How to Root without TWRP - Mate 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Every guide I read about installing TWRP it tells me I have to format data or I will receive error about not being able to access internal data.
Is it possible to root the device without installing TWRP?
I don't want to format my phone, I have spent many many hours setting the device up. I just want to have root on it. Not experiment with different roms.
Please?

Forgot to mention. My bootloader is already unlocked. I had TWRP before but decided to completely restore my phone to update to latest C432B170 build so now it's completely stock again except for the unlocked bootloader.
Is there anyway to root mate 8 without losing/formatting data?

Can you provide me the C432 rom that you used for going back to stock please?

its available for download in the huawei ota server link thread

Ah o.k. thanks. I own a NTX-AL10 Cinese version and I can't get it then. I like to go to European rom. For the moment I already made it International though ( More or less) ?. I still could use the proper image files. In fact the recovery of your phone would do?

I believe, if you make a backup (with provided program) to your sdcard you can restore all settings and homescreen icons. I made the backup already but as long it's not necessary I don't try to recover from it ?

Anyone?
I want to root but I don't want to lose the settings/apps on my phone. Please help

hello. i have unlocked lg d800 undroid 4.4.2 not rooted and whont update knock code and when i trie to update it cpmes messige "youer phone not registered yet" whot can i do? please help. thanks ))
most probably you'll have to root your phone.
Kernel with the knock code update is available here (last one) https://www.lg.com/global/support/opensource/opensourceList?types=NAME&search=d800
So according to my knowledge you can get the knock code update simply by flashing the D800-20u kernel on top of the KITKAT(original) rom.
i can't get it without root?? i never root this phone
Well it seems that you need to root to flash which is really easy. Rooting is not rocket science

No data will be lost. So that suggests you it is a simple process and you always can unroot the device.
****For your information Even if you do a factory reset only the settings will be gone. Non of you photos or files will be lost.

Well i think i found to flash the update without rooting. Download the kernel (last one in https://www.lg.com/global/support/opensource/opensourceList?types=NAME&search=d800 and extract it. If it contains a kdz file then tell me. Im at work btw)

Should we stay on stock for right now?

What should we do? For myself at this moment, I do not need root or custom roms. I have read many people recommending staying on stock for OTAs updates right now. The only reason I want TWPR is for the nandroid backups of the stock rom. Is it even possible to update stock, the OTA updates and reapply the unlock bootloader and TWPR afterwards? I know TWPR is still being working on at this moment. Also, is there even a stock rom [for FRD-AL04???] without root available through TWPR right now?
I believe I have FRD-AL04 which is the US/32 gig phone, right? Is this the correct model? Here is the link to amazon page.
Mine is the US 32gb black Honor 8 and model number is FRD-L04
Edit: Check your model number in the Settings > About Phone screen.
---------- Post added at 04:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:22 PM ----------
On whether to stay stock or not... it's up to you. I unlocked my phone, which wipes it, then installed TWRP and SuperSU for root. Kept the ROM stock. But then I realized I forgot to do OTA updates first. Doing a quick update failed because TWRP didn't know what to do. I then selected a "Full Update" in the menu of the Updater. This actually completely wiped out my unlocked bootloader, recovery and root in one swoop. So now I am back to stock it seems so I'll have to unlock and start over if I want to redo it. But I'm not sure I am going to. I started using Helium made by the team that made ClockworkMod. It isnt able to back up ALL app data, but it does get a nice chunk of it which I think will be good enough for me for now.
Stay on stock until company stops pushing out OTA updates. I do this on all my phones.

Few questions if you don't mind.
1. Are you saying that even with unlocked bootloader and custom recovery you're still able to accept the OTA?
2. How would you restore the apps&data after accepting the OTA and going throu the unlocking/rooting process over again? Does Helium handle this w/o problems?
Thanks.
well, your question is complicated... but it has many type of sollutions
1.if its the nandroid backup is the only thing you want, then try backing up via honorsuit app,,
2.you can unlock the bootloader( dont worry you still be getting updates after this)
install twrp
make a backup
and find if someone did a backup with stock recovery
grab it
restore..
now you have your backup and youl be elligable for ota
3. if theres no one done a backup of stock recovery, dont worry... you can do it
unlock bootloader
now type fastboot devices
fastboot boot recovery twrp.img
this will temperorily boot twrp and you can have your backup
and BTW, you better be on stock, because, there is no stable custom rom yet and you are nearly getting a nougat update..:good:

1. Yes, but only if you select the FULL download update in the menu of the updater (which says it's around 1.6GB). This will wipe out your unlock, TWRP and root though. At least it did for me.
2. I don't know, I didn't re-unlock it because it was going to wipe my phone again. I decided to stay stock for now using Helium backup to backup my apps, SMS, etc.

I also had this problem at first. I ended up having to switch from using their chrome add-on to installing the client for my OS (OS X in my case). So if you're using the chrome add-on try installing one of the clients instead.

Ok thanks, but I am already using the OSX app myself. Managed to get it to work just now, had to reboot and now can't get it to work again. Some say to select 'midi' instead of ptp to get it to work, but that doesn't work for me either. Seems its a timing thing and I have't worked it out yet.
Not having a cross platform backup mechanism certainly doesn't help people stay stock without root imho.

Proper current method for root/TWRP (and maybe xposed) for Boost Mobile j700p?

Hi all,
Apologies for such a simple question, but there are a bunch of different threads over the last few months that have slightly differing techniques for rooting and adding TWRP to the J7, but there seem to be a ton of different versions compared to the J3 and I need to make sure I'm following the right directions for a Boost Mobile j700p. I don't want to waste time and risk softbricking this brand new device, so does anyone know or can link me to the most up-to-date reliable method? I just upgraded from a j3 and it seems like the method is very similar if not identical (odin twrp on, flash chainfire supersu, flash xposed) but I just to make sure I am following the right directions and using the right files. This is for a brand new Boost Mobile j700p.
I have attached a screenshot of my phone info, in case firmware version or baseband etc info is relevant.
Thanks in advance for all your help!

This is the way i was able to root my version of the J700P. MY phone is the same as the screen shot provided. The only issue that i had was once i flashed TWRP and did a backup, the phone would constantly boot into TWRP Recovery. So i had to reflash stock rom and root again oh and i unchecked OEM unlock to off, didnt realize i needed to leave it on so i wouldnt get the FRP Lock lol. Still waiting on someone to let me know how i can install TWRP Recovery and it work and not soft brick.

i have twrp, the most current version on the sm j700p. All you gotta do is use odin to install it. Just make sure u use the most recent odin and twrp file for j700p. Then when u place it in AP with odin make sure auto reboot option is turned off so it fully installs it. If u have auto reboot on it will not complete the process.
Ok I will give that a try, tyvm. I cant uncheck auto reboot. Here is a screenshot.

Ok sooo now i did a backup and now again, it just keeps rebooting back up into twrp. I have no idea whats going on with this. Gonna have to reflash stock rom again and then root again. This is frustrating to say the least.... Keeps saying Recovery is not seandroid enforcing, set warranty bit : recovery...... Thats whats it saying at the top...

Glad to hear that.
I just put up the link this morning and I'll check it up after work.
If anyone was also wondering if Xposed works, I can only say that it does install, it does boot, but the phone 'settings' force closes (no message, just returns to previous window).
Steps taken:
Installed Xposed installer 3.1.1
Installed version 87 (not from recovery)
Rebooted
Reboot takes a long time, but eventually boots. Seems to work fine until I went to the phone settings and it wouldn't open.
Opened the Xposed installer again
Uninstalled (not from recovery)
Maybe results will vary with an older xposed or doing it properly from recovery, not risking it at the moment.

I've updated the link, thanks for pointing out the error.
Just tried flashing Xposed 86 (tried 87 before) through the recovery, also disabled resource hooks in the xposed installer app.
Now everything seems to work.
For anyone that is interested .
Thank you. This worked for me.
What I did:
- unlock bootloader
- access phone bootloader with phone connected to computer
- click app's "...recovery" button and select TWRP recovery file provided with app (the installation is almost instantaneous)
- boot phone into recovery (TWRP will be in Chinese but English is available)
- root phone from TWRP advanced menu (clicking the "root" button will install supersu)
Where was this, when the 5x started development? I already flashed, and rooted my 5x, but would this tool work on that? If so, I can archive it for later use, if needed, or change it, so it could work with the 5x, since they both(at this time) have EMUI 4.1. Is it possible?

I heard that EMUI has a problem with xposed, it's at the start of the honor 5x forums, in development.
Is it easy to unlock bootloader?
I have not yet gotten a 6x, but will soon. Trying to plan custom rom and etc in advance. Its really great that the device has such activity!
In G7, bootloader unlock requires getting a code from Huawei website and took some time before the phone model was on the website. It also did a factory reset after applying the code for which it gave no warning for.
I imagine its similar bit Honor, seeing as Huawei is their parent.

For 5X, there is only TWRP, not with the 1-click root function.
Anyone done this on a BLN-L24 yet?
I was gonna wait a while to mess with this thing but I just switched carriers and I need to try and get around the hotspot provisioning check.

Also, if anyone is having trouble getting viper4android working (I was), there is a flashable zip in this thread that works. :good:

Bricked Honor 8 FRD L19

Hello guys, I'm so sorry for having to bug you all eventhough there already has been many threats regarding a bricked Honor 8.
But however, i'm really stuck because apparently my Honor 8 model is FRD-L19C636 B380 currently running emui 5.0
This phone was bought in Malaysia. Due to my retardness, i tried rooting this phone but accidently wiped the entire system with my backup of twrp.
This phone is unlocked, its having stock recovery now, phone works as in, there are many apps missing and theres no keyboard and camera does not work.
I seem to have downloaded the update.app for the latest version but it does not include CUST.IMG which then doesnt allow me to fully flash the rom.
When I'm thinking about downgrading, it didnt work either because i cannot find the correct version for the downgrade. (I randomly picked a FRD L19 emui 4.1 from the website and flash it, it failed at CUST.IMG and further bricked my device but now its back to the state where theres no keyboard and apps are missing)
Bootloader is unlocked
I can access fastboot and stock recovery. Please I really need help D: I would never want to mess with my phone ever again, my mom bought me this phone and it was hard for her, I feel really bad for not taking care of it properly.
