I am looking at getting this as a replacement for my old laptop. However, I need to make sure it is capable of doing certain things that I do regularly.
1. I log into my server at home via my wifi connection to copy files from one directory to another (from downloads to tv shows for example).
2. I launch torrent files (legit ones like Pioneer One) for my server to download. at them moment, i click on a torrent file from isohunt or demonoid which sends it to my ubuntu server running transmission to download (fully automatic).
3. I keep checking out webpages like streetfire.net and todaysbigthing.com. Will the videos on these sites play?
4. Google Calendar is a key app I use. How is this with the transformer using the web rather than an app (if available)? I know Google Docs is a no go at the moment (hopefully fixing in 3.1?)
These are the main things (i guess i dont need a lot of power!) i do daily. Will the Transformer cope?

I'll let someone else tackle the rest, but this is one I do regularly. I use Transdroid, a free (but please donate!) Transmission remote to start and monitor torrents on my home server. I have a port open on my firewall for management so I can get the status of my torrents on my phone (nexus one) or Transformer via a desktop widget.
I also have Mediatomb running on the server to share out media from the directory that Transmission downloads to via DLNA. Unfortunately the Transformer has a lot of limitations on video it will play with the built-in DLNA client. When I get off my ass, I'll take advantage of the transcoder support in Mediatomb to automatically convert video files as they arrive in the folder.
Thats fairly key for me. Do you have to download the torrent to the TF first, or can you click the link in browser or firefox for it to automatically do its stuff? Thats how i do it at the moment with a firefox plugin.
1. Phone My PC app is all you'd ever need. Works very well.
4. Loads of apps for this, or yeah if you just want to use the built in honeycomb one or just the browser version they all work nicely. With HC 3.1 the customisable widget should be handy too.

ES File manager can shift files between shared folders, but one of the many different remote desktop solutions is probably easier

Transdroid will send the torrent to your server without an issue. you download the .torrent file, and open it in Transdroid. Very easy

Can't get either of these sites to play videos

Can someone tell me if the site http://www.bestofyoutube.com/ works on the TF?
For Number 3, I tried streetfire.net and todaysbigthing.com. They both work great in the stock browser with Flash 10.3. Streetfire takes some time to load though.
Bestofyoutube also works on the TF.

I was wondering what you guys use to upload your photos/files to a PC/internet without connecting the cable everytime? Built in Android has support for Flickr and Picasa. But I've also seen a DropBox app.
What do you guys use?
there is an app in the market (a free one) to transfer files to pc via wifi, i forget the name tho, search for upload in the market and it should come up.
dropbox is good for uploading to the net although i just do it through Opera browser (free in market) the only browser that seems to allow uploading to the internet.
Hope this helps
I'm giving PicPush a try. It seems perfect for what I'm looking for. If it works as advertised, I'll drop the $3 or whatever on it.

There are some free FTP apps I use sometimes when I am at work and don't have my USB cable. Your phone becomes an FTP server and you can connect to it via WiFi using any ftp client software.
I use SwiFTP, it's nice and simple, but there are others out there as well. You can get SwiFTP in the market or go to swiftp.org I believe.
Hey guys,
I'm considering getting a transformer and I'm really interested in the remote desktop feature of the myCloud app that is included. It isn't specified, but I kind of get the impression that you can only access computers on the same network. Is this true? If it is, it kind of makes the feature a little bit useless.. If I'm on the same network, I'm obviously close to the computer so I could just walk over there and use the computer rather than trying to control it through my tablet. If I could use it anywhere though - at university, for example - this could be very useful. Have any of you guys tried this out yet?
It's also too bad that it doesn't work with linux.. but oh well. I can always use ssh for that, I guess. Sometimes having an actual GUI is kind of nice though.
Thanks,
Sam
Do I need to install any software on the remote machine for this to work?
Or it works just like the mstsc.exe program in window?
Thanks.
I haven't used it since I don't have a transformer(yet anyway), but I believe that there is some software you need to install on the pc first. The myCloud app should come pre-installed on the transformer though.
It's Splashtop, which IMO is the best (local?) remote desktop software. It's very fast, like very very fast, and it transmits sound. I use it on my iPhone to listen to driver radios during NASCAR races. If you want something that works no matter where you are, buy LogMeIn.

Because they got a license with Splashtop. Splashtop costs money normally, but they are including it free.
Who knows, or cares why. It's an awesome piece of software.

From the demo video, it is very fast. Unfortunately, I don't think I can use it to connect to my work PC.
What I usually do with my Windows 7 laptop
1. VPN to my company network
2. Remote desktop to my work PC using mstsc.exe
3. Do my work from there.
Is there a way to do this using a Honeycomb tablet without having to install any third party software on my work PC?
Thanks.
No, not with the app ASUS includes. You have to install the splashtop software and you have to be on a local network.

Well there are remote apps in the android market place - I don't know what mstsc is, but some of them work with the standard windows 7 remote desktop protocol, ie you don't need to install anything on the pc

Do you remember the name of that app? I hope it works with Win XP also (we still have XP at work).
I will to wait until I get my hands on the Transformer to try this out.
I use RemoteRDP on my Droid Incredible to connect to Windows via Remote Desktop. (RDP = remote desktop protocol) Also, mstsc.exe is the executable in Windows for remote desktop.
RemoteRDP has a free version that only allows you to connect to one computer. I bought the full version to connect to multiple computers. Setup a little port forwarding on your home router, and you're good to go!
..I'm still hoping the mynet software including the Asus splashtop will have some middle-hosting capability similar to gotomypc or logmein.com so it won't be LAN only... but I have no data to base that on, just a hope and guess!

If it was not included just flash the latest firmware on the Asus site.
I didn't think I'd get so much use out of it, since I usually only remote into my home systems when I'm away from home. However, I've actually found myself using it to watch cable in the bedroom when my wife is watching something else on the actual TV. I start Windows Media Center on my desktop that has a tuner, and am simply amazed at how well it performs. Video is as high-quality as if I was watching it on the desktop.
Also, note that Asus has stated that a version will be coming this summer that supports access from remote networks. I doubt that it will perform as well as it does locally, but if they can get even close to the same performance it will be a great solution.
This is another of those little surprises that have me loving the TF so much. Asus has put a lot of work into making a truly useful machine, in my opinion.

Good day fellow androidians!
I have two android devices. An HTC Inspire 4g and a HTC Jetstream tablet. I have an unlimited data plan on the Inspire (I know lucky me ) and I'm currently tethering it to my Jetstream tablet.
What I would like though is to access the files on my Inspire on my tablet and vice versa through smb, ftp, dlan, or something. If it can't be done vice versa that's fine. I just don't want to use something like dropbox or have to pair both devices by bluetooth. I want to be able to access the files seamlessly and wirelessly the way I can access them on a computer with the Samba Filesharing App.
I know there has to be a way to do this, but have looked everywhere and can't seem to find the solution.
[edit]: The HTC Jetstream isn't rooted so that probably cancels out the vice versa part then right? If so, again that's fine.
Check post #3 for the solution.
I did a quick search on the market and found a Wireless File Transfer Pro app. Its free. I tested it out. When you set the app to active it gives you an ip address that you use to connect to the phone or tablet. It gives you an ip address of xxx.xxx.x.xxx:xxxx and you just type that into the browser and it pulls up a file directory where you can access all your files. It had a problem with exiting the app though. The file transfer didn't want to stop. I had to force stop from the settings but that might be a app issue. It seemed simple. Hope that helps.
Never mind. I figured it out lol.
For those who would like to know how to do this here you go:
Requirements
1. Your devices need to have DLNA.
2. You need to download SoftMedia Player from the market
3. You need to be on the same WiFi or tethered together.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.softmedia.cybergarage.trial&hl=en
Once you installed SoftMedia Player on both devices open it up on both and press Menu.
Then tap Preferences.
Tap on Share Contents.
Set Shared Contents Settings and Device Name if you want.
Tap back to go to the main interface of the app.
Tap "choose a media source"
Tap on your source (SoftMedia Server by default or the device name you set).
Tap "browse and play media"
Browse your files, play them and enjoy
Thanks for the quick reply shugga101.
Was writing my post the same time you wrote yours that didn't even get to see it till after lol.
Hope this helps other people.
softmedia player is gone
Hey Mudcat, the link you provided gives a not found, and a search of the play store doesn't return any results for "softmedia player". do you have any other suggestions to replace it?
I know myself i use wifi share. Only need it installed on one device, works through a browser on the other device. Works over wifi (of course) or via android ap. Just for some reason while hosting over androidAP it doesnt list the Ip. But I got that memorized already, plus page is bookmarked. Quick n easy.
I'll have to look into your method. Sounds interesting. Glad you got it sorted and thx for sharing!

All,
Please find the attached Windows RT native binaries for QupZilla 1.4.3. QupZilla is lightweight multiplatform browser using Qt.
http://www.qupzilla.com/
I had to attach this in 2 parts because its quite large (well.. QtWebKit is large I should say). You'll need to remove the trailing ".7z" before extracting -- XDA didn't like files with a .001 extension.
I haven't compiled all the plugins, but the browser itself appears to work great! Enjoy!
Cheers!
EDIT: my bad.. the original attachments didn't have SSL or correct image support.. fixed now. Please re-download.
EDIT2: i've noticed that bookmarks, HTML5 video/audio, and the RSS reader appear to be not working correctly -- I'm investigating why that is. FWIW -- Qupzilla on Windows8 doesn't support HTML5 video/audio out of the box either. Flash simply won't work because the FireFox flash plugin isn't ported to ARM by Adobe.
EDIT3: Bookmarks and RSS reader now working -- please re-download. Still tackling HTML5 video/audio support... its currently a 'broken' feature in my Qt webkit build.
Very cool! Which JS engine is it using? I'm guessing it much be interpreted, unless you managed to get it to JIT to THUMB-2...

Yeah.. interpreted. The engine is the QtScript / JavaScriptCore in Webkit from Qt.
http://qt-project.org/wiki/JavaScript
Would be nice to get it to JIT to THUMB2... but honestly I'm looking to fix all the HTML5 issues and getting a fully functioning replacement for IE. Performance isn't my main concern right now.
Cheers!
update
Bookmarks and RSS reader support is now fixed. I've uploaded new binaries, please re-download Sorry for the problems. I'm still working on HTML5 audio/video support.. fingers crossed I can get it sorted out. Dealing with Qt using Visual Studio is not fun.
update
Just thought I'd update you all to know that I haven't forgotten about getting this working with HTML5... just the opposite actually. I've burned many hours trying to get h264 encoded video to work with QtWebKit. If you troll on google, you can quickly find out that its not as easy as it seems.. and Windows RT just makes matters worse.
Long story short, I have all the bits building correctly but the wmf engine doesn't seem to work correctly on Windows RT. I'm not sure why that is. I've fixed at least 2 bugs that was making the browser crash, but its going to take a serious debugging session to figure out exactly what I need to fix and/or rewrite to get functioning video. I haven't given up though.
In other news, I've added enough features to QtWebkit such that Qupzilla is scoring higher than the built in IE browser in terms of feature set... so once I get HTML5 video working.. it should be a great browser.
I can't get this to work for some reason. I keep getting a WinError.
I removed the trailing .7z and I am opening it with Extractor RT from the Window store. I have downloaded both files.

Did you try extract it with 7-zip for ARM?
Yeah, I just removed the extension, then opened the .001 file as an archive using 7-Zip; it extracted very easily.
I take I need to be jailbroken to install this? Because I tried to install 7zip for arm, but kept getting signature issues, and two unzip apps I tried from the app store weren't able to open it.
Yes, of course. That's the point of the jailbreak (installing apps like this).
Thank you for clearing that up.

Will keep an eye on it. I've tried Cumulus TV but it had issues. Talked to the dev and said he updated it recently (on his github, not the play store) but haven't tried it again. Need to.
Would love to find a current list of streams to use with it.

Sorry cant help you with the Chrome bookmark. From my understanding, there is no "Chrome support" for Nexus Player. I use ES File Explorer's "built in" web browser when I need to go on the web.
I'll take a look at your KodiMaster, which will require a full wipe of Kodi (again), I've been playing around with some Kodi repos lately and just can't seem to find any that "work" so, what's one more wipe, right? LoL

Fusion repo was a joke, but only because it's setup wizard doesn't fully install apps, leaves that to you. Kodimaster delivers..
On the bookmarks issue, sideload app called "My Bookmarks (Free)", I need to try again with physical keyboard and mouse.
Just strange how these SmartTV boxes never seem to complete.
Cumulus TV works nice and it's great on the NP because it integrates with Android's Live Channels App, although it's not as simple/straightforward. I went to the github page and found out you can load your own m3u8 from a file manager and it will load the channels just fine as with any other IPTV software.

I'd really like to get Cumulus TV working for USA, but without any JSON US files for me to copy/paste into G-Drive, it's pretty much useless. I really don't have the time to run a "stream sniffer" program to get the URL and etc..etc..etc...

Long clicking on any of the live channels will get you an "add to bookmarks" feature, but it looks to me like the live links may change frequently (some links don't last).
