imei blocking is unless they made a misstake is because the device have been reported stolen so unless your friend have long fingers or like to buy from shady dealers should contact the cellphone company and enquire who to contact to get his phone unblocked

Is there danger in giving out the IMEI?

I had a software company ask me for the IMEI for my phone - is there any issue with me giving them this number? Ultimately, what malicious activies could they perform with knowing my IMEI?
Thanks!
if they report your imei to the police as a stolen phone it's blocked and precious few ever gotten their imei off those lists making the phone useless
They could duplicate the imei number to an other device and make illegal activities using that imei number which is billed to you.
You wonder the story next

you would also have to have their same sim number for that to work.

Right!
IMEI refers to the International Mobile Equipment Identifier, a unique 15 digit code programmed into each mobile phone during production. The number holds information regarding manufacturer, model type and the approval body for the handset. The identification, bound into the IMEI when combined with the use of blacklisting and a connection the CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register, is one route to preventing stolen devices being used on authorized networks. However, if the integrity of the code relating to the communication of the IMEI with the network is not guaranteed, the device is open to attack. This is the case with many current handsets, allowing impersonation of the IMEI and again rendering this security feature ineffective and redundant.
Year 22nd Dec 2008 in Turkey, there was a police operation for cloned phones and illegally saved imei numbers... Police has arrested over 50 people and got over 10 thousand cloned phones with real imei numbers... One of the arrested told to police that they bought the imei numbers from some internet sites as packages of 1000 imei numbers... It is really harmfull to post imei numbers on the web... Be carefull while buying secondhand phones also...
That Should Sum It up
It is very important to not give to anyone your imei number. Here in Greece we had few affairs with that issue.
thank God there ain any Android Signed

Almost every phone is like this.
When the carriers developed a certain product, they could just update your phone through your software (A last patch for the phone). ? By going to system update.
The software is always limited to what your hardware's phone could do, and you should have expertise to know that.
What I meant here is, after they released a product, they would forgot it and go to the drawing board and make a more improved phone, they won't really need your phone because they are the ones who manufactured it(same for the source codes). It would be seemingly suspicious for someone to have an interest to your phone which will be outdated in a couple of months or a year.

IMEI issue with the china Phones?

I recently bought a China android phone on ebay.com. you can see the product here http://www.ebay.com/itm/-/320977989760?item=320977989760&ViewItem=
I live in India and i am not able to use the Sim on the phone. The problem is when i put the sim the phone detects carrier name but i am not able to make calls. So can this be an issue with the IMEI number. Because i have heard the the china phones does not come with genuine IMEI numbers and in Indian now its compulsory to use handsets only with the genuine IMEI numbers. So can some one please help me with this? I dont know if its an IMEI issue or something else. I contacted the seller and he said it has a genuine IMEI and he also gave me a link to change the IMEI number of needed which i know is illegal. So any help is really appreciated !! Thanks.
Cheers,
Shrikanth

[Q] Sony Z2 IMEI is other phone's

Hi, I bought locked IMEI Z2 off ebay without knowing it. short story, I got my money back but there one thing that surprise me.
the my IMEI is from other phone LG L5 to be precise and I'm pretty sure it's a Legit Z2 as well, not some chinese made knock off. I also checked my other phone that I got from new (S4, and HD2) they all got the right model.
What I want to know is, is it possible to change the IMEI number? ASFAIK you can't change xperia IMEI number because it's stored somewhere in the partition. and you can't change it because it is security signed and if you change it, would make your device completely useless or hardbricked, unlike softbricked device that you can easily fix.
imei.info
you should probably return the phone because even if you could change the IMEI, you won't be able to generate a valid IMEI for it.
Well, or you could just put another phone IMEI like he did. I don't know if its possible. I'm not condoning any illegal attempt to change IMEI of stolen phone, just acted out of curiosity. I returned the phone to seller as well.
Its a stolen device.
Whether its a knockoff or not has no relevance.
IMEI can be modified, whether intentionally or accidentally. However, because of the legal implications, no one here will teach you how to.

IMEI can be modify by some sw tools. I suspect it is not a new phone.

Cloned IMEI?

Hello,
I'm on vacation in Turkey right now and bought a SIM-card with a dataplan from Avea, without a contract.
Have been using it for about a week, and today I got this message:
864xxxxxxxxxxxxxx IMEI No'lu cihaz kayit disi oldugu icin 28/09/2015 tarihinde kullanim disi kalacaktir. Lutfen satin aldiginiz yere basvurunuz.
Which according to Google translate means:
No. unregistered IMEI 864xxxxxxxxxxxxxx device that is on the outskirts of use will remain on 28/09/2015 . Please contact the place of purchase, please .
Isn't this very strange? I can confirm that the IMEI number in the text is the same as in my phone.
I'm from Sweden, and never had any issue of this kind before.
So I googled a bit and it seems the Turks are getting it every now and then, and they're talking about cloned IMEI's and such.
Should I be worried?
Its not about cloning .Every single phones imported get imei registration İn Turkey, the companies importing the phones handle the registration.Since you are a tourist in Turkey your phone is not registered and you have 2 months to register the imei, after 2 months, your imei will be blacklisted and you wont able to use it. I think your visit in Turkey wont be that long, so you are nothing to worry about.Have a nice vacation and welcome to Turkey any time
I think this is a protection to make the dealing of stolen phones unattractive
