[Q] Sony Z2 IMEI is other phone's - Security Discussion

Hi, I bought locked IMEI Z2 off ebay without knowing it. short story, I got my money back but there one thing that surprise me.
the my IMEI is from other phone LG L5 to be precise and I'm pretty sure it's a Legit Z2 as well, not some chinese made knock off. I also checked my other phone that I got from new (S4, and HD2) they all got the right model.
What I want to know is, is it possible to change the IMEI number? ASFAIK you can't change xperia IMEI number because it's stored somewhere in the partition. and you can't change it because it is security signed and if you change it, would make your device completely useless or hardbricked, unlike softbricked device that you can easily fix.

you should probably return the phone because even if you could change the IMEI, you won't be able to generate a valid IMEI for it.

Well, or you could just put another phone IMEI like he did. I don't know if its possible. I'm not condoning any illegal attempt to change IMEI of stolen phone, just acted out of curiosity. I returned the phone to seller as well.

Its a stolen device.
Whether its a knockoff or not has no relevance.

IMEI can be modified, whether intentionally or accidentally. However, because of the legal implications, no one here will teach you how to.

the best thing happened that u got ur money back, cause you'll never make it work with an other IMEI other then its IMEI.

IMEI can be modify by some sw tools. I suspect it is not a new phone.

My Vario 2 was stolen, reassurance needed

My Vario 2 was stolen on Sunday and I'm still very upset about it. Midday on Monday the phone was blacklisted and the SIM card was blocked. To blacklist my phone ( ) I got the IMEI code off the box the phone came in. The only thing I'm concerned about is when I had an Orange E200 smartphone the IMEI on the box was different to the IMEI on the phone, confirmed when I tried to unlock the phone on www.imei-check.co.uk. Is there any chance the IMEI on this phones box was wrong like on my E200's? It said on the website:
IMEI-Check said:
DO NOT USE the IMEI from the BOX as it may be different from that of the phone.

Is the difference in IMEI numbers quite common, or was it only a problem with early smartphones? I dread to think that they've stolen my phone and can still use it (if the dumb chavs can figure it out) . Thanks for any advice, I've now just got to find a way to get the PDA/Phone replaced
Anybody? No? DUST.
Would T-Mobile have on record the IMEI of the phone the sim was used with? I just want to be 100% sure the phone is blocked.

t-mobile will be able to see every phone's IMEI that SIM has been in, so they should be ble to get teh right one barred
Well, its not really reassurance. Its the same way about locking down laptops with a bios passwords. When a thief steals something, they'll do one of two things with it, 1)keep it for themselves, 2)sell it quickly. If you lock down your phone to the point that its unusable, they will go with option 2 and scam someone on Ebay or some other way. They get paid and bail, the buyer gets a phone that won't work and no way to track the thief who probably used a fake/stolen paypal account.
Can anyone confirm HardSPL Version 7 (2.10.olipro) is the latest version of hardSPL? . I need to find a download link.

IMEI changed at repair -Legal or not?

Before the default question is assumed - no I DON'T want to change the IMEI!
HD2 was sent to HTC repairer, and came back with a different IMEI but same serial number. Looks like they've reprinted the battery-compartment label as it matched the software readout. BUT - and here's the rub - the box and paperwork no longer match the phone.
Question is, could this give rise to legal issues, particularly if/when I sell the phone?
Should I demand that it's put right.
Incidentally, while they were at it they managed to convert a sim-free phone into a branded/simlocked one. I imagine the repairers replaced the mobo with an incorrect one. I can fix the branding, thanks to this site's howtos, but not the IMEI issue.
I don't know what country you're in, however here in the UK it is illegal to change your IMEI and can result in up to 5 years in prison.
I would therefore go to the repairer and ask what is going on. I presume you went to a reputable person. Though they would be unlikely to do this.
Maybe get law enforcement involved, as a crime has been committed.
I'd contact HTC first, and find out what is going on...Odds are they have given you a different handset, and just moved over the Software number. Call HTC is should all be logged and accessible by there call center staff.
About what I thought
It's the official UK HTC repairer. They say the IMEI is different because a replacement board was fitted. -Well OK, but then why did they reset the serial number but not the IMEI? And, why leave it with mismatched labels? If that is the only resolution when a board is changed, they urgently need to look-at their procedures.
"Thank you for your reply. According to our system, your phone is branded to O2 network but it has not got a SIM lock. We have replaced a motherboard in your phone and that is why the IMEI number in the menu of your phone does not match with this one form underneath of the battery. HTC is legally obliged to lock this phone. We can not unlock this phone without the expressed permission of the network provider."
Which tells me that firstly, they didn't read what I said properly. Secondly they are saying that they knew the phone was supplied to them as unlocked, but have locked it nevertheless. At least, that is the way it reads.
I'm getting onto Trading Standards about it.
Thx for advice, will let you know how this pans-out.

The only reason to change a phone IMEI is because the original one is blacklisted. If the IMEI is blacklisted then you are probably dealing with a stolen/lost phone and you should send it back to where it came from. The factory IMEI should be visible on the original box (which I guess you don't have if its a stolen/lost phone). It should also be printed in tiny characters somewhere on the SIM tray.
edit: I just read your other thread and this is a blacklisted imei phone. You should never buy blacklisted imei phones, there are a lot of reasons but the most important one: By buying a blacklisted phones on ebay you are supporting phones thieves. If the IMEI was blacklisted its for a good reason, not because the phone was apparently a demo phone...

Scammed - IMEI Changed

I got a used oneplus 7 pro as gift my dad a while back. I have recently realized that the IMEI of the phone has been tampered with as the IMEI mentioned on back of the phone does not corresponds with the one shown inside the phone. I have searched IMEI shown by the phone and it is registered to some GFIVE phone. Due to the current tax policies of my government on imported phone, the previous owner has probably changed it's IMEI to that of cheaper phone to avoid paying tax. The phone didn't come with a box so the only IMEI that I have is the one written on the back of the phone. I have three questions
1. Is there a way to validate that the IMEI written on back is in fact the actual IMEI of the phone?
2. The phone is dual sim so why there is only one mentioned on the back? If there should be two then is there a method to determine the second IMEI number?
3. Is it possible to reset the phone to it's original IMEI?
Thanks
They even change stickers on the back.
I think you are from Pakistan as its a common practice here.
Phone will run fine whatsoever and will update fine with new softwares.

Yes i am and the IMEI i am talking about is engraved in the back of the phone
Hello
Attention it seems strange to me that you have the IMEI code on the back, no matter the country normally the IMEI code is never encrusted on the phone because it is the identity of the phone, this code in the wrong hands can cause worries, notably to use insurance or guarantees. In other words, nothing proves that this device is not directly or indirectly linked to an offense. (Counterfeiting, theft, insurance scam, etc.)
Yes maybe the back of the phone is changed, have you checked for changed back. There must be gap in the phone if back is changed

If the IMEID is engraved on the back of the phone, you might have a T-Mobile version that was obtained in the US.
In the US the T-Mobile version has that engraved on the phone back.
You should go into "Settings" -> "About Phone".
You will be able to see the model.
That is the first step to see what phone you actually have.

Same with mine.
MODERATOR'S ANNOUNCEMENT!
XDA doesn't allow guides, tools, discussions about changing or editing the IMEI. Exceptions to this policy are sofware wise IMEI spoofing/masking and everything about restoring original IMEI/EFS.
I've cleaned this thread from posts that do not comply with above policy and e.g. suggested to contact whom-so-ever.
Stay safe and stay healthy!

If the IMEID does not match what is on the back then they have done something with the IMEID and I don't have a solution for you.

IMEI is different and showing it's a Sony Ericsson SPIRO W100 phone

Hi there,
So I recently bought a "T-Mobile" OnePlus 7 Pro second-hand. Now, the problem is, I'm in Canada and it's locked to T-Mobile. I should be able to unlock it, but the IMEI looks like it's been changed to a different phone. I'm not sure why it's been changed, but is there a way I can restore the original one? The original IMEI is on the back of the phone and I've checked it and it's not blacklisted, so I don't know the original intention of changing it.
Could someone let me know?
Thank you

Unfortunately imei changing is illegal in some form in most countries you won't find much help on here with that. We don't support imei changing on xda. Unfortunately even if it is too go back to the proper one. Thst is quite odd. T-mobile still won't unlock it. You have to follow a stringent set of rules they have in place. There are really no unlock services for this device either. I've been looking myself. Every one claims they can. But then you read from there. Even the way I tried almost ruined mine
Check eBay, there's lots of services available. Just give the seller the IMEI number listed on the back, they should be able to change it no problem. Mine cost $20 to have done.
