Hello,
I am new to the world of Androids. I came from a Blackberry Bold. I now have a Nexus S. It is a pretty nice phone. It's laggy and the battery dies too quick, but I can deal. My keyboard stops working while in the horizontal mode and the internet browser doesn't seem to work sometimes. I have to reboot this beast more than I had to reboot any other phone i've owned. I still really like it though, it's so sexy!!
I am using a Mac and I am trying to root my phone using this guide; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878446
Steps 1-6 seemed to work well, but step 7 wants me to select "recovery" while in the "bootloader/fastboot mode". When I select it, I am left with the little green android man with an exclamation mark in a triangle over his head.
Any help moving forward would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to learn and understand how all of this works but I am struggling quite a bit. I feel old!
Phone Facts:
Nexus S
Android version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: I9020AUCKB2
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-g1d030a7
[email protected]#1
Build number: GRI54
Again, thanks for any help.
Anyone have any idea?
Ok, so I am a tiny bit farther than I was this morning!! haha
I am using the newest version of recovery clockwork, but when I try to run it, it says this;
-bash: /Users/george/Desktop/adb-fastboot/recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.4-crespo.img: Permission denied
Anyone have any idea what to do??
A couple of pointers.
First, check if you moved the img to the adb-fastboot folder. As it says in the guide it should be in the tools folder.
~/Desktop/androidsdk/tools/fastboot flash recovery ~/Desktop/androidsdk/tools/recovery-clockwork-3.0.0.0-crespo.img
Second, try running the command as "sudo" if you have permissions problems. Otherwise you may have to use chmod, but by the sounds of it you might not be ready for that...
Finally, and maybe most important, give superboot a shot. If you've already unlocked the bootloader its essentially a one-click root solution. Its discussed at the top of the guide you posted a link to.
Let us know how it works out for you.
FYI: for future use (and other users) too, when you select recovery and the android has an exclamation mark, hold power and press the volume up to go into the stock recovery.
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I am at work so I can't give your suggestions a try. I was going to try that Superboot root method but it says it is only for the GRH78C for 2.3.2. I have the GRI54 with 2.3.3. Is this going to make a difference?
I tried to update my G2x yesterday via the LG updater tool. Long story short, it froze on the S/W Updating screen and neither T-Mo or LG support could assist in getting it fixed.
I read that it was pretty hard to brick the G2x so I decided to give it an all out effort to resurrect it, especially after the T-Mobile tier two tech support told me there was nothing that could be done, if what he had tried didn't work, the phone was toast. I am just a woman who is more technical than the average woman my age, but I don't mod my phones much in general. I tweak.
I will list what all I have tried, as much in order as I can recall since starting this Friday at noon, don't laugh! (oh the phone is currently working, only 3g and with this Wind ancient looking version)
Flashed CWM on phone (tried all versions at some point in the process)
Totally cleared phone
Tried KDZ_FW_UPD_EN.exe to flash V21E_00 and V21Y_00 Neither would work
Flashed Cyanogenmod 7.1.0.1 Worked, looked beautiful, wifi but no cell service, no baseband, no IMEI
Flashed kdz WIND V11h - everything working but only at 3g
I thought if I got back to something that would put back in a baseband and my IMEI, I could find my way back to the most current update. I can't seem to flash anything new though.
I've tried this :http://forum.xda-developers.com/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=1149
and this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25321356
Both awesome and helpful posts but I can't get anything other than this V11h!!
Help! And thanks! And I am sorry if this seems ridiculously easy, I think my brain quit working about 6 hours ago!
Oh, my question is, how do I go about getting it at least back to where it was? (Never updated from stock, March of 2011)

I'm by no means an expert -- an advanced amateur, maybe -- but I'll do my best.
What exactly were you trying to update when you bricked the phone? You said you were using the LG updater tool, but what exactly were you trying to do? Was your phone already rooted prior to the attempted update? Had you made any modifications to your phone or were you running stock? That may help us get to the root of your problem.
Are you still able to get into the S/W update screen using the directions in the PDF you attached? (Ie: if you remove the battery, hold both volume buttons, and then plug in the USB, does your phone turn on and go into software update mode?) If you can get it into this mode, you should be able to flash the stock TMobile ROM using NVFlasher as in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
This may get you back to step one, and you can try again. Or maybe at that point, someone more knowledgeable will come around with better advice.
Good luck.
Thanks for your quick reply!
I was trying to uh...update to 2.3.4 Gingerbread to hopefully help resolve some minor but longstanding issues I had had with my phone. Mainly, the random reboot and powering off I was really getting sick of.
My phone was not rooted prior to this. I was running stock.
Yes, I can still get into the S/W updater screen following the instructions in the .pdf I posted.
And funny you should post this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1056847
That is where I originally started when my phone first froze. I have tried to flash to stock using the NV flasher right before I posted the original question. It didn't do a thing and that's when I threw my hands up and decided I needed help!

heh... I can totally relate to throwing your hands up. I just started tinkering with my phone a couple of months ago, and the first night, I spent from 10:00pm until about 5:00am just trying to get Cyanogenmod installed. It was frustrating, but after a lot of reading and re-trying, I finally got it to work.
Okay, when you run NVFlasher, do you get any messages at all? Once you click one of the buttons to flash the phone, I believe a DOS window should popup showing you the status of the flash, whether there are errors while flashing or if it completed successfully. If there are errors, be sure you have the proper APX driver installed, which should be included with the NVFlasher package. What OS are you using on your PC? Windows XP? 7? When you have the phone plugged into the USB and the S/W update screen is showing, you should see "'NVIDIA USB Boot-recovery" listed in your windows device manager.
lol...10pm to 5am eh? Sounds like me, I was (sounds crazy) noon Friday until 2am Sat and started up again around 9am and well...here I sit at 3 am my time, with a few breaks thrown in!
When I run NV flasher, it all goes smoothly. It looks totally complete, no errors. And I am familiar with the errors, the first few hours I had nothing but errors and dead ends. I have the proper APX driver for sure, I thankfully, run XP on this computer. And yes to the "'NVIDIA USB Boot-recovery" listed in your windows device manager. "
Scratching your head like me? I don't want to do Cyanogenmod again, which is what I am tempted to do, thinking now that I have the baseband back, the cell phone service would work. I really just want my phone back the way it was, albeit, updated..ok, so not exactly the way it was!
Currently on phone, so no links. But in other lg device forum on xda there is the "offline updater method" of kdz flashing. It tricks lg updater into using a custom kdz and not to check online. Look for v21y.kdz and use that. Its 2.3.4.
If you can get it working with the old wind mobile rom all you have to do is use the official lg tool from their website and it will update to the latest version for you I had the same problems you are talking about and the only thing I could get to work was the lg offline update tool and flashing the old wind mobile rom after i got that working just went to lg and used their program and it updated me to new baseband an 2.3.4.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25116859
This is what you will have to do. It took me a while to figure it out. But when you have the programs and files you need all downloaded and setup it works without being online. It worked for me once I figured it out. I had to read it a few times and do some searching for all the files but they are out there. If you do not find them via this site Google it. Good luck.

Awesome! What finally worked for you?
Hmmm...can I even remember?? My brain is still swimming in downloads and error messages!
I had tried the offline updater earlier, but the "Automatic Offline Procedure.vbs" file never would load, I kept getting an error on line 25. I downloaded it all again from other links, and this time I thought it would go through but I kept getting an error at line 70 something.
I finally read "instruction.docx" (the steps that the vbs file was going to have me follow) lol
I turned the windows enabler to the ON position.
I also disabled my LG modem first as I had read that on the .pdf file I posted earlier and it had allowed me to get Wind on there.
I disabled my firewall and anti virus temporarily also.
I opened the UpTestEX_mod2_marwin.exe set it to "3GQCT" and "EMERGENCY" and chose the V21y kdz
I hit "Normal web upgrade test"
Then start upgrade or something and the LG updater tool opened, it found my phone, I think I pressed Start upgrade or whatever again, waited, held my breath too long, passed out, woke up VOILA! DONE!
That is a VERY rough translation of what I did, I have had so many trial and error attempts and variations of settings, files etc, that I don't know what really finally worked! But thank you for your encouragement last night, because I was really about to give up for good (thus the last ditch "when all else fails ASK for help" post) and throw not only my hands up, but the phone across the room!
Now I am finally getting around to re loading my apps and all my settings, ringtones, etc etc etc. I don't know if I now love or hate my G2x!
Thanks to everyone for their replies! And everyone else who posts here and helps so many novices like me!
Glad to hear your back up and running.

I have literally tried everything I could possibly think of to get v11h updated to v21e or even v21y and nothing is working for me. I am stuck at the part where the phone begins to update, but disconnects at param(5) and then fails after that. I have tried every method and tutorial that I could find and I am still searching. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

I ended up buying a new phone cause I couldn't figure it out. I've tried every method with no luck. The phone just doesn't want to take the update for whatever reason. Other G2x I've tried worked but for some reason not the one I own. Hahaha

What does "disabling the LG modem" mean?
I have a Wind P999 phone with the V11h base band. Of course, the LG updater tool says that I have the latest baseband.
I tried updating using the KDZ tool but that did not work. for me.
I tried pushing a T-mobile Stock Rom too. It did not updated the baseband. LG tool still says I have the latest update.
I have also tried the hack of using the LG Updated with a local shttp server. But even then, when I pressed the "Normal web upgrade test" and "Start update" nothing happens.
Am I supposed to get some feedback while the upgrade happens? How long does this process take?
I am using Window 7 Ultimate 64-bit. All antivirus disabled.
Anything else I could try?
BTW, I have been able to revive a bricked p999 T-Mobile phone that I got from Ebay. it has the stock T-MObile Rom with the March 2012 baseband and software version v21y. This Wind phone is just testing me
I have tried and tried several solutions all over the place to update. Nothing is working or maybe I am not understanding any of it. PLease please please someone help me with step by step process of updating the phone without having to unroot and root. It was days of efforts for me to get it rooted. would hate to go through that again. I am a rookie at this, so please bear with me if I am not able to understand some super techy words.

Pardon me for my ignorance. But...
1. How do I get stock recovery?
2. what next, lets say I get stock recovery. Do I run the OTA update? and then.... do you mind laying out some steps for me please. TIA.
Here for stock recovery, http://www.mediafire.com/view/?d8velqlrjor0wx9. Flash it with the all in one toolkit. Get update and let it update for you.
Hey man if u need some help holla my way I can walk you through it you want it rooted w/ a custom ROM its just better that way

Not getting it still.
This is what i did.
1. I have phone connected to laptop. USB debugging on. on Data mode (as opposed to charge only).
2. downloaded stock recovery from the link specified above. it is called recovery.img. I have it on my computer's c drive. Also transferred it to phone's download directory. wasn't sure where i store it.
3. downloaded all in one kit on my pc.
4. clicked on "your own recovery". The phone went to bootloader mode. Meanwhile, my pc came up with a dialog box for me to pick recovery. i chose the recovery from my c: drive (phone was not even an option to pick from). it keeps asking to burn recovery.img to D drive (my dvd). no other option for me to chose. doesn't matter what i hit - burn or cancel. it keeps asking me the same thing.
something is not right.
Search for 'fastboot flash recovery recovery_signed.img' then...
Hey Guys,
When I try to boot in Odin mode the tablet just boots with RECOVERY BOOTING....then hangs...

Android
I was rooted then i wanted to flash stock and it went downhill from there. It flashed last night but wifi wasnt working. I really dont want to take it to verizon. I have revived but the three button salute doesnt let me get into download mode. Please help Its insuranced but will they cover it since it has Custom on it?
Edit: Screen is not faint and the device is working.
So reading some other threads where people encountered this problem. Two main solutions
1. bad recovery flash, it needs to be flashed again.
2. Can you still plug in the tablet and charge it? If you can do that the other recommended solution was burning the battery out until dead, basically forcing a full on restart of everything, then plugging in the device letting it recharge then trying to boot into download mode again. They say pull the battery, but since you can't do that you need to burn it down to 0. As long as you can charge your tablet you aren't lost. If you can get into download mode after trying that flash stock firmware from odin. Then start the process from step 1, clean start.
Either way, I wouldn't panic yet. Well don't panic at all. Panicking just makes mistakes and you aren't anywhere near the hopeless stage where you have to bring it back to verizon yet. I'm sure other people here will have other ideas as well and some people may have had the same problem. Just breathe. Burning the battery will give you some relaxing time lol. Pretty confident it can be fixed.

Thats why ^^^^^^^ i love this great community because people help each other and positive feedback rather than negativity. I have modified dozens of device over the years and this device is my first big fail as of now but I will let it die. What gets me is Verizon and ATT know that locking their device makes people mad and yet they continue to do whats best for business. I someday would love to reach dev status. How would I flash the recovery without download mode?

I also have the Stock Rom decompiled and am trying to make a Debrick IMG to get the tablet to boot from SDext to get to download mode then im out of the woods but i need to find out what imgs to use. There are a lot of awesomesauce devs out there (including you) that do amazing things for our devices. Mattlgroff saved my RAZR Maxx and Trident made the ally a great phone for its time. It might not seem sometimes especially how people act by bickering but we really do appreciate the hard work of development across the board of devices. End Story

the first one sounds so, that the recovery Image was/is the wrong one. This matched also the 2nd one : Stock, but Wifi is not working. If you flash e.g. on P905 the H3 Imagage and after that the C3 kernel, Wifi doesn't work in this status also anymore. I'll believe, you've flashed a wrong image.
To change anything / or the repair the Tab, you must have the possibility to have an access to the Tablet.
What does you've try?
Fastboot / Recovery-Menu? [This one failed -if I've understood you right]
Download-Menu?
Up to which point does your Tab start's up ? Doers you've any access?

Hmmm we definitely need someone with a 905 to post the partition info if you're going to try to build a debrick.img. Have you used search to see if anyone maybe already has? I only have the 900 and I was pretty sure they were different. Just glancing at this program I'm guessing you'd need boot.img since it's going to basically provide a bootloader as the phone hops from internal to external looking for a way to boot. I've never used it though so I don't want to tell you the wrong thing :x

The Tablet has to be completely dead and then you can charge it to odin cause of the recovery booting ...... but draining the battery clears RAM and then i can get into download mode. Its still better than a 750 dollar paperweight just need to fix wifi. Its almost set up this way and takes longer to fix the device if you are kind of in a hurry. I was rooted but unfortunately have no safestrap so i could not back up my image It was in a bricked state and was corrected by troubleshooting android related problems and flashing in Odin. The only question besides the wifi problem is even though i flashed Stock firmware, my device shows up as Custom????? Any Ideas its not tripped i know that much.

So the battery trick did reset it? Score! lol. I've actually had two friends have to do something similar with other android devices. So you flashed stock onto it (thank god) and now the only problem remaining is no wifi? I know we had a thread about no wifi for our specific device in the forums. Search for that. It seemed like people were able to fix it in that thread.

Which this error ( I've select the GBT - file, but the Tab was buyed in Austria > so I need the ATO ) I've triggered KNOX After download the correct FW-File, odin could flash successfully.
If you change temporary the Kernel for root, Wifi is no working , too...

If odin failed during flashing, press one time Reset in odin, dis-/ connect the USB cable from the TAB and you can continue with odin. During next flash, you received a lot of red text lines, that the progressbar indicator is not correct, but this one you can ignore. Urgent is, that odin said : PASSED at the end.
In you case, I would make direct after successfull flash -> boot into the EM Menu and initiate a factory reset

I had NB1 installed and it was working then i used Repair Assistant and it has recovery booting and the boot logo with Custom android. They wont cover it for insurance, i might as well just damage and pay the deductible. I have tried everything and it results in a brick.
From where is this image ND repair assistant ? The bootlogo is changed via root very easy. For that nobody needs a total ROM flash. It's only 1 zipfile.... Hopefully the repair assistant does not has make a recreate partitions....
let go out from the best case Which stock rom does you try to flash? The latest one?

Yes the latest build is what I flashed. I wonder if the kernel changed but right now NB1 makes it usable with no WiFi or bluetooth.
Which Rom does you mean exactly with NB1 ?
the only one, which I've found - which contains NB1 at the end is:

Why you don't try to flash the K1 Rom? [See above].
If I think about my Galaxy S3 LTE : I have the old Bootloader ( without Knox ) on the device -> if I flash the new System / Kernel without the new Bootloader, I'll have also a problem with a nonworking Wifi ...

The software is flashed and notice the system sleeps and screen wont turn back on until i three finger salute. Boot Logo has no unlocked symbol but About phone displays Custom. Also Wifi/Bluetooth issue which I could not find. If i can fix the wifi and bluetooth i wont send into verizon. They should cover it, Odin mode displays 0x0.
Edit: Odin mode still displays SYSTEM STATUS: Custom even though I flashed the NB1 build. Wifi/Bluetooth still do not work. I have wiped data/ cache and rebooted the device. Towelroot didnt work previously but I will try with this build.
ok, first of all, go into the settings, developer and enable USB system debugging. Shut down the Tab, Hold The home key, volume down and Power. After that, the tab starts into the download mode, press volume + to continue. The screen changed. Connect the Tab with you running Odin ( check the task manager, that nothing from Kids is still running in the background. Select as PDA the K1 Firmware which was in the zip. Ending is tar.md5.
Check is Only Autogreboot and the F fuse(?) >>default settings are selected. Press Start and wait... In Odin you can following which Parton is now flashed. Hopefully Odin stopped with Passed and the Tab rebooted. If you've the wrong region rom, Odin failed at the hidden file ext4.

I have flashed it that way several times. The software flashing isn't the problem, its WiFi and Bluetooth jam and wiping data cache do not fix it. I have re downloaded the software and its a no go.

If Knox still triggered? Ill believe so. K1 is now the current FW?
Try after install TWRP , wipe normal and go into the adv. wipe settings to format / System and / Data / Cache etc..
Reflash K1 again.
How does it looks like Jam of Wifi / BT ? does you received a FC? only Interruption ?
Hey all!
In the past I've posted on XDA and have gotten amazing help and direction. I understand this isn't where you post "tech support" questions I'm just giving the backstory and asking for direction as to where I can go to get help.
I just can't deal with trying to root my phone anymore, I've literally wasted days and I can't afford wasting any more time. I feel like such a n00b here but all I can hear in my head is..."help me XDA, you're my only hope". I have searched the forums, tried so many walkthroughs, etc. Its just that each thread seems to have so many pages of comments and I start to follow along and then something gets posted, I end up following bad advice, makin
g it worse and usually that attempt ends with me getting stuck in a bootloop, so I do a factory reset and start over...again. Its like the movie "Groundhog Day". This might sound stupid but does anyone offer a video service or chat that would be willing to walk me through this? I imagine this would take a few minutes for someone who knows what they're doing. Is there a website that offers a service like this?
At this point I just want to delete EVERYTHING I have on my PC that has anything to do with rooting my phone and start from scratch. I've confused the sh!t out of myself with all the "stuff" I've downloaded and I don't know how to or want to attempt to unravel it, that would be too frustrating and cost me more time. The best option for me is to nuke it all and start with a clean slate. If anyone knows where I should go or is interested in helping me PLEASE contact me. I'm losing my mind here! All the details are below.
Thanks for any and all help/advice, it is REALLY appreciated.

Phone:
Sprint Galaxy S5 Sport (SM-G860P)
What I'm trying to accomplish:
- Remove all the Sprint related crap/bloatware
- Turn on the native wifi hotspot
- How the EFF do I install a ROM without wiping everything
- Use Link2SD to partition and move programs to 64GB card
- Periodically create full backups on my Google drive (nandroid?)
- Eliminate the damn camera lag
- Stop saving stuff to the effin device and just use my SD card (pictures, etc.)
- When it is all set up I want to create a backup so that if anything goes wrong again I can just load the backup back onto the phone with all the same sesttings. (Although I would need to know how to do that without effin it up again...which I have)
Latest:
Just did a factory reset (AGAIN) and I'm just going to leave it alone until I can get help. I just want a clean slate to start all over again, get this working correctly and move on with my life.

Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. To root see post #20 in this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-galaxy-s5/help/gs5-active-sport-t2830838/page2 Chainfire has a cf-autoroot for your device. You need to extract the zip you download and flash the .tar.md5 file in odin.
Thanks!
Unfortunately I've tried it as well as MANY others, and screwed it up.
OK, let's start with the basics.
When you connect your device with odin running, does odin recognize your device?
What happens when you flash the .tar.md5 file in odin? Make sure re-partition is not checked and that you're flashing it in the AP slot.
If odin fails, are you using the usb ports in the back of your pc? Have you tried different cables?
