Strange deformation on screen - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I realized this weird defect on the screen after almost 2 years of use. It doesn't look like scratch because it has no effect on the display. It is only visible when the screen is off and looked at a certain range of angle.
Has anyone experienced something like this before? Is there any solution other than screen replacement?

Maybe the adhesive is allowing the glass to separate from the LCD?

It looks like oleophobic layer has worn off.

I guess you're right. Today I tested it with several droplets of water. Surface is definitely more hydrophobic near the edges of the screen.
Should I spend any money on restoring the coating? Actually my only concern is its appearance. There seems to be no functional difference on affected areas.

You should read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert M Pirsig...
It's a book I've read several times, and each time I think I understand it, but afterwards I always think "What was that all about then?"
But the basic question is about quality and a person's attitude to it. In the end he decides that quality is what you like. If you're satisfied with something, then it's of good quality. Another person looking at exactly the same thing might think it's rubbish.
So (end of long introduction... ) if you're ok with the screen in this condition, then there's no point in spending time, effort and money on "fixing" it.

Indeed. I meant if there are other things I should be concerned beside cosmetic.

I don't think so - after all, you said that the appearance is your only concern and that it works fine as it is.

Scratched screens; any experiences with ways to fix?

I have an old Wallaby that has a scratched screen at the right margin; a protector was never used and apparently, someone used the scrollbar a LOT, violently so.
If it was just a little scuff, I'd just apply a protector to keep it from getting scratched any more (the screen is still reasonably responsive), but this time, there's a single "bump" in the middle of the scratch that would still make the sensitivity be off.
There's quite a few products out there promising to rejuvenate scratched screens, and I was wondering if anyone has any tips or user experiences to share;
Does Displex or any other such product live up to its claims? Is it worth it to try to rub-a-dub-dub with an abrasive agent, or does it merely lead to more damage in the end?
Enquiring minds want to know!
Erm, I wouldn't recommend it
Ok
I've never used Displex on my mobile...cos I don't dare. Reason? I used it on my ipod...was so eager, I even used it on the clickwheel. Clickwheel became so cool and shiny...but lost sensitivity. (stop laughing)
So basically, if its a device which uses a touch interface, don't use Displex or any such cleaner (which although they claim are not abrasive basically are, cos they literally work down the plastic like a really weak acid). Of course, if your touch interface isn't imbeded on the actual screen itself but underneath it (hold to light, check for tiny dots...u see dots, its imbedded).

[Q] Nexus Gorilla Glass 3 question

Hi Guys,
I just have a question about the GG3. Anyone had practical experience with it on the nexus 5 screen? How's the durability & damage resistant features (i.e. day-to-day accidental bumps & knocks on the screen; (except dropping it))?
Last night, while changing i hit my kneecap directly on my nexus 5 screen & heard an audible impact sound. Any idea if the GG3 can take such a one-time direct impact by my kneecap? or will it cause any stress/strain to the glass?
Any advice/information is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
An "audible impact sound".... =P
Anyways, I guess it depends how hard to kneed your phone although I'd say if there's no visible damage you're fine. If you're constantly kneeing your phone, on the other hand, then that might be different (obviously). "Strain/stress" to me is something that's occurring consistently over a period of time, and in this case you hit it once.
While lots of people prefer their phone as is, I'd suggest investing some money in a good quality screen protector. It would be well worth it to have that fail safe in the event you do accidentally hit the screen. But to each their own!

I do use a screen protector currently & my knee did not strike it very hard, just an accidental knock. So I guess that my screen is safe & that the force of this one-time knee strike isn't sufficient to cause any damage/stress to the screen if the screen is perfect now?
I'd say if it's not visibly damaged and the sensitivity is the same as before, the screen should be fine. I'm not really sure if that would damage the phone internally though. Like getting hit in the stomach with a sack of potatoes. On the outside you might not be cut or scratched, but on the inside you'd feel like death haha. Okay, maybe that's a bad analogy. But you get the point.

Hahaha, yea. I got your point. So if it's working perfectly fine ever since, there probably isn't any damage & I should not worry that much and just use normally right?
Yup, that's what I'd do anyways. Use it normally, but maybe for the next few days pay attention to the sensitivity or the screen or any other abnormalities. A bump from your knee isn't anything to worry about in my opinion. Just avoid any flying tornado kicks to the screen.

Screen cracks easily?

Over on another (swedish) forum we're seeing some rather disturbing reports of screens cracking for seemingly no reason.
Some have reported cracks after simply placing their phone on a table, others by just having it in their pocket.
Do we have XDA member with similar experiences?
Given the number of times it has dropped from the table because it's so rediculously slippery, to no ill effect on the glass, it doesn't seem too bad. I might have been lucky, though.
Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
It doesn't crack easily, but it seems to happen yeah.
I know this was an issue with the Z2 as well (know 1 or 2 ppl suffering from it) and hope it's not a wide-spread one with the Z3. The fact that it performs as some hoovercraft thingie floating over flat services is kinda annoying though, fell a few times here as well already but luckily no damage so far.
phones have glass screens. Glass screens break on some occasions. Water is wet.
add every report you can find and what do we get? 20? lets make it 100. Of 100 000 phones sold (which is serious lowballing) that is 0.1%.
so even if it seems bad it's not really an issue
As long as iitgets repaired by Sony you mean....
of course, like on the z2.
i think a lot of people are just careless.. i mean who buys this type of phone and already in less than 2 days of owning it, they managed to cracked the screen by dropping it or sitting on it while in their pocket. sh*t happens but if people were more careful i doubt we'd be seeing all these 'broken screen' threads.
IMO the z2 was one of the most sturdy glass screen phones ever, this z2 drop test is pretty amazing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BGQtfDZNt4
so unless something in the glass was changed between the two versions i don't see how the z3 can be any worse than the z2.
Well I accidentally tested the sturdiness of the phone when I pulled my jacket up and forgot that phone was on top of it. Well nice 1,5m fall with some momentum and not a single scratch. Phew.
Its Gorilla Glass 3, so I don't think it should be any weaker or stronger than other Gorilla Glass 3 phones out there. Any quality issues is probably Corning's fault.
Update: according to Sony they use both Gorrila glass 3 and Dragontrail glass. I have heard Dragontrail is slightly less scratch resistant but thats about it.

On the contrary, Dragontail is harder than GG3...... resists scratches more - but at the detriment to viewing angle quality which is why DT is on the back.
I didnt't notice ANY scratch resistance of the glass backplane. Just use it carefully for a few days - enjoy a nice collection of scratches to stay. Deeply disappointing.
Agreed, seems no matter how careful I am it'll just pick up tiny scratches on the back..seemingly from little specs of dust..I don't understand.

There is a table in this link, it shows GG3 as being higher on the hardness scalle by small amount over Dragontrail.

Wow, you guys are scaring me.
I think the cracked screen problem is not from dropping it, or sitting on it. It's that the screen cracks by itself even when just sitting on a table somewhere. People are blaming the temperature difference between a hot phone and a cool surface for stressing the glass and cracking it.
I dunno, I'm in no hurry to upgrade just yet, we'll see.

I posted some pics in another thread here. Hoping it's just a fault with the device

BBC Watchdog did a story on this for the Z1, now there are new complaints coming in about similar issues on the Z3.
BBC Watchdog link for Z1:
http://www.xperiablog.net/2014/05/3...peria-z1-cracking-screen-issue-sony-responds/
I chose this phone over the M8 due to the Camera, I kept insureance for the Z3 with T-Mobile just in case I get this issue when my phone arrives. Depending on how things turn out with more and more people complaining, I might just have to get the M8.
HTC gives free one time cracked/damaged screen replacement within 6 months in US as part of HTC Advantage. Sony should do the same, especially with their screen issues.
There are theories about uneven expansion of surfaces under heat stress causing cracks due to the way the glass is glued.
I have not experienced the cracking issue but I did notice a scratch on the glass on the back of the phone not even a week after getting it. It's not too bad, and not even really visible in direct light, but you bet I slapped a case on that thing as fast as I could.

I'm sure its a minority getting this issue but still seems to be a lot more than other manufacturers which is alarming. I made my dad get the HTC M8 over the iPhone 6 just for HTCs' Advantage program of one time free screen replacement.
I'm so glad I bought the white version because I can barely see the scratches on the back! It used to drive me crazy on my old black Z1 :silly:

Screen bleed

Does anyone have screen bleed issues? I'm having a tough time identifying if there are any. Can someone post pictures for reference?

No I don't have any screen bleeding issue.
But if you aren't sure use an all blck wallpaper and if you see whitish tone near the edges your screen is bleeding.

Perhaps a white wallpaper would show any particular screen bleeding than black wallpaper.
I dont need to post pictures, there is rather noticeable bleeding all around the display when using dark wallpaper when brightness is set to more rhan 50% (indoor usage). Especially on top and bottom edge of the display.

I am facing an issue that is I am getting a vertical line in the above center of the screen which is only seen when i turn off the screen. It isn't a scratch but it feels like the display is burned or something. I don't know why it is happening. I have cleaned the device but that is not getting rid of it. I am thinking to go to service centre to get a replacement or something. Btw i play pubg alot, maybe it is the reason. But this should not a good sign of every RN7Pro customer !

That's new to me and is quite strange to see. Doesn't look like screen bleed or burn though. Do get it checked at the service centre, and, if possible, enquire from them as to what caused it and keep us updated. Also, playing pubg shouldn't have such drastic effects on a device.

Yeah it's really strange!
I don't know if i will get replacement or what coz i bought this 20 days ago.
Let's see what happen.
I've had a similar issue on my old phone. Either you have been cleaning your screen too much (so much that you have "cleaned" away a part of the oleophobic coating) or you have been playing games too much (sliding your finger along the same part of the screen and your sweat dissolved the oleophobic coating little by little). Try placing a couple of water drops on that part of the screen and also on different part of the screen (where there is no "smudge" ). You'll see a difference in the water drop shape. As far as i know, there is no way to restore factory applied oleophobic coating to its original condition.

I quite agree with you 2nd point of playing game that is pubg as I already mentioned and as you said "sliding your fingers along same part of the screen" Yes, this could be the reason as the joystick is on the left and it's always sliding there and as the device gets heated I get sweat on my thumb. But I have been playing pubg on my recent Note 5 Pro, I never got any sort of smudge. By the way it's not a cheap phone as it has best specs. But I did not expect this issue and yes I have cleaned with water but it's now permanent. I am little worried about the phone as I will go to the service center today to get replacement or whatever they will say. I will let you all know what will be the result.
Unfortunately, no oleophobic coating is perfect as it will wear off every device/surface over time. It depends on how one uses his/hers phone. I can only speculate that since RN5P and RN7P have different screen materials, the oleophobic coating will perform differently on each device. There are also other factors at play. I hope the service centre will give you a replacement unit, but this case scenario falls under "normal wear and tear" category which is, to my knowledge, not considered as a device defect. Anyway, there are some products out there that claim to restore/reapply the oleophobic coating of a screen, but i really doubt their efficacy. I guess you have nothing to loose if you wish to try some out, but even if they work, their efficacy will not be near as good as a factory applied coating. Good luck.

Unfortunately, service center only said that this is the first time that this problem we have faced and said you can only get the new lcd panel inspite of replacing the device.
So now I have to replace the lcd panel and have to wait for 7-10 days with submitting my phone to the service center! Without submitting the device they will not replace the lcd which is sad.

Playing PUBG a lot doesn't cause screen bleeding, lol. You might have physically damaged the phone consciously or not knowingly.

I respect you answer!
But do you know that I have been using this device since 25 days, thereafter, my device had not felt even once.
Secondly, I use this device with cover that is provided in the mi store worth 349 which is very safe and good cover.
Fortunately, the device was all good when I opened the box and there was no spot, but I have noticed that spot after 15 to 20 days.
I thought that is is nothing just a smudge which can be cleared with a cloth but it doesn't get rid of it.
If I damaged the Device physically then a scratch must be there on the screen where there is a spot, so there is not even a single scratch. By the way if I have damaged it myself then I have to mention that thing in the thread, as I mentioned playing PUBG, because I had a doubt that when I play PUBG daily 3-4 hours the device is heated a lot above the center portion and the place where the spot is as same as the joystick of pubg which is used continuously ! Lastly I had no screen guard on the screen !

General General Feedback

I thought I would open this thread up to discussions on general feedback, positive and negative about people's hands on experience with the flip4.
This is my first ever foldable and so far I am enjoying it, the cameras are quite decent unless you are somewhat of an enthusiast, battery life is good compared to my old S10+ and heating only seems to be an issue if I am say downloading a large file with the phone folded. It handles heavy gaming quite well, the snapdragon 8+ gen 1 does a fantastic job.
I didn't think I would like the side mounted finger print sensor but I've found that not being underdisplay makes it much more responsive, it gets my finger first time even by accident sometimes!
I find my self less distracted aswell, I can simply view and read notifications from the small screen and don't find myself mindlessly scrolling through apps as much because the phone is folded.
A few negatives, it feels more narrow and long than my s10+ which took a bit to get used to. Also the screen seems to be a dust magnet, I'm finding myself having to wipe the screen several times a day, I guess it's the type of material the supplied screen protector is made of.
The crease can be very distracting and annoying when watching videos, I find myself having to hold it at certain angles sometimes just so I can't see the crease and glare from it.
Would be interested to hear other peoples thoughts and experiences.
I've had my Flip for about 3 weeks now, and while on the whole I've been happy, I just noticed today that one of the bumpers on my bezel has fallen off. I feel like a $1k phone shouldn't have an issue like that after less than a month.

Yeah I feel like that is a defect and something samsung should fix for free! Especially for such an expensive phone. My bumpers look attached quite well and show no signs of coming off. Did you ask samsung about it?

I talked with Samsung Support and they are fixing it via Asurion.
I know no one here is waiting with baited breath, but I had to send my device in to Samsung to get the bezel fixed, and after a week, it was sent back, and NOTHING was fixed. Ugh.
I see you're a cyclist. What is your experience with the Z Flip while cycling? I tried it out in the store because I was hoping for a compact phone to take pictures during my bicycle rides. But I found that taking pictures with the cover screen camera felt very clumsy.
