Live TV thread, please contribute. - Nexus Player General

Hi All.
I made a thread on the nvidia shield android TV forum for people to contribute their findings on live TV channels, etc.
not sure how this would work, but if you have any apps or streams you'd like to contribute, it would be great for the community.
please go here.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv/general/watching-live-tv-t3324016
Thanks

Will keep an eye on it. I've tried Cumulus TV but it had issues. Talked to the dev and said he updated it recently (on his github, not the play store) but haven't tried it again. Need to.
Would love to find a current list of streams to use with it.

Just picked up a NPlayer recently so I'm kind of still tinkering. First time I've heard of this app. I guess, like you said, without a repo of "streams" the app would be pretty much useless?

Installed Kodi and then the Kodimaster Repo which results in thousands of live TV channels, to fills all your needs, FULL Content. If you've already installed a bad repo, like me, just clean it out first by going to Kodi settings for the clean up tools. A good youtube video for installing KodiMaster is this one: watch?v=9t504EGs2jc
Does anyone know how to add chrome bookmarks shortcut to NexusPlayer home page, or even Kodi home page? I tried a sideload app & right click and long click with keyboard and mouse, but no dice. Please!!!

Sorry cant help you with the Chrome bookmark. From my understanding, there is no "Chrome support" for Nexus Player. I use ES File Explorer's "built in" web browser when I need to go on the web.
I'll take a look at your KodiMaster, which will require a full wipe of Kodi (again), I've been playing around with some Kodi repos lately and just can't seem to find any that "work" so, what's one more wipe, right? LoL

Fusion repo was a joke, but only because it's setup wizard doesn't fully install apps, leaves that to you. Kodimaster delivers..
On the bookmarks issue, sideload app called "My Bookmarks (Free)", I need to try again with physical keyboard and mouse.
Just strange how these SmartTV boxes never seem to complete.

Cumulus TV works nice and it's great on the NP because it integrates with Android's Live Channels App, although it's not as simple/straightforward. I went to the github page and found out you can load your own m3u8 from a file manager and it will load the channels just fine as with any other IPTV software.

Running kodi with beast installed... Comes with lives TV addons but ipstalker is the best has HBO Showtime ect but you gotta pay for it...40 a hr..

I'd really like to get Cumulus TV working for USA, but without any JSON US files for me to copy/paste into G-Drive, it's pretty much useless. I really don't have the time to run a "stream sniffer" program to get the URL and etc..etc..etc...
I was hoping there would be a repository of JSON US TV channels that would make it easier, but, unfortunately, I can't find any.

Long clicking on any of the live channels will get you an "add to bookmarks" feature, but it looks to me like the live links may change frequently (some links don't last).

[Q] megavideo?

I just got my gtab yesterday. Changed some stuff today. rooted, installed tnt lite, titanium backup, dolphin browser. Yet I cannot get any web-based tv to work. I like to watch stuff on megavideo or wisevid, but neither one wants to work. I get about a half second of sound on megavideo before it totally boots me from the browser.
I get "Data connectivity problem: The connection to the server was unsuccessful." just trying to load the megavideo page, not even the video yet.
I hit "Okay" and the page still displays. I press the play button and half a second of sound later... I'm booted.
What can I do?
Thanks!

Using a browser. am off to try the lite version of that app, but the main reason I use browser is there are more accessible shows on the internet than most apps will have. I like british tv and lots of odd sci-fi type stuff.
okay, just tried the tv app and got booted back to the app every time I tried to view an episode. I'm guessing it's something to do with my flash version. How do I find out what I have vs what I need? I could not find the link in the app forum. please help.
have you tried this application? it's still a beta, but it should be working fine, NO FLASH REQUIRED!

[Q] Few Questions Before I Buy...

I am looking at getting this as a replacement for my old laptop. However, I need to make sure it is capable of doing certain things that I do regularly.
1. I log into my server at home via my wifi connection to copy files from one directory to another (from downloads to tv shows for example).
2. I launch torrent files (legit ones like Pioneer One) for my server to download. at them moment, i click on a torrent file from isohunt or demonoid which sends it to my ubuntu server running transmission to download (fully automatic).
3. I keep checking out webpages like streetfire.net and todaysbigthing.com. Will the videos on these sites play?
4. Google Calendar is a key app I use. How is this with the transformer using the web rather than an app (if available)? I know Google Docs is a no go at the moment (hopefully fixing in 3.1?)
These are the main things (i guess i dont need a lot of power!) i do daily. Will the Transformer cope?

I'll let someone else tackle the rest, but this is one I do regularly. I use Transdroid, a free (but please donate!) Transmission remote to start and monitor torrents on my home server. I have a port open on my firewall for management so I can get the status of my torrents on my phone (nexus one) or Transformer via a desktop widget.
I also have Mediatomb running on the server to share out media from the directory that Transmission downloads to via DLNA. Unfortunately the Transformer has a lot of limitations on video it will play with the built-in DLNA client. When I get off my ass, I'll take advantage of the transcoder support in Mediatomb to automatically convert video files as they arrive in the folder.
Thats fairly key for me. Do you have to download the torrent to the TF first, or can you click the link in browser or firefox for it to automatically do its stuff? Thats how i do it at the moment with a firefox plugin.
1. Phone My PC app is all you'd ever need. Works very well.
4. Loads of apps for this, or yeah if you just want to use the built in honeycomb one or just the browser version they all work nicely. With HC 3.1 the customisable widget should be handy too.

ES File manager can shift files between shared folders, but one of the many different remote desktop solutions is probably easier
2. I launch torrent files (legit ones like Pioneer One) for my server to download. at them moment, i click on a torrent file from isohunt or demonoid which sends it to my ubuntu server running transmission to download (fully automatic).
Transdroid will send the torrent to your server without an issue. you download the .torrent file, and open it in Transdroid. Very easy
3. I keep checking out webpages like streetfire.net and todaysbigthing.com. Will the videos on these sites play?
Can't get either of these sites to play videos

Can someone tell me if the site http://www.bestofyoutube.com/ works on the TF?

Kindle Cloud Reader

I believe I've done my due diligence in trying to find this by searching. My goal is to eliminate as many textbooks as possible from my backpack, but there seem to be a number of arbitrary walls in ebooks. CourseSmart and Kindle both carry the book I need. CouseSmart doesn't allow offline reading, which I need, and Kindle doesn't sell that particular book to anything but their cloud and a kindle.
So I try to open up the kindle cloud reader and their website only supports firefox 6+, chrome 11+, safari 5+ or Safari ipad ios 4+.
Thus my question is, is there a way to get any of these browsers to play nice with my xoom in such a way to make amazon show me some love?Either that or a way to circumvent CourseSmart's offline issue, but SourseSmart texts are more expensive, at least for my accounting books this semester.
32GB wifi only running 3.2.1
Links not allowed for a noob like me or I'd save you a trip to google with a link or two. If there's a thread on this feel free to throw rocks and sticks at me, as long as I can get the link as well.
Why don't you just download the Kindle app?

The book I need is specifically blocked from being purchased on the xoom with the kindle app.
Ah, I see. So you can read it from the Kindle Cloud Reader and not the Xoom? Very strange. What about on a smartphone?
I hate when publishers come up with these arbitrary rules.
Well, you're going to have to download a ton of browsers to the Xoom and see if one of them will let you load the cloud reader in desktop mode.
Feel your pain.

Tried smartphone, it still tells me my browser is not supported.
I would imagine if I can get an accepted browser to run, then cloud reader would think I am on a PC or rather that it doesn't care. I kind of gave up on this thread after a day of no responses, I'm currently using google to see if I can make linux run on the xoom which would then let me install firefox or chrome.
Have you tried changing the user agent that the browser uses?
In honeycomb, you will need to browse to about:debug to enable the advanced settings and then change the user agent string in the advanced settings.
In ICS you can try the "Request Desktop Site" option from the menu.

That did it. I had tried this on firefox and dolphin but those didn't work. Not sure if I was doing it properly. I had read on the forums that dolphin was a better browser before I even got the xoom so I didn't use the default browser. It let me try as an ipad and a desktop using the wizard walk through, but didn't work. The website specifically mentioned chrome and firefox do I downloaded both of those with no success, but now I think they might work if I use debug. I can read my books now so I'll goof around more with other browsers on study breaks once school gets started.
Huge thanks. Between this semester and next fall this xoom might pay for itself in reduced textbook costs.

Thanks for taking a look around, but those are different authors. Finding free textbooks in current use would be a neat trick though.
I thought you were wondering about the subject matter. The only way to make sure you have the right book, normally, is the ISBN because all the books at this level seem to have the same name.
The book is 9780078136627
Occasionally you can look it up by authors, name, and edition, but my google always gets clogged up with other books of the same edition or other books by the same author(s).

Apps other than Entertainment on the Nexus Player

As the title states, do you guys think it is wise to develop an application for the Nexus Player if Google isn't going to allow apps other than games and entertainment (no truth behind the statement, just looking at the play store as it stands)? I have a couple of apps that I have been currently working on and I believe they would work well with the player in the home. Just a thought, have any insightful ideas of what you may want the Player to do?

Great thing about android compared to most other systems, you can basically do what you want. I definitely see a lot of useful non-entertainment apps on a system such as this. The Xbox-Playstation interfaces give some good ideas about integrating social media into the living-room, but well beyond that as well. Cooking apps, Do-it-yourself apps, Kahn acadamy, World Science U, etc, etc. The system is ripe for growth in the app department.

I'd assume they'll expand the leanback interface as time moves on. But, again, a great strength of android on the tv is you don't have to stick to what Google gives you. I have no doubt other launchers will be adapted or created in short order, from Nova, etc. It'll be interesting to see how Google handles the visibility of alternative launchers considering how tight they've integrated search in the existing leanback and, I assume, want to preserve that built-in advantage. Unlike other systems like the Roku, AppleTV or even FireTV, however, being based on android means the end user will always have other relatively easily installed choices.

Yea I figure they are going to keep this environment very closed and tight knit for some time. I read somewhere, where they are individually reviewing each app as it has to meet a certain criteria. This is good for a couple of reasons, I hated how Google TV apps work so poorly or never worked at all. Also, this will allow the users to add an app to their "custom" environment like a nova launcher. Only time will tell. Enjoyed this convo, look forward to hanging out with this community.

You can find the latest apk's for most of the more well known publishers from apkmirror.com. For Hulu in particular:

There are other apk downloading services you can find through google for a wider variety of apks as well.
Good luck.

To be honest, I feel like if its done right, the possibility is honestly there.
I think if you're using it primarily as an entertainment device, you might not want business apps or document apps on there; for example, I don't mind that anyone in the house can pick up the remote and watch Netflix or listen to my Google Play Music, but it's probably for the best there's not a Facebook or Gmail app on it.
However, if you intended to use it just as a mini PC, you'd want those.

[UPDATE] Kugou Music Translation - Netease alternative

[UPDATE MARCH 2015]
So after another 3 month without Netease, there's some news.
Kugo and Kuwo really anoyed my, because of their bad streaming/downloading speed, as well because of the bad translation (which of course, I'm responsible for).
But guys, don't despair! There's a great alternative, available right here on xda
"Huawei Music Player" / "EMUI Music Player" is a great chinese service, even though fully in english! It allows you to stream songs for free and download them to MP3 (192kb/s).
If you manage to get a working Huawei ID, you can also use 320kb/s download as well as personal playlists and radios. Wasn't able to do that, since, quote: "This service is not available in your region".
So to get it, just google search "huawei music player apk" and take the xda result (still can't post links, sorry).
Have fun and happy easter
OLD THREAD
Code:
So, I finally got a working alternative for Netease CloudMusic: Kugou Music
It is NOT blocked at this time (15/12/2015) and the translation should work.
Translated APK will come soon, but I have some problems compiling, so you need to use the Xposed Module AndroTraductor and download the archive I created (h t t p://www8.zippyshare.com/v/lUZCXxXv/file.html) [Sorry, can't link websites right now, just delete spaces to http].
Also make sure to download the official app from the Playstore (search for "Kugou" and install the first result)
Extract the dv_translate directory to the root of your SD card and restart.
I DIDN'T test it for too long, so please comment your result :)
Keep in mind, that the translation is very bad, but I'll improve it in the future!
Hi guys, this is my first thread and english isn't my native language, so sorry. I hope this is the right section for that topic.
I guess there are a lot of people who are as sad as me about Netease blocking of foreign listerners.
At first, only the translated app was blocked by using an MD5 sum check, a pretty pitiful act in my opinion.
But now, they block EVERY CONNECTION from outside China mainland, which results in most of Western pop songs unplayable (they will be greyed out and a ">_<"-message pops up). So I was looking for some alternatives.
UPDATE: So after some more testing, I settled on translating the Kugou Music Player, since it serves the user better download performance. I'll update the thread eventually.
The user [user=4738691]@bloodvayne[/user] brought my attention the the Spotify Mega Mod, which you can find on onhax.com. It gives you unlimited songs without ads, but some users (Android 6) experience lots of crashes. Even while it doesn't allow you to download MP3, it obviously is HIGHLY ILLEGAL and I advice you to *NOT* use it.
Well, the most legal way would be using [B]Spotify or getting the 3 free premium months of Apple Music[/B] (the app just got released for android).
But I even if you pay for their Premium plan, you will notice that you don't get the same functionality. Primarily, the download as MP3 function will be missed.
So I searched and found some alternatives, which give you allmost the same functionality as Neteasy CloudMusic and, who would have thought, all 3 of them are based in China as well.
So first, we have [B]QQMusic[/B], which isn't really that new and if you are able to create an account, you will get the best streaming quality and speed. But that's also a downside. As I said, you WILL HAVE TO create an account with QQ International to use it, and for me in particular, it didn't work. If you want to try it, ( h t t p://reg.imqq.com/) here you go and please leave a comment on wether it worked or not.
So, if you got an account, you just search the PlayStore for QQMusic and install the first app that pops up (yes it's chinese). It will prompt you to login and then you should be able to use it. I DIDN'T TEST IT, because of the reasons above.
The next app in the list is [B]Kugou[/B] (or 酷狗音乐播放器), which is basicaly the same as Netease CloudMusic. You CAN open an account to get download HQ, but it is NOT NECESSARY. The app's got a big music library, chinese and western. I personaly get very poor streaming speed, but a friend of mine said, for him it's faster than Netease was.
it saves your MP3 files in /sdcard/kgmusic and is [B]available in PlayStore[/B] ("Kugou").
As my testing shows, it appears to be [B]the best alternative[/B].
The last one I got is [B]Kuwo MusicBox[/B], which is actually the same as Kugou with a little prettier interface. I also have mixed feelings about the streaming speed, so please comment your results. It downloads the MP3s to /sdcard/KuwoMusic .
I am actually trying to translate the whole thing to english, but it's a hard task, since strings.xml got over 1200 lines.
Sad to see Netease Music go down for non-Chinese. Right now I use a modded Spotify version for mobile streaming: to maintain being "logged in" I use a VPN. It gets the job done, the only drawback being unable to download music to my library. Might try some of the apps you mentioned.

Yeah, I sideloaded the APK and it seems fine; after all, the target market is where the Play Store isn't allowed so I assume I'll be notified of updates anyway. As well as providing translated APKs will you be uploading the arrays.xml and strings.xml to use with the Xposed module AndroTraductor? That way, if the strings don't change too much between versions we can use newer versions updates without having to compile or wait for a new APK.

Yeah, I'll do that, still working on the arrays.xml. strings.xml is more or less translated, but very poorly. I'll improve it in the future.
AndroTraductor is a nice way, but it isn't compatible with Android 6 and causes bootloop for me.
That's odd, I don't know about Kugou but AndroTraductor works fine for me with Netease and QQ Music on my Nexus 5, stock 6.0.1.

Okay it works now, maybe it was just the custom rom.
Updated the thread, feel free to test my dv_translate archive
I think I managed to install the beta version of Kugou instead of the stable one. It's now v7.9.10. The layout is affected a little by the English text. It looks like it says
"Ring Tones/
ringtones"
instead of just "Ringtones". And it says "Core Dog Music" instead of Kugou Music in some places. But it's a good start!

No one can really beat NetEase. Kugou has missing pieces tho, and Kuwo, I cant download songs...
I think Kuwo is different from kugou. It has a larger database and doesn't block some songs. For example, one band that has most of these chinese apps is the japanese band "abingdon boys school". They work only on Kuwo, so a translation of Kuwo would be aweome!
I know japanese so navigating the app isn't hard, but i do have some question. How do I stop it downloading songs automatically? and how do I choose the quality when playing the songs?
thanks

For extracting the apk, you'd have to decompile it. You can do this with an installed android SDK, or better, with one of the available online services (just google search for "apk decompiler online".
How ever, there's a much better alternative now. I am using the official "Huawei Music Player" for about a month now, and it really works great. It's allready in english and supports MP3 DOWNLOAD (however, only 192kb/s). Couldn't get HQ download(320kb/s) or personal playlists ect. to work, since you need an account for it, and Huawei doesn't allow to register outside of China.
You can get it by just google searching "huawei music player apk" (take the xda result), it's not only a great app and music player, but also has great streaming and downloading speed
Thanks for the reply sir and will surely try this app you have suggested
