Is there a specific reason why this watch don't get updates anymore? - Samsung Gear 2

Hi
I really like the Samsung Gear S2, but if they drop updates like this, when the watch is 2 years old? I rather get a Android Wear, as at least they keep updating it for more than two years. I can see the last update for this watch is 24-04-22, which is a year after it's released, all development from Samsung has stopped. Is this normal Samsung procedure or is there a special reason that they stopped on this device (like they sold too little)?
So do you think that I can get updates in the future from Samsung if I buy a new one or should I just buy an Android Wear?
Thanks in advance

Typical of Samsung. They put out new tech so often, they drop support quickly. Samsung is known for this, unfortunately.

I agree. Specifically one that would allow it to work with the new Gear Manager for iphone.

It as been stated that the Samsung Gear 2 will also be made compatible with other manufacturers Android devices.

The article also says Samsung will release an Android based smartwatch later this year... I'm not even going to attempt to understand that one. The only way I can see them doing that is if they run with Android Wear just to have a device in that space (you know, the Android faithful crowd).
Yeah, the Android Wear bit did confuse me as well. Kinda glad I'm not the only one that gets confused about these things. Lol.

i'd get a Gear 2 (or Neo) if i knew if would certainly work with my phone, but "eventually" could be a month or a year from now

True. Surely Samsung should know how detrimental it is to their overall Smart phone strategy. Hopefully sooner than later

How really? They anyways control more than 50% of Android smartphone market share. I am yet to find a reason why that would hurt them. How can locking customers in their own eco system be detrimental to their profits?
Well yes they have the smartphone market, but with this restriction they will not own the wearable market using Tizen. Wearable is the new fighting ground for devices and revenue.

Not sure if Google Nexus watch will support more then just Google phones (I assume it will be all Android) but it is to be announced in July at Google I/O. It looks a lot nicer then the Gear 2. At that point I have a feeling that the Gear 2 will get phased out if they don't open up to Android by then. Mainly because Google is a super power and they will find a way to push them out of the way. The next 2 months are vital to the GG2's existence outside of the Samsung ecosystem.
Here's a list of the latest Samsung devices compatible with the Gear 2:

What do you mean by opening up to Android? This is built on Tizen, everyone knows that already.
Guess you haven't checked Samsung's financial results lately. Samsung Electronics made 7.7 billion profit last Q. That's just the electronics division. They have countless other companies controlled by same family/chaebol.
For the life of me, I don't understand why everyone is so up in arms about the gear series only working with Samsung devices. If and when the iWatch is released everyone will praise them like sheep and no one will complain that it won't work with my note 3. Samsung sells MILLIONS more phones than apple yearly. So why does everyone have an issue with it? Also, since I'm ranting again, leave Android wear for Android. Meaning I don't want Android wear on my Gear 2 neo. Android wear is nothing more than a wearable notification system. Android wear on this device would be like buying a Ferrari and swappjng the motor for an LS7 for no other reason than you like corvettes. Android wear would cripple this awesomely capable device. OK its late.... I'm done. Don't mind me. ... I'm sleepy

Nice rant. I'm with you brother. I'm a big samsung guy and love my gear. We don't know what Apple will bring to the table because they keep putting watches and phones "iPhone 6" off for release. They're so far behind the curve is ridiculous. Now. That being said the one thing you said could be wrong. The initial rumors are apple's Iwatch will run on all devices. That's what the rumors say. It would be in their best interest to do that and try and steal away Android and windows phone customers. We'll see. Maybe the iwatch will be released before the gear 3.. lol

If Apple actually allows their watch to be used with android devices.... It will signal the death of Apple. The last time they said something would work with all devices they meant 3gs and newer. Lol. But really, if it does, Steve Jobs will rise from the dead and smack Jony Ive so damn hard that his face will swell into the Google.com logo of the day.

Gear 2 works fine with my HTC One M8, just need to find the APK for the Gear Manager. Obviously certain samsung specific features like the Weather, S-Health, S-Voice wont work but other features including notifications work fine.

I followed the instructions to a T, even started from a fresh CloudyFlex 2.1 ROM install - Media Controller appears on my Gear 2 and I'm able to adjust the volume from it and see the currently playing track, but it won't let me pause/play or skip tracks. I'm using Play Music.

I'm using Sense 6 Music Play application on HTC One M8 and all the controls work (play/pause, skip tracks forward/backward and volume up/down). Could be a Google issue.
Wife's Gear 2 came in the mail, so I decided to try it myself. I was able to do take photo's and sync them to my phone and make phone calls. I didn't try the notifications or replying to them.
I'd definitely want one, but not to sure about it. If it had the Nike+ running app on it, then I'd definitely get it.

Gear 2 Tizen to Android

So a quick question here. Since we have a firmware dump for the Gear 2 would we not have the ability to port the original Gear firmware to the Gear 2? We should be able to verify the structure of the device correct? I do believe both devices have really close specs other than the CPU upgrade and I believe the Btooth is different between the 2 devices. Thanks.

Would be even more interesting to see if we could get it to run Android Wear! I'd be willing to put a cash bounty on that! (If the battery could hold up to it.)
Im sure it will be achieved in due time..

10 bucks from me.
Tizen is useless. For me anyway as someone who wants to install apps and have it communicate with other Android devices.

In the spirit of digging up an old thread. ... Android Wear on my Gear 2 would be awesome if it would run well.
+$50 for fully functional Android Wear with a respectable battery (At least one day...)
Lets see if we can get someone who knows how to do this intrested!
Seeing samsung announce a Gear with Wear so soon is a bit disheartening for me. I got the first Gear, returned it because the Gear 2 was going to be announced. Im happy with the upgrades but dissapointed because I feel like development is going to die as soon as the Moto 360 and other Android Wear devices are launched later this year.

Samsung S2 Classic 4g?

I am very seriously considering getting a S2 Classic 4g for fathers day. I currently use a Note 3 but will be pre-ordering the Note 6 as soon as it is available. If you have the S2 4G, how do you like it?
Could you please provide a link to the app store? I would like to see what type of app that are now available. I like the idea of making a quick phone call straight from the watch. Is there a navigation app that works with the watch yet? Will it vibrate on your wrist when a turn or exit is coming up? Can you use samsung pay from the watch?
Thanks for any advice
I have the Verizon sport version. It is nice to know it will still work if I leave my phone at home.
I don't think you can look at the app store without a watch paired. I can look up an app if you want.
I've seen a few navigation apps but they require you watch be connected via Bluetooth, but otherwise I believe they do want you want.
There is no samsung pay yet, but it's supposed to be released in 2016.

I would just wait for the Gear S3 coming out in November.

My Note 3 hooks up to my car audio system through bluetooth. If the watch is now paired to my phone, do I now loose the capability to answer phone calls through my car?

Or the gear S4 in 2017, or the gear S5 in 2018. If you always wait for the next generation you'll always be waiting.

In this case, I think it was great advice since I remarked in the original thread that i was going to be getting a Note 6 when it becomes available. I think I will wait for the S3 since I will have the newest samsung phone available when the S3 comes out. I would think the note 6 and the S3 will work together much better than the note 3 would with the S2.

I'd think the note 6 will work fine with the Gear S2 since the S2 is the latest at the time the note 6 is released. Not only that but no one knows when or if the gear S3 will be released, what it will look like, or what specs it will have. Waiting for a release is a huge gamble, waiting for a device that may or may not be released is an even larger gamble.

is Gear s2 getting any more big updates ?

Or is it dead and samsung only cares for s3 now ??
Knowing how Samsung works and is profit-orientated there's little to no chance we will see any Tizen 3 upgrade for our Gear S2 devices...
Tizen 3 is not expected in 2017...
No idea if "surprice" in 2018... but I think no...
Meanwhile also USA with Sales Code/CSC:
XAR
Have:
Code:

The Gear S2 got another minor update today in the Netherlands. I asked Samsung support about Tizen 3.0 and they said that they didn't have any informations regarding it.
okay thanks for answers, i asume we will not get it then, ;( its a good watch only con for me is the battery life that could be better, i guess i will buy the s3 next year perhaps when the price has gone down a bit.. for now the s2 will have to do.

S-Voice no longer avaiailable?

Is S-Voice an app that is no longer available for the SM-R380 Gear 2?
Such a shame, it was much better than using quick replies.....or fleksy messenger.
I just picked up the S3 Frontier....and using S-Voice is cool once again.....besides that, I still like the Gear2 ...maybe more than the S3
S-Voice is gone [emoji22] I liked it too and my Gear 2. I want to get a square faced Gear watch but I have no idea if Samsung will bring it back.

Sorry to bother you, but my son used my old Gear 2 and he changed the phone's software. I loaded the Tizen Software but it's not Samsung software and it won't accept updates. With all that said do you know where I could a fresh ROM I think it's called so I go back to Samsung instead of Tizen. Since the watch is old there isn't any posts or current support. Any help greatly appreciated still a great watch.
