Hey I want to root my Nexus 5 without unlocking the bootloader since that would wipe all the data and I just had my phone setup. Is there a way?

try kingroot or another multi platform rooter there are a few.

Just one question, is that the only reason why you don't want to unlock the bootloader ?
It doesn't take that much time, and I never had any problems on my Nexus 5 after full wiping
Use towelroot and aftet rooting go to play store and install Bootunlocker for nexus devices. This don' t wipe your data.
And later you can use Flashify to flash twrp recovery, if you want.
I don't think towel root will work on mm ROMs.

I don't want to unlock bootloader because that would wipe that data and all the apps and it is tiring job to install every single app again and then even transfer all the music and data back to my phone .

I don't think any apk files will root MM. There may be a method via ADB but I've never seen or tried a method to push root to a phone.
Between all the new security updates and the new SELinux policies in MM, I have a hard time believing any apk magic will work.
You can root without unlocking your bootloader, through ADB and with a lot of patience, but to do that you must be running a userdebug build, and nope, stock ROMs are not userdebug builds.
If you're worried about losing your app data, you don't have to be. So long as an app is installed from the Play Store and you have automatic backup enabled, it'll be back right after a reformat. Just make sure to sync everything, just in case.
As for your data, you'll have to pull it out and copy it back after formatting.
Sorry to break it to you, but I know no other way.

just use the one click root tool by kennethpenn, work perfectly thanks. use titanium back to do a backup of all the app and system then took out all the att bloatware. i have few questions at this point.
1.
will i be able to get OTA updates from att? what will happen to all the bloatware that i deleted? would they appear again?
2.
what happens if i do a factory reset on the phone? would i brick the phone? under normal condition that will erase all apps i installed and return it to factory setting, that means all the att bloatware will be back? will i lost root?
3.
what other things i can do after i root the phone at this point?

I'm not 100% sure on this, but as long as you're running an actual AT&T ROM (not an Asian or Rogers ROM), you'll be notified of the OTA's. Now, if you're not using the stock Recovery image (that is, if you've installed CWM Recovery), you won't be able to apply the update. OTA updates get applied via the stock Recovery image.

If you do a factory reset from CWM or within the phone's UI, you're fine. Root will remain in place, and you won't brick it. It just clears the user data from the phone, and should leave "sdcard" intact. However, I'm not 100% sure what happens if you do a factory reset from the bootloader. So just don't do it that way, unless someone else can confirm that it's okay.
3.
what other things i can do after i root the phone at this point?
You ca use apps like AutoKiller to change your memory management, for one. That's about all I'm doing with root right now. If we ever get custom kernels, you'll be able to overclock your CPU. If you search the Play Store for "root," you'd doubtlessly find some other root apps that you may be interested in.

Don't ever ever ever install an OTA on any rooted Android device. At the least, it won't work anyway, or you will lose root. At the worst, you will be stuck in a bootloop. Updated ROMs (based on the OTA's, but rooted, and safe to flash) usually get posted in Development soon after the OTA's go out. That is what you want to install.

I can confirm that it's OK. My phone was rooted and stuck in a boot loop. I did a factory reset. It was reset and still rooted after the fact. So you can do it.

Just to clarify, pre-rooted versions of the official ROMs (which often get posted on XDA, as I mentioned) may need unlocked bootloader to install, so this will possibly not be an option for a while. Although there may be alternate safe ways to update (but not OTA). For instance, a leaked 1.83 firmware version is already available as an RUU in the Development subforum. Apparently, its okay to install via RUU, then re-root.
In general, the safe thing to do is to read up on here when updates are released, and see if there is a safe way to update on a rooted phone.
So,.... messing about as we do, trying to get an app to work that wont work on rooted device, I installed voodoo to temporarily hide my root and it seemed to work.
but now I cant regain root access. 1: Not sure if voodoo is the issue
2: tried all fixes that I could find on here and nothing working for me
Not really an issue at the mo and I'm sure theres a work around but as a quick fix / quick question

You can flash everything if you have a Custom recovery Installed eg : CWM or TWRP, Because both has Root enabled by default, even if the Rom doesn't have Root that doesn't mean your recovery doesn't have root, If the rom only doesn't has Root, you Recvoery has.
That means you still can flash everything. (I recommend to use the lastest version if you have a old version)

hey guys i despirately need a solution to my problem

There's an app that won't work for me on a rooted phone so i tried to disable root in SU but it still doesnt work. My question is, if I full unroot from SU, will it delete anything? Can I just reroot - unroot - reroot - etc... from nexus toolkit without having issue?
I also have xposed installed with gravity and gel. if I unroot, will the changes I've made stick without root?
The only time I actually need root is when i make backups from titanium. Dont flash much and I have xposed setup where I like it so going unroot isnt a big deal. I just want to make sure unrooting and rerooting won't effect my phones setup/files.

well full unroot from SU didn't work. it still thinks I'm rooted. any ideas. btw the game is mlb perfect inning. hoping i dont have to install the stock image and keep my setup. no idea what it could be. I also tried rootcloak from xposed and that didnt work.

Hi, I bought a Virgin Mobile LG G Stylo, but I am afraid of these app closes and keyboard crashes it has on 5.1.1. I want to root it so I can still do what I've been doing on my previous phones, like wifi hotspots, cpu clocking, bloatware removal, etc., but I can only root 5.1.1. Basically, if I do the update, I cannot root, but if I don't update and just root, I cannot update to remove the bugs. Would anyone know any method to root 6.0, or might I be fine and be able to make 5.1.1 work with some ROM on Virgin? OR, has the Stylo 2 any root method yet? I am stuck with an Optimus Slider until I figure this out

The only 6.0 marshmallow root on the stylo is metropcs/T-mobile. They are able to root because they have unlocked bootloaders. The Virgin Mobile phone can only root on 5.1.1. So, if you want root do not update. I use the VM stylo too, and I'm on marshmallow, and I wish I'd stayed on 5.1.1 w/root. There are no roms for the sprint variants, so all you can do is debloat and tweak, but you'll have that. I'm pretty sure you can alleviate your crashes and app closes by factory resetting from recovery. Just clear it a few times. If you disable too much google garb you get instability. Good Luck

You mean factory reset every time it starts to get bad? I do not want to reset all of the time. Isn't resetting bad if you are rooted? Should I just wait on the Stylo 2? Would there be a way to unlock the bootloader after rooting? If so, maybe removing root and then updating and rooting again?
And what if I installed Katana? I found @GameTheory's website, but it says it is for the Tmobile variants

You don't need to wipe data all the time. Just wipe cache and dalvik cache only every so often. That won't erase your apps.
You can wipe the phone in recovery, it is similar to factory resetting but it must be done in recovery on a rooted phone. Once you do a wipe, you can reinstall your apps. Once you are rooted, you can use Titanium Backup to restore your apps.
Also, once rooted, you can do a complete (Nandroid) backup of your phone so that if you ever need it, you can restore everything back to the phone.

I know nothing about the Stylo 2. to be honest. Not interested either. Such an inferior phone and it sucks that Boost and LG are putting out a phone that has limited specs. Same thing they did with the original Stylo for Boost.

Hope someone can help me. When I got my Samsung S8+, I quickly installed TWRP and then rooted it with magisk the same day I received it.
After that I removed a LOT of bloatware and installed hundreds of apps and everything was fine for 6 months.
One day it gave me a weird lock error, because I think I accidentally removed the OEM Unlock and the phone went crazy.
I had no phone for a few days but eventually I managed to flash stock rom and phone went back to normal.
I lost root, but I managed to keep all my data.
Now I want to see if I can get root again. However, all the tutorials to get TWRP require that I wipe my phone.
My questions are:
Can I root my phone without wiping all my data? Is there a chance that my bootloader is unlocked already or did flashing stock rom remove that?
If I have to wipe my data, how can I keep all my apps (and the app data). I have Titan Backup but that needs root to work so I don't see how to save the app data?

Inorder to root, you need twrp and in order to get twrp working you need to wipe everything first.
I don't know if there is the possibility to backup app data without root, however i found this articel.
Just because I'm curious, which apps are important for you to have a local backup? I went through all my apps and didn't found a single app which isn't either naturally stored in the cloud (like whatsapp, FB, Snapchat,..) or has the function to export/backup things like tasker. :fingers-crossed:

I have a lot of apps that do not store their data in the cloud but locally in the phone. Without being too specific, some of these are notes, some are social apps (connections with hundreds of different people around the world with conversations, pictures and videos) and some are personal collected data.
I managed to migrate all the data the last 5 years using Titan and I think it's silly after managing to save them suddenly to lose them. On the other hand it kind of looks like there is no other way. Without Titan backup working, I will need to lose everything.
