Kind of at wit's end with the notification issues - Mate 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought this device knowing there would be potential notification issues, but I had seen mixed reports that the L29 model may not suffer from them. It took about a day, but they finally started showing up. My main issue is email. I have tried stock Gmail, Bluemail and Typemail (same app, basically). After the screen has been off for about 5 minutes, I stop getting notifications for email.
I have seen people blame this on doze, but my Nexus 6p isn't nearly this bad, at least not until it has been sitting for hours. I have tried everything to resolve this including:
Whitelist in battery manager
Whitelist in Doze settings
Notifications set to priority
Rooting and making Bluemail a system app (which I can't quite get to work for some reason)
Editing the doze settings with the doze setting editor app found on here
Running in Performance mode
Updating to B162
Disabling Phone Manager with Titanium Backup
Even all of these things in combination are not working. Nothing works. Since other Huawei devices have this issue, it doesn't seem like Huawei is planning to fix it. I know people want to blame Doze, but neither my Moto X Pure or Nexus 6P are this bad, both of which are running Marshmallow. Something else is going on with the ROM. Short of getting an actual Cyanogenmod port, I don't know that we'll ever see this resolved.
It's frustrating, too, because I like everything else about this phone, but this is a pretty big deal. A Smartphone that doesn't get notifications reliably is pretty useless.

I have the exact same issue as you, and have tried everything that you have tried as well.
Can't get it to work. It's like saying goodbye to a girl you really really love...
Please fix this somehow... anyone...?

Oh look, another thread about notification issues. This one should help. Has any of you made sure that mobile data stays on after screen goes off?

All settings are on, mobiledata during screen off, wifi always enabled etc.
It is not about receiving notification, it's about receiving them instant the same second as they are received.
We don't want to receive delayed 5-10mins notifications.
This happen both on mobiledata and on wifi as well.

Oh I can assure you that is a feature belonging to Android 6 called doze function. The phones who are updated to MM mostly received a not fully functioning version of Android 6.0. So you can not compare them.

What? So you're saying that the Nexus 6p has a "not fully functioning version of Android 6.0"? Go home, you're drunk. That phone does not have this issue, not to this extent.
It's not doze. I have manually edited the doze settings and the issue persists.

try disabling gmail, install outlook and protect it in the battery settings. then go into notifications and make sure it pops up how you want it to.

When i changed my locckscreen I started getting notifications regularly. Try a third party lockscreen app.

I wasn't even using gmail at first. I was using Bluemail (which is actually better than Outlook on Android) and I had the same issue. If it were that easy, I'd already be using a different email app.

I'm not drunk, I know this for sure. My LG G4 is also updated to 6.0 and now I also own a Huawei mate 8 and therefore I can tell the difference, it's huge. And about your nexus 6p I'm not sure, in any case I was talking about the updated phones.

My Moto X Pure is updated to 6.0 and has absolutely no delay with notifications, nor does my 6P, so there's a flaw in your logic.
This goes far beyond doze. This is something specific to the Huawei ROM and since previous Huawei phones (Mate 7, P8) had this exact issue on older versions of Android, it's pretty obvious that the problem lies with them and not doze.

Before I bricked my device I tested the hell out of this and found the issue.
Doze implementation is broken in the Mate 8.
The phone is supposed to wake up and check for notifications and it doesn't.
Turning off doze fixes all the issues on the Mate 8, at the cost of whatever benefit Doze would have offered.

It's certainly possible that it's broken for this device specifically. Fine, I'll bite. How do you disable doze with tasker? I thought I saw a tutorial on here before, but haven't been able to find it.

Run this command as root with Tasker.
dumpsys deviceidle disable
Or, even without root, use adb and run

It worked for me to get notifications, but yes, I really wish Huawei would have fixed it.
Maybe in an upcoming version it will be fixed.

I am interesting to see if S7 will also have this problem.

Can you tell us non rooted people how to do this? I have dev options available but don't know how to do the rest.

If you are not rooted, you will need to plug into your computer and run the ADB command mentioned before EVERY TIME YOU BOOT UP THE DEVICE (sadly)
The command is:

Anyone having buyers remorse?

Well, one week till CES where Huawei will announce the US version. Getting excited! But I was wondering. Anyone have buyers remorse at this point? Do you like the Mate 8 more or less as time goes on?
No buyer's remorse here.. I'm quite sure if a N/A version is released there will an accompanying rom as well..

Thanks. I'm trying to decide whether to get the Mate 8 (Great specs and build), Blu Pure XL (very good specs, cheap, its been rooted and has TWRP - also some promise for developer support) or stay pat with my Note Edge (I do like the edge features and it's screen is basically as wide as the Mate 8, just not as tall. also Marshmallow arrives in the next few months hopefully). Decisions decisions....

Yeah, it all comes down to how much do you want to spend.. I bought the 128GB version, I had the Mate 7 so I knew what to expect..
If I could only get notifications working properly then I would be 100% happy.

Been there done that, been through every option and nothing helps. Reading around, this seems to be a common bug with emui, and the only way around this is to disable phone manager or make the apps system apps. Which can't be done without root. So, right now I am playing a waiting game.

altaz,
Similar problems have been noted in some of the other threads. Is it possible that the problem you are experiencing isn't due to actual notification issues, but that the apps you are expecting notifications from are not currently being permitted to run in the background when the phone's screen is turned off?
I'm not sure which apps you are having trouble with, but for example, with Whatsapp(?). If this sounds like it might be the issue for you (and you haven't already looked into this), try going into Settings-->Advanced settings-->Battery manager-->Protected apps and allow those apps that should be receiving notifications.
As to the original question of the thread, no remorse. So far so good. A pretty sleek, powerful phone. Just need to get it rooted.
Might be the interactions between marshmelow & emui, if that is the case a fix should only be imenent.
Nevertheless, try this ---> battery manager itself; click on the setting icon up left of the screen, you need to switch on (Keep mobile data on when sleeping).
Of course that is in congunction with the rest of the settings/permissions.
Good luck,
No buyers remorse here. Having recently had a P8Max I knew what to expect with regards to setting up notifications and permissions so they work, and for me currently no particular problems. The camera is not as good as the best of 2015, or even 2014, but I had realistic expectations there and the camera is performing well enough for me in light of the other benefits.

Seems this notification problem is becoming more annoying, i have turned on everything possible (permissions, auto start, notifications, ignore optimizations). I even found another layer of settings in the apps settings that allow a deeper level of changes (settings > Apps > Advanced) . And still i can't get emails to notify when the phone is in standby. This is even after i have left the email application on, and turned the turned the phone off via the power button. i've spent a number of hours sending myself emails in various conditions and while might get the notifications sometimes, others i may not so this doesn't help narrow down the cause.
I have now realized that it's not just emails that are affected, i don't get auto notifications in Google Photos or Rewards, and some apps which run on schedule. The google apps only update when i open the app. which is useless for apps like Rewards, since the surveys expire after 24 hours, so go knows how many i have missed since i moved this this phone. I've never had this type of problem with any other android phone, and i;ve had a fair number of them over the years. At this point, since i am not able to return the phone i am thinking that i might have to do a factory reset, and hope for the best.

altaz, no need mine works now. just follow my previous post in this thread.
Just got mine today. No remorse here, and hey there might be a rom to flash once the US variant comes out. I love this phone.
I'll have buyers remorse if one of these other A72 devices gets the same battery life and camera for <$400
I love it coming from note 5. No regrets. Glad i didnt wait for mobile congress as i was very dissapointed with both lg and samsung. Love the mate 8
i agree, while LG had some nifty ideas regarding that modularity, all in all im not much impressed with either the G5 or S7 line... happy camper with my mate 8 indeed
This is probably the first phone I ever got that I didn't get buyers remorse hours after buying it. I've come from a S5, S4 and original Note before.
hours after buying? only phone? well that sounds like someone didnt do proper research first

Hello.
I am from germany. My Mate 8 is a chinese one with original B162 Rom. Notifications don`t work for me.
What i did:
data in sleep mode enabled
apps are allowed to stay active at sleep
notification in priority mode
rooted device
made WhatsApp and Android Wear (for my huawei watch) to system apps with Titanium Backup (i bought it before ...)
freeze phone manager
I dont`t get my notifications all the time. Very bad are notifications for my huawei watch. My phone rings (WhatsApp), but my watch doenst. Then i start the Android Wear app and the notifications are pushed to my watch.
The phone is ok. I am coming from Samsung S6 Edge+. But the notifications MUST come always.
What else can i try?
(sorry for my bad english)
I had only notification issues with whatsapp - however the situation has improved greatly after I installed the app Push Notification fixer ( no root version)
Now I'd say missed notifications is very very much lessen, probably around 10+ % only
All my other apps eg Maildroid ( only mail app I used), Friendcaster, some newsfeed app, XDA etc no notification problems at all
Mine is China set on B156 firmware ( non rooted)

Background Services being killed in EMUI 5.0

I know this is a common problem, but there are so many discussions about different bugs and builds and so much misinformation, i had to start a new discussion. I'm using EMUI 5.0 Android 7.0 b389.
EMUI kills power consuming background apps by default after about 10 minutes. Doesnt matter if the screen is locked or not.
The setting 'Close excessively power-intensive apps' does nothing, it makes absolutely no difference. 'Power-intensive app history' and 'History of closed apps' are empty. But when I use the tool 'Battery -> Optimize' it still shows: 'x power consuming background apps closed', and the services gets killed. I suspect EMUI performs this optimization by default from time to time.
Could somebody with a similar behaviour try the Optimze feature and see, if you can replicate the results? I've tried every possible setting and by now I'm pretty sure, this is a bug.
Second question: Who solved a similar problem by rooting the device and either:
a) Putting the service (for me it is Whatsapp) in the system app folder
b) Disabling the Phone Manager. Here im wondering, if there are negative consequences doing this. Like settings disappearing (e.g in the Battery menu) or faulty RAM management or whatever.
Nobody has Problems with notifications or background processes anymore on EMUI 5.0? A response if everything works fine, like Whatsapp notifications, would be great too. Maybe I have a faulty device.

It's turned off, but the app is killed even when the screen stays on, so thats not the problem. Whatsapp is installed fresh. I even did a factory reset and just installed Whatsapp, but the problem remains.
Would you mind trying something for me, to go under:
settings -> battery -> optimize
And see if it says something like "1 power consuming background app closed.
If it doesnt say that, then you should see a green checkmark.
Also is your whatsapp power consumption high? Mine is at 28 mAh right now for the last hour, and EMUI seems to decide, thats too much.

Thanks for trying that. That means, your phone has also recognized these background apps as power-consuming. But the difference ist, thats what happens to my phone every 10 minutes. Maybe my device is faulty for real.
Ive tried every possible setting, factory resets and new installations. Ive even disabled Power Genie and Phone Manager over adb. Nothing works. Man, this just sucks.

Go to settings, battery, battery optimization and ensure your concerned app is showing you "don't optimize".
Try this and lemme know
I did that already. I searched and saw that that was supposed to be the solution.....but not working for me
In the same settings there is an advanced optimise (top right ... Button)

this device faces network drops, often not recognized if an app wouldn't show an alert like FB messenger.
these drops are mostly responsible for missed pus messages because the device is not ready at the moment the push happens and it will not be repeated every few seconds (delay)
even worse if one is using several devices, of which one is i.e. at home and the other on the road. while a the working device will receive the push notification the OP6 would not ( you can check for network drops where it shows the IP number, it happens on wifi as well as data and both wifi frequencies BTW.)
so in the last case the message will never arrive because it's delivered, (to the working device at home) and hence no more push attempt will happen until next message arrives.
i and others posted this in OP support, as mentioned above, open you network settings and watch the IP number, it will disappar and re-appear.
also you can use FB messenger where you will frequently see an orange bar saying "connectin" intermittently with a green bar saying "connected"
of course i dunno if that happens on EVERY device but at least it happens on MANY including mine.
since i'm always having 2 phones on man i'm receiving all mails and messages on at least on of the two which also illustrates quite well how often a push will reach one of my various other devices but miss the OP6.
Go to OP support and report the issue if you face it, that way they get aware of the full scale of the issue.
Yep, notifications are patchy for me. Sometimes they arrive on time, other times they arrive but silently without triggering the alert sound. Other times they only arrive after waking the phone up.
And yes, I've set to not optimise these apps and turned off advanced optimisation. It's a bug I reckon, hopefully fixed in 5.1.6
Well, somehow it's working...for now. I did a few things. I updated the Groupme app. I think I changed the notifications from urgent to high. Something worked

Yeah I've mine set to urgent also, but no real difference. Simple things at this stage for a company like Oneplus, that should not be an issue
I've been having the same issue. Some apps work fine and some don't give me notifications until I actually open the app and refresh it. One is Power Facebook and the other is my visual voicemail app. It's highly annoying as I use the phone for business too. Disabling then in battery optimizations does nothing.
If you have advanced optimization turned on in Battery settings, it will prevent a lot of apps that need to do things in the background from working. It will definitely affect push notifications. I have it on but I've exempted a bunch of apps I want running.
Oops, n/m, see this was discussed already.
I'm not sure if it was switching the notification from urgent to high that did it but it was the last thing I did before it started working....it did go back to urgent by itself afterwards though...notifications still working now
..guys any other facing this issue? Even after update to pie stable recently.. I get this problem, notifications arrive to every other device except op6. When i unlock the phone only then notification arrives...all battery optimizations are off..
any solutions?
I got the same issue with Threema. None of the mentioned settings worked for me.
Any ideas?
Same problem for me. Super annoying. Is this an oxygen os or android problem? Would installing a custom ROM help?
It's the DOZE feature in android that is causing the delay in receiving notifications. Setting an app to "Don't Optimize" does not help; this used to work on nougat when I was using HTC U11 but this does not work in Oneplus 6 PIE.
Run the command below in ADB to completely disable DOZE.
adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable
The down side is that it will reset to "enable" after reboot so you will need to run the command, again, after rebooting. To get around this, I use Automagic to execute command "dumpsys deviceidle disable" after reboot. You can use Tasker for this, too.
After disabling DOZE, push notifications are received almost immediately. I often see notification for the same message on both my PC and phone.

Notifications issue?

Hi there
I have a question for the international users of the Magic 2. I have not yet owned a Honor device but had several Huawei Mate devices in the past. The ones which I had from China always had the issue with delayed/not syncing notifications, for example Whatsapp etc. It only got better with the international firmware on it.
Does the Magic 2 also have this issue, seeing it only comes with Chinese Firmware?
Thanks very much!
I have the HM2 and I haven't experienced any issues with notifications, using Whatsapp, Telegram or whatever.

I have had a different experience unfortunately. Some apps only seem to sync and receive new notifications when I open them.
I've tried adding the problematic apps to "unrestricted data access" (despite it saying this should not effect notifications) to no avail.
Hope someone else has a solution!

That's exactly what I was afraid of, I also know this from my previous Huawei Mates.. well I have placed the order now already for it.. so I guess I will have to see.
Go to settings->apps->apps->WhatsApp(for example)->power usage details->app launch.
Change to manual and enable all. I think you can then switch it back to automatic.

These problems usually originate with power consumption settings and launch settings, if you let it run in the background and launch itself, it should work perfectly.
In any way I use Whatsapp regularly and it seems working fine with the default settings I had when installed.

And this
Most people that are having issues with notifications are totally unaware of the the aggressive battery saver on Huawei devices. You need to manually allow apps to run in the background and not be killed by the battery saver. Unfortunately the settings are but hidden and some time there are more than one option to were to do so.

Go to settings->apps->apps->WhatsApp(for example)->power usage details->app launch.
Change to manual and enable all. I think you can then switch it back to automatic.

Do notifications work with screen off or not?

Hi all. In this Video the reviewer states that he isn't getting any notifications with the screen off. Also it is a problem for one of our members. Is anyone else having these hassles? Do you get incoming text, email AUDIO notifications without waking the phone?
Hi
I have no issue with notification at all..
Even when screen is off ..
U do have to active notification from each app setting and alow all permissins...
Also keep in maind to keep app running remove battery restriction from app setting also..
All will work normal
Working for me but I did need to grant WhatsApp and Trurcaller lots of permissions.
I even got True Edge installed for a visual way to get notified and that works brilliantly with the device asleep with screen off.
I was a bit surprised at the extra level of permissions needed. It's all gravy now, but I could see why a reviewer or somebody unaware would get caught out
But yes, I am getting notifications with the screen off in sound and visually, without having to wake the phone.
Indeed at first I wasn't getting any notifications but then I discovered you need to go into the app info and give permission for notifications and turn off battery saver.. now it works perfect and only for the apps I want
The video the OP posted is exactly whats happening to me. I have all the settings as described. Battery saver turned off and even when into each apps settings and allowed ALL permissions just to see if it would work. As the video says, notifications come, but you have to wake the device to see them, there is no sound or anything on screen until the device is woke. Exactly as the video describes. I do hope its fixed soon, I am back to using my Note 5 whilst my beautiful 10 Ultra sits in its box.

Have you undone your earlier modifications to the phone (copying files from phone to phone etc)?
You have two problems and the one to ignore for now is louder notifications. It's notifications at all.
It isn't something to fix from Xiaomi's view and it is always worth learning the software. I don't like it myself... It can be cloying etc.
But the default behaviour is to opt in to notifications. It's working as intended. That said look where we are, it's just your problems are a special case. No biggie, let's fix this!
You have an outstanding issue clouding this where you are trying to use unexplained files on the device (like seriously what format are they? Does it work in Music or anything? Have you tried removing them?)
Took a while but I get all my notifications now when screen is off, see 2vattached screen shots
Thanks all for answering my question! I think this is my last question before buying from Liaow.com, if the syncing isn't a constant problem. Does anyone have a major syncing problem as explained in this review? Once or twice a day I can deal with. I check the calendar throughout the day like most people. However if I get busy and forget, missing calendar events/alarms wouldn't work for me. I'd be forced to use my work iPhone<shudder> for calendar events lol.

How did you get the icons to show on the lock screen?
Mine doesn't. Quite annoying.
Also sometimes the lockscreen doesn't show me notifications even tho they are there.. :s
I have no issues with icons displaying while locked. You do need to enable them and ensure they start automatically and power control is turned off for the app. It has been much easier in the EU ROM for some reason.
Solution!
Here is the thing that helped me with the same notification issue! Just google "xiaomi mi 10 ultra notifications" and in the top 5 links you'll probably find an article from: theunpopulartraveller. It explains the settings, and they need to be accessed by pressing and holding the app icon ^ app info.
Don't give up, try and you'll get the sounds from needed apps back. And ye, actually now I find the way Xiaomi did it much more convenient: I just turned on notifications for 2 apps, and all the rest are silent, while previously I had to turn off all the rest of the apps (much more than 2, definitely) not to get disturbed by all the bull****.
EU Rom doesn't have the "importance" option at 30/31
Well after trying to update to 12.1.1 and seeing what a buggy heap of junk it was, I factory reset, installed 12.0.15, and formatted data. But now notifications don't work when the screen is off whatsoever, absolutely no notifications. Beautiful. I'm so sick of the software issues with this phone, I'm definitely never buying another Xiaomi phone at this point.

Disable adaptive notifications from setting. I dont know what google thinking when creating such feature.
it basically interrupt the whole notification process. Using so called Ai to decide, when to give you notifications or when not to. But most of the time it pick wrong decision and delay our notification altogether.
This is android feature since Q thus also causing problem on Pixel phone. On xiaomi seems like it suddenly got worse on Android 11

How did u manage to roll back to 12.0.15?
Get over to the EU ROM version. Lock screen notifications work fine.
Have you checked each notification that it has no battery optimisation set, also, check in notifications that each one has access to the lock screen. Since A11, notifications have been a pain but for some reason they do work much better on the EU ROM.

There are issues for Gpay and some banking / local safetynet apps for EU ROM which i do not wish to live with.
Somehow the props file in the eu rom causes those issues.
i am probably going to rollback to 12.0.15... now is the excruciating 160 hours wait for unlock.
You obviously don't follow the EU forums. GPay works, safeynet works and my UK bank works. But you also get everything plus more than the Chinese stock and all updates are based on both weekly and stable stock ROMs respectively.

i don't follow it to the tee, but i've seen some reports of some users not able to use gpay out of the stable roms.
