Long story, but here goes...
About a week ago I turned off my Droid. When I attempted to turn it back on it got stuck at the Motorola logo screen. After a few minutes it would reboot and do the same over and over. I had never rooted or done anything custom to the phone at any point. It was 100% stock original. Nothing had changed recently to suddenly cause an issue, no new apps or anything. I spoke with Verizon about it and they walked me through the process of attempting to boot to the recovery screen. During this call we found that I could not even boot to the recovery screen. I am outside of the warranty and inside of my renewal date.
Since I don't intend to pay for a new one I decided to try to fix it myself. My first attempt was simply to get to a point that I could boot to recovery. I flashed the phone with SPRecovery and sure enough I was able to boot to recovery. I then attempted to flash it with 2.2 and ended up back in the same situation with the boot loop. During all of this I noted that the Bootloader version was 2C.7C.
I then decided to go back to the SPRecovery/rooted configuration and attempted to load a custom ROM from Liquid. This also failed.
My next train of thought was to flash back to an older version of the Droid OS. I chose to flash to VZW_A855_ESD56_QSC6085BP_C_01.3E.01P_SW_UPDATE_03. Low and behold, that worked and the phone booted up and ran fine. It immediately updated to 2.1 update 1. I noticed after this flash that I was on Bootloader version 2C.6C.
Shortly afterwards I was prompted to install the OTA 2.2 update. After accepting and installing I was back to having a bricked phone. This was through the OTA update. Nothing I did or forced.
So basically, I can flash the phone back to VZW_A855_ESD56_QSC6085BP_C_01.3E.01P_SW_UPDATE_03 again and it works fine. But the second it tries to install the 2.2 OTA update or if I attempt to flash to the 2.2 image it gets stuck in the loop.
Notes that may be important:
1. I get the "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command" error when I am able to get into recovery.
2. I have been sure to wipe data, cache, etc and formatted the SD Card through the phone OS when possible.
3. I use Ubuntu to flash the phone as it seems more stable and easier for my preference (I like Linux commands )
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
I'm also stock in a bootloop, lost count already...
Ok, so I have an MZ601. Flashed with R.A.H._TWRPv2.6.3_BigPart_selinux and omni-4.4.2-20140321-1754+0100-everest-HOMEMADE (updated with latest omni versions as they became available).
Everything been working fine until two days ago, when Xoom froze. It had happened before a couple of times and a reboot had solved the problem. Did that, and this time it got stuck in a bootloop, only getting as far as the Omni splash screen before rebooting. Few reboots later, nothing improving, and then it didn’t get past the Motorola M splash screen.
Tried booting into recovery, frozen at teamwin splashscreen. Nothing was working. Rebooted few time, same thing. Connected to power, charged til green, left for extra 30 minutes, tried again, same problem. Switched off. Came back to it today and....
All of the following done via Fastboot:
Tried flashing non bigpart TWRP (R.A.H._TWRPv2.6.3), still stuck at teamwin splash screen. Flashed Clockwork recovery, booted into recovery fine, but couldn’t see memory card. Flashed Clockwork recovery touch version, same problem. Flashed back to TWRP non bigpart, and it booted into recovery fine, sdcard mounted fine, seeing all files. Excellent. Decided to reflash bigpart version, used reboot option in TWRP, it tells me there is NO OS INSTALLED.
Ok, that’s a bit odd. Must be corrupted or something, but might explain the original freeze and bootloop and then not even getting to Omni splash screen. Swiped to reboot. Flashed bigpart version of TWRP. Rebooted into recovery. Back to original problem, stuck at teamwin splash screen. Left it for 10 minutes just to be sure. No joy.
Tried retracing steps, flashing Clockwork recovery. Reboot. Teamwin splash screen. WTF? Try flashing Rogue recovery. Reboot. Teamwin splash screen.
Kinda confused. It’s like it’s telling me it’s successfully flashed but it hasn’t actually done anything. Power everything down, disconnect everything. Start again. Flash Clockwork recovery, reboot, displays teamwin splash screen, sticks. Flash TWRP, non bigpart, displays teamwin splash screen, sticks. Reboot. Flash TWRP bigpart. Reboot, displays teamwin splash screen, sticks.
Walk away in disgust so as not to throw something at Xoom.
Ok, TL-DR recap.
Worked fine for months
Two days ago, froze on Omnirom logo, got stuck in bootloop
After few reboots didn’t even make it to Omnirom logo, stuck on M screen
Flashed TWRP recovery, non bigpart, stuck at teamwin splash screen
Flashed Clockwork recovery, got into recovery, no SDcard
Flashed Clockwork recovery, touch version, same problem
Flashed TWRP non bigpart, got into recovery, could see SDcard and files, rebooted from within recovery to flash bigpart version, tells me NO OS installed
Reboot
Now, regardless of which recovery I flash it goes straight to teamwin splash screen and stays there.

Come on guys, 100 plus views and no replies? Surely somebody has an idea?
At the bottom of your tldr
Flashed twrp.. booted into recovery flashed bigpart twrp then says no OS.
It will say no OS cause bigpart would have wiped everything to resize the partition.
I've updated my TWRP to support bigpart and a few other things. Grab it from the pined thread by myself flash it and wipe everything but sdcard.
THen from the terminal in twrp type
df
Ensure the system is around a gig if so then you have repartitioned your /system
Then flash your bigpart Rom and gapps should be good to go from there

Cheers for the reply, but I'd already had it flashed and running fine for about three months, as I said in my first line:

Actually, reading that back, it may not have been clear enough that I meant I'd been running it that way for a while.
Oh, also in the TLR, I meant I rebooted so that I could flash TWRP bigpart from ADB/FASTBOOT, not that I flashed it from within TWRP (which is what I should have done since it turned out to be the one and only time I managed to get past the splash screen). It told me there was no OS installed after I flashed the non bigpart version of TWRP and before I rebooted from within the recovery.
My point is I can't get past the splashscreen, no matter what I do, so I can't use any of the recovery / flash options in TWRP. I also can't flash any other recoveries using ADB or FASTBOOT because no matter what I flash it still stays stuck on the TWRP splashscreen when I reboot into recovery, whether I use FASTBOOT REBOOT or reboot using the volume rocker.

@crazylegs90 did you figure this out man? Im stuck at twrp start screen..
When I attempt to go to Cofface's Baidu page to download his 5.1 TWRP version, I get a message saying the content is no longer available. Specifically, Google Translate shows "Lol, you visit the page does not exist." Does anyone happen to have a copy they're willing to share? Or is there some issue with the 5.1 version that would suggest that I shouldn't use it? If I shouldn't ask for some reason, I apologize. Otherwise, thanks in advance.

Thanks very much for the link! I think I must have some deeper problems, as every time I flash this recovery (and another version I found in my old downloads), I just get stuck in a boot loop. I was able to use TWRP when I was on B015, but for some reason, I can't get it to work on B106. I'm using:
fastboot flash recovery c:\android\twrp_cn.img
However, like I said I just get stuck in a boot loop. When I flash the stock recovery, everything starts working again.

Did you unlock your bootloader?
Yes, it is. I was able to run TWRP when I was on B015. The phone is rooted, so I've just been using Titanium Backup to back everything up before I wipe the phone, but it would be nice to take a Nandroid backup instead of having to reinstall from TB.

Thats the same problem I have. I used the other twrp recovery https://mega.nz/#!l5kmUByA!41uExNuasZRgLBML9TTSp8myX-_F6UgQZuE2F2BRZUE
This one worked with out boot loops for me. you can give it a shot.
Thanks for the link! I can now get into TWRP. However (sadly), after I leave TWRP, it reboots directly back to TWRP. I've tried rebooting from TWRP into the system and shutting down, but each time, it just goes straight back to TWRP. I was able to boot into fastboot, so I reflashed the boot.img file, but it still goes straight to TWRP. I actually have had this issue before, and I wasn't ever able to figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as usual.

I had that exact same problem twice on Kangvip B015. When I would restart it would all of a sudden automatically boot into TWRP every time and never boot into the OS. When that happens, in TWRP make a backup, then Fastboot flash the stock ROM (system, boot, cust, recovery, user data etc) then when it boots do a factory data reset, then reroot, flash TWRP and restore from the backup you made. The OS will boot from your backup. I dunno why this happens, maybe it has something to do with with Kernel.
I've tried it a couple of times now, and I'm still not getting it to boot past TWRP once I flash the recovery. It was able to take a backup with TWRP, but when I restored it, I still had to restore the stock recovery before I could boot into the system. At worst, at this point, I can always flash TWRP, take a backup, flash the stock recovery, and then have my system back. It's a few extra steps, but I think I'll do this until I find a custom ROM that I like. I greatly appreciate the help so far.

Reflash the stock b106 recovery and wipe user data and cache, Then reflash twrp recovery and restore your backup. It should boot then.
To follow up, I tried using the updated version of TWRP that you (mtyler7807) posted in the development thread and following the instructions above. I can flash the recovery, boot into it, and take a backup. After that, as long as I boot into the system, I'm fine. However, once I boot into recovery for the first time after that initial backup, it just reboots into TWRP every time. So, right now, I took a backup a day or so ago, and I've just avoided going back in to TWRP again. I have another X2 on the way (a 32GB version), so I'm hoping that I'll have better luck with that one.

As far as I know, I have not. I did do a complete wipe of everything (except the SD card) at one point using TWRP, but I've always restored the system using the stock system.img file. Right now, the Cust folder is showing five folders, with several more folders/files underneath. Is there a particular file I should be checking for?

I don't think so. It's weird how some of us have different problems than others. I've had zero issues with TWRP but lately my screen has been going crazy. My touches don't work, things jump it's like my digitizer is messed up but when I restart everything is fine again. So I reloaded everything and the problem went away. I guess I debloated too much last time.
Hi folks,
My NEW (RMA) Shield is rooted / TWRPed / 3.1 / and I applied the noOTA process to it so that they couldn't force-push some future undesirable OTA (or accidental bricking) at me.
Of course, as soon as I get settled in to the new unit with all apps and data where I want them, they do this new OTA.
What's the process for applying the latest OTA, given a rooted, TWRP recovery system? Do I just boot to TWRP, flash the full OTA, reflash noOTA, and be done? But wouldn't the full OTA kill TWRP, so I should reflash it?
Before I mess up this thing I want to make sure I get it right. I've got a PC so I can ADB/Fastboot sideload stuff if need. My main interest is in not messing up my data and apps.
Thanks
:highfive:

that's correct. this update in particular doesn't upgrade the recovery too, so TWRP won't be affected, but if you have an unlocked bootloader, you can just reflash TWRP at any time. for root, you might also want to flash SuperSU from TWRP (it will ask before rebooting if you don't install it yourself)
Thanks Bogdacutu.
I copied the full US LTE OTA 3.1.1 over to the internal memory (I used the downloads folder), rebooted to TWRP, and flashed it from TWRP. Before rebooting, to be safe I also flashed nomoreota.zip and then supersu.zip. On first boot I got the typical post-OTA "android is updating" thing where it optimizes the apps. Any idea what this app optimization is? I've always wondered... This app optimization process actually took longer than flashing the OTA and stuff.
After finishing the first boot, SuperSU told me it needed to update the binary, which failed. It suggested a reboot.
I rebooted normally (not going into recovery or anything first). This boot stayed on the NVIDIA boot up screen a lot longer than usual. after about 10 minutes like this I turned it off. After it was all the way off I turned it back on again. This time I let it go about 20 minutes. Still nothing past the NVIDIA boot screen. Crap.
I turned it all the way off. Rebooted with volume down button and was relieved to see it give the usual options (continue, recovery, fastboot, etc.). I let it go into recovery and got to TWRP in short order.
At this point I turned it off, as the battery was getting a bit low and I have to take my kid to a soccer game. I'm charging it in powered off mode until I get home.
Any ideas what to do next to get this thing booting into Android again?
Thanks
Marc
After it charged all the way up, when I got back from my kid's game, I booted back to TWRP and reflashed the OTA update.
I then told TWRP to reboot... it said something about should it reflash SuperSU script to preserve root. I agreed and let it reboot. It came back up in Android. I'll explore the situation and report back.
All seems well at this time.
According to rootcheck my root is preserved. SuperSU successfully updated binaries in normal (non-twrp) mode. Checked for system update. It said I was up to date. I booted back to TWRP, flashed nomoreOTA.zip again. Rebooted again, no problems. Back to normal, fully updated. Phew.
I'm not sure what went wrong the first time, but it seems OK now.
Well, not fully bricked, but it's completely non-working just the same.
I've had the K1 for a few years now and have been fine with the standard, stock OTA updates. Recently though I've been seeing constant notifications that I'm short on ram and after uninstalling apps, deleting old files, it would work ok for a few days and then start complaining about low memory again. So I figured that something must be corrupt and now is a good a time as any to root and see about flashing a new rom.
I've owned many android devices over the years and have rooted and patched most of them. so I'm familiar with the tools.
This time however, I think I must have crossed something up somewhere.
What I did was this:
Grabbed the minimal ADB package and fastboot drivers.
Booted into the bootloader and ran the fastboot oem unlock. No problem.
From the nVidia site, I then grabbed and flashed the latest stock image and recovery, just to ensure I was on a clean slate. No problem.
Flashed the latest TWRP for the device. No problem.
Flashed SuperSU. No problem.
Booted into the stock system to make sure everything was still working and it was. But, this is the start of where I maybe hosed things up(?).
While running stock, I converted the SD card to internal memory, just so I wasn't having to mess with it later, not thinking that I'd have to do it again anyway after flashing a new rom.
Rebooted back to TWRP and proceeded to flash the new rom (AOSP Extended (AEX) 5.8).
I flashed it by way of the sideload method rather than from a zip file sitting on the SD card. This all seemed to work just fine.
Next I went ahead and flashed OpenGapps Mini. This resulted in an error 70 and after reading about it, it was a simple matter of going into the advanced settings in TWRP and extending the system partition. Did that and OpenGapps then flashed with no problem.
Finally I wrapped it up by flashing tegra124-tn8-p1761-1270-a04-e-battery.dtb and rebooted.
... Nothing. Now I know that when flashing a new rom, the first boot can take some time, but I let it sit for about 2 hours with no result. It didn't appear to be boot looping, but instead just stuck on the nVidia boot screen. Forced it to boot back to the bootloader and brought up TWRP. I obviously did something wrong, so I prepared to reflash the stock image.
Did the wipe, flashed the files and rebooted. Again, nothing.
This time however, not only can I not boot to the system, I now also can't get back into recovery.
No matter how many times I reboot, or attempt to reflash anything, it hangs on the boot screen when attempting to get back into recovery.
So I'm stuck. I've tried reflashing TWRP, stock recovery and stock system, with the SD card in and out, a number of times, all with no joy.
I can access the bootloader, so I can at least run fastboot commands, but that's all I can do. Without being in recovery, I can't access an ADB shell if I need to repair anything.
If you're still with me after this rambling mess, do I have any hope at all in recovering this thing?
Hi,
I think the problem is in the modified .dtb try flash the original file.

I'm also sort of in the same boat i had a custom rom installed and decided to go back to stock os and now i'm stuck at either the Nvidia Logo or the Fastboot menu there's nothing else it let's me do i'd take any advice at this point. I can use Fastboot commands and I've tried Flashing Twrp.img and also flashing all the stock os which goes through with no problems i reboot the device and it's just stuck at the Nvidia logo
Ps: how did you manage to get back into recovery
Hello.
I think i had the same Problem.
I Flashed a Custom Rom, MiniGapps and the tegra...Battery file and since then i had boot loop an the NVidia Logo.
The Problem was: i flashed the tegra-Battery.ZIP file!!!
I noticed that i have to unzip it and flash teh tegra-..battery.DTP file.
since then it booted up again.
the OpenGappMini was buggy. it worked with the Nano!
Hope this helps for you as well!
OMG you guys. I did the exact same damn thing. Flashed the ZIP instead of the DTP file. 100 million thanks to you. I'm going to give it a shot now.
It worked! I wonder how many other folks didn't realize it wasn't a zip to flash to dtb and bricked their devices.
