKat and i've been trying to update to it all night, so much so that my wife is now mad at me for spending so much time "playing" with my phone! if anyone can help me, i would greatly appreciate it. i'm a newb when it comes to TWRP, but i've had an HTC Tilt, Tilt 2, and a Vivid, all unlocked, rooted, and with custom roms. i was even trying to learn to cook my own roms for my Vivid, so i know (basically) what i'm doing, but i am familiar with using the "install from internal SD card" option in recovery, which i don't even have anymore. now when i enter my bootloader, scroll to "recovery" and select it, my phone boots up into TWRP recovery, which i'm not liking thus far. seems like more of a pain than the simple "install from internal SD" process that i'm familiar with. i'd much prefer to use the process i'm familiar with than TWRP if that is possible. if anyone can help me with any of these issues, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do so. reply to this post, pm me, or email me. doesn't make any difference to me. i'll take any help or advice i can get at this point!

Hey all!
In the past I've posted on XDA and have gotten amazing help and direction. I understand this isn't where you post "tech support" questions I'm just giving the backstory and asking for direction as to where I can go to get help.
I just can't deal with trying to root my phone anymore, I've literally wasted days and I can't afford wasting any more time. I feel like such a n00b here but all I can hear in my head is..."help me XDA, you're my only hope". I have searched the forums, tried so many walkthroughs, etc. Its just that each thread seems to have so many pages of comments and I start to follow along and then something gets posted, I end up following bad advice, makin
g it worse and usually that attempt ends with me getting stuck in a bootloop, so I do a factory reset and start over...again. Its like the movie "Groundhog Day". This might sound stupid but does anyone offer a video service or chat that would be willing to walk me through this? I imagine this would take a few minutes for someone who knows what they're doing. Is there a website that offers a service like this?
At this point I just want to delete EVERYTHING I have on my PC that has anything to do with rooting my phone and start from scratch. I've confused the sh!t out of myself with all the "stuff" I've downloaded and I don't know how to or want to attempt to unravel it, that would be too frustrating and cost me more time. The best option for me is to nuke it all and start with a clean slate. If anyone knows where I should go or is interested in helping me PLEASE contact me. I'm losing my mind here! All the details are below.
Thanks for any and all help/advice, it is REALLY appreciated.

Phone:
Sprint Galaxy S5 Sport (SM-G860P)
What I'm trying to accomplish:
- Remove all the Sprint related crap/bloatware
- Turn on the native wifi hotspot
- How the EFF do I install a ROM without wiping everything
- Use Link2SD to partition and move programs to 64GB card
- Periodically create full backups on my Google drive (nandroid?)
- Eliminate the damn camera lag
- Stop saving stuff to the effin device and just use my SD card (pictures, etc.)
- When it is all set up I want to create a backup so that if anything goes wrong again I can just load the backup back onto the phone with all the same sesttings. (Although I would need to know how to do that without effin it up again...which I have)
Latest:
Just did a factory reset (AGAIN) and I'm just going to leave it alone until I can get help. I just want a clean slate to start all over again, get this working correctly and move on with my life.

Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. To root see post #20 in this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s5/help/gs5-active-sport-t2830838/page2 Chainfire has a cf-autoroot for your device. You need to extract the zip you download and flash the .tar.md5 file in odin.
Thanks!
Unfortunately I've tried it as well as MANY others, and screwed it up.
OK, let's start with the basics.
When you connect your device with odin running, does odin recognize your device?
What happens when you flash the .tar.md5 file in odin? Make sure re-partition is not checked and that you're flashing it in the AP slot.
If odin fails, are you using the usb ports in the back of your pc? Have you tried different cables?
Thread closed.
