S7E Camera Thread - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi,
I was very surprised to find not one, but two S7 Edge phones available to play with at my local (albeit the biggest in my country) electronics store.
So I took a couple of store shots with the camera, if anyone is interested. Pictures are attached to this post. To me they look pretty good. Noise is very well controlled. Auto-focus was incredibly fast, I wish my Canon EOS M2 would be as fast as the Samsung.

cant wait to try this onmy family vacation to vegas

Those are some nice pics, wish they where rotated lol.

I'm going to town tomorrow to see if anywhere has one of these out on display. Would like to get a feel of one before mine is delivered next month.

I played with the edge camera at the Best Buy today and was very impressed.

I feel the best thing is that this thing is basically waterproof (30mins up to 5ft) which will result in some amazing underwater pics and videos!!

I have a very strong feeling that the lens is covered with the protective plastic. Its very easy to miss when peeling the phone. The pictures will look much better without it. Otherwise, I'm not really impressed with the pictures.

Probably not plastic that is covering the lens, but just good old regular fingerprints. Had similar issues when playing with the phones in the store, but after a good cleaning the pics were much better.

Why were you lying on the ground when you took them?

I quickly played with it as well at Best Buy, it was insanely fast! Photos looked good from my limited testing as well.

I am starting to believe that samsung made a huge drop back with the camera. It is a little odd all the user uploaded photos to have plastic cover or fingerprints. Do not try to look for excuses. Do you remember the first photos of galaxy s6 . They were all awesome. I have already pre order the galaxy s7 edge but I am thinking very seriously to cancel it. Also do you remember how fast we had camera comparisons with the s6. Now after so many days why we do not have a decent one. I will wait a few days until I see a s6 vs s7 comparison. But I am pretty sure my s6 camera will be superior.

If sammy "downgraded" the camera that would be idiotic step, they optimized it for all situations especially for low light, but that shouldn't make daylight photos worse in fact, due to large pixels it might be slightly better.
Either they have a bug with software or some of the models shipped with problematic sensors, we will find out between 8-14 March.

There are already comparisons between the S6 and S7 on here, and the S7 camera is better, and that is before post release updates which will improve it even further.

Check that thread for a number of comparisons between the S7 and other phones. It's the best of the lot.

heu it's what u see you??? Oo
I, i don't see the same on this pics: teddy bear => s6 wins, blurry face = dont' let s6 focus = normal, faces = better light s6, two ladies =>yellow filter in s7, ...
No really it's THE comparison that prove s6 is better...

If that's what you really believe you clearly have it set in your head despite evidence to the contrary. There might be some situations prior to post-release S7 updates that the S6 takes marginally better photos with both phones in auto mode (bright outdoor scenes for example), but certainly not indoors. However, I have no doubt any issues with auto mode in bright scenes on the S7 will be rectified soon enough.
Stick with the S6 would be my advice.

Plastic cover? What plastic cover? The glass of the S6 was a huge fingerprint magnet too, it's the con of using glass. That's why I went with silver, it's not as noticeable

Some photos I took
Here are some photos I took on my S7 Edge.
The dark bathroom photos = Note 5 (auto)
The lighter bathroom photos = S7 (auto)
The two darker ones are the light from under the door only, brighter ones is just the door cracked
The outside photos are from darkest to lightest (auto, manual 10sec shutter lower ISO, manual 10 sec shutter highest ISO)
Pics of my dog in pretty bad lighting, just a side lamp and some light from the window (auto)
Pics of the figures are in pretty good light (auto)
Since XDA compresses them, look here for the uncompressed versions.

Also, here is a 240fps slowmo I took of the sink - https://goo.gl/photos/8L4ZpJDPCSq2kQKh7
Edit: I'm not sure why xda uploads some sideways. Sorry about that.

Not very good... when you see even the dog pictures: noise everywhere and when we zoom, we don't see clearly the hair in the fur...

Poor Camera Results

My pictures are coming out flat, with very poor contrast and colour rendition. I've owned mainly Samsungs before, and their cameras, even lower in MP, have given excellent results. I was expecting something lot better with a 20MP camera, but the quality I'm getting is comparable to maybe a 5MP camera. I use the Superior Auto mode, with full 20MP resolution.
Anyone else disappointed with the camera as well?
I'm not disappointed with it but seems some people are. Have you looked in the General section? There's a thread for voicing your opinion on the cam: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2887635

I just talked about that few days ago...
I was comparing Note4 and Z3 and Note 4 kicked Z3s ass...
Z3 can take great photos outside when there's a lot of light but in lower light conditions photos are terrible...
You can always switch to manual shooting mode and set few things but you won't get nothing special...
That's the only thing I would like to see improved in next gen Xperia...
I'm absolutely satisfied with everything else..
OK, that and maybe X-pen, Sammy has S-pen so why shouldn't we have X-pen
It's amazing addon for many things (I'm using S-Pen to sign documents in PDF, without needing to print them out) and emailing them after signing...

funky0308 thanks for your feedback. I feel exactly the same.. Z3 is a great device, EXCEPT for the camera. I've used Note, Note2, 3 AND 4, but never found much use for the Spen other than scribbling and drawing etc. in my free time. So I don't miss it at all. A 5.5" screen, however, would help tremendously.

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Huawei Nexus 6P come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
One of the best mobile cameras. Color saturation, ease of focusing, and HDR is all excellent.
Surprisingly very good! The Moto X Pure was good, but this has crisper images. The OnePlus2 was OK, but the images were "smudgy" in the background.
The nexus 6p takes great pictures. I love it and the double power button push to open camera really does work and its quick.
Great so far, nice upgrade from the stock S5 camera. Low light images look better and apps like ProShot giving us manual controls can be quite handy.
The video is very crisp too!
To be honest it's not bad at all. It's up there for sure but for sure not no1. Happy with mine
I guess since I came back to the Nexus line from the S6, I have to say I'm disappointed. My expectations weren't too high though, so I'm not overly disappointed. I got used to, and liked the S6's 16X9 pics. I like how they filled up the S6's display. I'm trying to get used to the N6P's 4X3 pics. I can positively say that low-light pics are nowhere near as good as Google would have one believe they'd be. Period. As long as the lighting is good, the pics will be as well.
Of course, a lesser camera is still worth coming back to the Nexus. So overall I'm happy.
I'm blown away by the quality of the camera!
Coming from an HTC one m8, the photo quality is amazing on the 6P. I'm not used to the amazing quality but I love it!

I would prefer a Lumia, but since there is a lack of apps on Windows Mobile... 6P.
Pictures seem very good., but the white balance when using the flash has a slight green tint compared to the 5X. I noticed this last night and was also mentioned in this article: http://pocketnow.com/2015/10/19/google-nexus-5x-vs-6p-video
"If you’re really looking for a consistent difference here, maybe try to spot the green tint in a few of the 6P’s photos, which for some reason becomes more pronounced when using the flash."
I've attached pictures for comparison. First image is with the 6P and the second is with the 5X. Hopefully this will get fixed in a future software update.
In my testing I am seeing better indoor photos than outdoors in even lighting. Outdoor photos tend to produce darker images against bright backgrounds (sky). If I move the focus to the subject, it compensates the brightness for the subject but then sky is blown out. This is without using HDR+. With HDR+, photos are evenly lit but still on the darker side. Images,. however, are very sharp and capture excellent details. I have a Note 4 too. I would say that Note 4 has a better camera than Nexus 6P. So in my opinion Nexus 6P is good but not excellent.
Coming from a Nexus 6 I'm loving the quality of this camera. However in HDR mode trying to take pictures of my children is pretty difficult. It's quite a bit slower in this mode

I have to agree with you. I had the S6 and I loved the form factor and the camera. I hated the S6 because my wife would always use my phone for photos. She actually used more of my photo storage than I did. I thought the 6p camera was suppose to be on party with the S6 . I have to say some photos of the photos are good but with the S6 I never had a bad photo.
I just hated that the S6 updates would take forever. I know that with Verizon, Marshmallow will not be available until March/April 2016. I went with the 6p cause I could keep Verizon and will always get timely updates. Also I didn't want to have to worry about rooting a phone for it to be functional.

[3/7] Samsung S7E Vs Nexus 6P Camera Samples (Comparison)

Update [3/7] I uploaded day and night samples using manual mode, ISO 100 and let the phone do the rest as requested. The pictures are in my Google Drive link below for everyone to download the full sized images since they get compressed on the forum.
Update [2/29] All pictures taken were either using Auto mode, HDR+ unless otherwise noted. I'm using a Manfrotto tripod from my DSLR for the night photos to keep the photos consistent. I took 5-10 photos for each scene and picked the best one from each phone before posting them here. I will provide a link to the full image located below so they can be viewed without the possibility of being downsized.
I did not edit any of the pictures, and both were taken with a 4:3 12MP setup for maximum resolution. I will add more photos throughout the next couple of days and post my comments as I go.
[2/29]: The 6P clearly is taking significantly better pictures so far. The S7E's photos look washed out despite having a 'better' sensor, so I hope Samsung addresses this issue promptly.
I stopped into my local Bestbuy and had a look at the S7E. I ordered a silver one for reference. I took some pictures side by side with the S7E and my 6P to see how the camera stacks up. I'm honestly surprised because I thought the 6P took better pictures, but this is only one scenario. I'll do a full write up when my S7E comes along with night photos and the works. Have a look at the few samples below and let me know what you think.
Off topic: let's try to keep things relatively on topic, no bashing or dumb arguing please. I am a Nexus fan, but I'm always open to trying new things. With that statement in mind let's have a nice discussion

I wanted to share my impressions of the S7E after using it for a day of pictures. The S7E takes nice pictures when there is ample light, but the post processing usually causes the pictures to seem overexposed. The HDR mode also doesn't seem to make a big difference during normal shooting like it should (aka it doesn't bring out the dark areas/shadows well). I like how fast it focuses despite the often washed out colors it produces. I want to like the camera, but it's hard to really enjoy using it when the pictures are ok not great. The camera is still good by all means, yet it falls short most of the time compared to the 6P. I took a lot of pictures in less than ideal lighting while it was cold out this morning. The S7E should have an advantage because the camera has OIS, but the 6P still consistently produced better pictures. If Samsung doesn't address the short comings of the camera (which they are promoting heavily), then that might be a deal breaker for some people. I will post another update with more pictures after I use it some more later this week.

While both are excellent it appears the Samsung trumps the Nexus 6p which is not surprising. Text in the SAMSUNG pics are clearer with the exception of the first picture where maybe your hand wobbled , than the Nexus. Pictures seem a bit brighter with the Samsung . Either way I wouldn't be unhappy with either one of them as I do own nexus the Nexus and praise its camera. Just an FYI, many have determined if you upload a picture directly into XDA the quality suffers. Far better to use a third party app with a link.

I'll happily link the images via Google drive for everyone to see. My hand was stable while taking the pictures and I took 5-6 of each scene and picked the best for each phone to upload. Personally the Samsung took pictures that were brighter but they look less natural. Look at the text on the Samsung display for example it's more clear and not washed out on the 6P's picture. I think the S7E has a lot of potential and I will gladly take tons of pictures when I get it in the coming weeks. I'll add them drive link to the OP so check back in about 5 min for it.
Edit: it's added to the OP
I like the Nexus 6P pictures. Like the OP said, they look more natural.

The S7E takes HDR+ photos instantly which is nice, but the post processing is a little over the top. I took at least 200 pictures messing around and the 6P ones still look more natural. I'm not saying that's good or bad, but it's am observation. I bought the S7E for the camera and waterproofing as a backup phone. I expected the camera to be a little better, but I'll wait until I have my unit in hand to make a final decision about it.
For what it's worth, I personally think the S7 took better pictures than the 6p - if you look specifically at the shots of the balloons and the one of the store - in both, the 6p is darker - while the S7 looks more natually light - both are excellent but IMHO the S7 looks better.
I have a 6p - and I love it - personally I always thought my Note 5 took better photos - and I was dissapointed that the S7 went down in size from 16mb on the note to 12mb on the S7 - but that pixel thing (double pixels) that samsung added to the S7 may actually make it better. Can't wait to get my hands on it...
Interesting comparison.
Few observations:
- Looks like the white balance/colors look a bit more vibrant on the S7E (but perhaps not as real to life?)
- Maybe this is due to F1.7, but it seems that anything generating light seems to be blown out on the S7E (ie look at the ceiling lights, and lit up signs)
- The S7E pics look a bit blurry/not focus in a lot of the pictures, particularly in the background. Wonder why this is
I love both Nexus and Samsung devices so I find this comparison interesting, thanks OP. It's just odd because when I owned a 6p, I compared it against the S6 Edge and found the latter to take better pics.
Best buys are highly lit. Nothing looks natural there. S7 pic looked much more accurate in my opinion. The balloon pic is no contest.

That's how the S7E would focus. I didn't enable touch to focus for to so I let the phone determine what to focus on and took the pictures. The 'double pixels' only refer to the focusing pixels. The 6P has a laser to assist with focusing, so both do a good job at acquiring a fast target. I noticed the S7E wouldn't focus when I put my finger within a inch or so of the sensor and the same is true of the 6P. I have a DSLR, so I never expect a phone to come close to that quality, depth of field etc.
TL,DR the double pixels are only there to focus and the 6P has bigger individual pixels than the S7. Check the IMX377 zenzor that's in the 6P vs the IMX260

It's possible the f1.7 takes in more light despite its smaller actual pixel size vs the IMX377. A lot of the issues could be post processing which Google doesn't really rely upon as much as other OEMs. The 6P has a great camera and I'm sure the S7E will too when I get it to really see how the performance is. I have no doubt that both phones will perform well, yet I'm left wondering about how the IMX260 will be at night conapred to the IMX377 (phones aside).
I will try to be as unbiased as I can be when responding. I've owned tons of phones (S3, Note 3, G3, S5, Moto X 2nd gen, Nexus 6, Zenphone 2, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P etc...), so I've seen all kinds of cameras. The S6/S6E/Note 5 did win when taking videos (6P sucks at die to only having EIS), and they day pxitures are great/on par with the 6P if not better on occasion. It was for a Nexus to take good pictures in general before this generation.
Thank you for the test.
It is however the AF, noise, dynamic range and colour accuracy under not-so-ideal lighting conditions that really shows if there is a big difference between the two.
ISO 1600, very low light, no flash, 1/10-1/30s shutter time.
If anybody can post such comparisons, make my day
Here's an ISO 1250 no-flash shot from GSM Arena test for S7:

What isn't? The S7 clearly has a fantastic camera, your post makes zero sense.
I feel the exposure is too much for S7 camera? Do we need to turn down the exposure since it has a f1.7???

sorry but it's not what i see in this photos.
I see no gap of qualitiy (against a 6p Oo) and even yellow filter, too much deformation. There is clearly a problem... perhaps jpeg threatment?

I'm clearly reading the photos different than you in that case. But instead of making a rash judgement on photos taken in a bright shop floor on an S7 with an unknown and no doubt pre-release firmware on it, check the photos out in that link, particularly those in low light. It's clearly a fantastic camera.

If you look at the EXIF data for the pictures they both had similar ISO values for the images. This test was by no means scientific, but I think it gives people a good general idea of what to expect. I'm not sure if the software on it is the final build, but it did have the February security patch. The S7E did seem a little noisier around and overexposed in some areas unfortunately. As I mentioned before both were on auto mode and I didn't tap to focus on either phone. I'll wait until I get my phone to do a real full comparison and post it here. I enjoy taking pictures, and would like to see how the S7E performs with the lens kit too. It was nice how the S7E took a HDR+ picture without the ~>1 second it takes the 6P when I was messing with it. There is a manual "pro" mode in the app which could assist with taking better pictures, but it should still capture good images using auto.
The white balance is different, and it can be altered afterwards to suit taste. The S7 pictures look cooler, Nikon-like, while the 6P pictures look warmer, Canon-like. Looking at the pixel level, the Samsung seems to have less noise. And also looking at the ceilings, the Samsung shows the ceiling close to its real color while the 6P shows it in a brownish color. I also wonder what color did the watch holder LED from the picture really has. Is it blue (like the Samsung shows) or white (like the 6P shows) ?

Yeah we ll see when a true test comparison goes out. BUT for now, it's not good at all (IN THIS PICS)
And the gsmarena article=> really im not impressed at all. I have the same effect with my s6 and post threatments...

And in my view claiming the S7 photos in this thread are "not good at all" is ridiculous. You can argue the 6P photos are better, but that doesn't equate to the same thing.

S7 and S7 edge vs S6 (First proper camera review by hardwarezone)

http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/feature-samsung-galaxy-s7-vs-galaxy-s6-who-takes-better-photos
After days of waiting, we finally have another detailed camera review. While the article does not go into pixel peeping depth, it gives a good idea of how the camera perform against its predecessor. It seems like the s7 handles contrasts and low light( of course) much better.
Hopefully will bring peace to people worried about S7 camera underperforming...
Interesting and thanks for the link. Seems to be very competent camera.
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Thanks for the link. I think I'm convinced the S7 is better in low light. The concern is whether it's taken a sacrifice in brighter conditions - would be good to see some daylight photos from people getting their phones this week
This really should quieten down the people claiming the S6 has a better camera, and that Samsung have taken a step backwards. The outdoor contrast and street at night pictures in particular were hilariously one-sided.
In my opinion S6 has the advantage , In day time, S6 photos is obvious better than s7 with more vivid colors. During sunset and night , the photos is almost identical with only iexception the night street scene ,which s7 was better.
I would like to see a real life comporison too , because most of us , we usually take photos of our friends and not static buildings in the night.

One of us may need to calibrate our displays, because the S7 has a clear advantage to me. I notice a lot of the reds on the S6 seem to wash out and look pink (like the pic looking up the steps with the red box on the side).
I dunno, I think I'd rather go with the S6 and it's 4 megapixel advantage.
You need to read up on why that isn't necessarily an advantage when it comes to quality of image.

Don't worry, I did that many moons ago.
For what mobile phone cameras are used for, the difference between 16mpx and 12 mpx is nothing. That extra 4pmx has no practical advantage bar the aspect ratio. I'd sooner have an increase in quality and a reduction in size.

Obviously you didn't bother reading the author's notes. In almost all cases they noted that the S7 was producing more accurate colors, and the S6 was producing tones that were not true to what the scene actually looked like.
If your idea of a superior camera is one which produces overly saturated images at the expense of color accuracy (similar to the issue samsung's older AMOLED displays had), then stick with the S6.
For the rest of us, accuracy is the sign of a better camera. Saturation can easily be adjusted to taste in post (especially with the S7's raw support). It's much harder to fix incorrect colors after the fact going off of memory. The S6 also struggled in high-constrast scenes. There were several instances where certain parts of the image were blown out because the S6 couldn't keep up with the wide range of the scene.

So when you look at photos 6 and 9 for example you don't see a quality difference. OK.
There seems to be a slight difference between the two. With the S7 just barely edging out the S6... The camera should not be the big reason to get the S7 (even though i am getting the S7)...
I saw this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD_2udbnsLg and it looks like slow motion video is also better... I noticed on my S6 when i do slow motion, the scene become much darker, the S7 doesnt seem to have that issue...

This +1. My S7E should be here tomorrow also.
My personal opinion and this applies only to me so your mileage may vary - The S6 camera is beyond fantastic, I regularly have amateur photographer friends who ask me what camera I use because my images are excellent (I have an S6E). So, If even if the S7 camera was the *same* as the S6, the S7 is a winner, considering ALL the other improvements they made to the phone. I was worried they would take a step backwards with the slim camera module, and I wasn't really expecting any major camera improvements. But it does seem the S7 camera is slightly better than the S6, which in my mind is a bonus.
And keep in mind all this is before software updates. If you remember the early S6 days, there were 2 if not 3 software updates within the first few months that all had slight camera improvements. I remember there was an update even when I first powered on the phone from tmobile.

That's generally those that have the S6 either in contract and cannot yet upgrade and therefore find their own ways to bash it. Happens all the time with new flagships.
Some even pretend they are getting the S7 to try and validate their claim. Very sad in my opinion.

agree the "slightly better" come too much in this review... especially with this kind of px drop (16 => 12)
To be honest if the S7 camera is just as good as the S6 I'm golden. I actually don't take too many pictures right now.
Every single one of them looks a little better to me in varying degrees.

Very important news about this phone!

Please don’t delete this topic it’s fair warning!
I hate to be right sometimes but as I told long ago after years of testing it turns out that the best camera of Samsung was in S6 / S6Edge+. Test it yourself. Hold S6 in one hand and for example S8 in the other and take a photo in good light. Then zoom it on the phone and you will see that S6 has better details, no artificial brightener while for example S8 has it.
S6 has 16 Mpix and all flagships that came after had 12 Mpix rear camera.
I’ve tested S6 Edge Plus vs. S7 / S8 / S8+, Note8, S9, S9+ and…
only S9+ finally beat S6. (look how Samsung did bad for us from Sep2015 till March2018)
I wish I had NOT sale my S6 and bought a newer one
If You don't believe me? Ask XDA members who has S6 and a later Galaxy S model (but not S9+)
This is a Warning for You don't sell your S6!!!! or sell only if you can afford to buy S9+.
I did the wrong thing so I Warn you no to make the same mistake that I did
The zoom function is not a good example for comparison between cameras. Neither is the amount of megapixel, of which apparently they decided to keep it at 12mp. for the time being.
So if you want more mp, and better photos, then get a professional camera.
As for reviews from reputable sites, those claim the s8 and up are better than their predecessors.

But in all fairness, topic title is misleading.
Should be something like regret of selling s6 for s8. Or camera s6 better than s8.

The problem is I am not a camera phone fanatic.
And coming from a op5 who has supposedly has an even worse camera and I do not see the difference.
Having that said you are ranting other people to not buy a phone because you have issues with one part of the s8(+) that is why I think topics like this should not exist.
A phone does have other things than a camera you do know that. Wanting wordclass foto's and then trying to shoot them with a smartphone
i have both and and its not true i stil have both phone and my s8 plus has way better camera than my s6 specially in low light low light pictures have lots of nois in s6 and even day light pictures s8 takes better picture when how many times you going to zoom a picture more mega pixel doesn't mean a good camera .

So how do You explain my 1000 pics expermenting S6E+ vs. the new Galaxy S devices? I did it from the emerge od S7 till the launch of S9/S9+
The purpose of this post was to warn all of ppl that DO want to use only smartfion to take pics.
I have no agenda against S8. I just know that a lot of ppl are massivly abandoning S6 cause they think that cam will be significntly better on a newer Galaxy. Out of my good heart I want to spare them the dissapointment.
Like I said if a person wants to change S6 only for pics quality reason they should buy nothing less than S9+ otherwise they will be sadly dissapointed.
You are a very bad android boy for posting this :3

I can agree with this statement. As a current ow er of an s6 edge+ I can say photo quality is lacking compared to my sister's s7 and my friend's s8. That 4 Megapixel count really doesn't make a difference when it comes to smartphone photography.
Cool thanks for that, I'll sleep better tonight

During years with my 1000 photos taken by S6EPlus from launch od S7 till launch of S9/S9+ I did it for myself cause Samsung kept on saying that that the photo quality is better in good light than previous S models. So I went to the electronics shop. I one hand I had my phone and in the other the newer Galscy version. I joined hands, pointed forward in the same linear direction and I have taken a photo with both (same options on both, for example HDR). Then I opened in both phones the gallery and I looked very intesnly with no zoom and with zoom whsat the quality was.. the S6EPlus won with all but not with S9+. But I did not have the photos from these other models troughout the years cause I was doing it for my self to check my theory that Samsung will be lying about much camera improvment.
Hence no photos. I wasnt planing then to warn everybody. I myself wanted to buy S7E and all the next phones cause I beleived that maybe the next and next model with have a batter cam. I waited 3 years, 3 generations till the emerge of S9+ that I can truely say that in good light S9+ makes better photos than my S6E+. I was planning to buy it but I didnt have enough money
This is stupid and your S6 is a crappy, obsolete phone. I'm sorry.
