Flash SM-G920F (DBT) with the latest BTU firmware - possible? - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I am getting somewhat unhappy with the lack of official updates for my unlocked SM-G920F (DBT) S6, which I bought from Amazon Germany. Looks like the UK variants have a much more recent BTU firmware dated January 2016, while mine is stuck with October 2015 update.
PhoneInfo shows the following:
Product code: SM-G920FZKADBT
Original CSC: DBT
Firmware's CSC: DBT
Active CSC: DBT
Bootloader: G920FXXU3COI9
PDA: G920FXXU3COI9
CSC: G920FDBT3COI6
Baseband: G920FXXU3COI9
Would it be possible for me to flash the latest official BTU firmware without tripping Knox?
Many thanks for your comments!

Yes.

Many thanks for your response! This is a good news
Do I need to change CSC somehow, or would it be sufficient to just flash the latest BTU firmware with Odin?

Switching is not going to help you as the BTU version is just as old as the DBT version. COI9 is the latest release for both countries.
You will have no benefit by switching to BTU.
It seems that since October, Samsung has only updated the carrier versions of their builds and not the Open/carrier independent versions.
There is one notable exception, which is the NEE version for Denmark/Sweden. This at least has the security updates dated Dec. 1 and is, aside from Marshmallow, the best you can do for the SM-G920F.
What I did was just flash NEE on top of the existing firmware (in my case BTU). That provides a mixed CSC version for the time being but can be healed by flashing BTU again, when Samsung finally comes out with a new firmware.
What I would recommend for you to do is to complain with Samsung. I have emailed them and made it clear that they promised monthly security updates in August 2015. Their promise is what prompted me to purchase the Samsung S6 in September. After the purchase, they delivered exactly one monthly update for it, then 4 months of delivering nothing.
They have not kept their promise and I suggest you (and everyone else who is upset by this) let them know. In my case I have also asked them for a return of the phone.
This is also something I will now attempt to initiate through my dealer.

You are right, the latest BTU is the same G920FXXU3COI9 :|
I already complained to Samsung twice, the last time was yesterday, but they were not forthcoming. I also bought the device hoping for the monthly updates, but didn't get any since October 2015.

And it's only going to get worst for updates as they be very few & far between for the S6 this year once the S7 is launched.

Yeah, this is kinda sad.

Quite honestly the S6 is the best phone I've ever used and I would love to keep it. But the update policy, especially considering the promise Samsung made, is not acceptable. I'll keep you updated on my attempts at returning it.

Thanks! I thought about returning mine, but won't even try: it's easily one of the best phones for the money, the only alternative for me would be an iPhone 6/6s, and I'm not prepared to go that route

hey, of course you can flash btu firmware on german handset. that's what i always do after buying samsung's phone. it's the cleanest one with no bloat.
Sent from my SM-G925F using Tapatalk

I just received a response from Samsung basically telling me to f*ck off and contact a local repair shop. Sent them the following:
Hi,
Many thanks for your response! Unfortunately, my location (Cyprus) is not on the list. Moreover, I own a factory unlocked and carrier-independent EU version sourced from Germany (DBT), which does not depend on the local carriers.
As far as I can see, the latest update for Galaxy S6 (DBT), as well as for the UK unlocked and unbranded version of Galaxy S6 (BTU), is G920FXXU3COI9, dated October and September 2015 respectively - I checked Sammobile, XDA forums and other Internet resources to verify this. My understanding is that no further updates have been released to the aforementioned unlocked and unbranded EU versions, either DBT or BTU, thus my question is: where are the November 2015, December 2015 and January 2016 security updates promised by Samsung and "released" on paper?
I bought the device based on the promise that it would get frequent security updates, only to face another letdown by Samsung. I would appreciate an explanation and an estimate of when the above updates will become available to my device.
Thanks!

You're going to be waiting for months, at least. First they're going to do the other models, which probably won't be until June, at least, and will be ongoing into July and probably August, if not longer. Then they'll slooooooowly start rolling out other regions. The build available now is for the Spain region, so I would be willing to bet the Italian language will be available, if that's your concern. And you don't need root to install these updates.
An example, I have an international model Galaxy S4 Active. The first LP update was released back in January, but they're still rolling out new regions, and even now there's only about 5 or 6 different regions available for a phone that is sold around the world in nearly every region imaginable. Since you especially don't have to worry about any specific carrier, what do you have to lose trying this update out?

Recover OTA updates on stock firmware

I've searched about a lot but I haven't found a straight answer so if anyone can give me a hand it would be highly appreciated.
I have a G930FD which originally had a XSG (United Arab Emirates) firmware. As soon as the first BETA Nougat firmware was available I sideloaded it, and the same happened with the first offical Nougat release, CSC BTU.
A couple of days later, the official Nougat firmware from my original CSC (XSG) was released, but I already had flashed the BTU version so I didn't download it.
My question is, having changed my CSC from XSG to BTU, will I recieve future OTA updates? I understand it won't be the case because the Firmware CSC and the IMEI (or any other form of ID on the phone) do not match on Samsung's records. All my past phones had TTT CSC which had terrible waiting times for updates so I always sideloaded new firmware on them, but now my S7 seems to be receiving OTA a lot sooner.
Will I gain access to OTA by flashing the XSG firmware?
Thanks a lot for your time.
Anyone??

Whatever your CSC is, they are the OTA updates you will receive, so if it is currently BTU, you will receive BTU OTA updates so long as it remains stock / official (Not rooted or other custom)
Thanks for your reply. I actually changed the CSC to BTU when I installed the Nougat Beta firmware, and when the final version was released I didn't receive the OTA Update, so I thought I wasn't going to receive any.

Not sure it has released for the FD yet, just F
Afaik you can flash F firmware on FD though, so you could flash the final Nougat 7 G930F firmware with ODIN and continue to receive OTA updates for the F model
DualSIM still works too from what I understand

That's most likely the reason, I hadn't take into account the fact that my S7 is FD, not F. I'm pretty sure BTU doesn't have a FD model, which is mostly reserved for the asian and eastern market. I might need to search for the firmware released specifically for the FD in order to recieve OTA updates. I'll give it a try with the XSG Nougat available on sammobile even when it is labeled as a F firmware. FD version doesn't get that much attention regarding the flashable firmware files on the sites I usually visit.
I'll wait for the February security patch OTA and see what happens.
Firmware for the F version works 100% on the FD by the way, tested on both Beta and Final Nougat versions.
Thanks for your time mate.

What is the difference between a BTU and an XEU ROM in 2017?

I say in 2017 because it seems like they're not getting the latest firmware updates recently. Contrary to what made them better than other ROM product codes.
I recently switched to a BTU ROM because I've read that it's the unbranded ROM version for SM-G920F. And that it also receives firmware updates earlier than others. But I also couldn't find much information about the difference between BTU and XEU.
All I know is both of them are unbranded, and contains no carrier add-ons, and are generally preferred overall; if you're not planning on using carrier specific services like Voice over LTE.
Anyone care to explain?

Yeah, that's what I found too. But I don't really understand it to be honest. Aren't they basically the same thing? Why would Samsung need to release a separate rom version for unbranded phones that did not come from them directly?

According to Samsung its not released in UK as its carrier dependent even if you purchased it through Samsung directly.
I have told them I'm not happy after being told will get regular updates and these are supposed to be every quarter at most.
Absolutely disgusting that purchasers are being treated like this still.

Samsung S10e not Receiving Updates (SM-G970U)

Hello guys,
I bought my brand-new Samsung S10e this year in early July and I havent received any update since the January 2020 security patch, which I assume was installed when the phone was manufactured. I was wondering if there's any issue with my firmware or anything. I have seen some recommendations for firmware flashing, I am a bit freaked out about it as I have never done it and I dont want to brick the phone. Additionally my phone is the US variant (Snapdragon) and New Zealand where I live has Exynos for the Default, further convincing me that the phone might have no compatible firmware for where I live to receive updates. I also read that it is not possible for Snapdragon to be rooted and so I was wondering if I could get comfirmation as to whether or not I could use custom ROMs. Any help, suggestions, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated, I am desperate for anything.
Phone model number: Galaxy S10e SM-G970U 128GB
Thanks in advance
