If I change launcher, do I lose the following features... - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hey all.
Still waiting for my preorder to arrive, but I had a question for you knowledgeable folk.
I really like the Google Now stock launcher. If I were to install that on my S7 Edge, would I lose the "edge" ability of the phone? And how about Samsung Pay?
I'm just thinking that those things are tied to swiping left/up from the homescreen, and so maybe they require the Sammy launcher. I'd be very happy if this weren't the case though!
Anyone got any idea on this?

No. Both should still work with any other launcher although you might have to launch mobile pay via the app link.

it's working well with other launchers on the S6 Edge, so I don't see why it wouldn't on the S7 Edge

Thanks guys! That's good to hear.
I'll try the TW launcher for a bit - not seen TW in a few years, but I'm pretty sure I'll miss the stock one quite soon. At least with Android you get the ability to swap them around whenever you like.

I can't see myself using the touch wiz launcher, I haven't used a stock one in years. but i just switched to a very very simple homescreen so I'm willing to give it a shot. I think I may have to disable the news articles and crap on the swipe left though. But again. I'll try it out for a day before going back to Nova.

Stock Android on Epic

I just want to be sure I am not missing anything - there are not any Epic roms out yet right? to put it a different way, every single epic owner on the planet is currently using the Sprint/Samsung factory version of Android 2.1, yes?
Have spent a number of hours on xda and google, but wanted to be sure I was correct on this one.
Just really anxious to get away from Touchwiz, it doesn't even really feel like Android.

You're correct, no custom roms yet. In the meantime you could install a different launcher such as launcher pro and adw launcher to give your phone a more aosp look

Honestly, after I installed ADW Launcher, Beautiful Widgets, rooted the phone, and uninstalled all the Sprint crap with Root Manager / Titanium Backup, I'm actually happy with what's left of Touch Wiz. The dialer / contacts / integration etc is actually pretty nice. My phone looks like stock 2.2 now, but has a few nice improvements.

Agreed. I think touchwiz is like a double edgd sword. One the one hand it has a ton of features and usability improvements, on thbe other hand it looks horrible. Launcher pro gets rid of the ugly and adds even more features.
I wouldn't want stock android even if it were available.

I'm pretty happy with the stock ROM. I just use LauncherPro instead of Samsung's launcher and it's fantastic.

touchwiz 4 port for infuse??

im wondering if anybody will port touchwiz 4 to the infuse its on just about every other phone and i know the infuse is relatively new still, but we have a few roms already and lots of dev that was done faster than normal so i don't see why it would take long to port a launcher. im not a dev so i don't really know but i would love if the tw4 launcher would come to infuse.

yes it was done on the vibrant for 2.2 so it is posible, just needs some libs and i think a framwork or services.jar mod or something. nopcodex indicated it might added to his bionix infinity rom. i wouldnt be surprised if mikey mike does the same.
touchwiz 4 features??
Hi all,
I am from india. i wanted to know whether the touchwiz 4 is modified for infuse or is directly taken from samsung galaxy s2?
I am asking this coz in touch wiz there is 3G 324M integration for Native video calling using phone calls as 3G services.
waiting for the reply!?!?

Try that. I used it for about a week it's actually quite smooth
I love this launcher, they have made so much progress with it. Very smooth.
You can back-up your homescreen and other pages so after you flash a new rom and reinstall your apps you go into the launcher settings hit restore! Voila all your pages/homescreen are back to your preferences. It even puts your widgets back where they belong!
Love it! I'll never flash without it!

I use this launcher as well and its great when it works, but at least a couple of times a day for no reason at all it will slow down and/or freeze up and I have to wait for abit for my phone to respond again. And sometimes it will crash as well and my phone will reboot.
Yeah, that happened to me too.
I love 4.0, but I couldn't stand that random reboots so I went back to Launcher Pro. I think I read somewhere that the reboots happen when your phone uses too much resources.
Using go launcher ex myself. A lot of themes online and it has the option to back up the launcher so that after a flash you can go right back to your home screens

Is anyone using ADWex...a question

Got my infinity a few days ago and have just started customizing. I used ADWex on my prime and planned on doing so with the Infinity (maybe until chameleon). Is anyone using it? Any issues so far?
One thing i noticed is that i do not have the status bar on top with the normal blue line? I was able to work around this using a shortcut to the adw settings, but i usually keep the status bar on until i am completely done with the build.
I also seem to lose all apps/widgets/icons on my main screen every 10 or so times that i hit the app drawer. hit the drawer again and they all come back.
Look forward to everyone's feedback. I had an entire hubs setup on my prime that i was going to work back to.
Thanks!

Hubs won't work because multipicture lwp lags like hell. Also, ADW is pretty outdated, hasn't been updated for a few months.
i agree it needs an update, i just havent had guts to swap launchers. I love the dock and functionality of adw.
BTW-multipicture is working on mine right now? 5 screens, 5 separate pics, no noticable lag. Are you having issues?
i have it working ok, also until chameleon (should get my beta key soon XD )
obviously increased colomns and rows for the tablet compared to my xperia s, but works well. not as smooth as i'd like, and yes its out of date by quite a long way, but ok until chameleon/jelly bean combo!
does anyone know if its ever going to be updated again, or is it dead in the water now?
I am going to assume that 90% are using stock ICS and the few that arent are APEX/NOVA right?
I just switched to ADWex because Apex and Nova were crashing all the time. The stock launcher wastes too much screen space so I was trying to find a launcher that would allow me to go edge to edge. ADWex does that and I've only had a few crashes with it.
It's an old launcher and doesn't like some widgets. I'm like everyone else, I'm waiting for Chameleon. Should get my email notice today!
Give Nova Launcher a try. Its really nice.
Do not assume any such thing...

I believe that isn't even a good working assumption. First, I suspect that first adopters are typically more experienced Android owners. In my experience, experienced users are rarely happy with many stock applications; hence not likely to be happy with the launcher and are willing to try other launchers.
For my self, I have yet to find a stock launcher whose functionality isn't limited. On my TF700t I switched it out a couple of hours after getting the tablet. Until recently I had been using, successfully, ADWlauncher EX. The other day I installed Nova Launcher to test it and it is the current 'default' launcher.
that is a good point for sure. I didnt think about the early adopter status.
Thoughts on Nova vs Adw EX?

You make us sound like angry old men unhappy with anything stock
Currently the best launcher for TF700T is..... GO LAUNCHER HD. Give it some times nothing can catch up with it. Currently it only has about 60% of the features of Go Launcher Ex. Go Launcher Ex has proved to be the top launcher for all smart phones.
Adwex is the only launcher i'll use on tablet. Soo much faster sand flexible than other launchers. Status bar is the only odd thing i've noticed, but can get to setting from menu.

TouchWiz vs Nova

Hey there,
Haven't seen too much debate on this topic regarding the S8. I hear TouchWiz has come along quite a ways since the S6-S7 days, but am still curious-- Do you prefer Nova or TouchWiz, and why?
I'm on the Oreo Beta, and don't have too many problems with the built-in TouchWiz, but I do have Nova Prime and rather loved it back in the day! I don't have too many of the stuttering / lag / battery eating issues I've heard reporting around using the TouchWiz launcher (at least that I know of), but hear that Nova isn't as lightweight and efficient as it was in the past.
Your take?
Such dead boards on the s8 section, think the HTC M8 still sees more life haha

I tried using Touchwiz but there were a few things that put me off.
1. It saves your app drawer position. This annoys me a lot.
2. Novas forcing Adaptive icons is great Samsungs drawer is just full of mismatched icons which bugs me.
I could live with Touchwiz is Samsung fixed 1. but otherwise Nova is just more customisable and handy.
Well tbh touchwiz has improved a lot and it really is a good launcher atm.
Evie launcher it's the best for me. Fast and rly good looking. I'm very disappointed from tw. Why don't let people change icons? Just to buy their ugly icon pack on theme store? BTW I'm coming from nova Launcher
Yeah well Nova really seems to do it for me... I had issues with Evie
Back to Nova for me, at least for a bit. TouchWiz has gotten pretty nice, but theres some things I just miss
The only thing I really like of SE Launcher are the animations, they're so smooth and makes the phone feel even faster
After the oreo final hits, a lot of people will move to nova launcher, mainly being because in oreo touchwiz, if you swipe a notification away, then the unread badge for that app also clears, this is so annoying, I've been using nova prime and tesla unread to get around this
Is this even a legit question? Battery life +performance + features, Nova is the way to go. Why gimp your phone purposely with no real benefit?
Nova anytime.
More customisable, more flexible, able to save layout, smoother and faster.

I don't know how it's useful lol, say you hadn't opened the message or email, you swipe it away then you won't even know that you have said unread message or email. I'm on the beta test and pretty much everyone has complained about this lol.

Well, I usually dismiss notifications I don't care about lol. Like any Facebook notification, so swiping them alway won't annoy me anymore with the badge.
I have never liked TouchWiz, Squircle icons look like crap IMO. I've been alternating between Nova and Action Launcher for quite many days, and love both the launchers. Though performance wise, Nova always comes out on top.
Only thing I would like to have in nova launcher is blurring the background when we open apps menu, like we have in touchwiz
Have you guys noticed that nova uses more battery than using normal he launcher? In my case it does

without touchwiz?

I never had a Samsung phone and thinking of maybe getting the s9+. One reason why is because I don't like there skin and touchwiz. I'm more of a stock nexus like person so I wanted to know if there are any good stock ish roms on the s8 and s8+ or if maybe you have any suggestions for a me.

Yeah..the hardware is great ,but the software...
And the worst part is when my 2 month old S8 Exynos, which I paid almost 750€ for, starts stuttering. Occasional lag is always present with TouchWiz.
Let's hope the S9 is not gonna do the same.

I know it is. I'm asking the s8 and s8+ users for there experience.
touchwiz stutters due to widgets and other bloatware running at the same time. side bar menu as well. s9+ will help loads with that extra 2GB. but s8+ runs fine on touchwiz when you stop all the unnecessary items running and taking up system resources.
I just use the Pixel launcher. Works great, no lag, custom icons. Hit up apkmirror.com. I got everything customized on mine.
Been using nova for years
