IMEI=0 Network connection recovered [Solved] - Moto G 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. So I wanted to extend my recent fortunate experience as a token of hope for those who are otherwise lost. I purchased a 2015 Callisto Moto G prototype (osprey)on ebay, from a reseller who sold it as a developers edition; as is. My intention was to flash it and use a third party ROM, so I said what the heck. Long story short, when I examined the phone when I received it, it was showing IMEI=0 IMEI SV=00. No network connection.
I've done some research, and tried many things. It would appear at some point someone ran fastboot eraseall and the partition holding my EFS folder was deleted. Never to be recovered again. I called Motorola and they suggested I purchase a new phone. I have tried many software solutions, most appear to be for older Android models with different chipsets, but at long last, I discovered a method that has allowed my SIM card to connect to the network once again.
So without further ado, I'll break down the process, I completed.
The device is a developers edition, so it did not require the bootloader to be unlocked; bootloader showed already in engineering mode.
1. I flashed TWRP found in the forums appropriate for my model
2. I flashed the Ressurection Remix ROM (Marshmallow) for my model
3.I enabled developer options by tapping the About phone>Build number seven times in a row
4.In developer options, I selected root access for Apps and ADB
5. I installed busybox
6. I installed the exposed framework (required by Device ID Changer). I flashed it from recovery.
7.I installed the Device ID Changer app (pro version) from the Play Store.
In the exposed installer app that appears when the exposed framework is installed, you will need to go to modules and enable Device ID Changer
8. I then ran Device ID Changer. I believe you will need to purchase the app to have the ability to do this correctly. The app allows you to enter an IMEI (along with other information) that will spoof your apps into believing you are using another phone. This is mostly useful for development purposes. However, in this case, also useful if your EFS folder was eradicated.
9. I used the IMEI from the temporary phone which I was using while I repaired the Moto G 2015. It will not be in use simultaneously and should not present a problem. I have seen YT video where any 15 digit number is assigned. I have not completed sufficient research to know what sort of network reliability this will offer. Enter the IMEI into the appropriate field in the app and then press apply. The default for the app is to spoof all apps when apply is selected, but can be changed in the app tab to spoof individual apps. I spoofed all, which included the phone apps.
10. I rebooted (the process will require a reboot after several installation steps; patience Grasshopper) and tried my SIM, but no luck, so I rebooted into bootloader and I reflashed the radio. In my case, I used OSPREY_RETUS_6.0_MPI24.65-25.1_cid9_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC.info, Windows 10, and included the ADB, Fastboot, and dll files from the minimal adb and fastboot application in the folder with the ROM I was using to flash the radio.
11. From the Admin command line, I navigated to the folder where all my information was, in this case it was cd C:\osprey. I then ran the following commands:
fastboot devices [so that I could be sure the device was recognized]
fastboot oem fb_mode_set
fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot flash fsg fsg.mbn
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem fb_mode_clear
fastboot reboot
12. When I rebooted, I had signal again!
It is important to recognize that this did not restore my EFS folder or the partition that was deleted. It appears to be a software solution to a hardware problem; so if it gets wiped, I will probably have to repeat the process. My attached screen shot still shows my phones IMEI as 0, although the IMEI sv has changed to 07. The SIM info screen clearly shows that I have made a network connection with LTE and that my radio is on. I can assure you the mobile signal is working fabulously. I hope this helps some of you brave soldiers who are still unwilling to give up on what seemed like a lost cause. It's certainly made my day.

This is great! A useful solution to a complex problem, well done and thanks for sharing!

hi bro, i really thank your effort on this theme, i followed your instructions one by one and i have no results, it shows the carrier but it is on emergency calls only and have no signal, did you use a stock rom? because your screenshots seems to be on a stock rom

I have an unlocked bootloader with Resurrection Remix ROM flashed for Osprey.

Remember not to factory reset the device or wipe data as this will undo the IMEI spoof that allows network connectivity.

ok bro im trying now without factory reset, for the resurrection remix installation, i was on "osprey_retus-user 5.1.1 LPI23.72-65 71 release-keysM8916_2020617.29.03.21.45R" before installing
edit: not worked bro, this mus be done without sim card or something?

Honestly do not remember if the SIM was in at the time or not.

wich rom was installed in your device before you install the RR MM ?
:fingers-crossed:

It was originally flashed with a barebones development kernel, I flashed the retus ROM listed above, and when I still didn't have signal, I flashed RR.

ok, so if i try to install RR without doing factory rest it says error 7, but this not hapen if i do the factory reset

Try install RR, reset, intall busybox and exposed framework, run device ID changer, reboot into bootloader, flash only radio as listed, restart without reset.

Update, just Factory reset the ROM because of SD as internal storage issues, and I can still connect to network.

Upon further reflection, it would appear the key is flashing the appropriate radio for your region/network.

try this guys

If your bootloader is still locked, have u tried flashing the fastboot image? There are instructions provided in some of the thread in the P2 section so u can try that. Note though that this is for the global version of P2... So the P2 that is linked to the service provider like Three in the UK might not be compatible (Volte might not work for example)

I have exactly the same problem with the 2G/3G on slot 1.
Could you write here in a little more detail the steps you followed in order to solve the problem?
For example, what stock rom, downloaded from where, what procedure through adb etc.
Thanks in advance
For me. Sim1 lost 2G but 3/4G is ok.

I will tell you the solution
i am in marshmallow and i download the stock Rom with a web site
http://www.mediafire.com/file/no35yqbt5ssj5b2/Lenovo_P2a42_S233_20170404.zip
1. Download the Rom file to PC And Extract it
2. install your USB driver to PC (it automatically install your when your device connected)
3.enable USB debugging under developer option or USB settings
4.When USB debugging is on your phone will come a popup and allow the prompt
5.switch off your device and press volume- and Power Button and it will enter to fast boot mode
6. open the extracted folder in your PC and there is firmware folder open and there is a file flashall click and run the file
7. it will automatically run all the command
8. after completing your device restart automatically and update was complete
After that my Problem is Solved
Thank you for the detailed steps.
I'm not in Marshmallow though but in Nougat S233.
I hope that re-flashing the stock S233.zip to the already present S233 with this method will work

This all for locked bootloader.....I too face this issue and my bootloader is unlocked.
As soon as I hit erase modemst1,st2 on unlocked bootloader device...I will loose signal and can be everything related to IMEI.
Sad thing with unlocked bootloader P2 is fastboot flashing don't flash modem. There me be some fix process for unlocked bootloader.
For bootloader locked anything people do is a solution.
Also its not necessary to delete modemst1,st2.
Just reflashing stock will fix.

For bootloader locked you can do anything to fix. Flashing anything can fix it. Bcz fastboot flash can rework modem. Everything is a fix.
For bootloader unlocked devices fastboot don't flash modem files. Only way is to install custom ROM...Dail *#*4636#*#* and selecting Automatic and restarting the device fix sim1 4g only error.
*#*#4636#*#* U.S settings problem stays even user updates from S062 to S244 via OTA. Like IMEI stays this setting to stays.
Never hit erase after unlocking bootloader in future for any signal or modem reasons. This lenovo p2 can screw your Android experience

Never suggest without knowing everything completely. You know and seen one side of a coin. P2 will show you real stars if you ever tried to erase or delete modem stuff after unlocking bootloader. You don't kill someone's phone with unlocked bootloader....stay away from stuff you have no idea.

Even nandroid backup don't help restoring signal and ear piece sound errors....this is p2 and you can't flash fastboot modem image and you can't even relock bootloader. this is not normal like rest of the phones you used. Only QCN backup with QPST can backup IMEI+ rest and restore without issues. Only QPST Qfil flashable image bring back bootloader unlocked and messed up P2. This QPST image has to come from Lenovo, or someone has to make it with some internal sources and tools. So P2 is not normal stuff you used till now..it's locked Lenovo great sh*t....I don't know what they gain with bootloader warranty terms. But it's a hard messup ship for developers on XDA.
I bought a used P2 and I get no signal when inserting my SIM. I restored a nandroid backup from another P2 (Boot, Data and System). Could that be the reason it's not working? In that case, I wouldn't understand why it would have such an impact.

I had no idea that could happen when you only flashed boot.img, data and system (same OS version). Used to do it all the time when I owned a couple of LG G2s.
i did the erase modem and now have no signal at all now what do i do

no cell service after IMEI repair

i accidentally wiped the IMEI off of my nexus 5 when trying to repair my EFS partion (which was corrupt at the time), since i had the original value on a sticker on the back i tried to repair it. i finally managed to repair it by reflashing the radio image, then using the qualcom nv tools to write it back. my main problem is i cannot connect to the mobile network (which is at&t) after the repair, i reflashed the stock rom and updated it to the latest version (i used android lollipop in the repair process), then i manually set the APN settings according to at&t support page and still no luck. is there anyway to restore my mobile connection?
I have no clue if my suggestion is valid in this situation or not, but I know there are root apps and Xposed modules that can change IMEI. Perhaps you can try one of those to re-apply the IMEI to the system? Sadly I have no experience with doing this myself. Note that if you try this it will apparently erase various data.
I am aware of the xposed modules, however they are only temporary and need to be set each time you switch to a new ROM. in my case I plan to switch to Ubuntu touch or Sailfish OS when I get everything working again, which xposed does not work on. I did make a permanent change via the qualcom nv tools, but I am beginning to think I erased more than the IMEI. I know the MIED is only a few characters short of the IMEI, so thats restored, but I ended up with an ESN being written to the device even though I had not entered one. I am not sure if it was randomly generated somehow or if there is a way to figure out what the ESN should be from then IMEI. I also heard of baseband data being stored in the EFS partition, although I did flash a radio image to it prior to writing the IMEI and i think a radio image would likely have that data. I have no idea about the other types of data that a radio image wouldn't contain that would be essential to connecting. Any ideas?

The single most dangerous fastboot command you can execute on a Moto device is fastboot erase all. This literally wipes all of the device partitions, including the /pds, /hob and /dhob partitions, which store your device's unique identifiers such as IMEI/MEID, ESN, Mac address, etc. If you did not back up these partitions prior to rrunning fastboot erase all, the data is forever gone. Because these partitions are sensitive and designated as protected by the bootloader, they can be extremely difficult to rewrite.
I wish my news could be more favorable. However, I have never seen a single Moto device recovered after a fastboot erase all command was run. Even by intentionally hard bricking your device by corrupting /sbl1, for example, thus forcing Qualcomm's EDL mode and an emergency firmware restoration, you still face the daunting obstacle of restoring your unique device ID partitions.
I believe that, other than a media player, custom ROM test device, etc., your Moto is toast. For your sake, I do hope that I'm wrong and that somebody more knowledgeable than myself can help you recover it. Good luck, and I sincerely hope your beloved Moto can be restored to fully working order.
For future reference, when flashing a stock firmware package via fastboot, it is rarely necessary to execute any type of fastboot format commands. Once you have flashed all files within the firmware package, the following fastboot erase commands will suffice:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase customize
fastboot erase carrier
fastboot erase modemst1
fastboot erase modemst2
fastboot erase userdata
It should be noted that, by default, fastboot formats all pertinent partitions automatically while you are installing the firmware images via fastboot flash commands. For example, when you execute
fastboot flash system system.img_spars....
fastboot will first format the /system partition prior to installing the system sparsechunk images in the package.

Mi Note 10 IMEI lost and baseband repair, QCN backup causes recovery loop

I have a CC9 Pro Premium. Even if i can't fix my problem, hopefully this story will PREVENT people from messing with their IMEIs... I hope no one ever goes through what I just did
I'm obviously by no means encouraging changing IMEIs, even in certain 3rd world countries where it could be necessary!
So here's a detailed backstory: When you purchase a phone where I live, you need a valid passport in order to pay tax and register it's IMEI number, and if not you get cut off by your operator within a month.
I didn't have one, since it also takes about 4-8 months to process, and I couldn't even preform a request due to the corona virus situation.
So, being the ignorant idiot I am, I thought it would be a great idea to change it's IMEI number till I can register the original one, since a lot of people do this over here apparently, white market
I followed a tutorial I found online (And re-posted on XDA, so there's nothing really wrong with it), and here's what happened:
(Root, TWRP and Diag is OK in all steps)
I made a .qcn backup using QPST build 480, saved the original somewhere safe, edited the copy, wiped modemst1, modemst2 and fsg, then restored it
*phone reboots*
Everything's the same, and still getting reception, no change
Took another backup and saw it was the same, so I give up
The next day I try again, but this time is when the problems started... I take another QCN backup just to be sure, and it's slightly larger (Could be because I just inserted a 2nd SIM for the first time right before it), edit it, then wipe modemst1, modemst2, fsg and this time: "fsc" since I saw someone do it in another tutorial for the Mi Note 10
*phone reboots*
*boot animation*
*resets and goes to recovery*
I was shocked. I wipe the 4 partitions again and the phone boots normally, nothing has changed (apparently).
So I put my SIMs in and go watch a movie. Then I switch it on, only to see there's no reception!!!
I wipe the partitions, and restore the first original backup... boots to recovery again...
Wipe... Boots normally... restore the 2nd original one (slightly larger, both sims)... boots to recovery...
Then I just decide to miflash a fastboot rom, maybe that will get things back to normal!
So I wipe, flash rom... IMEI and Baseband now Unknown... Yikes...
I next find an xQCN backup online for the Mi Note 10 that only has a single IMEI in it, that belongs to the 2nd sim (SIM 1 550 only, QCN View, the 1st 550 missing)
Replace it with my original and reboot, IMEI 2 and baseband is back! But no reception, even after multiple reboots...
I wipe partitions again, IMEI 2 is still there... Interesting...
I continue trouble shooting, even: wiping the partitions, restoring the original backup, flashing fastboot rom... still boots to recovery (Mi Recovery of course), setting 755 permission for modem files...
------------------------------------------------
SUMMERY:
I need to find out why the original backup keeps booting to recovery!!! Also some information about "fsc" partition would be nice, since wiping that probably started the whole issue (Is it a backup for fsg?!)
Important things I discovered:
1) Wiping modemst1 and modemst2 at the same time is enough for the phone to boot
2) The reboot to recovery (Recovery loop?) with the original backups is caused on an OS level, because one time it took so long that I even saw the lockscreen for half a second before it rebooted (no SIMcard in the phone either)
3) After hours of dorking I found 2 other similar instances that could be related:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/ze...onor-qcn-file-ze550kl-z00ld-ww-t3520647/page4 (Page 4-5)
(Normal boot using a custom rom?? Interesting... maybe Xiaomi.eu made no difference for me because it's still pretty much just MIUI)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ym0FP4BkY0 (The bottom comment):
"We cannot repair both SIM slots.
We can only repair SIM2 slot for IMEI repairing. After IMEI repair process, SIM1 IMEI getting '0' value. When we are trying to repair both SIM slot phone is entering the Bootloop and entering the recovery mode(twrp). Thats why we are remove SIM1 IMEI from qcn file and this time we can will repair to SIM2 slot. Do you know this Problem ? What can we do to solve this problem? Thank you in advance for your help."
Regards, and many thanks... DON'T MESS WITH IMEIs!!!

So far it only seems possible to restore sim 2, I contacted a professional IMEI dealer and this is what he said:
"IMEIs cannot be changed simply through a USB port on modern snapdragon SOCs. Only the secondary sim modem can be restored, because the primary sim is locked to the chipset. When tampered with, it goes into a lockdown state which means it can probably never be used again unless a breach is found"
I sold the phone and got a Nokia 9 Pureview, much more consistent but still has it's own issues

If it's related to the IMEI, multiple guides have already been made since I made this post. Just search for it on YouTube!
If not, could be a bad rom, bad recovery, incomplete unlock, etc.
Try a stable Orange Fox Recovery, that might fix it

Just flash the SIM 2 QCN I provided (edit the IMEI), and write the IMEI using pirated box software for free, you can find everything you need on YouTube. When I had the problem, pirated box software for the Mi Note 10 wasn't available yet

Hi , same things happen to me.I have mi note 10 lite.
before the dealing to imei I take modemst1,modemst2,and fsg backup via dd codes.
and take qcn and xqcn backup via qpst.
And after that In fastboot commend I write
"fastboot erase modemst1"
"fastboot erase modemst2"
"fastboot erase fsg"
so my imei have gone. When I edit the qcn ( imei1 and imei2 both) and flash back to the phone. phone is going to recovery mode and nvdata is corrupted error happen. There is two possibility to the save to phone. First one you wipe-data in stock-recovery or again in fastboot mode you have to erase modemst1,modemst2,fsg.
So I erased again and open the phone.
This time I edited qcn file (only imei2,imei1 codes deleted in codes line and string) so my edited qcn only exist imei2 codes.
so I flashed back to phone and imei1 shows 0 and imei2 shows my original imei(I want to recover my original imei). and after that in the adb I flashed my stock modemst1,modemst2,fsg via dd codes and (also some secret codes and combination ) and after reboot my both imei show and start working.I dont know the reason but somehow my phone skip the security.Interesetingly .I guess phone security in the software not to hardware.
I want to check something so I tried 20 time to flash my stock backups via dd codes but it is only work 2 time whenever I tried the flash and after reboot my phone add ramdump(app 2 gb every time) files in the main stroage ( I search it,it is crash log). Interesting
Right now I search to skip security so I find some codes in build.prop
"ro.miui.restrict_imei=1" I think this one cause the problem to change imei so I try to disable it but I cant change to build.prop because in android 10 you can't mount system(rw) so cant change to build.prop.I think only solution is flashing edited system.new.dat file but I cant decompile system.dat.file so .
After Android 10 magisk root app just work in systemless way(this is not even a root not like the old time). You have root but you cant change anything with root access so in originally this is not root and it is sucks and bull****.
Do you know any rom tool for the edit system.new.dat file or how can I create new custom rom so if I success it I want to change both imei. I googled it but every tool is too old to use.
Regards..
i have problem with mi 8 no basedband unknow and restart.....no qcn write...try with UMT or QFIL not work.

I read all your whole post and I can suggest to try to use XiaoMiFlash.exe of 2019-12-06 (WARNING: option below must be CLEAN ALL to save your unlocked state of the Bootloader) for flashing back to Android 9 in Fastboot mode original flash (those of about 4GB) , after that you can try to edit the build.prop with some Apps that work with root / Magisk.
But please, 1st I really urgently need your 4 partitions backup (also the fsc), can you send to me?
TIA and best regards!

Thank you for posting your findings on the thread! I believe the solution for Mi Note 10 users could be flashing Android 9 and changing that build.prop line, we need someone to confirm this. I hope you discover a fix for your phone as well, please write a step by step guide if so. Good luck!

IMEI is gone after first call

I have very weird case. I have upgraded my phone (Smasung Galaxy A31 - dual sim) to Android 12. I did factory reset and cleared all data.
Now, when I configure phone from scratch, everything is OK until I make a call. I can call anybody and I can talk how long I want (after last test It was more than 2 minutes). As soon I end up the call both IMEIs in my phone are gone, phone shows "service unavailable", In the phone settings I can see "IMEI 1: Unknown" "IMEI 2: Unknown" and of course I'm not able to do any other call. Reset of the phone do not help at all.
All I can do in this case is Factory Reset - after that again I can make only one call and IMEIs are gone.
I have observed such behavior sometime ago. I thought it was some ROM issue, so I've flashed previous one (with Android 11) and phone was working fine. Unfortunately I didn't notice that recently Samsung has changed binary version of the firmware and now I'm doomed - I cannot flash old firmware anymore and there are no custom roms for my phone model.
I have rooted the phone and I've tried several tools to force IMEI but none is working for me.
I have no NVRAM backup. As I read the problem may be located there - but if so, then why I can do one call at all?
What could be the cause of such weird behavior?
Do a Google search for "restore-imei-number-after-an-nvram-clear": Dozens findings ...
So also this one:
[GUIDE] Restore IMEI number after an NVRAM clear
This thread will go over restoring the IMEI number if you cleared the NVRAM (or fully formatted your phone). The official tool to use is the SN Writer tool from Mediatek but as the P60 processor is not compatible with that, I had to search for...
forum.xda-developers.com
@xXx yYy
I didn't clear NVRAM. I mean at least I'm not aware of it. Correct me if I'm wrong but if NVRAM is cleared/broken I shouldn't be able to do ANY call, right?
And as I wrote, I already observed such issue on my phone long time before and then the solution was to downgrade ROM to previous version and phone was working fine - so I assume that NVRAM is ok, right? I cannot dowgrade it now due to changed Binary Version
I'm struggling with this issue since last two weeks and I also wanted to verify if my NVRAM is fine. But I cannot turn my phone into Meta Mode. Do Samsung devices have it at all? (Samsung Galaxy A31 dual sim)
My phone is rooted and have TWRP flashed:
Can I somehow access NVRAM from TWRP and check what is going on there?
Can I somehow access NVRAM from Magisk (modules) / LSPosed and check what is going on there?
IDK. Reason: Have neither TWRP nor Magisk ever installed on any of my phones.
I have found some workaround for this issue here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/fixed-rooted-a325m-suddenly-no-imei-no-sim.4386753/post-86588571
After applying it, there is still some glitch (it looks internal modem restarts after each call and I'm getting some notification about that) but at least I'm able to do calls without Factory Reset.
