No removeable battery and ROM flashing - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Coming from the S5, what are the implications of not being able to remove battery to reboot when phone gets stuck while flashing ROMs etc. What is the solution now with s6/s7?

I'm wondering about this, too. I suppose flashing with the battery almost empty & plugged into a low powered charger while flashing would allow for the battery to fully drain after unplugging it? Every phone I've owned had removable battery, so I don't know what to expect.

Holding the power+volume down simulates a battery pull

Holding down the power button for 10 seconds should shut it off too.

I do NOT suggest this at ALL! A dead battery while firmware up/downgrading can be quite problematic, to say the least.

This generally doesn't work with the newer Samsung devices, like S6/Note 5. But volume down and power button does every time as someone already mentioned.

Volume down+power like others have mentioned. Works every time. I found that at times I had to hold the home button as well.

Not if the phone is already powered up it won't. That's as if it's off when you hit that combination.

When you plug it in, does the charging light come on?
How long have you tried holding the power button for? 10-15 seconds should give you a full reboot...but if nothing happens then it could be frozen, in which case you will have to let it sit until it drains.
no power
yes..when i plug it in the red lite is on...i have held the power button for 10 to 15 seconds and tried power plus volume up..still nothing
I second the "Letting it sit until the battery drains" worked for me once.
how long
thanks for the quick reply..one last ?...how long does it take to drain battery completely?

Depends on how much charge it had to begin with. I would guess about 10-15 hours with full charge. If you get really impatient and dont want to wait, you can take the back cover off and push the reset button.

From 85%, assuming your battery stats are correct then I'm going to say it won't be drained fully until maybe tomorrow evening or night and even then it may still have juice. The problem is we don't know what state it's frozen in. Is it frozen with the processor speed reduced? Is it frozen because there's a rogue app and it's flexing the processor? No idea.
VS REALLY dropped the ball with not having a removable back plate as well as no access to the reset button.
Ah well.
Good Luck.
Try volume down then power button. This worked for me once.
let us know how it goes
You may of already tried this, but....
Did you try holding the power button for 15 - 20 seconds? If so letting it completely drain may be you only option left.
Update you ROM to one of the newer ones. I have read of this happening to others running one of the older ROMs.

HTC Sensation Power Button (On/OFF) doesn't work.

Hi everyone. Today i was chargin my phone at PC using a no-name usb cable. I've noticed while it was charging that the screen kept turning itself on and off. When i finaly took the phone, the screen was unlocked and when I tried to press the home button it did nothing but taking screenshots (like the power button was stuck). The power button was not wroking either.. After I took out the battery and restarted the phone, the power button didn't work at all. Tried to clean it off using this method but it did not work. Tried to clean the power off button using a method i've seen on google (can't post the link since i'm a new user) but its still not working
I'm desperate, please help
Are you sure, that the problem is only the power button? I have sometimes problems with this phone too. Sometimes you can't turn it on.
Try taking the battery out for at least one hour - then try to start it. I had always success with this.
ECAod 4 , 450
The batter has proven me to be fcked in the last week, had lots lots lots of random turn-offs and restarts. But for more than 5 hours the power off button didn't work.
I'll let my batter out through the night.
Thanks for reply.
PS: I'm running ARHD 7.3.

The restarts can also result from a loose battery. Try putting a folded piece of paper between the battery and the upper casing of the phone, so the battery is pushed against the pins. This is a well-known issue. It helped me a lot. Before I had also lots of reboots.
Yep, did that in the last 1,5 year and the random reboots stopped. But as i've said, now it happens even tho' i have a paper that keeps the battery steady.
Lol just took the phone to see if the power button works and currently i'm talking screenshos pressing the home button .

Well, this isn't normal. Is your power button constantly pressed?
Try the following: Hold the volume down-button while inserting your battery until the phone boots up.
Does it boot into the boot manager?
Just woke up, plugged my battery in and the power button worked almost normally. Could've pressed it 5 minutes and after that and a restart it didn't work anymore.
This means I should buy a new battery and everything is fixed? Are the Anker batteries worth it ? Or do you recommend me a HTC EVO 3D battery ?

You can use the battery from the Sensation XE, which has 1.700mAh instead of 1.520 (or 1.560). At the HTC-Store they are about 50 € here in germany.
Always buy original batteries! Not the cheap ones from eBay. They usually don't have a temperature sensor, so the phone can't shut down, when it gets too hot while charging. This can be very dangerous.
I haven't got any experience with Anker-Batteries - sorry.
Pressed the volume down button and it got me into the boot menu (just like the power button is kept pressed).
Do you think that if I change my batter it will fix my problems ? Also noticed that my battery is altered, aka its not flat but swollen.

If it is swollen, it is definitively broken. Mine had the same symptoms...
I'm pretty sure, the powerbutton-problem isn't related. Does the button feel normal, if you push it? Or is there no "click"?
Maybe you can repair it with a needle by lifting the foil a tiny bit.
i dont think you need a new battery, same problem occurred with my phone, done some DIY fix and written that in a post for fellows like you in search of help.

[Q] Stuck in Fastboot with Low Battery with no recovery

Hi everyone!
I'm stuck at fastboot screen with low battery, no recovery and no rom installed because everytime I want to flash a firmware I get some kind of error.
Can anybody help me to charge the phone so I can try flash a recovery? I tried with wall charger but it doesn't work. With usb cable it says it's charging but it still remains with Low Battery.
Please somebody help me
Plug it into the charger
Hold the VOL DOWN key
While still holding the VOL DOWN key, press and hold the POWER key
Hold both keys down for over 120 seconds. This is more than two minutes and will seem like a long time. You might want to time yourself to make sure you hold it longer than two minutes.
After holding the keys down for more than two minutes, release them.
The Fastboot screen will display, and charging should be indicated.
If you have tried the above and it didn't work, try this:
Plug in the phone for 15 minutes.
Proceed to Step 2 above.

Hey I have done this before and just tried it again after the following scenario:
this morning, charged battery with phone off to 100%,,,
powered on, left plugged in charging,,,
did some things on phone,,,
unplugged from charger,,,
did some things ,,,
battery charge was at about 96% started playing hillclimb racing,,,
played maybe 3-10 minutes,,, and during the game it pops up with the dreaded "battery low... shutting down..."
plugged in showed about 5%,,,
did the vol down power ~2 minutes
into fastboot chose recovery, then choose power off
now battery shows 55% right away...
what gives?
I guess holding the buttons clear the battery.bin stats?
.
This is a known bug and should be fixed if you are able to upgrade to 4.4.4, or better yet flash the full 4.4.4 firmware image.

Thanks!
I saw that from your other post right after I posted this and I have read about it several weeks ago,,,
I am currently on 4.4.4 liquid smooth 8-17-2014
and have had 4.4.4 and this issue on most all other ROMs I have been trying out to some degree. and sometimes it seems worse that others...
Was more curious to what gets cleared by holding those buttons..?

Remove charger and let the phone battery die, might take a long time depending on how much it was charged
Try connecting the white MicroUSB > USB adapter that came with the phone to something power hungry to drain it quicker
Power off you device and then wait 10 seconds. After waiting press and hold the Volume Up, Home, and Power buttons at the same time
After the phone vibrates, let go of the Power button, while still holding the other two buttons until Android System Recovery screen appears.
Using the "Volume Down" button, highlight "wipe cache partition" and press the Power button to select it.
After the cache partition is cleared, the Galaxy S7 will reboot automatically. This worked for me ans I hope this will help

Red LED should not show when charger is not connected though
Press power button plus volume up and down hold for 5 to 10 sec it will restart ur phone same thing happen with on s6 but not on s7.
I once had to press vol up and down, power and home (that's all buttons) at the same time for ten seconds for the S7 to reboot as it was stuck and seemingly dead. No led on at the time though. But I have disabled the leds in the settings anyway.
UPDATE!
The battery discharged completely(red led was off),first i tried to put it in download mode and IT WORKED!!! But the phone wouldn't turn on because the battery was 0%.I charged it and now it works fine :| I hope this was something software related and not hardware and i hope this will never happen again.Thx for the help guys!

Same problem
I have the same issue... Tried to charge my phone with 15% battery and after a few hours it was 8%. Tried to reboot, charge with the phone turned off but nothing was happening ( not charging, not booting up. tried buttons combinations as well ). The led is not showing up on mine because i disabled it from the settings so i'm not sure if it's charging or not. Took the phone to an authorized service on friday so next week i'll be getting a response from them. By the way, the phone is only one week old :crying:

My A8 (2018) is not turning on or charging

Last night, I charge my phone because I notice that it was in 8% so plug it in to charge. An hour later, I check the phone if it was fully charge. I use my fingerprint to unlock but it is not recognizing it so I press the button to wake it but it is not waking up. I tried pressing for much longer to see if it wake or turn on but it is not. I tried pressing the Volume Down + Power to see if I can soft reset but that does not work as well. Plug it in the PC to see if it recognize it but it is not. I left it charging the whole night come morning when I woke and tried everything again but still won't turn on.
What could be causing this?
