[Q] How MIUI synchronize my privacy (how can this possible)? - Xiaomi Mi 4i

Hello.
I didn't use MIUI, I don't know, since before of summer 2015. I am on custom roms, because I like them, and don't like MIUI. Most of past time (since summer), I was on Ressurection Remix LP, and didn't even experimentise with other custom roms.
Before couple of days, I soft bricked my phone, and I has to flash fastboot MIUI, and starting again. I didn't go to "flash_all.sh", I goes to " flash_all_except_data_storage.sh", but I think it doesn't matter for my story. After flashing, I booted into MIUI, with one and only intention - to enable USB debuging because rooting, flashing TWRP, and TWRP restore of my previous RR. So I power on my phone, skip every step in setup wizard, didn't sign in to Google acc or MIUI acc, even turned off MI sms. When system was up, my phone was autoconnected on my home wifi network with wpa2 encription, I has installed all mine apps which I used in past time on custom rom, and God know what else.
Note: I bought and install ADSL internet before 3-4 months (before that, I used neighbor's wifi), and last time used MIUI before about 9 months. My home network, modem, SSID and password didn't exist in time I used MIUI. I didn't sign in to any account when I start MIUI before couple of days.
How can this possible?

I think it restores the local backup.
EDIT: Wait. Did you say it restored the apps from "custom ROM"? That's impossibru without signing into google.

Yes, for God's sake, restored apps from custom rom, apps which I newer has installed on MIUI. Without sign in to Google, without sign in to MIUI, i was think to my self: WTF WTF WTF.
I forgot to mention: I offten clean my storage of junk files -- manually, via Root Explorer, folder per folder. I have no MIUI folders on my storage for long time (local backups, etc.).

It is most likely something in the kernel. This is part of the reason no developers will touch their devices and also why they have been banned in a few countries.

Unfortunately, I was also suspect on something of those "spy stories". Unfortunately, it seems they are true. It is a realy good hardware for cheep mpney, but I think never more will buy Xiaomi.

You have to remember that this is completely normal and legal in China where they are allowed to monitor everything people do on the Internet and firewall anything they don't like.

[Q] N7100 Keeps Reinstalling Google Crapware. (Long)

This is gonna be long, so please bear with me.
New Android user here, since December and never looked back.
But I have a big problem that just started two days ago, and coincided with the installation of Vonage for Android.
My N7100 is rooted and I also installed a new kernel (Perseus), but kept the stock ROM for the time being, but I'm getting closer to installing CyanogenMod ROM through ROManager Premium.
I just read the article posted here by Will Verduzco on Android security which led me to a bunch of articles on VOIP and it's scary.
My problem is that my N7100 will kind of do a half-baked reset without my doing anything... and then after watching the download light blinking on my router here in the house, Airport is downloading for about five minutes and then, BANG!!!, up comes the screen asking me for my language, and to set up a Google acct, Samsung acct, and I have to re-enter the passwords for my WiFi, etc, etc... you know the drill.
What's causing this?
I've been on XDA hundreds of times doing research on one thing or another, and I've removed all the Google bloatware possible except for the few things that I want to keep, and I got that comprehensive list from the XDA site... but after my device gets done doing it's thing, everything is back with dozens of notifications... AND Titanium Backup, ROM Manager, Triangle Away, SuperSu, Root Explorer, ES File Explorer/Task manager, etc are all missing and no backups on the SD card. WHAT!!!
One more thing which might be peripheral to my problem.
A couple of days ago I installed the new OS for my Mac... 10.9.
With my prior OS, I uninstalled almost all of anything that said "Google" from my computer but have to go through it again and repeat.
This morning, I do a search for anything Google on my drive, and came up with files with executable update files that all had "Android/GT-N7100 in the path.
Yes, I did connect to Kies by USB just once to check things out there but I don't think that's the underlying problem. Maybe it is.
I've seen some REAL genius help on this site, and hope that somebody that has a grasp on my problem can help.
I joined this site a few minutes ago just to ask this question, by the way.
If I went off track as to the posting guidelines on the site, just tell me.
Hey, I'm pushing 70 and the mind wanders. Haha!
Thanks in advance, guys!

as for your note 2 problem, so your saying you flashed Cyangenmod on it correct? if so did you flash a the current gapps for whatever version you flashed? im thinking that's the problem, otherwise another flash of the cyangenmod ROM might fix it.

No, I haven't flashed CM yet, but as I said, I'm moving in that direction after looking a a bunch of ROMs.
This is gonna sound kind of dumb, but the reason that I'm holding on to the stock rooted ROM is just because of one active screen saver, and that's Windy Weather. Like when it's raining here, you get rain drops sliding down the inside of the glass. HA!
And believe it or not, I agonize over the small stuff... like whether or not I want to go with an AOSP or AOKP ROM.
Believe it or not, when I got done with massaging the stock ROM today, all of the junk that I had formerly removed through Titanium Backup were still gone even though it showed that it was all re-downloaded in the Notifications.
I just have a sneaking hunch that the Vonage VOIP App that I installed had "something" to do with my problem, so I have not reinstalled it, and I also destroyed all of the Play Store links with Titanium Backup and still no problem.
I'm still running the stock 4.1.2 stock ROM.
Even if I do go with CM, I'm a little worried that if I download Gapps, something in there just might want to gain control and zap my device again.
Anywhooo... for the last several hours, I'm not having any problems.
Thanks for your reply.

Advantages of EU/Global over Chinese ROM

tldr:
What are the advantages of installing the EU ROM over just keeping the Chinese ROM and customizing it? Are there any functions that stop working and/or change for the worse?
Hi everyone. Hopefully this post will be a helpful resource if someone else wonders this same question.
For a while I had my eye on the Mi Mix 3 and after reading all the reviews I just had to get it. I wanted one with 8 gigs of ram and 256 gigs of memory so I got the Chinese variant. After reading post after post on how to change the ROM to EU or Global I finally asked why? I mean, I got the phone and promptly loaded the Google Play Store and downloaded a bunch of apps. I changed the launcher to "Poco Launcer" from the GP Store since it's basically the same as MIUI but with an app drawer, so I'm cool with that. That beings said...
What are the advantages and drawbacks of installing the EU ROM (the one I kinda decided on between the two alternates)? The only two things that bother me about the Chinese ROM are
1) The default assistant is in Chinese and you can't change the AI button to open a different one, even though you can still install the others and use them by opening the app.
2) Some of the Apps in the "App vault" (Their little slide right home screen) and the tools when you open the slider are Chinese apps that I have no interest in using, but you can't change them. My solution to this was to turn off the app vault and to make the slider do nothing, which is okay I guess.
So basically, what would I gain by switching ROMs, and what pitfalls exist in those alternate ROMs which might make a person think twice about changing?
Why run MIUI at all?
Don't waste anymore time and just flash it already. it's better and I'm not wasting my time explaining why.

Because MIUI works. In your signature the top one is for the "Pixel Experience" and it's 90 pages of people complaining about features that don't work or are partially broken. The culmination is on the last page where it's revealed that it's not under development anymore followed by people complaining about functions that STILL DON'T WORK.

I don't mean to waste anyones time, and especially not my own. All I need to know is, will any of the features of my phone be problematic after I flash?
Also, does that link you provided require this "twrp" thing I've read about or is it fastboot? Is it the EU version?

It will work fine, it's just a tweaked version of Chinese Dev stock rom with less bloat. Their website explains the features over global
You need twrp to install it
Alright, let's do this!

Actually, #1 is no longer valid. The ai button can be remapped in the chinese ROM if you are ROOTED because I have done it, so, if you are ROOTED, scoot on over to:

Everything works on the Chinese devices, other than being able to link an action to the slider. Most of the problems are to do with initial installation, but this is the way every rom thread ends up, people only post when they have problems.

Help - suddenly getting a lot of spam messages

I recently unlocked fastboot and flashed a new rom (arrowOS) on my phone and I am suddenly getting a lot of spam text messages, sometimes up to four messages per day. They all say something similar like "voicemail message received, go to random website to hear it"
Has anyone had similar things happen after unlocking their fastboot or flashing a new rom?
Can anyone recommend how to stop the spam messages?
I would truly appreciate the help!

For real? If so... :'(
The thing is, I didn't start having this issue until I unlocked and flashed.
Flash another custom ROM. (Maybe your phone is infected by malware when plugged into your PC. This is due to your PC being infected. Use another PC to download and move the ROM to the phone, like the public ones in a public library. Also reinstall windows on your computer.)
If the problem persists, take your SIM card out and see if the issue fixed. If removing the sim card fixed it tell your mobile data provider that your phone number is hacked and request a new number and SIM card.

It came from somewhere. Could be a completely external cause like someone selling your email address*.
Many times the user provides their email address voluntarily. I just let Gmail's spam filter do it's thing... I don't care. I never open it or download and it dies on mass delete... I rather enjoy that.
I don't have issues with unwanted phone calls or texts... I'm rather aggressive and creative with them. I break telemarketers for fun
Custom roms are an invitation for trouble of all kinds. The smaller their distribution, the less users to find potential issues and fixs.
Bottom line, if it seems like a bad idea, it probably is
*or phone number
It might be the OP downloading some drivers, ROMs etc, when trying to flash the ROM, from a malicious site, which downloaded malware into the computer and infected the phone instantly when he plugged the phone into his computer.
(In fact I fried my PC by downloading malware to my pc and tomorrow bump the motherboard is fried. Be careful when downloading.)

Well it might be a coincidence but MIUI crap is also the heaven of bugs, lags, ads, and trackers. They indeed have a large distribution, but the computer class of Xiaomi developers are surely teached by their PE teachers. Xiaomi firmware updates are also prone to bricking devices.

Yeah, I'll try flashing a different one next. It's a shame because ArrowOS is one of the more popular ROMs for poco and I was hoping that it would have good support/maintenance/security.
Something else it could be is just that my phone number got leaked somehow, which is not necessarily related to the new ROM.

Try blocking the numbers. Many times they are spoofed. Try getting contact info on them.
Block unknown numbers.
Get on the national do not call list.
Contact your carrier and see if they can help. Some are quit aggressive with this.
I've had the same number for close to 20 years. I slice and dice unwanted callers with pleasure.
Great for taking out pent-up aggression... you can say whatever you want although I avoid death threats. There are more effective methods Cursing like a Marine is perfectly acceptable... but only if you mean it.
Texters are bots and ******* though.
Best to ignore and directly delete the message without opening. Never open attachments of any kind... ever. Or click on links... ever.
Disable multimedia in texting if possible.
Check your download folder regularly, look for odd behavior and unknown downloads; delete any found without opening.
Odd behavior indicates you may have downloaded malware like a scripted jpeg. Never let one of these get in your database

I'm running ArrowOS and have none of these problems. In the whole ArrowOS thread, you will not find a problem like yours.
Meaning the ROM is perfectly fine and the problem is on your end and completely independent from the ROM

Question Full backup possible?

Greetings!
Just picked up a Pixel 6a, coming from an LG-V30. Have been out of the custom ROM game since switching from a Nexus5 to the LG which had minimal custom ROM options (stock was really quite good).
With the Nexus5 I was used to doing full backups (boot/system/data) with TWRP so I could try out a new ROM and reverting to my original ROM (completely set up with all my apps and data) with very little effort or down time.
I've spent some time reading the forum and it doesn't look like TWRP is really a thing for the Pixel 6a and I've found very little info about making a similar "full" backup.
Does such an option exist?
I'd like to test drive LineageOS (and maybe one or two others, I was a huge fan of CyanogenMod in the past), but having spent the last several days getting things "just right" in my stock/rooted setup I'm not thrilled at the idea of doing it again just to try something that might not work out.
Not really looking for "Google Backup" style options, I would like a solution I can do 100% local to try something out and then easily and quickly revert if needed.
Thanks!
TWRP style full backup isnt possible anymore, but you can use Swift backup to do a TiBu style app backup. Between Swift and Google a clean flash isnt horrible, but yeah.....I definitely also miss the full backup option.
Hi!
You can try this one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/tool-root-adb-partition-backup-restore-tool-for-windows.4512231/
I could backup my Pixel 6a completely.
Sorry, but there is no such option. I have P6 and also miss TWRP or Clockwork kind of recovery solution. There is nothing similar (as far as I know) like what we had on previous phones... Now I use Swift backup for apps backup, but that's not what you looking for.
Thanks for the replies, even if they aren't what I was hoping for...
I have switched to Swift as well, too many issues with TiBU restoring data and ending up with force close problems.
Jan61 - Looks interesting, but I'm not sure it's ready for general use.
Typical Google, one step forward but two steps back for users who want to do more than just buy a phone.
Oh well, guess I will live with stock for a while and let Lineage get more stable (maybe even official).

As far as I know no, unfortunately.
"swift" is closed source software being distributed by somebody you can't hold accountable for any kind of security problems in the software. It has the capability of connecting to the internet even if you deny network permission (on an android distribution that has such option, obviously). I would HIGHLY recommend that you avoid this software.
Better backup software is *NEO Backup* (available on F-Droid), which is open source and quite auditable.

You mean like a Microsoft system
or an apple system
Both are closed source
I don't vouch for swift backup, I tried it and most of my restored apps crashed repeatedly / didn't backup correctly. I am still looking for a good backup android solution that works similar to windows system image backups.
I've used it since day one
I've never had a problem with it
I've been using a Google phone since day one
The only backup problem I ever had was tibu
That was the biggest piece of **** there was

Curious, does that include being blocked by a a rooted system level firewall (AFWall+/iptables)?
I've never trusted Google's "toggles" to turn things off properly.
And FWIW - You (as an individual user) are as likely to hold crApple/Micro$oft accountable as you would the author of Swift for any data theft.
EDIT - That said, I will give NEO a look, options are always good to have available.
NEO requires root
Maybe this helps someone.
I do full backup with:
- Plug phone into PC and copy each folder down. Sometimes you have to go one-by-one, or a few folders at once, or Windows just freezes up. Once all copied, great.
- Use Super Backup app from Play Store to make a backup of everything. Calendar, Call Logs, Contacts, etc.
Once all done:
Use the phone's built-in migration solution IF same brand; IF not, use Google app to transfer/migrate. This will copy most of your app settings and whatnot to your new device. (I skip pictures, etc.) To copy over pictures, I just use Windows and the previously made backup to copy over the DCIM folder for example.
And that's it, works flawless for me.

I do something similar for migration, but I'm not looking for a one time migration. I want to be able to bounce around on a couple custom ROMs for a day or two and then settle on the one I like. Used to be easy with TWRP backup to image the entire phone in a single step, not so much any more.

Root can bypass *everything*. No exception. That includes either switching to a different user to work around firewall rules, or even adjusting the rules to suit. Selinux? "setenforce 0".
As far as holding the fruit company or vaxx pushers accountable, keep in mind that its not just YOU needing to hold them accountable, but EVERYBODY ELSE harmed by their software. So yes, it will come to something VERY substantial.

If it's more than just individuals (ie. class action lawsuit), the only ones who get anything "substantial" are the lawyers.

If it's more than just individuals (ie. class action lawsuit), the only ones who get anything "substantial" are the lawyers.

You assume that the objective is to get a payday, when the objective is actually to punish them for bad behavior.

How to know if Android phone was flashed?

After paying to have my phone flashed (Honor 20e), how do I know if the person really did the agreed job or simply did a hard reset?
Flashed with what? Why?
With stock ROM, to eliminate spyware.
by risking more spyware ignoring that stock always has spyware?
my guy, flash it your self with an aftermarket OS like GrapheneOS, /e/OS or OmniROM.
you don't avoid espionage by walzing into the spymaster's den!
Ok… factory resetting would also remove bad software…

LMAO no, Android (from google or honor or any other phone maker) comes with "bad software", a factory reset won't do anything!
again, get /e/OS or grapheneOS or OmniROM for your phone and flash it your self! get rid of anything that comes from Honor/Google like GMSCore that can be replaced by MicroGapps
though I very much congratulate you on wanting to escape the goolag! now get to hacking!
I think he was referring to bad software that he installed and wanted to clean wipe his phone.... I don't think he was trying to degoogle...
If you were, Lineage OS or /e/OS with microG and Aurora let's you get apps without Google services
@burbank_ what do you mean by bad software?
Yep, I meant spyware that the perpetrator installed on my phone, allowing them to monitor my activity, listen to my calls, and possibly even control my phone.
So yes, I want to clean wipe, and I don't think I can be sure to have removed the spyware with just a hard reset..?
There's no way I know of to check, but a factory reset would remove all the apps from the user partitions (including the spyware).
I looked for stock firmware for the 20e everywhere and found nothing (except a sketchy download link that downloaded some random firmware for the Honor 8X) so your person probably cheated you (unless he works for huawei/honor and has access to some files that the Internet does not).
A factory and cache reset from Android Recovery (press Power + Volume Up and select factory reset, cache reset, reboot in order) would remove spyware for the most part.....
Ok, thank you (and qwerty too)!
I'll probably install a custom ROM myself then, just to be sure. Can you recommend what to install, I'm interested in something with all the Android functionality I've gotten used to...?
It's a huawei... You can't unlock the bootloader

maybe only through the phone, I did a quick search and allegedly huawei maybe would allow you to unlock it, but as I suspected there is always a BROM exploit to be had: https://www.xda-developers.com/huawei-honor-bootloader-unlock-potatonv/
though the link is a bit dated, I do believe potatonv should support the Kirin 710F SoC
also, if you want to remove spyware, you remove anything that contains data collection I.E. google services and whatever the CCP mandates their OEMs install
Thnx, I'll look into it. What about other custom ROMs you've mentioned, though, would there be difficulties in flashing it with one of them?
Also, I've another question. I contacted another mobile repair service and they've told me they have special access to stock ROMs through "programmers they hire", so they can install a stock ROM for my Honor 20e. Is this possible/ unlikely/ trying to cheat me?
well I don't know about the other ROMs, ever since AOSP introduced Projet Trebble the promise was of Generic System Images, but they don't exactly exist because just like with UEFI, the OEMs implementation is broken so you still have to look for an aftermarket OS that is speciffically tailored for your device
that repair shop are likely trying to scam the heck out of you or actully know what they are doing and have a fresh image they pulled from a brand new phone and that "programmers they hire" thing that sets off alarms in my head is likely just them explaining it as simple as possible

Yes, it seems there is a way to find out about the last flashing date - provided it was followed by a Google account initialization:
Go to the Google Dashboard, login with your Google account.
Scroll to the section labeled "Android" and expand it (by clicking its title / the LGM [little green man])
Check for the device in question
Associated, you will find a date of registry. That doesn't reflect the first time a device was added, but the last time the Google account was activated on the device. So if you activate your Google account following a Factory-reset, this field is updated and thus reflects this point-in-time.
Additionally, if phone's Android is rooted, you always can check a directory's creation time below /data/data.
