Sideloading Google Cardboard app on Samsung SGH-T599 works fine - Android General

Just something interesting that I found out. According to Google Play, my phone wasn't supported by this app, but it runs fine. The only issue is this device's junky gyrometer, which doesn't limit the app's functionality. I thought that someone else might find this interesting too.

This whole Market thing is driving me nuts

I'm running the stock "Woot" ROM (which is probably vanilla 3588 with some pre-installed apps, but I can't be certain) and have installed the Market and done the standard "market fix."
I'm able to browse the market, but the website insists I don't have any device. However, the website *does* show things I've installed as "installed." I believe that may be from when I was fiddling with TnT Lite earlier, but can't be sure.
I noticed in a thread about editing build.prop that doing so may break website updating, but I've never had that in the first place. That means that any time I do a market fix or switch ROM's that the Market doesn't know about any previously-purchased apps. I might try risking $1.98 and purchasing something then seeing what happens if I try purchasing it later.
Like others, I'm frustrated by what doesn't appear in the Market that I think should: Firefox and Google Earth in particular.
I think ive found that clicking on a link to an app will open it even if its not found in the search. there was an app i couldnt find earlier but it was there when i clicked a market link to it. installed just fine
If you want Firefox to show up after the market fix is applied you need to edit the build.prop - discussed a bit in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1017368
It also will show up before the market fix is applied. I am also having web market problems - no luck there so far.
Regarding Google Earth... never been able to see it in the market. I went as far as searching for the APK to sideload and it simply wouldn't work. Not sure why - it just froze when opening. I am guessing there is some sort of incompatibility with the gTablet...
I recently put cm7 on my moms gtab, and I found google earth in the market and it runs just fine

I never tried to find Google Earth after editing the build.prop. Just did and it was not only in the market but worked great. Maybe CM7 uses a different build.prop by default than vegan 5.1.1. I must have side loaded an old copy before when it didn't work.

Wrong! Paid applications are tied to your Google Account. As long as you log in to your Google account, all your paid apps are available to you in the Market application. However, if you are using a fingerprint in build.prop that Google does not recognize, your paid Google DRM protected apps will not show up; however I believe all ROM's are using a recognized fingerprint (Nexus 1 on TnT-Lite) so we don't have to worry about that.

Verizon (App Compatibility)

Why does it seem that a ton of apps are not compatible?
I can download all of them for my galaxy nexus but a ton of apps are listed as not-compatible and it won't even let me try to download them from google play.
It's getting pretty annoying.
Anyone else coming to the same conclusions and does anyone have a workaround?

Why not tell us what apps aren't working?
The Dark One
I'm pretty sure the only way certain apps are restricted is based on major android version releases (ie. 2.0, 3.0, 4.0). I could be wrong though...
The nexus had 4.0, and so does the galaxy so I don't see why some would be restricted (based on my original assumption).
Two apps I found that weren't available were google wallet and some app to help transfer music (supposed to be free from samsung). Both apps I found outside the app store but I had to root my phone for google wallet.
Verizon wants you to use Isis not Google Wallet. So why on earth would they allow you to use competitor's software on a device they didn't make?
You're asking for way too much here.

Is it safe to use non compatible applications?

I am using non compatible application in my P-901, like BBM, Microsoft office, Google Launcher, Samsung Milk, Lab values ..etc
I have downloaded them using google , installed them and they are running smoothly. I know they are not compatible with the device and they are not in the play store. My device is not rooted.
Are they harmful to the software/hardware because they are not compatible?
I just want to check that and if they are harmful I will un-install them immediately.
Thanks...

No, that just means they may not run smoothly. You could have issues with the way they display, they might force close, or they may run fine. You never know.
If they are jot compatible how did you download them from Google? Usually they will not download 1f they are not compatible.

Nah, it won't hurt anything. On Android it's called sideloading and people do it on pretty much every device.
There may be some rare exceptions, but basically if it installs and runs from an apk, then you're good to go. It won't damage anything.
A lot of things are labeled "incompatible" on purpose for reasons other than being technically unable to run on the device. (Like for example Google and Samsung want to keep their launcher and Milk music only running on certain devices thar they benefit from so everything else is flagged as incompatible. Also it may be that devs haven't optimized for certain devices and so don't want it running on them and then get low ratings for devices they don't support.

U can make a google search and you will find a lot of downloadable links...
The only ones that are truly incompatable are apps that require specific hardware features that aren't physically present in an incompatible device.
The best place I've found to get apps outside of Google play is Aptoide. Yes, there are plenty of crappy porn apps and repos full of pirated ones , but the default store, and many others have any legitimate free app you could want, in any past or present version you could want. It has adult content filtering turned on by default as well. The Aptoide app also has a play store-like update tab and auto-update feature, too. A recent update made huge improvements to the UI, which closely mimics the style of Google play. Just make sure to skim over feedback to check for issues, and avoid app versions that are higher than they should be.
They're all incompatible for one very simple reason: The developers haven't enabled the QHD resolution in Google play. It's really that simple and that stupid.
I had this same rubbish for almost a year with the TF700T, it was the only and first device with 1920x1200 at that time, and nearly évery app was incompatible.
Sideloading them always worked perfectly well, no issues.

You are right..
For example BBM is working fine in Note Pro and Note 2014 but in a bad resolution.

Oh man, that was just the tip of the iceberg with the TF700T. Mine still fights like a champ, but with the hardware specs it had for the time of its release, it should have gotten much more attention. Development was slow and scarce, and the stock firmware was riddled with issues and bugs. I typically go for whatever device has the best, newest hardware, and it stays seems like the second and third place devices get all the attention and accommodation. Going through it with the galaxy note pro 12.2 as we speak. I'm working on building a working cm 11 ROM for it in my spare time. All its had for weeks is twrp recovery. I just wish I had more time.

Google Play Services Stops Working

Hello Helpful People,
Clearly we are a niche group who love our P8 Max. Wondering, does anyone else have the issue where Google Play Services stops working on their P8 Max? This has happened to me a fair bit and can only be resolved with a hard reset and reinstall. I now have rooted and removed some or most of the the bloatware, hoping this fixes it. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Michael
Hey michaeldanielbourke,
This has happened to me as well. Not sure what the cause is but I've done a few restores due to this issue. One thing I noticed is that when I launch Maps and it asks for my search history...if I say Yes, there is some process that happens that states that Google Play Services is no longer supported on my device.. Subsequent launches of the Play Store causes an open and close and I can't get it to launch. I also noticed that my Google account was automatically removed from Accounts in Settings. So far I've avoided this by not implementing Maps search history, but I'm not really sure what the root cause is.
If anyone has any other feedback please post. There's definitely some quirkyness with this device, but I guess that's expected with an imported device. Overall I'm really happy with it and prefer it over my Note 4. My Note seems like a toy compared to this ...but I keep my Note 4 around because it takes great pictures and video which I do a lot of.

Interesting. Well I rooted my phone (finally) and removed the bloatware and the Huawei account information. So, hopefully this should work. Shall update
Is your phone rooted?
Michael
Yeah I was rooted, but it was happening when I wasn't rooted. Before I rooted I took a nandroid backup, so right now I'm running with TWRP with no root.
12/2/15:
Just wanted to update this thread. I continued to have issues with my Google account. For some reason it would remove itself for no apparent reason, other than a conflict (I think) with the Huawei ID or Cloud ID that is built-into the phone. I seemed to have solved this by removing or freezing all of the installed Huawei services and apps (with root). I'm curious if other folks have had this issue as well.
With root and all of the Huawei apps frozen, the phone is really running well. The only downside for me is the camera image quality. It's not bad, but I'm kinda picky about family photos I take.
I still can't get over how my Note 4 looks like a toy compared to this phone. I hope Huawei continues to crank our larger format phones. 6.8" may seem big to many folks, but I think it works well.

Google's ARcore not working on my OnePlus 6

I downloaded ARcore from google playstore today along with some sample apps using ARcore but each one just keeps searching for planes. I have never seen a single blue dot or anything resembling the fact that it is actually working. The apps load, they just don't see any surface.
Does anyone experience this?
I'm running latest update (ONEPLUS A6003_22_180614) and I have been unable to find ANY INFO on this issue.
Please, if you have any information or similar experience help me out here cause I'm really lost.
Thanks in advance.
How did you download it from Google store if its not officially supported?
I tried installing it today but all apps using ARcore crash for some reason.
Glad u posted this as I'm not able to start threads yet.
I too can't seem to find compatible software to use this.
I side loaded it a couple days ago. The link is in the article in news feed
As soon as I seen the information about google's Measure app came out, I went and installed ARCore and Measure, and it worked perfectly. So maybe there are a lot of apps that don't work with this phone yet?
As a note: I'm on the latest update (5.1.8) with root. Didn't modify the camera app.
There has to be a compatible gcam built for oneplus 6 to use arcore and stickers. What did you think you were just going to use it with the stock oneplus cam? LMFAO!!
Measure does work with the stock cam
Well then how does it work? I have no idea how to use it or what it requires and I've seen people using it on OP6 be it sideloaded before it was suppoted or from google playstore (It is on playstore, I can download it no problem it is supported since few days ago it's all over the internet)
Do you need a special hardware cam to connect to it for it to work?
What do you mean gcam built specifically for oneplus 6?
I thought you only need the ARcore app and then one of the apps that take advantage of it like "just a line".
The apps load well but it isn't scanning anything.
Thanks for replies.
EDIT: Guys, it now works, I tried to download aforementioned Google Measure and IT WORKS finally and now all of the other apps work as well. Thank you for replies I would have not been able to resolve this issue without your suggestions. Thank you.
SOLVED
I installed ARCore from APK Mirror. Then 2 days ago when I saw the Measure app was out, I went to install it from the Play Store. It showed as Not compatible. Looked again yesterday and it said it was compatible. Installed it. Runs as a seperate app. No change to my stock camera
What else is working well?
Most apps I saw were buggy for other phones.
Jurassic Park is cool, if u like Dino's walking around your house
I can't seem to get measure to work I've downloaded arcore and Google measure but nothing seems to happen when I open the measure app it keeps telling me just to move my hand back and forth across the scene but there's no measurement, what did you guys do to solve?
For Google measure, I just open the app, aim my camera at what I want to measure, then a dot matrix appears on the area. Drag the length or width icon from the bottom to measure.
Qlone works good of you want to make 3d images of things around your house
Best way to get any of the apps to work is to scan a newspaper which is on a table or your bed if it has a pattern design sheet on top. The apps do not recognise plain surfaces properly.

Which camera? Which mod?
my op6 also had the problem of no automatic surface scanning. I tried installing google measure but it didn't helped. Finally, after rebooting the phone i managed to use it. So try to reboot your device if you have the same problem
After andoid p beta 2 arcore works fine.. was able to download from play store and played around for a while.. seems to be good..
