Android File Transfer (Mac) not working? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Anyone having issues with AFT and the GS7? When I plug in the GS7, AFT launches but I get an error that the device is locked, even though it isn't (screen is on and it's unlocked). I've tried removing security just to eliminate that, doesn't help.
Other Android 6.0 devices work fine with AFT so it's clearly GS7 related.
Particularly annoying because you can't yet write directly to the External SD card

When you connect S7 to the MAC, it says cannot connected, but a popup appears on your phone. Allow it, and don't disconnect the USB cabel. Once again, start Android File Transfer App. This is how it works. Each time when you plug S7 in, you have to allow the connection on the phone, after that it works until you disconnect S7.

When I plug mine in and change the setting to media transfer on the phone AFT pops up and says "try reconnecting or restarting your device" then closes. Every time

Please don't assume we're rookies. It does not work. Even after clicking "allow" for permissions, it fails every time.
Also don't assume every variant is the same.

For anyone who seems to be hitting a dead end, this completely solved my problem...

Issue related to having previously installed Kies (prob from SGS4 days).

You mean after allowing and not pulling USB cable out? After allowing just open Android File Transfer app again. DO NOT REMOVE the cable!

Your solution didn't work for me, I still have to allow access for the computer each time I connect the S7. After allowing it works flawlessly.

Yes, that's true. I couldn't get it to connect no matter what, without uninstalling Kies. That was my OP.

OK, I found a real solution: install Samsung Smart Switch and update it. When phone is connected (don't have to allow) there is a small arrow on the right side of the name of your device, expand it, and a small folder icon opens a file manager like AFT. By the way it has also a backup/restore/update/syncMAC function without root.

If you have been getting a response when plugging in a Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 edge, do the following:
Go the the Kies website and download Kies for Mac.
Next, openKiesMacSetup.dmg which you've just downloaded.
Click Uninstall. Your Mac will ask you to open the app, so you'll need to open it.
Once it's done uninstalling Kies you probably had on your computer from a while back and no longer use, once you plug in your new GS7 or GS7 edge, and open the AFT application on your Mac, it should still give you a weird response, but on your phone, this time it'll ask you if you're ready to connect your phone and open it up to see files on your computer. Select that you do, and it'll work.
A Finder window opens, and the model number will appear in the center of the Finder window with the requisite files.

Actually, unless I missed it, nobody touched on the solution, which is incredibly simple. I found it on accident. The default setting for the GS7 is to CHARGE when plugged into a Mac (maybe PC too?). Swipe the top notification area, tap "charging" and switch it to file transfer, or photo, or whatever else you want. Good luck!!!

Fixed it for me just now
I was having all of the above issues. What worked for me was completely removing all traces of Android File Transfer (including other mobile sync applications) with AppDelete. Then I reinstalled Android file transfer, plugged my phone in, tapped "Allow", and it worked!

I struggled with this, as well. I even uninstalled all KIES drivers form my Mac and AFT still didn't work with my S7 until I did the following:
(1) Plug the S7 USB into the Mac.
(2) Down swipe the status bar at the top and you should see a "USB Charging" status.
(3) Tap on the "USB Charging" status and a menu with radio buttons should pop up.
(4) Choose the "File Transfer" option.
After doing that, AFT worked properly and it didn't even require me to click "Allow" or anything else. It just worked.

mickliq's solution worked for me as well (hadn't been able to connect an s7 or s6 to a mac air osx 10.11.4 until downloading and uninstalling Kies). Thanks!

[Q] Screen On with "USB Device Disconnected"

My Galaxy Tab 7.7 turns on every few minutes and displays a message for a moment in the lower right corner. The message is "USB Device Disconnected".
The device is not connected to any USB device.
This has been happening for many weeks now.
I've tried to turn the USB Debug option on but that didn't change anything.
I have not rooted the device.
I have not flashed the device.
I am running only stock applications from the market.
Does anyone else have this issue?
It's maddening because the device constantly turns itself on. At night I either remove it from my bedroom (the display lights up the room when it comes on) or turn the device upside down on the table so I can't see it when it comes on.
yes, i have the same issue
no idea what the reason is
Same issue.
One Added Note
One item to add...
It appears that if the unit is charging it does not have this problem. This makes logical sense as the USB is connected, albeit to the wall outlet.
I'm going to wait until ICS - which is due here in Thailand at the end of this month. If that doesn't fix it I will contact Samsung.
Living here in Asia makes taking things back for repair very difficult as the many small but authorized vendors aren't set up for this, the language barrier adds heavily to the issue, and finding an English speaking official Samsung office is quite difficult.
I will monitor the forum to see if a fix arrives before my software update.
Thanks everyone!
Same problem here. When this happen for me the mobile network disconnects, I am thinking that it may be some problem with the mobile network card...
When connected to wifi this is not visible although i might get the usb message.
But on 3g i loose all connection sometimes only for a second but sometimes for up to a couple of minutes...
Sent from my XT910 using Tapatalk
Update
I wanted to add some more information...
I happened to remove my carrier's SIM a week ago and the "USB device disconnect" error continues at the same rate.
I guess my next question is how do you contact Samsung support?
Do they have a Tablet support phone number?
I don't care which country the support line is located within, as long as it's English-speaker focused.
bump
very annoying to lose mobile network all the time
I changed Galaxy Tab 7.7 (3G Version) three times, all three tablets had same problem.... any idea to fix it?
I think the problem gets worse if the tablets not been rebooted for a while.
But after reboot I think mine is a bit more stable.
How is it for the rest of you?
---------- Post added at 10:50 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:49 PM ----------
I also find it weird that you have the same problem with three tablets, but at the same time it seems that very few of us are affected???
I called Samsung and they said they never have complaints on this issue.... anyway, i got three devices from different stores have the same problem.. I think the issue is the rom. That problem hopefully can be solved after ICS upgrade...
Same problem; not so often but it happens once in a while.
I don't know if it is causing the instability that I have noticed with this device but it is kinda weird.
Do you have micro SD card plugged into the device? I read some other forums and some people removed the micro SD card, the issue resolved afterward.
I just removed the micro SD card, I will let you guys know if the issue can be fixed or not soon...

Solved
I think all this happens because of Kies software. It's a monster, I will never use it any more. Even uninstlling may not help. Better use MobilEdit instead.
Anyway, I found solution in registry. So, try this:
Before starting, disconnect all usb devices from PC
1. Open Windows registry editor
2. Open key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Enum\USB
3. Press CTRL+F and search in data value your device name (egz. Samsung)
4. Delete all key branches with name started: Vid_*** where your device will be found (You may have to enable permissions first).
Reconnect device. That's all
i have the same 'problem' but..., never used Kies software
Anyway, solution is in the registry. Evidently some usb drivers are conflicting.
Deleting those Vid_*** keys simply resets usb drivers on particular port.
You can check your phone on another computer without driver

I don't see how this has anything to do with the problem.
The USB device issue is happening on the tablet, not on the PC. How does removing USB drivers from my PC fix the tablet issue?

Sorry, I didn't notice, that device is disconnected
Same problem with GSM version. Could someone try log at the logs when/after it have happend? Dmesg and logcat. Will also try to do it myself.
same issue here. Never used kies before. I'm not sure if it has something to do with interfering gadgets near the tab.
Strange thing some (or most) people dont notice that bug(?). I tried several 7.7's now and can confirm that this looks like rom issue as every 7.7 has that problem. It really annoys me, escpecially combined with the battery status screen-on bug. When battery is lower than 10% screen turns on like every 2 minutes or so... Good thing to save remaining battery
Oh and I never used Kies too. Didn't even install it yet.

[Q] "Allow USB Debugging?" Keeps Popping Up!

After upgrading to 4.3 on my i535 GS3, I'm now faced with a very annoying new problem. I use easytether pro to tether to my macbook, and now when I plug in the usb it pops up with "Allow USB Debugging?" followed by my computer's RSA key fingerprint, and then a checkbox for "Always allow from this computer".
It doesn't matter if I check the "always allow" because the next time I plug it in, it pops up with the same message again. For some reason it's not recognizing my computer, even though the RSA key fingerprint is exactly the same every time. Even worse, I have to go through this process twice every single time I plug in my usb - once for the usb connected as an installer, and twice when it switches from installer to media device.
I use tethering quite a bit, so this is kind of grinding my gears! Does anybody know what might be going on here? Is it possibly just a mac thing? Perhaps something wrong with my settings?
Try this, In developer options ->root access - allow apps and adb also USB debugging notify is unchecked.

I don't seem to have any "root access" options in my developer options. Is it hidden or something?
Sorry I must be half sleeping and thinking about custom ROM. You don't have that option, anyway do you still have the messag after untick the notify option?

You mean leave the "Always allow from this computer" unticked? I've tried both ways...it always comes back. It wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't for the face that the connection is blocked until I hit the ok button, twice around.
Still having the issue. It's starting to grind my gears...
I nobody else having this issue?

I just started having this issue and am investigating it. If I had to guess, I'd say the rsa key store is corrupt, but I'm just guessing. It was working fine this morning, and this afternoon it started yelling at me repeatedly.
I'm going to grab a logcat then will post back if/how I fixed it.
EDIT: turns out my issue was a bad USB cable. well, a bad USB cable connection. unplugged and reseated the cable and it seems to be working now.
I am also having this issue with two devices out of three I tried.
Samsung Note 10.1 (SM-P600) running Android 4.3 and ASUS K011 (ME181CX) running Android 4.4.2 always asks for permission. I tried everything including using different cables, different usb slots, different adb.exe. Even tried rooting K011, but no luck.
However, I am not having this issue with Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc (LT15i) running 4.0.4.
Edit: I came here from Google and now noticed that this is Galaxy S III section, but I think the reason to this issue and the solution will be the same. I will post the solution to here if I can do it.
---------- Post added at 03:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:21 PM ----------
Yeah, solved it. I first killed adb.exe then simply deleted the folder C:\Users\Username\.android. After that I plugged my device in and typed "adb devices". This changed the RSA key etc. It asked for the permission again and "Always allow" option worked this time.
This method worked on both ASUS and Samsung. Hope this works for you too.
Note: I recommend you backup that folder before deleting it. Or just move it into another folder.
Mac computer
I'm having this issue with easy tether 1.1.12 in a mac (currently running OS X Yosemite 10.10.3) the windows keeps showing everytime I plug the device. Does anyone experience this on a mac computer?
In a windows 7 PC it works perfectly, no messages at all after clicking the "remember" box.

[Q] What exactly did HTC do to blow up Mac syncing? and is there a fix?

As the title says, I use a mac and I have been unable to use both my M7 (After 4.4 Update) and my M8 on my mac. To be specific, android file transfer never sees the phone. Occasionally when booting my phone up when connected the manager pops up with a phone could not connect message, but it has never worked. This is isolated to just HTC phones for me, I verified my setup is fine with a Note 10.1 2014 (running 4.4.2), Nexus 5 (4.4.2), and a S4 (4.2). All of those connect fine.
I know there were some threads about HTC breaking something but I haven't seen a fix yet. Is there one?
If you're rooted, try DriveDroid. Let it acquire root, skip the setup, then tap on the Settings icon on the bottom bar. Then tap USB Settings and select Manually Change Permanent USB Mount. Select Media Transfer Protocol Android Debugging. Now connect your device. You should be good to go.

I hope not. I Loathe HTC Sync. Damn thing never quits right, doesn't run particularly well, and I just don't want another service running if I don't really need it. When I'm done with finals though I will try that. I have a bad feeling your right though...
If you restart the computer with the phone still plugged in, Android File transfer will work.

[Q] Cannot connect to PC after de-bloat?

I recently went through the process of de-bloating this phone; following the helpful guides here on the AT&T G3 General forum.
However, I am finding that I cannot connect via USB to my notebook. I am going to try this on my PC @ home this pm and see if this just is not a driver issue on this end.
I restored the LG PC Suite & Suite Service to system (as well as the settings) and tried the PC suite connection app on my notebook. No dice there either...I do not even see the phone asking me how I want to connect to the laptop before I began all this de-bloat.
Is there an APK, etc. I am missing on the phone that I need to bring back to make the PC suite work again, much less connect with my notebook?
I do have developer settings / usb debugging enabled as well as (re-) installed the LG driver package. Thank you for reading / assisting in advance.

perhaps a list of the things you did would help us decipher what might be wrong. Everyone's idea of 'debloating' is different so I'm sure you've done something different then I have.

Thanks for the reply. I removed pretty much everything on the lists provided in the AT&T G3 forums and now Windows 8 refers to my device under "Printers & Devices" as a "USB Charge Only Interface". I am on my home PC now where I can verify a few days ago I could connect to the device.
To be more specific, I cannot switch the G3 into MTP mode. Does anyone know if there is a specific apk (libs, etc) to re-enable this feature?

This is the reason I usually just freeze apps in titanium backup instead of uninstalling bloat altogether. I've had this kind of issue with other devices in the past so I always err on the side of caution. Like the other member said if you can list what all you removed so we can narrow down which app is causing your issue.

This is going to be kind of obvious but have you gone into devices on your pc and removed the LG drivers? If you remove them and then plug it in it should auto detect and reinstall the drivers. If it doesn't then at least we know its not a driver issue and it is in fact something on your device. I know it'd be a huge coincidence to both the notebook and desktop to have the same problem but the drivers could have somehow been corrupted.

this rings a bell, the first time I connected my phone to the computer it did this, I had to change the setting to MTP mode. There should be a notification on the phone that says something about changing the usb mode.
Also I don't think you get this option if the drivers aren't installed properly so that's another thing you could try

For sure. Its affecting more than that too.
I tried messing with real 4k (not 2k) wallpapers in GN launcher and it really messed with the background. Half screen black and flashing the image every 10 secs...even 1080 wallpapers starting failing.
Switched back to stock launcher and sort of fixed. Reboot finally allowed me to use GN with any 2k or less wallpaper again lol.

Troubleshooting USB problems

Hello, I have a Samsung A51 through T-Mobile. Recently my phone has only been charging and won't do any data transfer or bring up the menu to select what to do with the connection. After trying many different things I found out it will connect with data transfer only when I restart the phone while it's plugged in. Once I unplug the phone and plug it back in nothing. But if I leave it plugged in and restart it again it shows up.
Any ideas? All help would be greatly appreciated. I've looked around and cannot find anything regarding my issue.
Thank you
Try a known good cable.
Make sure the phone pop up enabling the data connection is enabled. Without permission each time access will be denied... at least on my Samsung.
Access the drive directly in Device Management; hit scan for new devices.
Check Event Viewer for errors logged.
Reload the drivers on the PC.

I can do all that. But only after restarting my phone while it's plugged in. It's not a cable issue or a USB port issue. Ive tried multiple cables and ports. And also tried same cable with different phone. The port on my phone is fine. If I plug it in, restart my phone it shows up as it should. Once I disconnect the phone and plug it back in, nothing. It's very odd. I think it may be an update issue from t mobile. But figured I'd check here.
Thank you for your response
Also, the pop up to allow access only shows up when phone is plugged in and I restart it. I unplug it and plug it back in. And it will only show thats charging and there isn't a prompt or selection of what to do with usb (transfer files, images, MTP, tethering etc.

Thank you

Try this troubleshooting steps https://www.wikihow.com/Clear-the-Record-of-USB-Plug-in-Equipment and that https://www.partitionwizard.com/disk-recovery/the-last-usb-device-malfunctioned-windows-10.html from time to time my Samsung devices have some kind of issues with Windows 10.
Also you should try with adb commands pairing both and allow the access always when the prompt appears, it could be some kind of permission denied or malfunctioning that either Samsung is not asking correctly to PC or the permission from PC is not coming properly to device, this should happen due to some old logs or a filled directory in the USB hub in Windows that needs some cleaning.

Check Developer options>USB default configuration
Try clearing system cache on the phone.
Try a hard reboot on the phone.
If you unplug the phone from the PC you need to reauthorize it via the phone pop up after you reconnect it... each time.
If you always leave the PC on, reboot it.

Like I've said. There is no prompt unless I restart my phone while plugged in. This isn't my first phone. I understand how it "should" be working. And it only acts as it should when I plug it in and restart the phone. Once I unplug it and plug it back in its as if I'm using a charg only cable.
Thanks for the response

Meh then play with it... you know the drill.
Goggle it and look at other models/OS's that had the same issue as well. A lot of the same issues keep reoccurring so this tactic is helpful with newer models too.
Either it's settings, the load got screwed up or it's hardware maybe the port. Worse case... a mobo failure.
Try it in safe mode.
I probably do a factory reset* especially if it's an old load. If that fixes it but the issue returns latter, it's a setting or 3rd party app causing it.
*if it persists after a factory reset it's possible the firmware version is the problem or the firmware got corrupted during the flash. Reflash firmware.

Thank you. I'll start with safe mode and go from there. I appreciate your response.
It's frustrating. Find a usable work around for the time being if you can.
Most times the solution is staring you in the face, step back and rethink it. When did it start? What was done before it started?
Try clearing the data in the Android Setup apk (Android Setup com.google.android.setupwizard Android).
Use a 3rd party app like Package Disabler PD MDM to clear it as doing it in Settings leaves a Null* (presumably) and can't fix it sometimes. I know this particular app (PD MDM) works because I had it happen to me with a USB popup issue a while back.
Clearing Android Setup apk data completely resolved it. If you see Android Setup as a cache app it is the culprit; normally it never runs except during initial setup.
*when data is reported as zero, Nulls are apperantly not reported but still there screwing things up.
