Ok so I have a noob question. I have a boost mobile moto g 2013 xt1031 running lolli 5.1 and have unlocked the boot loader. Now want to root and install custom rom. Does phone have to be rooted first or can you do this all at the same time. Can I please get a step by step guide that explanes this process dont want to play guessing game.
1. unlock bootloader
2. install a custom recovery via fastboot
3. install a custom ROM via custom recovery
Only if your custom ROM doesn't include root:
4. install a root package
I seem to be having problems finding a recovery that will work with my xt1031 only one for version xt 1032.
I have an XT1031 and can confirm both of three are compatable. The link below is for the non-themed TWRP version.

Anyone had any success with root on Moto G 4G XT1039? Haven't tried it myself, as I am unsure what to do, especially with no stock rom or custom recovery available as far as I am aware. A little hesitant to try it without advice. About to try the following:
1. Unlock bootloader via Motorola Website
2. Fastboot flash boot recovery (XT1032)
3. Flash SuperSU
Hello,
I'm new here and will follow this with great interest. I'm about to receive mine, supposed to be a XT1039 too.
Keep up.

From what I've read, there is no 100% working recovery for the xt1039 - I *booted* from the xt1045 recovery to install the SuperSU.zip, and it worked absolutely fine on my xt1039. Just run "fastboot boot recovery recovery.img"
have you came across this thread? the custom recovery won't work but you will be rooted...

Hello everyone,
My phone got OTA Lolipop 5..0.2 update some time ago and i was looking for a guide how to flash custom recovery and root the phone but there are so many different topics and different versions and so on .. could someone provide me with correct link?
I want to root my phone so as i understand i need to unlock my bootloader (already did it), then flash custom recovery and superSU.
Is there any working guide for Lolipop stock ROM? What recovery, superSU ver. should i flash and where should i get them? Thanks.
I have tried various methods for rooting my unlocked XT1039. All have failed.
The phone is running Lollipop.
I have checked the basics such as allowing debugging mode and so on.
My question is simple: is there a definitive guide for me to follow. I think the issue might be that I am trying to root the phone by flashing it with an incompatible image.
Many thanks in advance.
Make sure you have the moto usb drivers

Chainfire has only for xt1039 version only for kitkat (4.4.4). None are for lollipop (5.0.1).
Flash custom recovery > flash superuser.zip > ROOT!
One does not use root exploits with a unlocked bootloader.

Hi, I would like to know if it is possible to successfully install xposed on Moto Gs without having a custom recovery installed. I'm asking for this because I don't want to mess too much with my phone and to keep it as clean as possible.
Thank you
Moto G XT1032

5.1 Brazil
Bootloader unlocked
As far as I know there's no possibility to install xposed for Lollipop without custom recovery. But I don't understand why you don't want to flash a recovery when you have already "messed" your device with unlocked bootloader and root! It is just one step forward.

Well the bootloader can be locked again and the root can be removed as well. Maybe custom recovery too?
Alternatively, can the custom recovery be flashed temporary to then flash xposed?
But even if you lock it again motorola already knows it and when you lock it again it will show a different code from the original locked one
You can temporarily boot into a custom recovery and install xposed.
Just type fastboot boot <thenameoftherecovery>
Hi all
In order to use a custom rom , I did the following with my moto g XT1033.
It was running on android 4.4.4 wen i did all these.
1. Unlocked bootloader and flashed twrp 2.8.7.0.
2. Downloaded the latest PA build from here "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2614690"
3. And downloaded pico gapps.
4. When i flashed the rom it told that the bootloader is out of date. So i updated the bootloader following this thread "http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/general/falcon-bootloader-upgrader-tool-t3093793"
5. And when i flashed the rom it was flashed fine. And the gapps and supersu also.
But when i reboot it stucks in bootscreen. I tried wiping and flashing once again. It doesnt work. The bootloader and the recovery are remaining safe and good.
Shud i try a new different ROM or is there any problem with my procedure.. ???
The current bootloader version is 41.18. Moto g phones using 5.1.1 had bootloader version as 41.1A. Does this make a difference..?
Try another rom like aicp or euphoria
Hey my moto g3 cm 12.1 camera pictures taken with flash are black panorama pictures appear orange and slow mo is not working

No 41.18 is still fine (it also can be used for marshmallow ROMs e. g. CM 13 or CyanPop)!

Did you root your device after you unlock your bootloader? Maybe you can try to flash supersu first then try to reflash rom and gapps.
