Cannot play audio over USB with the Mate 8? Is it possible? - Mate 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there, hopefully someone can offer some insight here. I just recently got a Mate 8 and something that I did frequently with the Note 4 I had before was play audio in the car via the usb connection to my stereo. I am not able to do this with the Mate 8.
It ACTS like it's playing audio, but there's just no sound coming from the stereo or from the phones speakers. I can still change songs and play/pause it via the car stereo controls, however, which is also weird. In the developer usb options it's listed as "Audio Source", and trying to choose a mode for file transfer from the notification just causes USB to disconnect and reconnect and go back to not having anything selected. It didnt work on unrooted, unmodified, stock firmware (chinese B156), and it still doesnt work after I fully wiped all data and flashed a custom rom (KangVIP Slim).
Any ideas? Has anyone else successfully played audio over usb with their mate 8? Thanks guys.

I own a Kenwood Excelon DPX791BH. It has two modes, one which plays local files using its android app and displays the song info on the unit and one which just plays back any audio from the phone at all, both do the exact same thing (act like they're playing, and respond to controls from the unit.) Interestingly, in the file playback mode the current time indicator on the head unit seems to run through the file at double speed. It happens with any audio, notifications or Spotify or local files, etc.

Have you tried with USB debug ON or OFF?

Yeah, I've tried both, it doesn't change anything. It still acts the same way.

Where are stored your audio files? Internal memory or microSD?

the main thing i use it for is just the routing audio mode, which is independent of the location of the files. It basically functions like how a pair of headphones would if you connected it to the headphone jack and plays any audio that is produced by the phone. I've tried playing audio from the SD card and internal storage, however.

Have you tried the Mate 8 USB connection mode as MTP?

yeah, as I said in the initial post selecting either of the two USB connection options from the notification, MTP or PTP, causes the device to quickly disconnect and reconnect with neither selected.

Maybe there is an incompatibility with Android 6.
If you can you could try to connect another Android 6 smartphone.

That's what I was thinking is possible, but I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem. Has anyone used USB audio on the huawei mate 8 or any other android 6 phone? The only other phone I have is my old note 4 and that doesn't have android 6 on it.

The compatibility problem might reside in your car stereo, you might find other users of your same unit to contact on a Kenwood car stereo dedicated forum.

If anyone else can confirm audio out via USB is possible on the mate 8, then that would be the next step, as the head unit has worked with other phones in the past, and still works with my note 4. Right now asking here seems like the best idea. Hopefully someone can confirm or deny usb audio out is a possibility with the mate 8

But with which car stereo or device?

Under developer options there's a setting to enable USB audio source. The toggle is under network then select USB configuration. Not sure if this will help but worth a shot

No, sadly. Nobody has responded and it still doesn't work. Nobody has said they have been able to do it, either.

It seems to be Android 6.0 ive seen threads about the same issue with other phones that worked just fine before marshmallow.

[Q] USB Headset speaker volume control

Hi there.
I wanted to try connecting my Razer Kraken 7.1 headset to my shield via USB OTG, and to my surprise, it worked. When changing volume though, it only seems to have 2 modes: no sound at all, or louder than my desktop speakers can possibly go. I was wondering whether it would be possible for me to change my volume somehow, so that i can actually wear my headset while playing music through it. Is there some kind of solution for this?
Thanks a lot!

Short answer, you probably can't right now.. Seems like a Android limitation.
So I've been looking around and I found a thread here for the Nexus 7 (2012) trying to sort out this exact issue. Nexus 7 USB Audio Support
(and a little more)
Basically jacknorris created some custom kernels that support USB audio out for the Nexus 7, and a mod that allows for volume control.
He also made a Flashable Zip that adds just the feature you're looking for, but it's of course for the Nexus 7. Flashing it would probably mess things up, like no audio.
You could try messaging him and asking nicely if he would help you compile a fix for the Shield, he seems to have an idea of what to do with the N7, and the Shield is pretty darn stock. It's a possibility you could supply him with the files he needs to mod and then you could test them for him.
jacknorris
It looks like that thread is still active though, so you could try asking there first.
It's either this, or go and file a bug report from the shield.
Even though it's really something that Google should fix.
Settings > About Shield > Send Feedback to NVIDIA
I just sent feedback under Software Enhancement for this bug. :good:

Hi I had mic issue with the same device. I had to restart it totally. So not just put it in sleep when engine is off but with res button holding it for couple of minutes until it totally restarts. You can connect to OBDII however not with torque app but with dashcommand. that also not alway wants to connect. if it happens go in settings app force close, and start app again. hope i could offer some help

Fortunately, that is not the issue I'm having with the audio. The mic in fact works just fine -- The people I call confirm they can hear me just fine, I just can't hear them. I'll try dashcommand.

In my case, i have an amplifier
I rewired, my cables, I cut the cables of my head unit harness So, you have to connect the fronts cables to the rears,so the whites go on the greens, and the grays on the purple (respect the polarity) and job done.

HTC U11 Bluetooth Audio Quality Issue on Android 8.0

Hi, last week I installed the OTA Android 8.0 update on my HTC U11.
Since this update the audio quality when streaming to my car's audio system or to my pioneer hi-fi system at home is a lot worse than on Android Nougat. Especially on tracks with a lot of high tunes. There's always a slight 'clink' noise. I don't know how to explain this in English..
Have you noticed this issue as well? Is there something I can do about it? Thanks

Same for me. Since this update, the quality of phone call when connected to Bluetooth to my car is really bad. No problem with music stream connected to the same car.
I tried managing the new bluetooth options in developper mode menu but it doesn't solve the problem.
The codec used is all the time SBC even is I change it to AAC or aptX or AptxHD.

I have the same issue, it seems it was fixed in 42 version for US market(at least for LDAC)
I have 2 issues with Bluetooth connections with the car. The first is that it picks up interference from the noise of the wheels and engine while driving, and the sound quality suffers and it sounds unclear, unless I mute the vehicle.
The second is that it has a lot of trouble connecting to the car at times. Or, more often, it would not connect the media through the car. Don't know what's up with that.
I know how you feel
I've got exact same problem like yours. Although I'm using HTC u11 plus. My new pair of Bluetooth headphones have the same not OK audio quality. You're right especially the high tunes. I'm desperate, trying to reset everything, but doesn't help. If you find the solution, please let me know. Thank you.

Same issue here. I have the U11 as well and just updated to Oreo and I have the same issue as well. Music over BT was ok on Nougat but after the update, music sounds as if there is digital clipping. And it's there with both my headset and car audio system.
Got the same issue, hope they fix it soon. The only solution seems to do a RUU right now.
Btw. I am on a custom rom (LeeDroid), gonna go full stock and try again.
I would suggest looking in developer options and trying some of the different options for bluetooth in there!
Settings > about > software information > more > then tap the build number till it says you are a developer.
Then
Go to developer options and check under networking, there are some settings to toggle in there.
You may find something you are looking for! I personally haven't tried bt since the update so I don't know if it is a common issue. Good luck!
Thank you!
Thank you very much.
Playing around with the bluetooth options in the developer's menu solved this issue.
The audio quality through bluetooth is now pretty much the same as it was with the previous android os

Hey there!
Same problem for me since updating my U11 to Oreo - very poor bluetooth audio quality...
I tried using different bluetooth settings under the developer options but the thing is: no matter what I choose, it keeps switching back to the default values not affecting anything at all.
If it switch back to default SBC it means your headset/BT device doesn't support other codec.

That's not necessarily true. On 7.1 both Bluetooth devices which I use can support either AAC, SBC and aptX. My understanding is this issue occured because of the removal of AVRCP 1.3. I think Google added 1.3 back to Android 8.q because of this.

Yours is not necessarily true either. I'm on 8.0 and I can still use aptX if I want but only if my BT device supports aptX.

I'm not arguing that aptX and other codecs aren't working on 8.0. What I'm saying is that with certain devices, we are no longer seem to be able to use certain codecs that we could use prior. It's obviously device dependent, but to say their isn't a problem and blame it on the Bluetooth device is incorrect. Infact the same problem has occurred on non HTC devices when they've upgraded to 8.0 such as the OnePlus.

Fair enough, I didn't understand.
Does anyone know how to make the bluetooth options under developer options stick? I'm on stock unlocked Oreo, and they go back to defaults as soon as I change them. I've tried changing them whilst connected in the car, but no change. The only thing that could make a difference is that I'm running Pitch Black Substratum theme. Anyone else got them to stick?
In my Audi a3 2015 before oreo i can able to skip the track with entertainment commad and in the display i saw name of the track. After update i have lost all funtionality and the car see my device only like esternal suorce . Can i do something?

Pixel 3 a Q Beta 5 Android Auto Volume Low

Anyone have issues with low volume with android auto. My 3 XL works fine, proper volume etc....But with my 3a whenever I try and play music the volume is very low. I have to turn the head unit volume all the way up to even hear it.
I tried a different cable, resetting car and phone. etc
If yours is good are you on Pie?
Thanks
Direct connection or via Bluetooth?
If Bluetooth, there is a setting in the developer settings called "Disable absolute volume". Click that and it may fix your Bluetooth volume issues.

Reported. Still an issue on DP6.
Edit: please star it if you experience the issue as well.
I have a Pixel 2 XL and have the exact same issue. Started having the issues in DP5 and it's continuing into DP6. I also just got my phone replaced yesterday by Google for a screen burn, so the first thing I did was update to Q and check to see if it was maybe the old phone, but nope, even with a straight from factory phone with new install of Q it's no different. Starred your post in issuetracker
Found a Reddit article with a work around for this issue. It worked for me so maybe it will work for you! In developer settings change the below Bluetooth setting to 1.6 and reboot phone and try again.

Odd a Bluetooth setting fixes USB audio routing. Audio through BT is fine in the car, only when routing through USB it is low. Will try next time I drive my in-law's car.

I agree it is odd. However after thinking about it a little when using android auto it requires your phone to be connected via bluetooth at the same time. Even if you un-pair your phone and turn off your bluetooth android auto turns bluetooth back on and pairs your phone to your car.(Atleast with mine that is)
But I have been having success since Friday now after making that change so hopefully it helps you out as well!
I saw the suggestion of that during DP5 and tried that and there was very little difference for me switching to 1.6

Question Strange Bluetooth issue

I use a bovee Bluetooth dongle to listen to music while I drive. When I'm playing music it's like someone hits mute for a split second and this happens every 10 seconds or so. I first noticed this behavior on my last phone (OnePlus 8pro) but only on custom roms. I'm 100% stock on the pixel 7. Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks.
Sounds like a bad Bluetooth connection. Connected to my Nvidia Shield my Bluetooth headphones do that sometimes. I just forget the pairing and restart both, re-pair, and it usually works.
Have you reset your radio/bluetooth yet?
My wife had a similar issue, not quite as bad as yours, but frustrating, which got better, after a BT reset, but not 100%.
When she moved to a new phone recently, I suggested I install apps/accounts, and let her fresh configure it from there, so basically almost a full-reset. That solved the whole issue, to date (going on 2+ months now). I suspect there were a few "iffy" apps along the way too, so who knows what all got fixed, through that process...

So I have the same problem on a 2015 Toyota Highlander. On the Highlander, there is a phone connection function for Bluetooth and a video/ audio player. Only connection with Bluetooth. If I select both, it plays normally. I might have to do with your device not connecting using full Bluetooth functionality.
