32GB=sufficient storage? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Self explanatory title (note I'm asking "sufficient", not "enough")
How are you guys finding the onboard storage situation w/ your 32GB models? I'm unclear how much use the SDcard would be. Sure, you can point your camera + Spotify cache to the SDcard instead but just looking at my iphone 6, I would still have need another 17-18GB to cover other apps and their data (this is w/o a silly amount of games). I know you can move some apps from onboard storage to your SDcard, how do you find the performance difference?
A bit bummed over SG's seemingly shortsighted decision to limit most global markets to the 32GB variant. From what I've seen online and with a few demo units, actual free usable storage comes in around 14-16GB, which is fairly pitiful. If Android "only" uses 8GB, where's the extra? Is TW and other add in that large?
NB: I posted the same question in the S7 Edge forum, but I'm curious what the regular S7 community thinks about this topic

I guess 32gb is pretty enough and do the job very well , but 64gb is the perfect storage in my opinion.

That story was so misleading to most ppl, the guy who showed that screenshot had 16gb free after he installed his own apps, now ppl think it only has 16gb free out of the box !

Yeah, it's frustrating how the tech media scaremongered that false info around. Storage out the box is ~24GB for US carrier versions (8.08GB taken by Android System) and ~25GB for unlocked models (7.27GB taken by Android System).

With microSD that's easy, I could get by with 16GB no problem.

I had 16GB on my S5 with a 128GB µSD, but the 16GB internal memory was really an issue since moving apps to the SD card is not always working as it should (I had to use FolderMount to solve my issues, but I'd like to avoid having to find workarounds like that).
32GB should be ok though.

No i don't have mine yet, im just good at math, 32-8=24

I had 64Gb on my S6, and barely made it to 10gb of apps. 24 gb for apps/data is no problem I would think since you can save music/photos to the SD card.
Every phone that I've had SD card on has always been 16gb or 32gb phone an I've never needed anymore than that.

I've moved all my games to my SD card and performance is fine for those type of things.

For me 32 (24) GB is definitely not enough..
I want the 64gb version at a minimum.

haha right. the demo unit i played with also had 16GB free, but i couldn't tell how much of that was demo-related bloat

UK Exynos S7 = 7.27GB System Memory
Leaving ~24.5GB available.

The only thing on my phones which begin to hit storage problems were Titainum backups along with my podcast library. Everything else would probably fit in less than 10 gb, and that includes hearthstone.

AppMgr III and a 64gb sd card works for me just fine. Of course AppMgr III can no longer clean the cache all at once. It wants you to go to the storage settings for each app and empty the cache.

[Q] Free Internal Memory on first boot?

I know it has 1GB Internal storage but how much of that is used by Android/Sense and how much is left for the user?
I have seen some reports that say that the Sensation actually has 4GB internal but only 1GB is user accessible. Does this mean that the other 3GB are used for OS/Sense and the user sees the full 1GB free on first boot?
TIA
Correct. The actual amount of available memory will be approximately 1.20 GB.

Thanks, I can live with 1GB as long as it's all for me and not also taken up by Android/Sense
What happens when the 1gb space runs out. Can I not install anymore apps? 1 gig is quite small if its only for apps.
I will be coming from an iPhone, so you can understand my memory question.
Thanks.

Even though the iPhone has 16/32 gigs of internal memory and all of that is technically available for apps/games, I HIGHLY doubt you are using anywhere close to a gig. Apps are VERY small, shockingly. Also most games which are the biggest apps you can get on Andriod install all the extras on your SD card and never make a footprint on the internal memory. Basically what I mean by this is, if you use 1 GIG for apps... you sir have WAY to many apps lol. I have about 70 apps (not including system apps) and I am only using 578MB of my 1.2 GB interal memory. Most of those apps I could easily uninstal as I seldom use them, but I dont feel like it lol
I have about 8 gigs worth of apps/games on my 16gb iPhone 4. Quite a few of the decent arcade games are about 400mb.
I dont think I have too many apps on my iPhone and I would of thought most iPhone users have much more than 1gb worth of apps on their phones. You can never have too many apps
Can you install more than 1gb of apps on the Samsung Galaxy S2's internal memory?
If so, then why cant we install to the memory card when we run out of internal memory?
Would make things so much easier. I'm hoping that this will not put me of the Sensation when I finally get my hands one one
All I can say to that is damn... that is a lot of freaking apps. I have what I feel is well more then enough games and apps on my phone and haven't hit a gig. I should ask my cousin how much he has on his iPhone. I could never have that much stuff on my phone. And yes you can install 90% of apps on your SD card as well so you should be fine if you do hit your 1 GIG. Mostly widgets are the only thing that can not be installed on the SD card
Well thats good to know. At least I wont be worrying so much about running out of memory.
I don't play with half of my apps regularly, but it's good to know that they are there if I get bored

Having an iPad and an iPod I can understand your thinking. But with android even the big apps store their data ie game sounds etc on the sd card and the initial app is really small. There is a thing called apps to sd where you can choose to have the apps on the sd. Also as long as the sensation gets rooted at some point correct me if I'm wrong but you should have no problem filling your sd card with whatever apps you want as google have opened the file size restrictions for apps for developers.

internal storage

why did htc only put 1 gb of internal storage into this phone. does anyone know what the reasoning was by doing this.first reports had it with 4 gb of internal storage now its 1gb. i know you can add memory via sd card but why not just make the internal memory 16/32 gb. not bashing the phone, i have mine on preorder and cant wait. this will be my first android phone, but just would have liked it to come with that much onboard.

How is ADATA as a card supplier? I've only ever used Kingston & SanDisk & never had any issues. I've been looking in to getting a class 10 16GB card for when tmous drops the Sensation on the 8th & newegg has this one (when it comes back in stock).

Supposedly it has 4GB but only 1GB is user accessible (1.1 from what others here have reported).
first android. start learn. 1gb is nand data partition. (4gb all nand, system, cashe, data) used for system data (contacts, sms, u.t.t.) and apps. cant used for downloads and media. not need more.
but it would be better to have 16gb internal storage cause flash storage is always faster than a sd card (at least in terms of access time)
Seriously guys....it's no problem.
I got my sensation 3 days ago, installed 35+ apps and it hasn't even made a dent in the internal memory.
It's not like the desire if people are thinking it'll come to that.
After 35+ apps, i still have 800mb left of memory. I've got big games installed.
Seems a lot automatically install onto SD card without even telling it.

They did it because it was cheaper to put a smaller amount of NRAM in the phone.

Of the 8 or so Adata cards I have purchased over the years, (With 4 kids, a wife and my toys, MP3 players phones, cards for work) I have only had to RMA 1 card, one time and they had an amazingly great support group here in the US.
Very happy with their products!
Good to hear Barff1984. sorry but i am new to android so i though 1 gb of storage was not going to be enough for apps. this will be my first android/htc phone and just want a great first experience.
As a current Desire owner, internal memory is the real killer for me. I've not been able to install an app in months as there is no room left. I'm thinking about upgrading to a Sensation mainly because of this (and it's just SO fast!). Just wish it had an amoled screen like my Desire. It looks so washed out in comparison.
it's 100x better than the desire when it comes to apps. I'm running out of things to download now (V heavy app user) and still have 70%+ space left of internal
So yea, don't worry about the internal memory....I've yet to find an owner who said they've run out of space. Unlike the desire.
It's actually quite strange moving from a desire. I used to have to delete a lot of apps, then reinstall at a later date when i wanted them. My Appbrain account was constantly used to reinstall...with the sensation though, i just installed everything...I'm going app-happy

Any drawbacks with the 16GB model?

Guys,
I'm looking to get a 10.1 Note to replace my TF201 32GB model.
Trouble is here in the UK the only configuration is the 16GB model.
As such I am concerned what with software ever growing at an alarming rate it won't take long before that internal memory is full.
Therefore, I'm coming to those who already have the 16GB model to ask "have any of you found any drawbacks with the 16GB Note 10.1"?
16GB = 11+GB in user available storage

I had a 16GB, and switched it out for 32GB within 30 days. I had no problems with it per se-- it worked great.
But I was alarmed that Android OS and Samsung features/bloatware took up more than 25% of that 16GB! The available storage at first boot was 11+GB.
If you are comfortable with using a micro-SD card to hold your data and apps, then the 16GB is probably fine. I prefer to keep my apps installed on the device itself when possible for those occasions when I swap the SD card out for one reason or another. So for me, 32 GB (OK, 28+ available GB) was better than 11+GB.
JC
Nope, no problem whatsoever with the 16GB version. It'll be quite hard to fill up the space with apps, movies and music are more likely. But yes, you can just get microsd card if you need more than 16gb. I'm using one, SanDisk 32gb microsd that I got from amazon when they had a huge offer on it and it works great.

Some Apps have an additional data storage of over a GB each.
Surely this data gets stored in the internal 16GB and not the external MicroSD card.
That being the case for storage of your Apps additional data files, the MicroSD doesn't come into play.
I use my MicroSD card purely for non data files, as in music, movies and work related files.
Therefore with only a portion available from the initial 16GB and with one App's data files of whom may require many hundreds of MB'S for storage it's not going to be long before the internal space is full.

Thanks... but that does require root and it will be something I will not be able to carry out given my IT department will effectively be looking after my Tablet.
No drawbacks really other than the lower storage space. I had a white 16gb at first. After installing my apps and alot of games, I saw my storage space dwindling. So I returned it and got a 32gb. Now if you not a heavy gamer, you should be fine with 16gb. There are few apps that I know of that uses tons of storage space. Only one that comes to mind is. Google Earth. With microsd card, you could store all of your movies, pictures, music, etc... on it.
I wonder why they limiting the UK to only 16gb. Is there no other place that'll deliver a 32gb there?
If I remwber right, out of 16gb, only like 11-12 or so gb is available to use. The OS uses up remaining space. Games are the only ones that can easily be 1-2gb total. Good luck deciding. This Note 10.1 is an excellent device. My first Samsung tablet. More than exceeded my expectations. It works great out the box. Plus its specs is telly good also. Samsung quadcore Exynos4 and 2gb of ram & S-pen.
All good here! I'm not rooted, and with plenty of apps installed, 10.9 free space. I route all apps output, pic, vids etc to my extSdCard that I can.
That will save a tremendous amount of space.

Hi demandarin, nice to catch you over here.
Even though I am not a heavy gamer I do have a number of business Apps that consume huge amounts of additional data which none can be moved to the external sd card unfortunately (and no I can not root ~ without having an argument with my IT team). So yes that 11GB remaining does concern me.
Samsung do this to us each time be it a phone or tablet.... They tend to put the 16GB models to SIM free, 32GB models to carriers and the 64GB just don't make it over here.

You are fortunate in being able to root.... I would jump to it were it not for my IT team.
That's the problem, I save my hospital some money by placing it under their control and this is one of the hurdles you come under.
As to caching, yes totally agree...... I do it all the time on my 16GB Nexus 7 which is always a pain in keeping those MB's free.

[Q] Amount of internal storage available for installing apps

Hi all,
Does anyone know how much internal memory is available for installing apps? I know the Note 10.1 comes with 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, but how much of the storage can I use for apps? The reason I'm asking is because recently, I keep getting messages on my Galaxy S2 phone about low memory (only ~200MB free) when installing new apps. And I don't even have that many apps installed. Apparently, there's only 2GB for apps and 11.5GB for storing files like MP3s and videos. I assume the remaining 2.5GB is used for the OS and other internal apps.
Given that this is a tablet, I would expect there to be more than 2GB of memory for apps, especially for the 32GB version. It would be disappointing if that's not the case.
Thank you.

Anyone using a 128GB sdcard

Just wanted to know if anyone is using a 128GB micro sd /xd card with the s5
if so have you had any issues? are you rooted? do you have an ext4 partition?
Im thinking of getting one this week using a 28GB ext4 partition and 100GB of extra storage and copying / expanding the partitions I have on my current 64GB variant
I'm using one, with no problems

Oh didn't know the S5 supported SD cards that large.
I'd be very very surprised if that's really 128GB.
I would soak test it before you put data on above about 4-8GB. I would also have a good close look at the partition table.
Just speaking from experience unless that's a second user one that's about a half to a third of the best prices out there.

Using top dollar sandisk 128gb card. works flawlessly. no issues at all. wish I could figure out how to get burst photos to go straight to card.
This is the card I'm using. Been running it for a few months with no problems whatsoever.
128 Gb works just fine. It's class 10 sdcard. No issues. Unrooted+rooted.
Tried this card on a lg g pro 2 though. There i had a lot of problems.
I thought the S5 could only handle 64GB memory cards? I'm using a 64GB sandisk one and it works perfectly! In my opinion thats more than enough and I got it at a good price :fingers-crossed:

Please do that check before you start taking irreplaceable pictures. This is what I use, takes forever, but well worth the wait.

Adata 128gb sdhc??
so this is the card that I bought off ebay. Ebay you say...... well its a huge piece of ****. to start it is a fake, found that out when I started to write to it and after it reached around 8GB it started to overwrite what was already there! SD card test app confirmed it. check before you buy, some fakes can be identified easily. below is what ADATA replied to me when I had asked them WTF was wrong my damn card. like it mentions below, check the manufacturers website for any pictures of the cards and related packaging and descriptions. bottom line is you get what you pay for. A $20 card is far from a $100. for me the card was cheap so I was willing to risk it, but I saw some Samsung cards as high as $80 and they were also fakes. Ill wait for the price to go down, and get it from a local reputable retailer.
Thank you for contacting ADATA.
You mentioned that you have a 128GB MicroSDHC memory card. However, ADATA has not manufactured any MicroSD memory cards that has exceeded the capacity of 64GB (please visit the following link to our current memory card product offerings):
http://www.adata.com/index.php?action=product&cid=7&lan=en&cid1=3
Also, MicroSD memory cards with capacities of 64GB and above are categorized as MicroSDXC, not MicroSDHC.
There’s a suspicion that you might have purchased a counterfeit product. To verify, please compare your item against the product images we have listed on our web pages. We could assist you with identifying the product as well if you could send us images of your product.
no, i haven't fill up my 16 gb internal yet :v
Using 128GB Class 10 on my Verizon S5 and have no issues at all.
Biggest problem I had was transferring files from previous 32GB to the 128GB (A lot of files, took a while).
I am also rooted and I have to say being rooted is better with the bigger (or any) SD card that way you can use the SDFix app and allow file browsers to write to SD.
I'm using a SanDisk Ultra 64 GB card for now but will jump to 128 GB sooner rather than later since it seems everyone has had good luck with using legit cards. I'm kind of waiting for a sub-$100 deal, though.
Anyone find any discounted 128gb SD cards on Amazon or anything?

It should just work, storage is storage. I am not sure what in the software, memory IO, or processors would make much of a difference. My 64GB samsung Class10 card works in the oldest of old devices that I have as far as android phones go, no problem. Even back in the android 2.3 OS. My Mifi hotspot even accepts and shares my 64gb sd cards' contents over DLNA.
I bought 128 micro sd adata and I have one problem whit videos, when I copy or move any video from my internal memory to micro sd that videos don't play on my s5 video player. Anyone has solution for this problem??
