Encryption on the Xperia Z5 - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I finally received my brand new Xperia Z5 yesterday (lovely phone !) and I have some questions concerning encryption
What will be the performance hit once encryption is enabled? Will it be noticeable and will the Z5 feels slower?
I know it's not compatible with Smart Lock but will it also make it impossible to unlock the phone using the fingerprint scanner knowing this feature uses a proprietary API in Lollipop? (Good thing Marshmallow natively supports it)
Will it still be possible to use and update my phone with Flashtool?
Thank you

I just wiped to factory settings last night on my Z5. Installed my apps but I didn't sign in nor restore Them from Xperia backup nor google backup. Setup my first my fingerprint security (with the password first) and it took me 10mins to encrypt the phone. Reboot register my services inside my apps like OneNote etc and I'm golden. No performance lag at all.

Hi,
Z5 Compact here. No performance impact noticed, but battery (IMHO) lasts 10-20% less. Don't know why, because I suppose encryption in Snapdragon 810 is hardware-accelerated.

[Q] Encrypted performance

Hello there,
For all those of you that have encrypted their Xoom. Have you noticed any decrease in performance? I'd like to also encrypt mine, but not at the expense of performance.
Best,
A few seconds longer boot time but no performance lost in linpack or quadrant. Is you have auto time setup it will change on you after every reboot though. Very odd bug but for me nothing major.
James
I've been thinking of encrypting mine as well but the concern I have is whether this could lead to incompatibilities or issues that are not known to date. Also while it may not be measurable, there will be a performance hit due to the nature of encryption.
Quick question, if you encrypt do you only have to decrypt via passcode at power on or after sleep? Reason is I hardly ever power mine off so if someone found it or figured out how to unlock it, at that point it'd be decrypted. Not seeing the advantage of this as opposed to a regular passcode/security at the lock screen.
The difference is that while your Xoom is encrypted & locked, you can't access data from a PC. This means that if you lose it no-one can access your data. A major plus if you ask me.

But I though the decryption only happens once at startup (after poweron) so while it's on it's decrypted right? Also I don't think USB works when the device is locked even if it's not encrypted.
I think we should have an official statement from Google about how this encryption works. For personal use it is not a big deal, but if someone is going to use his/her xoom at work, it is very important, specially when one has to deal with the computer and technical department.

I'm not sure exactly. I should be getting my Xoom in the next couple of days so I'll test it before I customise it too much so I can factory reset easily enough.

[Q] Remote enabling GPS - Stolen device

Hello guys,
The unthinkable has happened, I forgot my phone in a public place...
*Running 5.1.1
*It's rooted
*Its not encrypted so theoretically someone could wipe the device bypassing the lock screen
*I know that no one has wiped it yet because I can remotely install apps via playstore and verify that they have been installed, meaning LTE is still enabled, and it has battery life.
*I have Android Device Manager installed
Here is the kicker, I habitually leave GPS disabled to lengthen battery life. I've remotely installed Cerberus to the phone but I'm not sure if there is any use trying with cerbus if I haven't launched or signed into cerberus on the device itself. I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on how I can remotely activate my GPS? I'm running out of time before the battery dies or someone wipes the device. I have to either locate it or remotely clear the internal memory.
Thanks for any help guys.
I have just tried my Cyanogen account online and as soon as i hit locate it turns my GPS to high accuracy. Not sure if this is only on COS12 or if it works on any CM rom (if you are using CM)

Z3 D6603 Android 5.1.1

Hi All,
New to forum, have followed some guides before with my old Samsung S3.
Now have a Sony Xperia Z3 which I am delighted with...apart from an issue I encountered just today.
Basically I went to read a text, message app crashed, repeated to go view message app a few times but same result.
Decided to restart phone, booted up and checked again - all texts now gone...vanished!
Anyway I want to recover them as some messages are important to me and upcoming events.
I've read I have to root my device to attempt recovery of these texts.
I also read, months ago to be fair, rooting the Z3 also unlocked the bootloader which as a result screwed with the DRM keys and quality of the camera (which was amazing in my recent Rome trip!).
Basically I want to root my device, not break my camera quality, not loose my DRM keys and attempt recovery of missing texts (with third party windows apps most likely).
Can this be done?
Found this guide but it doesn't mention the DRM keys so I am unsure:

Any help is appreciated

xperia transfer mobile - not working

I have bought the Zz and tryed to get sms from my old Xperia SP: And just cannot make it work. It makes no difference wheather I use PIN in NFC, the result is the same.
So where do I go wrong:
XPERIA SP:
I downloaded an installed the app from Google play. The firmware on SP in the stock 4.3 Android. The only option that this phone gives me in of sending data wirelessly to another device. So just what I need. I click to the screen where it want to know whether I want to use PIN of NFC.
XPERIA Z5
I launch the "app" from the settings and click that the other device in an Xperia (or android, it makes no difference, the result is the same). I click that I want to receive data wirelessly from the other device i get to the screen where I have to choose PIN of NFC.
Let's say I go with PIN. Xperia Z5 offers me a PIN code and I enter it in Xperia SP. When connection is made, Xperia Z5 asks me to "accept" the other device (don't know what the proper word is, I do not use English on any of my devices). I accept of course. The xperia SP informs me that that is all I have to do on this device and that I should choose what I want to sync from he list on the other device. And that is the problem. Xperia Z5 never loads the list. I cannot select anything, it is just loading with the red circle going around endlesly. I left it for over 20 minutes ones, just to make sure I am not to impatient but to no avail. It's the same with NFC.
What am I doing wrong?
I had the same problem when I transferred data from my Z2.
The thing is, 20 minutes is not enough time. The process is very slow. I don't know how long it took for me. I just started the process before I went to bed and when I woke up, I had a list of applications I could transfer.
So just give it time.
Good luck
O dear, I didn't think, it would take that much time. I will give it another try.
I haven't tried those but i use the cloud which is extremely stable. Try uploading it to the cloud from your old phone and then download it from your new phone
I noticed in these screenshots that the cell signal is generally poor (yellow and red). It drains A LOT of battery when the phone has to compensate for the poor signal. Might be due to the phone/antenna though.

Android 9 : Apps crash when screenlock verification ...

Hello folks,
Happy Sony user since stone age , I have a strange issue with my xperia XA2
Smartphone (powered by oficial Sony Android 9 ROM) :
When an app is requesting for screen lock verification (eg for Ms Authenticator, Volvo app, ...), the app restarts
or loops at security prompt, whatever I provide correct PIN or Biometric.
I already gave a try to unset screen lock and reconfigure biometric without success.
Turning off screen lock, prob is gone but phone is unsecured, being not possible.
For the rest, the phone works perfectly, great battey, no issue.
That makes me crazy, not being able to fix that small issue.
any idea what can be broken ? Any tips ?
Thanks
Cheers from Belgium

Do you really need a screen lock?
It's more likely to lock you out rather than a stranger.
Sometimes through no fault of your own as with a hardware issue or data corruption.
If no lock is set, no problem. I lost access to a laptop bios like that. Even after 5 years I remember the simple password I set... useless.
The only real security is physically possession. Anyone that wants my phone will pay a steep price... it stays with me, always.
Yes, need phone to be locked... And with eID, banking and MFA apps, having your unlocked phone lost/stolen/... is very dangerous !
Thanks anyway !

Bank accounts are insured at least in the US.
Trying to steal my phone is extremely dangerous... no free rides
You need to weigh usability verses risks.
You also should consider what will happen if you lose access to the phone especially at a bad moment. At the very least it will cost you time and loss of use.
