screen on time - Samsung Galaxy J7 Questions & Answers

Hello everybody if only anyone on you can share with us his screen on time and battery use

I usually get 8h30 of screen on time with regular use (internet, few games and so on), I will get screenshots at the end of the day. This phone is amazing, never seen a phone have a battery life as good as a tablet lol.

i can get more than 7H i'm in stock rom rooted i use greenify ... i see a video on youtube with 10h sot i dont know how hi did it :/ but i want to do the same

10 Hours SOT.
I usually get 9 hours or 10 hours screen on time usually with wifi on and some gaming. Simply its performance is very good. Never experienced such battery life before.

I got 6h on mine with normal use. Facebook instagram search things some location not much gps. Data or wifi always on. But the thing that impresed me is not the sot but how much it took to discharge. 6 days ..omg 6 days with 6h on screen time. As you can see i still have juice left.
Forgot to say : j7 2016 25% brightness no saving no nothing. Stock.

[Q] Battery Issues

This another battery post... I'm seriously starting to think that there is something wrong with my battery. Yesterday I got a day's use only with three hours sot. I didn't even use it heavily just browsing with chrome. Right now I'm getting 9 hours and down to 65 percent. 1 hour 50 mins of just browsing with chrome. Havent used any other apps either. I'm running mahdi ROM and before I had some battery problems with cm11s battery. I don't have anything waking up my phone so no wakelocks and I haven't been playing music either.
I don't have a lot of apps open and I do use greenify. Screen brightness is below 50% for 95% of my usage time. Reception is soso as I am on At&t and for some reason I can't get good signal on 4g so I go on 3g which is better. I also use wifi quite alot.
I have been told that my Android System usage is very high and I don't know why it is doing that. I got better battery life on cm11s but it is still low in comparison to others. Other people have not even modded their system in anyway and they are getting better SOT and total battery hours.
Pictures: imgur(.)com/a/6MUy2 (Mahdi Rom) Note: I didn't want it to drain overnight because then it would have be skewed results as I would be sleeping and not using it. Hence the screenshots at 35%

Battery Life Discussion

Before purchasing, I was a little concerned about the amount of battery time between charges on the S6. I picked up the phone yesterday and was able to get 4+ hours of Screen On Time (SOT) with my first full charge. I didn't think that was too bad. I think the fact that it is a new device, I tend to "play" with it more in the beginning. I'm hoping it will get better as it settles into my routine. I still am a little concerned though as I didn't even have an hour of talk time to go along with the SOT, didn't stream music, play any games or really use any other apps. It's been quite a while since I've had a smaller sized battery in a phone I've owned so I may be hoping for too much when it comes to battery life. I had the LG G2, Galaxy S5, LG G3 and Note 4 prior to purchasing the the S6. I love the phone and don't plan on switching. I just thought I would get others opinions on it.
Battery life is bad. This is what it predicts for me. I get 15 hours basically with only chat and web browsing. I sleep off the charger and the phone loses 10-12%
Gps and playing music during a drive just gave me 4 hours. I'm trying to break the battery in by bringing it to 5% and recharging, but this is laughable.

Here's what I've got for the day
So far I'm not happy with the battery life. I'm coming from a G3, where the phone would stay at 100% for several hours, and by the end of the day would be anywhere from 30-50%. I received my S6 yesterday, got everything set back up and use the same apps as my G3, but within a couple minutes the battery was already at 99%, then 20 minutes later was in the mid 90's.
This is the first full day on a charge, with very light use, and this is what I have so far:
Taken off the charger around 6AM at 100%, and now at 7PM it's at 13%.
13 hours on battery
1h 32m SOT
I installed Greenify and GSAM battery monitor, hopefully that will help.

I think we've been spoiled by the LG batteries and then I went to the Note 4 so that doesn't help my comparison either. Today was better for me then yesterday though. Yesterday I was ready to take it back and tell them to keep it. Right now I've been off the charger for 90 mins. I'm down to 91% with 24 mins of calls and 23 mins of SOT.
So far my battery life is soso. Took off charger at 5:40am Saturday morning Eastern time. Currently at 21% with fairly light usage. Texting, little bit of Web browsing, some reading on Kindle app. I expect with normal usage I'll probably get in the 15-16 hour range. Which is uninspiring. perhaps an update will increase efficiency.
Cell standby is the #1 drain for me, comparible to many of the complaints in the main S6 forum prior to the vzw variant being released.

I think that is pretty good. Over 5 hours SOT and still 16% battery life left. Anything over 5 hours is very....very...good.
Looks to me like if they fix that cell standby bug we'll have a monster of a phone. 5 hours screen on time and its only 10% of the battery drain.... I'm curious to know if this cell standby bug is just a mistake in how battery stats are being reported.

I've seen a big improvement in battery today. No change in use. I have over 2 hours of talk and over 3.5 hours of SOT. Still have 22% and it's been 18.5 hours since the charge. My concerns are starting to go away.
Ok so here's all my info for you guys... I am on Verizon, and turned off the VOLTE calling when I got the phone based on the stuff I'd read. I had high cell standby usage. I turned it back on and it went awY to normal.levels, even with WiFi on all day and crappy signal.
I am using Nova launcher, and no theme. I do use a black background, basically a picture of a clear night sky with tons of stars. The day in the picture was a day of heavy Waze use with screen on, heavy Web surfing and some youtube. As few texts and some bacon reader.
I don't see volte calling anywhere I settings. I see "advanced calling". Is that it?

The problem doesn't seem to be SOT, but standby time. When I use the phone for an extended period of time, such as when I'm in bed for an hour, I only loose a few percent. However it seems to drain nearly as fast when it's in my pocket. This is why some get 5 hours of SOT while people like me who dont use it much are lucky to get 2 hours. Standby time seems to max out around 12-14 hours.

My Verizon S6 (64GB black) also has Cell Standby as the number one drain on the battery. It's significant compared to my Note 4, where Cell Standby is much lower on the list, and which loses a lot less battery power when idle compared to the S6. Doing a full factory reset, wiping cache doesn't change this fact on my device. Good to see that others have this issue, though I wonder if Samsung/Verizon will really do anything to address it. I love some aspects of the Galaxy S6, but the battery life is an issue for me.

Yeah, this is exactly what I see. My S6 lost 11% of battery as it idled while I slept, with Cell Standby as the largest user of battery (by far) during that time. It has to be a bug, as my Note 4 (with Lollipop) doesn't have this issue.
So my first two cycles on Friday and Saturday were pretty normal and the phone idled incredibly. Then all of a sudden the last couple of cycles (and this one I'm on now apparently) are being killed by Google Play Services, even while idle. I hate that app (not really). I wish it was more clear what within it was eating up the battery.
My experience: Got a S6 Edge from Verizon Apr 10. I was having data issues where I couldn't load pages even though it said 4G. My Cell Standby was pretty high 30%-40%. I was attributing the poor reception to the Cell Standby. They finally gave me a new phone yesterday. The data issue was fixed but my Cell Standby is still high at 30% (I turned off Advanced Calling). I'm assuming this isn't a hardware issue unless I'm really unlucky.

Battery Life & SOT

Been getting about 14 to 16 hrs of battery life and about 4 hrs of SOT for the week. Main usage is web surfing, emails, whatsapp, YouTube and music streaming, no gaming.
Two days ago, I enabled the boost+ app and optimize most apps that don't need to run at full resolution. The screen on time seems to have improved a lot. Got 5hr 56mins of SOT with 14hr 46mins battery life.
This is much better than my HTC 10 after the nougat update. SOT approx 4hrs. I have boost+ running too.
Will monitor for a few more days to see if it is a one off performance.

Pretty good life!! mine gets about 3.5 hrs SOT, and about 13 hour standby, I also have boost+ on too. Curious as to what your brightness setting is, mine about 50% with adaptive on. I am rather heavier on my battery and network, so it doesnt surprise me that you're getting better life. (mine was better when I was on holiday with a better network connection).
About 45% level with adaptive on too. I think setting boost+ to run almost every app at HD resolution, excluding photo apps, helps a lot.
Good network is key too.
I am very satisfied with battery life when on WiFi 4,5-5 hours SOT), but when on LTE I get around 3 hours of SOT. I just enabled Boost+ to see if it improves battery life at all. I don't want to enable though FullHD for apps.
Do you use location services in high accuracy mode?
Here is mine, Charged up to 96% used until now.
Battery had become a bit crazy lately after updates to tons of apps. Just updated the firmware yesterday. Will monitor again.
Hi guys, hope everyone is doing good.
I wanted to ask that from past 2-3 days I'm facing very quick battery drain on u ultra. I'm hardly getting 2.5 hrs of Sot. Phone is heating too much.
Before this I was seeing around 4 hrs+ SOT that too with 1hr+ of casual gaming. I don't know what is wrong but I'm worried. My device is heating that's all what I'm able to notice. Any suggestions are most welcome. Except this, love the device.
Thank you.
It happened to me after updates of some apps.
The only way I solved it was to shutdown the phone completely. Wait for about a minute before powering up again.
Thinking about getting the U Ultra. Do you feel that the battery life is good enough?

Actually depends on what your daily usage looks like. If I'm on holiday or the whole day at home, one charge easily lasts for 2-3 days. But at university with every sync /bt/WiFi etc enabled and 50% brightness I get about 8h with high amount of screen on time (50-80%)

I usually use the phone for 2-4 hours per day but more hours during travel.
How much does the battery drain during standby? For instance, I you leave the phone in standby during the night, how many percent does the battery decrease?
Mine loses about 4% overnight (8 hours) which I think is exceptionally good!
For me it highly depends on which ROM and which apps I have installed. Recently the battery drain was about 1%/hour (150 apps, all syncing etc on), but right now after cleaning up a bit and nstalling greenify I'm back at ~3-6% per night.
I can get the black U Ultra for €291.99 here: https://www.eglobalcentral.eu/htc-u-ultra-64gb-4g-dual-sim-sim-free-unlocked-black.html
Tested the phone yesterday at a local shop here in Sweden, felt great in the hand and I really like the design. However, the battery life may be a deal breaker. Most of the phones I have used during the last 2 years has droppped 1-3 percent during night and I usually got 6 hours SOT over 24 hours. The last phone I used with weak battery life was Nexus 6, it gave med 3-4 hours SOT during 24h and that was slightly annoying. I get the impression that U Ultra is comparable to Nexus 6 in the battery department. :-/
That's actually a very accurate comparison. I replaced my Nexus 6 with the HTC Ultra and I'm getting almost identical SOT and battery life.

I get about 24 hours of mixed usage, which means I need to charge it up every morning, but I never seem to be able to get more that 4 hours SOT. Also, the rapid charger is slower than the Nexus 6. It takes about 1 hour and 50 minutes for a full charge.
I installed and configured kernel Adiutor/CPU Kernel state #on_demand and turned off #core_4. Now my battery/system working 2 whole days before charging!
Guys if i go to optimize apps and turn it on, Wen I leave it turns off again. Is this normal? I restart the phone and I already did a factory reset because the phone was updated alot the first time I use it, but it's the same. I'm getting about 3-4 hours off sot depending on the use. Maybe less. What do you guys think?
i got 5hrs and a few mins with the first charge (light use, browsing, installing apps, tweakin settings and 35mins spotify)

Not impressed by battery timings

I'm the guy who gets every flagship as soon as they hit the market. I've been using Huawei mate 9 before and it had very impressive battery timings but it's been like 4 days since I got my s8 plus and not impressed by battery at all, it's hardly giving my 4 hours sot. I've read different threads people claiming to get 6 hours easily. I'm using it on fhd, with no extra bloatware and it's exynos variant. It also drains a lot of battery on standby like easily 15% or more overnight.

Well I thought exynos was better then our ****ty snapdragons?....just kidding...but yeah man I'm getting 6 hours easy but I can always squeeze 7 to 8 hours on screen time....my last one was 7 hours on screen time with 1 day 14 hours plus all together....i posted my recent cycle in post your battery stats thread just for proof....and I have the highest graphic setting....i don't know man I'm rocking dark theme also to help battery as intended
did u restore any app? OR use Smart Switch? Best guess is do a factory reset if there is some bad app syncing continuously.

Yep that's what I'm thinking to do, Factory reset if the problem persists.
7hrs min Sot I get and that's with 14% battery left I think I edged to 8hr 20m but forgot to screen shot. I use qhd and brightness is pretty high too. Nothing disabled at all. Maybe try a reset and use the qhd res
I installed mine (Exynos) from scratch, only putting back on the apps I need which is not many.
I have location off unless I need it, and sometimes switch to 2G as I get better signal on that. FHD+.
With Wifi on 100% of the time, 75% brightness and all the usual suspects like Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and Gmail (not snapchat), I get over 8 hours screen on time. It goes around 7.5 hours if i'm using streaming services like Netflix a lot though.
That's over 2 days as well. By bedtime on the second day, I am below 10% and need to charge.
I use "Greenify" App! Now i have 5 % drain per night
You simply cannot compare like that. "He gets 5 hours SOT so why can't I".
So many variables - signal strength, wifi, bluetooth, brightness level, auto brightness, GPS, NFC, location settings, vibration settings, how long since last charge, account sync, apps installed, apps used. They all affect battery life.
So really, as long as you're getting through a full day, it shouldn't really matter what other people get.

What problem? 4 hours SOT with the stats you posted in the OP isn't a problem.
Cellular signal is a biggie when it comes to battery life. My previous house was around 3 miles from where my current house is and the cellular was weaker and I got more battery drain in fact I remember switching to 3g from 4g to help increase battery and even 2g at times.
What brightness is your screen on? I'm easily getting 6 hours of screen on time, usually with 20-30% left after a full day (14-16 hours) of use, this is with many apps that would be considered battery drainers (Kik, Whatsapp, etc) installed. You definitely should try a factory reset, since most of battery problems this type originate from a problem that can be fixed with one
I'm certainly impressed. Auto sync on all day
I'm sure you are doing something wrong, because look at my total usage time and screen on time here.
The first picture in the attachment shows the total usage time where my Galaxy S8+ only was inactive for 2 out of those 19 hours. Yes, i was using it for 17 hours out of those 19 hours in total.
But that's not all. Take a look at the 2nd picture in the attachment where it shows my insane screen on time from those 19 hours of total usage.
And the average screen on time for me now is around 8 hours which is really good. And this is also with heavy usage.
All of this is with the highest resolution, brightness at 60-70%, Wi-Fi and Mobile Data on all the time and ofc with all kinds of apps syncing in the background.
Good thing you are within the return window, you can get a different phone that suits your needs.
Im getting 9hrs on screem time at 5% left. Fhd, good signal, wifi, data, gps, 60% brightness. A mix of calls, whats app, facebook, youtube, emails, taking photos etc. Id say heavy usage as its a new phone. But thats it, give it 6 months to a year that will probaly be 30% less efficent so around 6 hrs on screen time. Im happy atm. I always also happy the first year of owning the nexus 6p but after a year id only get about 3 hrs ost.

I would suggest that is your best option as my battery life is superb. I recall owning some mobile a few years back that had rave reviews about battery life yet mine was awful. Problem wasn't the mobile but some apps I had downloaded. Factory reset etc and removed some apps and all was good. Its a pain when this happens. :highfive:

Phew, the issue was resolved by resetting the phone and removing the second sim card since it's a dual sim variant. Now the SOT and overall performance is close to perfect. I don't know what caused it, maybe the second sim since I don't have any extra app installed besides Fbook, swiftkey or whatsapp. Thankyou all for your suggestions
HI i from India using the S8+ Exynos Variant i am also not getting the battery SOT more than 4 hours, what should i do ?

[Q] tell me if this battery statistics any good

Read till the last word or dont reply!
I was 100% at 16:00 and now its 00:00 so its 8 hours while 2:30 hours screen on time and mostly stamina mode on
so here are my results:
AR effect+camera 10 minutes
talking over the phone for 46 minutes (which isnt included in screen on time but does consume battery)
whatsapp 6 minutes.
and other apps like andoid OS and system ,instagram, a little facebook, little ebay, nothing too fancy not heavy gaming at all nor watching movies of any sort
also Itube here and there which leads to overall screen on time of 2:30
and im on 63% after a total of 8 hours with stamina mode almost always on (I turned it off here and there but only for little time)
is that any good? or should it be better?
keep in mind im on nougat 7.1.1 so battery is supposed to be quite excellent but are my results meeting the expectations or should I call Sony center?
because I tried every thing dont tell me what should I do
(repair, factory reset, FW flashing, I tried litterally every thing my battery was a lot worse to be honest and now its a little better on nougat I just wanna know if its good enough or should it be replaced (the battery)).
so please tell me my device is super debloated I disabled every single app i can disable including system apps to save battery as much as possible I hope these results are what an XZP device should have because please be honest! if its supposed to be better I will have a good reason to send it to be replaced I just wanna make sure so please help me and leave helpful comments with helpful opinions.
**** KEEP IN MIND ****
these results were with stamina mode with stamina level set to battery preferred (the heaviest stamina mode) so please take that under concideration before posting any thing, because I have seen people on youtube going up to 9 hours SOT(8:56 to be exact) and people going 8 hours and 7:45 while mine with max stamina mode barely does 6:30-7 hours SOT
my phone is at 63% after 2:30 hours SOT with 8 hours overall use. ive seen a video on youtube going from 100% to 80% after a whole day of work using SOT was 2:10 without stamina mode on so its almost twice as good as my battery.
