Long time iPhone user. Is it time for Android? - General Questions and Answers

First off, I dont want to start an iPhone vs Android war here!
But heres the thing. I have always had iPhones and I think its time for a change. Been waiting for a jailbreak for iOS 9.2 and I cant see it happening anytime soon. As the iPhone is very limited without a jailbreak, I need more functionality in my life, so I am looking towards an Android solution!
Im tech savvy and have no issues with flashing ROM's etc etc. Used to be into Symbian phones back in the day!
So I am looking for a phone that is better than the iPhone 6 in relation to hardware specs. I am also looking for a pure Android experience, the less bloatware the better! But I suppose the choice of phone will be narrowed by the availability of a nice, and well rounded custom ROM.
I would like something with a decent screen size, I dont want a tablet in my pocket, but the screen needs to be no smaller than the iPhone 6.
Not so worried about the cost and build quality is important.
I also note that there are some impending releases coming, so might wait a month or two to see what new phones will be gracing us!
So what do you recommend?
Thanks

Oh boy, I wouldn't worry about an iPhone Android war but you're going to start another kind of war (the oem one) if you want a new Android phone check here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1846277
But given the sheer amount of replies I don't think you'll be able to get any help from it. So imo the best phone that has all what you want is the huawei Nexus 6P ( great design and build quality and top notch hardware but most important pure android and fast updates) but im may be a bit too big maybe? (5.7")
Other suggestions maybe motorola since they make great phones with aosp android http://www.google.dz/url?q=http://m...ggLMAA&usg=AFQjCNE0_PMlhvpD9ipMsLFmuauokfuM4A

G2 or iPhone 4?

Just curious what your opinions are on these two phones.
I have the iPhone 4, and I have till October 9th to return it after my 30 days is up. With the new G2 coming out, I preordered it and I'm stuck with a hard decision of what phone to keep.
Apple iPhone 4 or the T-Mobile G2?
Any device over an iphone!!!!!!!!!!!

Really? Although I'm not an Apple fanboy, I do enjoy the iPhone 4. I just am having trouble choosing which one to stick with. The G2 will be outmatched in a couple of months which is one reason why I'm having second thoughts.
If you like playing games stick with iphone...if not get a G2...
I'm going from an iPhone 4 to a G2. Not many great reasons though, mostly for the HSPA+ network speeds. I love tinkering with phones though, and I've hit the wall with jailbreaking for the most part. Looking forward to seeing what xda does with the G2
Why not wait for the desire HD? great specs although im not to enthusiastic about the desire design.
I dont like apple due to its lack of physical features (memory card, full bluetooth connectivity etc) so I wouldnt recommend it personally.
As an iPhone 4 owner (hell, I currently own 2 iPhone 4s), it's probably the single best smartphone I've ever owned.
As always, iOS is silky smooth fast and beautiful, the new hardware design is fantastic, and my biggest compliment to it is the battery life. Bar none, the iPhone 4 has lasted longer than any other smartphones I've owned in the past, save for one (the Nokia E71, which I would hesitate to call a smartphone).
I owned a Samsung Captivate previously and looking at the specs sheet of both, it seems like the Samsung Captivate beats out the G2 to me, so I'm going to go ahead and recommend keeping the iPhone 4.
ease of use iphone for me, simple easy to jailbreak and mess with the 4 looks very nice but if you like a tinker id move on for a year then go back when the new 5 is out, new things are cool
3gs and iphone 4 aren't a world apart except for decent screen and rear facing camera which phones have had for ages anyway
go tinker
Get the G2 it looks sweet . Especially if you want a hardware keyboard.
I got an iPod touch if I want any iOS heh. And if I want 3g I use mobile AP on the go and tether my phone to it haha. Haven't done that yet.
Basically ask yourself. Do you want a limited idiot proof device? Or do you want something that you have control over and can do whatever you want?

Hi not trying to troll here, but I have a question. why dosent it bother you that the iphone takes common technology like bluetooth, restricts it and then advertises it like it is a fully functioning device?

I switched from iPhone to android (captivate). It wasn't pretty but I'm glad to have done it.
But freedom comes with a price. I had to tweak my phone to even get it to work as intended (thanks XDA!). Battery Life is nowhere near my 2 year old iPhone 3g was.
So just need to ask yourself do you really want to tweak on a phone - or just use it. iPhone is a great working smart phone out of the box - while most Android phones will require you to do some customizations to get it the way you want it.

[Q] Torn deciding on two phones

I have been able to upgrade through at&t but I do not know what phone to get either the galaxy s ii or the iphone 4s. I know there is not a jailbreak out yet for the iphone but it will be soon. I have yet to mess with the gs2 but have done a lot of research on both. My brother has the 4s, nice phone great performance. I am a cnc programmer ( machinist) so cad software is nice on a device in my pocket. All the research I have done and videos always leads to some type of fan-boy ranting. I like the larger screen the gs2 has but I also like the i message feature considering I do not have unlimited text but do have unlimited data. I like gaming and such also. If someone here can give me some advise on the ups and downs of both phones please?
Do you have any experience with iOS or Android? I upgraded from an iPhone 4 to an S2, and for me the S2 is a much better phone, and Android is a much better (and to me more intuitive) OS. But I love to customize, love the flexibility, and need various features that iOS doesn't have. I don't know what your needs are, but I'm not going back to an iPhone.
I’m in the exact same boat as you and I was torn between these two phones as well. Technically, I’m torn between the Epic 4G Touch and the i4S on Sprint, but the hardware is very similar. Ultimately, I’ve decided to go with the GS2.
Between the two, the performance right now is basically identical, though benchmarks put the GS2 ahead. Webpage, app, and other load speeds are nearly identical, though I’ve played with an i4S and I will say it is sometimes freakishly fast. Both have voice search/assistant-type features (Apple’s Siri is probably ahead). And camera quality is the same. This PC World comparison shows GS2 slightly ahead of i4S and even beating a standard point-and-shoot in some applications.
The decision for me came down to customization and “future-proofiness” of the phones. Apple has great support for their phones and releases updates like clockwork. Samsung is terrible at releasing official updates (we JUST got official Gingerbread on the OG Epic 4Gs). However, here at XDA there are tons of DIY Devs that release tweaks, updates, mods, and ROMs for Android that help keep you ahead of the curve. In addition, the hardware on the i4s (3.5” display [small], 512mb RAM [low]) may leave you wanting in a year, while the GS2 should keep you through to your next upgrade (faster processor, larger screen, 1gb RAM, expandable memory, etc). Beyond that, ICS just got released and has been confirmed for the GS2 sometime next year. Apple is starting to show discrepancies between their phones with only the i4S getting Siri. What will they cut you out of when the next iteration of the iPhone comes out?
As for your concerns on CAD software and gaming, I think that’s going to be a wash too. Both have AutoCAD WS for example, as well as other CAD programs (quick Googling turns up a lot), so it may just come down to which specific program has everything you want.
Gaming is a point of contention and it may come down to preference. iOS has more developer support than Android (personally, I too prefer Objective C [iOS] over Java[Android]), so there seems to be more and potentially better games on the iPhone, especially casual ones, but there are more free games on Android. Most games are ported to both platforms nowadays so it may not matter soon. Back to my future-proofiness point, with more RAM and a higher clock speed, the GS2 should be able to handle more graphically complex games than the i4S so newer games may work better on the GS2 in the future.
Sorry for the long post, but I went back and forth over this forever so I know what you’re going through. The real decision comes down to which has more of what you like. If you like DIY customization, potential future-proofiness, and the CAD software on Android, go GS2. If you like the constant support and huge app library of iOS, then get an i4S. Most other things will be too close to make a difference.
Also, there’s the exact same question asked here.
Thank you for your input. This is a hard choice. my brother seems to think that I would be much better off with the 4s but I believe he is more on apples side because he has had every iphone made. He did say that the apps are just a better quality for the iphone. I can not comment on that yet because I have yet to use both devices for any amount of time. I do plan on gaming, and the 4s has a .200 smaller screen than my current phone does but it has i message which will be handy on saving texts. I know that the gs2 is fast and really fast with some of these custom roms I guess it comes down to apps and screen size.
Android all the way!!! Sure the iPhone is sexy, sleek, slender, and all sorts of other terms involving alliteration, but the main deciding factor for me would be customization...... Are you an avid flasher of custom ROM's? If so this is a no-brainer. My vote is ANDROID, but those 4S's sure are easy on the eyes and they do feel sturdy.....That is all relative when compared to the awesomeness that is the open source market. XDA Developers all the way! I love the freedom of Android and the massive array of great dev's out there who make our phones that much better and provide us with all the goodies that we desire.
I have never owned a apple device nor a android device. I have a windows mobile device in which i have flashed about 200 roms onto it. I do like tweaking and making it faster with better battery life. I have been sorta stuck in the past with no good games and apps for windows mobile. I have had so many points where my brother shows me a new game and they done make it for windows mobile. I like games like that new modern combat and such. I guess I will have to mess with both units more before making a sure choice.

same from my side..
Think the screen will be a "big" factor... I debated too; the screen was one of the things that won me over. Plus, using CADanything on the little 4S will get old quick.
Galaxy s 2 for gods sake!!
I have made a decision on what to get. I am going to go with the Samsung galaxy s2. The screen size is winning me over. I do not think I will root it right away. Or should I? Just get the thing running at top notch. My bro is already saying we will have to do a comparison after apple starts making games and apps that their 4s will utilize. We will see . I have never rooted a android device before but many wm roms have been flashed. I will have to read up on it.
I want to thank everyone for their thoughts on this. I have to start reading up on rooting. Thanks again guys.
I have a Galaxy s2. that thing is a beauty. you won't regret it
Just moved from iphone my self the screen sucked me right in,and def you should root or use CF root if you want to stay on stock rom their is a great how to right here on this site.

Welcome to the iExperiment

Just a short introduction.
I've had android for the past 2 years and i loved it, during this time i had a Droid 2 global(which was stolen), droid incredible(temporary), droid r2d2(bought from ebay), and the galaxy nexus(bought 3rd party as well and was running a 4.2 rom). I was finally able to officially upgrade then i played the waiting game to see what i would get. Surely the new nexus without a doubt but lets see what else there is out there. I did have the nokia lumia 920 in mind but windows always seem to be lacking(to me at least). So i decided to finally get an iPhone 5.
Now before this turns into a flame war i want to say this, the point of this is to provide my point of view on how i compare android to ios. I'm not trying to say which one is superior and the other to off and die.
Why the iPhone? I chose it because i really like the looks and feel of the device. I also didn't go with an android device because i didn't feel like the android's that Verizon has at this point were better than my nexus, and At&t seems to be the exclusive partner for the Lumia 920 and i don't feel like switching over just yet.
Now that this is out of the way I can begin.
Initial Impressions
I wanted to have at least a week with the new phone under my belt before i can start picking at it.
The first and major advantage of the iPhone over my previous phones is the amazing battery life(especially compared to my galaxy nexus with the extended battery) Being able to use my phone for a whole day and not be too worried about the battery life is a major plus.
Another thing i like about the new phone is how smooth and fluid it feels, i've only had a couple instanced of lag. I used my nexus right beside it to make sure its not just the "new phone symptoms" and sure enough its not.
For me this is a big one. For the first time i don't want to root/jailbreak my phone. Even i surprised myself with this, after always rooting my phone and flashing new roms 2 maybe 10 times a month i'm actually content with the phone. I thought the ios layout was going to seriously bug me, but after getting used to it i actually kinda like it.
Stay tuned for the next update!

Thinking of Switching to Oneplus 7 Pro from ios, need guidance.

Hi folks, so using android for pretty much my entire smartphone life, i switched to iPhone two years ago. And it's been wonderful experience. Because when i left the android for ios, i tought ios was ahead and it was when it comes to stability and fluididty. but android has came long road and now, it looks more pleasing to the eye and has tons of features over the ios. and when i first saw the OP7Pro, i was sold. so i am planning to retire my iPhone 7 Plus and switch to 7 Pro. I know in most aspects it will be big update but i still have doubts and i want to clarify them before making the call. iOS has a lot of annoying stuff and i know it doesnt get much love here in xda but its stability, performance, updates and holding its value in the market are very tough to abandon. so if any of you guys switch from iphone, can you enlighten me up? I know that the 90hz display of 7 pro helps massively with the fluidity and it is one of the biggest reason for my desicion but i never see it in action, let alone comparing with the iphone side by side. I know performance will be beastly but what about fluidity? Is it flows like ios on the hand. I am more like animation guy rather than pure speed guy. I wanna enjoy using my phone everytime i hold it so it is very important aspect for me. I know when it comes to holding the value or getting updates iphone is and probably will always be better but i am not keen to switch phones so often and i want to use this at least 3 years. do you think it will be edaquite for that kind of usage? I know speedwise it will but do you think OP will be loyal to this device and give 3 years of android updates? I would love to see some feedback from core OP users too. Thanks in advance, have a wonderful day!
Absolutely OnePlus loyal and Pro active! ? Andoid Q beta is in the works now... Cheers

It's smooth like butter. OnePlus usually updates 1 month behind google but they update it once a month with the open betas (pretty stable for daily driver) been using OnePlus since 2k17 with the 3t,the 6 and now the 7 pro. They'll update it for 3 years. Even after that, custom ROMs will be going strong for the next decade lol

This guy is one of the biggest Apple Sheep there is, if you Google Apple sheep he's actually one of the top results. Here's his unboxing video and initial reactions to the OnePlus 7 Pro.
I owned the iPhone Xs Max for awhile. I will say the animations on iPhones are very nice but the animations on the OnePlus 7 Pro are also good. As far as updates I see no reason why OnePlus will not support the phone for at least 3 years. Resale value, you won't get anything as good as an iOS device but OnePlus does hold their resale value pretty well.

Lol, I'm Android through and through, I just have two lines so I'm able to jump on T-Mobile every 6 months and wanted to see how the other half lived.
The iPhone Xs Max is a nice phone but not for me.
First of all thank all of you for your quick reply and guidance. I really wanted to switch to this phone but had doubts and now they all have been cleared. I pretty much watched all of the comparisons and the videos about the 7 pro including that Apple Sheep fella and he was more than convinced. I liked ios and it suited well for me for a good chunk of time. But i think apple is outdated themselves in both software and hardware there is just no excitement anymore or no new things. I loved the iPhone 7 plus but it is quite outdated in visual and internal departments since the mobile technology has came so far in just 3 short years. Now it is time to upgrade but i cannot justify the price of iPhone XS max while there are such wonderful devices like 7 pro. Even if they were at the same price, 7 pro is just better. And i really really not like the notch. Even if it means secure faceid. Once i was so happy with rooting flashing roms etc but then i became chill and i just wanted easy to use experience with fluid and good looking os. That is the idea behind the switch for the ios but i think now android has come to a stage where i can finally use an android phone right out of the box, as is. So then, wait for me oneplus!

should i buy an s9+ ? modding situation?

hello everyone, recently i had some connector-related problems with my s7edge so i'm about to buy my next phone.
i think that, in this "hardware overkill era" (personally i think that from circa 2018 the effective changes in speed became very small and unnoticeable in terms of usage; apps open just a tiny little faster ), choosing a good used it's better than ever. since i don't have much to spend (gotta apply for masters ya know) i was thinking about getting a s9plus or a OP6t. that is because i like a lot the design of both the phones and the different functions (from water resistance, qi charge, better photos and nice notch/slide-less design by s9p to the in-display fingerprint sensor and veeeery nice software of the op6t ). I really wish there was something around 250/300€ with the functions of both but couldn't find it, and since i can actually buy a still premium phone like those for just 250, probably i'll just stick with one of them. which one?
i’d really like to get a stock aosp/pixel experience with the samsung but can't find a good rom, should i choose the op6t? what is the actual modding situation from the inside?
Honestly, just as I'm looking around for info about root for Android 10 on the S9+, Its depressing me quite a bit. Seeing that this phone isn't that old, and yet, there's so little activity for it and its non + variant. It's really surprising when In the past I had far less popular and expensive phones, and there were A LOT more people working on custom ROMs and a bunch of other stuff, when they were far older than this phone currently is. Don't get me wrong, there is people working on it, but not many.
I'd definitely look for a different phone at this point if you want a new one.

I remember the days, i have the s10+ unlocked version (U1) and i upgraded to android 10 and honestly not that hyped about it either. I still have my Note 3 and Note 4 and play with them because i miss the rooting and my freedom to do whatever i wanted with MY phone.
This trend where we can root and unlock will come to an end just like Apple killed jailbraking Samsung is slowly following Apple like a little sheep started with phone jack to locking bootloaders for them rooting is cancer that needs to be eradicated asap.
I bought the s9+ from amazon last week the G9650 and plan on rooting it later because i miss it that much but i'm staying on Pie (9) for a while longer
I wondered about this too and the most plausible explanation is that many of the great Devs aren't from 1st world nations and the phones can be pricey for them to get hold of to produce ROMs etc.
This is especially holds true since high end mobile phones are $1000+ now and their monthly pay might be a couple of hundred.
Honestly I think modding is no longer that fun like before with many security updates to android that complicates
and dicourages hobbyist developer..nowadays it will cost a lot of effort and money for developers just to come up with something..
Wanna play with admin rights and do whatever you want with a smartphone like the good old days ?
Buy a OnePlus device and enjoy.
Stay away from Samsung.
If you care about modding go with oneplus or a pixel device. Stay far away from Snapdragon Samsung devices.
